PRESIDENT’S CORNERJuly 2016
Greetings Fellow Aviators,
This month I’d like to thank everyone for the way you have embraced our cleaning kits in each of our aircraft. The remarks I have received have been great! I realize that there needs to be some tweaking of the kit but overall it makes me smile when I hear that everyone is taking pride in our fleet. I have to give credit to Brian Relin for being the driving force behind getting this done. Thank you Brian for making this happen.I’d like to ask for your help with our monthly meeting speakers. If you know of someone who has a great story or something of interest in the aviation world that you think our members would enjoy, we would love to know about it. Contact Bob Niedwiecki at [email protected] with the contact information. One other thing we could use some help with is a new location for our meetings. We used to use the McKinney Performing Arts center in downtown McKinney but it started getting expensive and when the city took over the FBO, we could use the conference room again. If any of you have been to a Saturday meeting, you know how crowded the meetings have become. We need to find a location near the airport where we can accommodate 35 to 50 people that is reasonably priced. Please let me or one of the other officers know if you have any suggestions. Finally, if you missed our happy hour last month at Dukes Icehouse in Addison, you missed a great time. A big thanks goes out to Keith Gutierrez for changing the night that his group normally gets together and joining us. It made for a great time and allowed a lot of people to meet for the first time. I’d like to invite everyone of you to our next happy hour on the last Wednesday of the month. As I type this, I haven’t found a location yet but as soon as I get one, Charles will send out a message to everyone with the the location or you can check our Facebook page. I encourage each of you to contribute to the page as well.
Once again, I am privileged to be part of such a great group of individuals. Thank you for keeping us going strong!

1. Keep the receipts from any fuel or oil you purchase while away from McKinney. Turn in the receipts (not a copy) to the treasurer by placing them in the box in the key locker. Your account will be credited for the gallons of fuel purchased at the published rate (if you pay less than the published rate then you benefit from the savings). Be sure to write your MEMBER NUMBER on the receipts.
2. Tiedown fees, landing fees, deicing, engine preheat, ...etc, will not be credited. Only fuel & oil.
3. If you are away from home and there is a maintenance problem which prevents you from returning home, you may spend up to $200 to get the plane repaired, and you will be reimbursed. Any maintenance above $200 MUST be approved by the club FIRST. A list of phone numbers for approvals is provided with each tach log

Trip Report - Stafford Air & Space Museumby Charles Galles
I’m closing in on my 50 hours of PIC cross-country time and I have enjoyed finding hidden aviation gems in the area. One such example is in Weatherford, Oklahoma. This small town about 70 miles west of Oklahoma City happens to be the boyhood home of Gen. Tom Stafford USAF (Ret) and home to the Stafford Air & Space Museum.
Gen. Stafford was picked as one of “The New Nine” - the second group of astronauts chosen by NASA. This group of astronauts formed the core group of commanders for most of the Apollo moon missions and Stafford was commander of Apollo 10.
You can inspect items from the earliest days of flight right through the space age. The museum contains some amazing artifacts from the missions and programs he was involved in during his career. I had forgotten that Gen. Stafford flew with Alexi Leonov the first human spacewalker during the 1975 Apollo-Soyuz mission. There are a number of flight items related to that mission. Inside the museum are models of the Apollo spacecraft and some of the most powerful rocket engines ever built. I was really impressed with this museum - it’s truly a world class aviation museum.
Getting there was pretty easy, just 175 nm @ heading 322. I flew direct with flight following and ATC switched me over to Ft. Sill approach as I flew under the Washita and Sheppard MOA on my way up there. The museum is on the field at Stafford airport (KOJA). For more information see their website at http://staffordmuseum.org
If you go - the FBO staff will help you with parking and fueling the plane. If you buy gas at the FBO, admission to the museum (normally about $7) is free. They have a few crew cars that they will pull up to the door for you to go into town for a bite to eat. Everyone there was very friendly
