July 2013Here we are , half way through the year and our club is going gang-busters ! Or are we ?

Our monthly members meetings are proving enormously popular with extremely good attendance figures. The quality of trip reports has become incredibly high, not only due to the upgrade in equipment, but perhaps also due to a slight change to the scheduling. With the end of month day trip running on the last Sunday of the month, and our meeting taking place on the first Wednesday of the month, there is sometimes only a few days for people to collate pictures and prepare a report presentation. By arranging to have a longer preparation period for these

circumstances, we are able to produce much higher quality presentations for the enjoyment of all members.

Not many of us are gifted orators or talented raconteurs of the quality of John King or Paul Ryan, and the availability of heaps of trip photos to flip through as we narrate our stories is a real blessing. Well done to the I.T. Team for the new equipment and the improvements to the website, the benefits to presenters is very apparent and appreciated. All trip participants are encouraged to contribute to the dropbox facility, it certainly makes the job of presenting a report much easier with varied and combined collections of trip photos. For anyone not too confident in uploading their pictures, please take the opportunity to ask questions at a members meeting.

So far this year our trips have been well organised, well led, and well patronised. However there is a downside to our performance. We have had only one trip where new trip leaders have been “blooded”. By that I do not mean we have beaten them with rubber hoses, just that new trip leaders have planned and carried out a successful trip. The

Warriedar Station trip on the June long weekend was lead by our B-team, Bruce and Judith Brinkley. Please note, our A-team was also on the trip – guess who ? Congratulations to Bruce and Judith on a job well done.

I also congratulate Peter Nicol on his willingness to step forward and get involved in the future calendar as a new trip leader. Peter’s preference for the “locked and lifted” stuff will no doubt complement Paul and Craig’s efforts to get us all down and dirty.

Being successful at recruiting new members, holding informative training sessions, obtaining exclusive access to public speakers such as “Lucky Troy”, producing one of the premiere club magazines, are all good indicators of the quality of our membership. However, we are very short of active trip leaders. We cannot continue to “recycle” our long serving trip leaders like some parties seem to do. It is vital for our continued success that we maintain a varied and interesting trip calendar and we can only do this with more active trip leaders than we currently have.

I have lamented in previous editions about the dearth of new trip leaders, and while Bruce and Judith’s’ efforts are noteworthy, their efforts alone will not carry us through a successful calendar. Over the coming months I will be approaching members with direct requests to become a trip leader. This is not fair warning to prepare reasons why not to become a trip leader, but rather to ask yourself what do I need to do so I can contribute to the club’s outstanding performance.

On a more positive note, the new visitor registration system appears to have

been successful in de-bottlenecking the entrance at members meetings. Well done to I.T.Manager Rob and Membership Officer David. It was also my observation at the start of Guy and Wendy’s Avon Valley trip last month that the new system also streamlined the paperwork for trip leaders. At last, a win (in the club) for technology. I can hear MG smile already.

• Spare wheel rubbish bags should be ready in time for the 4WD Show….awaiting samples

• A 4WD Gathering is planned for mid/late Sept and will be at Dowerin. The local council are going out of their way to encourage us. Will build a gymkhana site and will make camping areas available for the all. An-ticipate this will be available for ALL clubs whenever they wish to visit the area. They want regular visits so people spend money in the town! Track is for fun, not racing. Have passed info onto Michael Gilbert.

• 4WD Show will be a similar format to last year with tents available to all clubs.

o Tear drop banners for all clubs to be made available for all clubs to purchase at about $400 for two.

o Will be calling for volunteer drivers again.

I am getting pretty good at recognising those members in the club who have occupations in areas such as project management or planning. They are the people who always get their advertising for trips or other important information to me in plenty of time for it to be effective.

We are all extremely grateful to anyone who volunteers to run a trip, and if you are one of these very valuable people, here are some things to consider about how you advertise your trip.

The club magazine remains the primary tool for the club to distribute information to members and non-members. And this is where I recommend you place your trip information so that 100% of the club membership gets to see it. It is also now available on-line to the public and the hardcopy provided to visitors at each meeting.

The closing date for submissions for the magazine is the 15th of each month. I usually have the magazine prepared within a day or two following this date before uploading it to our commercial printer. It then takes about one week for it to arrive on my door step in hard copy. Delivering the magazine to you takes another week (thanks to the inefficiency of Australia Post). With that timeframe in mind, do not leave submitting your trip details just one month before the trip. If your trip is at the end of a month, the latest date you should be considering submitting is TWO months earlier.

You do not need to format a fancy flyer for your trip. Email me the details and I will do the rest.

Unnecessary worrying about attendance numbers for your event could be avoided with a bit of fore-thought and planning. There should be no need for last minute emails from the Secretary trying to gain numbers for a trip.

The monthly members meeting will attract 30 to 50% of club members. These meetings also attract many visitors who are keen to go on as many trips as possible. So make sure you are available to speak at a meeting preceding your trip. However, don’t leave the marketing of the trip until the meeting just weeks before. By this time, most people already have their social calendar earmarked for other things.

CAMPSITE:CEC BURROWS CAMPSITE (GROUPS ONLY). The turnoff to the national park is approximately 50 km up the Toodyay Road from Midland. We have this site booked for the clubs exclusive use. There are bush toilets and a shower available which is subject to water availability from tanks. There is a large shelter and several large

cleared flat areas. Fires are permitted but we must bring in our own wood. You also need to bring your own drinking water.

SITE CAMPING FEESNormal DEC camping charges apply and you need to log in at the park entrance.

TRIP GRADE The tracks in are very good and suitable for caravans and camper trailers. We will do some 4x4 trips if you wish to participate and they will vary from 2 to 4 depending on

the weather conditions. Largely this will be a park up camping trip.TRIP NUMBERS

Restricted to 10 vehicles. Suitable for modest sized caravans , camper trailers and tents.

Lorella Springs Wilderness Park (Station)

When: Depart Saturday 21 June 2014 and return Sunday 20 July 2014 (29 days).

Where: Lorella Springs Wilderness Park (Station) is on the Gulf of Carpen-taria. Turn off the Savannah Way near Cape Crawford in NT.

Convoy: Maximum of eight vehicles. Camper trailers and caravans OK to Lorella Springs camping area and caravan park where a base camp will be established - from then on 4x4 only. The track into Lorella Springs is a station track and great care should be taken with caravans.

Tentative route is Perth to Broome and on to Lorella Springs via the Savannah Way. Return to Perth will be via Alice Springs and the Great Central Highway.

Who: Members only.

Equipment: Usual club emergency and recovery gear.

Extra gear: To actually get to the Gulf of Carpentaria from the camp ground/caravan park is strictly for 4 X 4 off road vehicles, as is access to the water falls and other places of interest. As such your vehicle will require vehicle spares, a snorkel, a mini-

mum of all terrain tyres and an extra spare tyre. It is advisable to fit a winch and think about plenty of clearance.

Trip detail & Costs: The trip detail (fuel stops, camp spots and exact route etc) together with an estimated cost of the trip will be advised at a special meeting with those interested in joining the expedition

Lorella Springs Wilderness Park (Station): 1 million acre property (almost twice the size of the ACT) with lots to do and see (and some of the station it yet to be explored). It is advertised as equivalent to the Cape York area 40 years ago. The station is in the middle of nowhere - adventure unlimited!!! Once we leave the camp area/cara-van park we will be on our own to explore to our hearts content.

As this is a Wilderness Park the owners do not permit shooting but you are permitted to fish in the rivers and lagoons for eating only (but not to take home).

Our Guest Speaker was one of our Members Troy Shortland.There are a couple in our club who are ‘full of life’ , physically active and seeming very healthy. None more so than Troy, age 39, who just last year was trekking areas of the outback as part of his Paramedic job. So it was a wakeup call to everyone to hear him tell our members of his heart attack... and the validity of incorporating a simple stress test into everyone’s health check.Troy, a well experienced, knows the signs, paramedic admitted to being a typical redblooded, always in denial, Australian male.. and that any chest pain and discomfort he was feeling could not possibly be what he deeply suspected. Troy admitted it was only the insistence of his workmate that got him to medical attention and consequent immediate cardiac surgery.Troy brought to the meeting firstly his good prognosis for a continuing healthy life and secondly a slideshow presentation of what can happen to any of us. Higher statistics than we would have expected, which could possibly be pre-empted by that stress test. Troy, we would greatly miss your heckling, so are very appreciative of the fact you are still around to let us know when you are around.

Trip ReportsBruce then gave his presentation of his trip in early June to the Trackcare Rangelands restoration site of Warriedar Homestead. Having offered to do any odd jobs while we were there, we were given the task of repairing the donkey.. the method of heating water using a fire under a 44gal drum in use for centuries. Job done and then Trackcare were advised by DEC that any donkeys needing repair were to be scrapped. Just as well it was fixed before

the edict. Ladies, I’m taking an extra donation of water and we may actually have hot water showers when we are there again.!!

Upcoming EventsMaintenance Day proposed for Sat 13th July is in doubt. At this point only a couple have registered interest.. not enough to warrant taking up the time and equipment kindly offered by Medicar at Bibra Lake. So if you are interested phone Piers ASAP. Plumridge Lakes Trip - cancelled

Wildflower / Bakery Tour - September, Jeff Otway & absent John King. Jeff again regaled the delights to be had of 9am starts, max 100km travel per day, fishing, traveling this country in wildflower season, plus being relatively close to Perth eg Goomalling is only about 130km from Perth and about 1 1/2 hours away. This trip offers the ability to join or leave the group at any time if ‘employment’ needs to intrude. And then of course there is the excellent $16 per head 3 course dinner put on by the Goomalling Caravan Park just for us.

Avon Valley Group Campsite Long weekend September.Guy is booking the DEC group campsite exclusively for our club Fri 17th to Mon 31st.Let him know your interest... can get about 10 to 15 caravans into the site.

Where Are They Now. Peter Introduced an new segment.Using a laser pointer and an Oz Explorer Map on the overhead, he indicated where our various “away” members were last heard of enjoying themselves.

First be advised Roger Freegard may be a little lost somewhere as he doesn’t work on the UTM Universal Transverse Mercator system... heretofore be known as Urinary Tract Monitor system.. His way points are plotted from tree to tree to tree to...........?

CSR group last heard of at Wolf Creek....For those who’ve seen the movie.. that sounds a tad ominous!!

And last but not least The Richard and Lee Nicholls couple were married today!Now they really are the Richard and Lee Nicholls ‘couple’.Geez Richard has it taken you this long to realise the bended knee is for more than checking out a vehicle stuck in the sand? Our Congratulations from all of us and wish you your obvious continuing happiness.

A Chain of Beacons will light around the perimeter of Australia and Tasmania on June 18 as part of the Bi-centenenary Celebration. Our Club has been asked to take part in this event. We have been asked to help with a beacon near Norseman. Members will be leaving on the 16th and arriving at The Nullarbor roadhouse on June17th. Ray Edwards organising.

Members planning to go should meet at Council House. Ray and Val Edwards, Doug and Ann Stafford, Roger and Glen Jones, Tom and Wendy Lynn, Gary Morris, Bill and Doris Harvey, Denis and Beris Coleman and Robin and Jean Silver.

the information about this proposed trip of interest.

The concept of a national network of beacons to mark the bicentenary was developed under the auspices of Professor Claudio Velez at Latrobe University. Reference: Australia’s Birthday Beacons library reference IBSN -07316 44468

A Governing Body was established by Latrobe University which included two members of the National 4WD Association, Athol Hodgson and John Cribbs. Mr Athol Hodgson were chief organisers along with representatives in each State and Territory. Mr Ray Edwards was the West Australian coordinator as he was at that time Vice President of the Club and President of the WA 4WD Association.

Fifteen member Clubs of the WA 4WD Association drove east of Norseman to assigned points at 15 kms intervals along the Eyre Highway. It was reported in the local newspaper in Norseman, The Norseman Today that 556 beacons were lit around Australia on that day in June. The chain of light was seen throughout the night all around Australia not only from the hill tops but also reported by aircraft at 29,000 feet across long distances such as the Eyre Highway.

In Norseman there was entertainment of various kinds and the entire town turned out to celebrate in the evening before lighting their beacon at the appointed time.

Beacons throughout history have been a way to communicate significant events. This celebration of the Australian way of life developed over the past 200 years from the days of the first establishment of penal colonies on the east coast.

The planning and coordination was immense to ensure that the beacons were lit on the same night in a carefully timed sequence. The first beacon was lit at Botany Bay on June 18 at sunset and then 30kms away the next beacon placed in the line of sight was lit. The chain of light stretched 15,000kms around the nation.

Fire has been a part of human civilisation from the beginning and is usual in all cultures. The Greeks learned of the fall of Troy when they saw beacon fires, indigenous people’s lit fires to warn other groups of the advance of Europeans into their territories. This is partly the explanation of why European settlers thought the land was uninhabited. In Geoffrey Blainey's book Triumph of the Nomads he describes the situation when Captain Cook on the Endeavour in 1770 sailed up the east coast he commented on the fires that seemed to follow them up the coast, not realising that that a communication network was in place.There was a chain of beacons across England in 1588 to warn of the advance of the Spanish armada and more recently for the Jubilee year reign of Queen Elizabeth 11 beacons were it again for the same reason. – Unification of the people.

In some places a medal was struck to mark the occasion. The ANZ Bank

sponsored the event in country towns and local people quickly got behind the celebration.

June was chosen for this celebration as the risk of a bush fire is low at this time of year. In some places people stood in the rain around the fire enjoying the companionship of neighbours and strangers.1. Participating groups were issued instructions by the Governing Body

on how to make a good bonfire It must be kindled easily and without fail at the appointed time2. Must blaze quickly without too much smoke3. Must continue to burn brightly for as long as needed4. Must subside gradually and fall inward and not topple over5. Must consume its materials completely leaving no charred material.

The Governor General summed up the occasion in his address at the lighting of the first beacon“May the light of our understanding, the warmth of our compassion and the fire of our enthusiasm always burn as bright and clear as these beacons that we light tonight here at Miranda Park Botany Bay.”
