India’s IoT Potential

The dream of achieving digital India is not a reality if there is no right strategy for IOT because not only digital India will have contents available to the users on a digital platform but also the platforms will be connected with each other for better accessibility and convenience.

Today we are talking about smart cities, smart homes, smart schools, smart offices, etc., and these concepts are not going to remain as talking point in the future as it will

be a reality. Tomorrow sitting at home the citizens can have access to all the amenities and devices and from their personal devices can monitor and manage their connections.

This will have a far- reaching impact on the consumer and commercial market everywhere. It is believed that by 2020 there will be 80 billion connected devices and in India only it will be around 13 billion devices with market opportunity of 10-12 billion USD by the same period.

As it is estimated verticals including transport, wellness, healthcare, buildings, home, factories, agriculture, livestock, electric grids, water supply networks, and of course individual consumers will be at the forefront to drive IOT adoption in India.

The biggest positive point is that today Indian authorities have expressed strong intention to develop manufacturing and R&D which will create a lot of momentum around IOT architecture along with sensors manufacturing and software development to control these sensors. Of course there is a huge challenge for the country but this is for sure that India is a completely virgin market from IOT perspective.

The ongoing discussion around creating 100 smart cities will have completely connected architecture because smart city means devices stationary and mobile would be connected. As per NASSCOM, there will be millions of devices connected in next three to five years.

So to conclude, even though India has all intents to do it happen but at the imple-mentation side it has to react quickly and make all the plans actionable. ë

Cisco Reveals Midyear Security ReportThe Cisco 2015 Midyear Security Report analyzes threat intelligence and cybersecurity trends, reveals the critical need for organizations to reduce time to detection (TTD) in order to remediate against sophisticated attacks by highly motivated threat actors.

The Angler Exploit Kit represents the types of common threats that will challenge organiza-tions as the digital economy and the Internet of Everything (IoE) create new attack vectors and monetization opportunities for adversaries.

With the digitization of business and the IoE, malware and threats become even more pervasive. The average TTD for Cisco Advanced Malware Protection (AMP), with its retrospec-tive analysis of attacks that make it past existing defences, is 46 hours.

Other key findings include: Exploits of Adobe Flash vulnerabilities, In the first half of 2015, there has been a 66% increase in Adobe Flash

Player vulnerabilities reported by the Common Vulnerabilities and Exposure (CVE) system over all of 2014, Ransomware remains highly lucrative for hackers as they continue to release new vari-ants and Dridex: Campaigns on the Fly.

Organizations face significant challenges with point product solutions and need to consider an integrated threat defence architecture that embeds security everywhere and will enforce at any control point. As the security industry addresses increased fragmentation, a dynamic threat landscape, and how to cope with a rising shortfall of skilled talent, businesses must invest in effective, sustainable and trusted security solutions and professional services.

John N. Stewart, SVP, Chief Security and Trust Officer, Cisco said, “Trust is tightly linked to secu-rity, and transparency is key so industry-leading technology is only half the battle.”

SEAGATE EXTENDS ITS RELATIONSHIP WITH HPSeagate extendes its alliance agreement with HP to equip its high performance computing (HPC) solutions with ClusterStor scale-out storage capabilities. Seagate’s ClusterStor combines a unique scale out storage architecture with the Lustre parallel file system together with optimized Seagate storage media to deliver the most scalable and highest performance storage solution for the HPC market. By removing complexities associated with deploying and maintaining traditional high performance storage systems, ClusterStor significantly reduces the time and operational costs required to meet mission-critical needs. In addition to MIT, the enhanced HP HPC solutions will benefit a wide range of users in fields such as bio informatics, pharmaceutical discovery, upstream oil and gas modelling, weather simulation, academic and government research. “As a result of this partnership, customers can now purchase a complete end-to-end HPC storage solution born from two of the most trusted technology companies in the business,” said Ken Claffey, VP & GM, Seagate

FUJITSU DEVELOPS USER INTERFACE TECHNOLOGY

Fujitsu Design and Social Science Laboratory plans to commence field trials on Fujitsu Laboratories-devel-oped user interface (UI) technology that converts an entire room into a digital space, and on a co-creation support application developed by Fujitsu Social Science Laboratory. The trial will be conducted from August at the HAB-YU platform, a

venue developed by Fujitsu Design to facilitate new value-creation initiatives. Space-digitalizing UI technology will help people from the small screens of smart devices, tablets, and PCs to project a virtual window system over a large shared space, such as walls and tables, letting people display and share information with simple operations.

Using the co-creation support appli-cation , which implements this new UI technology, materials that people bring into a space can be displayed and shared in a large format so that information can be easily organized when people are brainstorming or collaborating.

The trial of the technology would be done with consideration to the

Distribution of digital prompt cards to individual workspaces, Individual work support (creation of digital sticky notes and transfer to shared space), Group work support (organization and sharing of digital sticky notes), Bringing home results of workshop brainstorming and Storing and reproducing workshop results

The digital universe is doubling every two years. But that isn’t a reason for worry for enterprises. They are buying more storage than ever but the problem lies in the management of this data. So while, there has been massive spikes in storage demand, the focus and the

opportunity really lies in building solutions that make managing digital data less painful.

Sensors and automation are decades old technology and many confuse it with today’s Internet of Things. While IoT does include sensors and automation technologies at its core, it is the ability to analyse the data on a fly that is creating real business value from IoT and attracting CEOs across vertical to take a close look at how their organization can benefit from this fledgling technology.

The vision of Smart Cities is quickly becoming a reality as urban cities across India look to create communities that become the places where people want to live and where businesses seek to invest. The transformation to Smart Cities requires an ecosystem that brings both existing and new partners together to unlock the tremendous value that emerges from connecting people, processes, data and things. With IoT, smart cities will be able to respond better to their citizens needs and also improve their environment, becom-ing efficient, sustainable and liveable ecosystems.

According to technology research firm Gartner, IoT devices

installed base (excluding PCs, tablets and smartphones), will grow to 26 billion units in 2020, up from just 0.9 billion in 2009. The IoT will connect 1.1 billion devices in smart cities this year and a whopping 9.7 billion devices by 2020, while smart homes will lead with 294 million connected devices in 2015. Smart homes and smart buildings, representing 45 percent of connected things in use this year, are projected to touch 81 percent by 2020, with increasing investments and service opportunities.

Industrial companies are rapidly implementing programs to realize financial gains from the Industrial Internet, motivated by the potential for high-order benefits and the threat of competitor advancement. While current implementations consist of asset monitoring, diagnostics and fundamental analysis, the lure of game-changing market shifts and the need for strong regulatory compliance are driving investments in predictive analytics and optimization for decision-making. Overcoming barriers such as data silos and lack of robust security will not be easy. However, it’s clear the race is on with urgency across the executive team and with board-level focus.

“IoT is about small data that drives big outcomes, and we at HDS recognize this need. We are building a robust analytics framework that uniquely combines Hitachi’s formidable industrial, societal and business expertise with its rich portfolio of data infrastructure

and analytics solutions. Through our strategic acquisitions of oXya, Pantascene and Pentaho, we are accelerating our Social Innovation vision and IoT product roadmap,” explained Yogesh Sawant, Director, Partner Sales and Field Alliance Organi-zation, India, Hitachi Data Systems.

HDS acquired Pentaho in June 2015 as

a part of its overarching Social Innovation strategy and expects the acquisition to help it further capitalize on Internet of Things market opportunities. “Through the integration with the Pentaho platform, we are now extending our data integration, refinement, monitoring, manage-ment, and orchestration capabilities to deliver an incomparably sophisticated data analytics stack. This stack powers its Social Innovation solutions and delivers on the full promise of the “Internet of Things that matter,” by helping businesses to derive rich insights from their data with faster time to value, and supporting the development of smarter, safer, healthier and more efficient societies,” Sawant said.

Recognizing that Big Data analytics is the foundation of the Industrial Internet, GE and Accenture fielded a survey in China, France, Germany, India, South Africa, the UK and the United States that explored the state of Big Data analytics and how it is being viewed across eight industries. Sectors surveyed were Aviation, Wind, Power Generation, Power Distribution, Oil and Gas, Rail, Manufacturing, and Mining.

According to the survey, 73 percent of compa-nies are already investing more than 20 percent of their overall technology budget on Big Data analytics—and more than two in 10 are investing more than 30 percent. Moreover, three-fourths of executives expect spending level to increase just in the next year.

Across the industries surveyed, 80 to 90 per-cent of companies indicated that Big Data analyt-ics is either the top priority for the company or in

the top three. This finding is especially strong in the Aviation industry, where 61 percent of those surveyed noted that analytics is their top-ranked priority; this number drops to about 30 percent or less for industries such as Power Distribution (28 percent), Power Generation (31 percent), Oil and Gas (31 percent) and Mining (24 percent)

Indeed, 53 percent of all survey respondents indicated that their Board of Directors is the primary influencer of their Big Data adoption strategy— more than those citing the CEO (47 percent), the CIO (37 percent) or a business line P&L executive (15 percent).

CHALLENGESGartner predicts that IoT security requirements will reshape and expand over half of all global enterprise IT security programs by 2020 due to changes in supported platform and service scale, diversity and function.

The two main challenges posed to successful IoT implementation, is the lack of policy to ensure network safety and security associated with billions of connected devices, as well as need to create the robust hardware to support software applications in Internet of Things (IoT) devices.

While various vendors are devicing their own ways to store, analyze and transfer data from the sensors, little has been done so far to handle security and privacy issues of this data. For example, a smart band stores all your health data, your daily activity, your sleeping and waking up time etc. If someone gets access to this data, it can be used in many malicious ways.

Similarly, there is a lack of standardization in tools and technologies being built for IoT, which may lead to issues such as vendor lock-in and interoperability challenges in future.

However, on the brighter side, India has already released its first IoT framework last year in October that aims to create a $15 billion (around Rs.92,700 crore today) market by 2020, impacting the growth of connected devices from the current 200 million to 2.7 billion by 2020, largely by partnering with private firms.

The government proposes to set aside $21 million over a period of three years as 50% of the investment required for at least five projects each from categories that include smart cities, water, environment, health, waste management, agriculture, safety and supply chain.

Experts believe if the implementation of these policies is done right, India could lead the world in the adoption and use cases of Internet of Things. ë

FUJITSU

Fujitsu Laboratories announced development of the world’s first technology for fast and automatic setup of client-segregated virtual networks that are built over multiple

Linux containers. These containers offer virtual-ization for high-speed launches and running.

To use containers, which launch in roughly 0.2 seconds, in the cloud like virtual machines, quick setup of client-segregated virtual networks is required. Previously, including the time required to configure physical switches, it took several seconds to set up a network built over multiple containers, which made it impractical for clients to use an environment consisting of multiple containers.

Now, by distributing network information in advance to the physical switches, and automati-cally creating a network upon the detection of container activation, Fujitsu Laboratories has developed technology that enables client-segre-gated networks built over multiple containers to be set up within one second. This enables a system on the scale of several hundred containers to be used immediately following their launch. As a result, systems can immediately be scaled out, supporting, for example, web services that tempo-rarily experience sudden spikes in traffic, such as during special events or marketing campaigns.

This technology will be announced at Asia-Pacific Network Operations and Management Symposium (APNOMS) 2015, opening August 19 in Pusan, South Korea.

BACKGROUNDWith special events and online campaigns, in the span of hours, web services can see sudden spikes in traffic. Because highly variable traffic can affect qual-ity of service, cloud-computing technologies that

TECHNOLOGICAL ISSUESFrom a security standpoint, using containers for IaaS environments requires that network resources be segregated by client, especially so that communications data from one network does not reach another client. Although contain-ers can be launched in roughly 0.2 seconds, compared with several minutes to launch a virtual machine, network setup required several seconds because device settings were configured from the operations-management system via the controller. As such, even with a fast-launching container, network setup lagged considerably behind. For this reason, the challenge has been to set up client-segregated networks spanning multiple containers as quickly as the containers can be launched.

ABOUT THE TECHNOLOGYTypically, virtualization-technology infrastruc-ture is built over multiple physical servers, and the containers that get used depend on the status of the physical servers launched. To accom-modate this, Fujitsu Laboratories developed a technology that distributes and pools each client’s network information, in the form of the interface address (MAC addresses) and the virtual-net-work (Virtual LAN, or VLAN) information, from the controller to the physical switch beforehand.

Using this technology, the network settings that took time to pass through the controller are already configured before the container launches. Additionally, by integrating with the newly developed functions described below, it becomes possible to rapidly set up networks following the launch of additional containers.

- Based on the previously distributed network information, the physical switch is automatically set immediately after container launch.

- Coinciding with container launch, VLAN configured for the virtual switch in the server.

- Container teardowns are continuously monitored, and network resources are automati-cally released when a container is torn down.

RESULTSThis technology makes it possible for single-client virtual networks that combine virtual switches and physical switches to be set up in roughly 0.2 seconds. Together with container launch time, a system is ready for use in less than one second. This technology delivers a flexible application execution environment on such systems where multiple clients reside, providing services with the agility to adapt to spikes in access that occur with events, campaigns or other activities by swiftly scaling out, thereby avoiding opportunity losses. ë

can dynamically allocate resources have come into widespread use in recent years. As a result, the time needed to scale out infrastructure has been slashed from a few days or weeks to just a few minutes.

There are, however, many situations where even a delay of a few minutes is too slow, such as when a new item for a game is being made available for only a limited time or when many commuters are simultaneously searching for an alternative route due to a train delay. There has, therefore, been a need for technology that can instantaneously mitigate spiking server loads. Containers have attracted attention as a virtualization technology that is well suited to such situations. In contrast to virtual machines, which virtualize the entire server, containers are virtualization technology that separates application-execution environments on the host operating system. As there is no need to launch an operating system for each virtual machine, the virtualization overhead is smaller, making for lighter launching and running. By taking advantage of this feature, containers enable infra-structure as a service (IaaS) environments that can respond to load fluctuations instantaneously and with high efficiency.

ZOHO

Zoho launched two new products today—New Zoho Mail and ZohoSalesIQ— both made in India. The New Zoho Mail brings social media-like communica-

tion features to Zoho’s email service Zoho Mail, making collaboration smoother and simpler for businesses. ZohoSalesIQ, meanwhile, is a power-ful tool that enables businesses to identify and engage with potential leads and customers among its website visitors.

“From serving the world out of India, busi-nesses are moving to making software in India. Zoho has progressed to the next step—innovating out of India,” said Sridhar Vembu, CEO, Zoho Corp. “Our vision has always been to be a global product company. This meant building world-class software, competing with world leaders like Google and Microsoft, and supporting global customers—all from India. Today we have over 15 million users spread across 120 countries, and a product portfolio broader and more integrated than that of any cloud software company.”

Zoho, which enables businesses worldwide to manage all their transactions in the cloud without switching technologies or platforms, has launched several innovative products over the last few months, all made in India. These include Zoho

ShowTime, an interactive presentation tool, and Inbox Insight, a mobile app that acts as a search engine for a user’s inbox.

THE NEW ZOHO MAILAs Vembu said, “Email, as it stands today, hasn’t evolved with the times. We’ve reinvented email to accommodate a modern, fast-paced, social and mobile workforce that predominantly works on the cloud.”

The prominent features of the New Zoho Mail are:1. Collaboration Through Streams: Forwarding emails is outdated. Users can now share an email with their colleagues by simply tagging them in the Streams window below an email. Those tagged can reply using comments, facilitating a contextual discussion around the mail without going back-and-forth via ‘Reply’ mails, much like discussions around a status posted on social media.2. Shared Folders: Users can share entire folders of emails with their colleagues. They can also set permissions, like Read or Read/Write, to control the extent of access.3. All Attachments in One Place: Users can access all their email attachments, organized by their file type, in the ‘Attachment Viewer’. From

here, users can view the related email, compose a new email with the attachment and move any file to their favourite cloud storage services.4. Create Calendar Events, Tasks or Notes: The New Zoho Mail is tightly integrated with Calendar, Tasks and Notes. From any email, users can select text and then create a task, note or an event out of it. They can also interact with their colleagues in Streams about the task, note or the event they’ve created.

5. Stylish and fast UI: The New Zoho Mail is more elegant, more powerful with its collabora-tion features and has a faster UI.

The first 25 mailboxes, with 5GB storage per user, are free. There are three paid packages: Standard 10GB (150/user/month), Standard 15GB (210/user/month) and Premium which has 25GB per user (600/user/month).

The Zoho Mail mobile apps for iOS and Android devices are available immediately. The apps will be upgraded for the New Zoho Mail later this year.

ZOHOSALESIQZohoSalesIQ, is a website visitor insight tool that also lets website owners engage with visitors in a meaningful way. Its main features are:1. Real-time Website Visitor Insights: With SalesIQ, users can gather insights about their website visitors in real-time, including the pages they have visited and time spent on the page. They can also see if a visitor has returned for the second or third time. This information is also available offline along with a list of all website visitors,

prioritized on their lead score.2. Identify Hot, Warm or Cold leads: Users can pre-set conditions, like time spent on the site or if the visitor is returning for the second or third time, to identify potential customers among the large number of people who visit their websites every day. Based on the conditions--there are 20 combinations possible-- SalesIQ will sort visitors as Hot, Warm or Cold leads, and give them scores indicating how likely they are to buy.3. Live Chat: The live chat feature enables users to engage with the website visitors who can start a chat and pose queries or request information. Alternatively, the users can proactively start a conversation with Hot leads. With the help of chat history and the visitor’s history (pages visited, time spent on the website, etc.) chat agents can have a contextual and more productive engagement with the visitors—like offering discounts or special deals to those who seem to be stuck at a payment page.4. Intelligent Triggers: Users can set up auto-mated triggers to increase engagement with the website visitors. For example, a chat window with

the message ‘How may I help you?’ will pop-up if a visitor stays on a page for more than five minutes. If a visitor is from another country, the messages can be shown in a different language. 5. Actionable Analytics: Users can covert their website visitor data into actionable analytics. They can segment website visitor traffic based on geo-location, number of visits and past interac-tions, and also measure the performance of their intelligent triggers and tweak their messaging for optimal results. 6. Integration with CRM, CMS, eCom-merce, Help Desk and email campaign: Users can store potential customers as leads in their CRM, and be alerted when they return to the website. ZohoSalesIQ is also integrated with more than a dozen CMS platforms, including Wordpress and Tumblr, and 17 eCommerce platforms like Opencart and Shopify. It is also integrated with numerous Help Desk software, including Zoho Support, email campaign apps like Zoho Campaign, social media sites like Facebook, and Analytic tools such as Google Analytics. ë

GARTNER

The Intellectual Property (IP) & Science business of Thomson Reuters, the world’s leading provider of intelligent information for busi-nesses and professionals, announced

the launch of its State of Innovation website: http://stateofinnovation.com. This is a global destination for authoritative innovation trend data and industry-specific insights focusing on the Lifecycle of Innovation and showcasing the iterative process of discovering, protecting and commercializing ideas.

The hype surrounding the Internet of Things (IoT) in the home is growing rapidly, according to Gartner, Inc., as the battle for the IoT gateway in the connected home gets underway.

“The numerous IoT applications for the home include smart stoves, which tell you how to cook a meal and provide recipes; and smart wash-ers and dryers, which help you determine the optimum time to run a load of laundry,” said Paul O’Donovan, principal research analyst at Gartner. “Add to that smart lighting, which can be operated remotely and programed to dim or turn on or off at specific times; thermostats, which can have your living space at the desired temperature when you walk in the door; and entertainment devices, which can stream programming to your display whenever you want to watch it.”

As home appliances have increased in smart-ness, cellular and cable connections improved, and pricing declined, the desire or ability to moni-tor and control the home as a holistic platform of devices and appliances has emerged.

“Many IoT applications are triggered by sensors

and need data management, but there is no single IoT gateway to the home,” said Mr. O’Donovan. “As Internet-connected homes become increas-ingly smarter, the gateway is becoming the “center” for connecting the different devices and home appliances to make the management of the ecosystem happen.”

The home IoT gateway market is expanding rapidly. The number of smart connected homes is expected to grow from between 100 million and 200 million homes now to between 500 million and 700 million homes by 2020.

The lack of a good business model or the immaturity of home IoT products has not stopped gateway makers from trying to develop the market to grab share in the home IoT oppor-tunity. Cable companies, Internet companies, alarm companies and mobile phone operating system providers are actively creating platforms and ecosystems in an attempt to break into the market.

Gartner predicts that the most successful home gateway provider will develop a system that seamlessly integrates with nearly any vendor’s IoT application and is relatively painless to the homeowner. A system that locks homeowners into one specific operating system limits their opportunity, as consumers will want to exercise their preference in terms of the IoT products they choose.

Multiple home platforms have emerged, designed to capitalize on or create an ecosystem of smart home things that the gateway must connect to. Some of the platforms are beginning to open up, or at least work with the others to

minimize the different number of platforms that the consumer and the gateway must deal with. Some smart home solutions are even taking advantage of this void and creating hubs that act as a central command system for the smart home devices, using multiple communication protocols to connect to all of the smart devices in the home and communicate to the world through the IoT gateway.

“As the IoT gateway market emerges, ISPs will be the early winners in the battle for the home gateway, provided they develop solutions or partner with hub manufacturers. The mobile phone providers will gain a smaller part of this market, but ultimately the cellular model will not have enough bandwidth to compete with the ISP solution. Longer term, there will need to be an integrated device, whereby the gateway is also the hub, or integrated hub and gateway solutions will be needed,” said Mr. O’Donovan. ë

SAP, Toyota InfoTechnology Center and VeriFone Connect Cars and Provide Drivers With Simplified Fueling

SAP AG’s co-innovation project with Toyota InfoTechnology Center USA (Toyota ITC) and VeriFone will help dramatically simplify drivers’ fueling experience.Currently, drivers need to deal with multiple systems to find “the right” gas stations. When they arrive, drivers must authorize payment by swiping a card and punching in various identification codes, or paying the gas station attendant with cash. With the prototype, consumers can use a one-touch, one-screen solution to navigate to the closest gas station, authorize automatic payment electronically and receive personalized coupons. The announcement was made at the 14th SAP Automotive Forum 2014, being held July 1-2 in Leipzig, Germany.

Built on SAP HANA Cloud Platform, the solution aggregates information on a vehicle’s location, route and fuel level as well as points of interest. VeriFone provides point-of-sale (POS) solutions and Toyota ITC provides telematics data. These processes and information are integrated via the SAP Cloud portfolio and pre-

sented in a screen on the Toyota ITC dashboard, allowing drivers to manage the entire transaction in one click.

The use case works as follows: The driver is notified when the vehicle is low in fuel. Then, leveraging the Toyota ITC telematics system, the vehicle recommends a gas station location based on real-time context such as location and the vehicle’s fuel level. It also takes into account a driver’s pre-entered personal preferences such as preferred gas stations and which stations have opted in to the program. When the car arrives at the gas station and stops at the pump, the driver can authorize the transaction with a single click from their car or app on a mobile device. Gas sta-tions may also provide discounts, loyalty points and other coupons based on the driver’s profile. Once fueling is completed, the driver receives an electronic receipt. Drivers can view all previous fueling transactions and easily export them to other systems, such as an expense report.

The system uses Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), an emerging wireless standard that enables

micro-location services. By combining BLE, SAP HANA Cloud Platform, Toyota ITC telematics system and VeriFone POS systems, the three companies have developed a consumer-centered connected car service.

“Toyota ITC has been an innovative driver for Toyota Motor Corporation here in the Silicon Valley,” said Hironori Miyakoshi, executive vice president and COO, Toyota ITC. “In light of the paradigm shift in the automotive space toward a connected vehicle, we have been focused on enabling solutions and developing a better user experience by looking at a wide variety of emerging technologies and services. The collaboration with SAP and VeriFone was another major milestone in our efforts to create a better driving experience.”

“Our collaboration with SAP and Toyota cre-ates an exciting commerce experience that tran-scends payment by delivering convenience, value and unique interactions between merchants and their customers,” said Vin D’Agostino, senior vice president of Commerce Enablement, VeriFone. “VeriFone has long history of delivering secure payment technology, targeted content and more to many of the world’s leading petroleum brands, helping them leverage the latest available tech-nologies to unlock new revenue opportunities.”

“SAP innovation continues to make con-nected cars closer to becoming a reality for consumers,” said Gil Perez, senior vice president, Connected Vehicles, SAP. “Our collaboration with Toyota ITC and VeriFone is transforming business models and offering people a simple and intuitive user experience. Our cloud and SAP HANA technology can help industries — like the automotive or oil and gas businesses — do things simply that weren’t previously possible or even imaginable.” ë
