tearing down the wall: rehabilitating and re-inhabiting sitethe gulch, atlanta, ga

“before I built a wall I’d ask to knowwhat was I walling in or walling out”

- robert frost

in 1992, vine city residents organized to protest the siting of the georgia dome along northside drive. now, twenty years later, the dome is slated to be demolished and replaced with an open-air stadium just one block south of its current location. peter marcuse writes that within cities, walls become not only manifestations of but also sustainers of social inequity. the urban ecological center uses the potential of site to meet the needs of the community. the site is opened up and returned to the neighborhood for recreational and educational use. the site also performs as a living machine, collecting and purifying stormwater runoff from the sub-watershed and sustaining the health of the community. the structure marries new with old, utilizing the salvageable embodied energy of the existing structure.

reimagining the fence:a charter high school for the artsatlanta, ga

“this fence doesn’t address the real problem, what happens when kids leave the school grounds?” council member aslon goow, patterson, nj

“fencing in this entire open space seems unnecessary, overly costly, and will ultimately prove more dangerous to the children it’s supposed to protect.” principal jim frazier, snoqualmie valley, wa

“peter munsing spoke in opposition to the fence for reasons including limited access to the field and track and the inability of police to sweep the area with a spotlight allowing more areas to hide. similarly, brian karr recommended security cameras in lieu of the fence. rick johnston and maureen nolan stated that funds raised in a capital campaign should be used to reinstate programs and staff that have previously been cut. ed emery and jesse stock said that a fence will not keep people out and prevent vandal-ism.” wyomissing area school district minutes

“accountability and transparency provide the consumer with important information about the quality of the education their children are receiving.” missouri school improvement program

“the incentives and sanctions associated with accountability systems in education reform had a significant and positive impact on test scores.” from hanushek and raymond, 2004

the micro-unit and the townhouse: a transitional strategy for urban sprawl and changing demographics along the beltline atlanta, ga

with madona cumar + kaitlyn pahel

a site that is a great location but a miserable place to be: a retail-rich superblock condition in the heart of atlanta. we propose a series of five residential buildings and a neighborhood park that take advantage of the historically challeng-ing topography. the scheme develops critical connections to atlanta’s emerging beltline, a 22 mile rail-to-transit-and-trail loop around downtown. units are designed to serve the needs of individuals not currently being met by the housing stock -- primarily singles and empty nesters. a palette of micro-units and townhomes combined with a suite of shared amenities in a net-zero energy/low-water development shows the promise of 21st century urban living in the south.

opening galataport:a model for enlightened development, public space, and authentic tourismistanbul, turkey

with will ramhold, ekram hassan, zeynep keskin, chuk lindberg, holden spaht, hee jin cho, maria velasquez, namrata dani + lindsey bolin

galataport, positioned at the mouth of the bosporus strait, has been a significant site for commercial and military activity since the beginning of the ottoman empire. over the past three decades, the 100,000 m2 site has transitioned from an industrial cargo port to a cruise port terminal, welcomed the addition of two new art museums, and retained buildings of historic significance. despite numerous permuta-tions in land use, public access to the waterfront along the site has always been restricted. a long string of proposals to redevelop galataport have failed due to public opposition. galataport should be redesigned so that is can serve the city, the neighborhood, and visitors alike.
