Well, by the time you’re reading this, our Junior Summer Sailing Program will be in full swing. Yes, starting on June 27th and the five weeks following, we’ll be having about 90-something young sailors down at the club honing their sailing skills. As many may

know already, during the weeks that the Junior Summer program is taking place, the Galley willbe open for lunch, Tuesday through Friday, from 11am to 2pm. For those that are interested, wealso have the Twillight Dinners taking place on Thursday evenings throughout the summer. TheGalley will be open starting at 5pm for drinks and snacks, with dinner being served from 6:30 to8:30pm. If you’d like to join us for dinner on those nights, please be sure to make your reservationat least the day before, so we can make sure we have enough food for everyone.

I know it may sound like a broken record, but I’d really like to stress that it’s important for members make theirreservations for all dinners and special breakfasts by the posted deadline, so that we can buy enough food. It really helpsus out when people make their reservations in a timely manner, so thank you to all who have been good about getting theirreservations in on time. It is much appreciated!

What a month we had at our club! ABYC was rocking and rolling every weekend!Memorial Day Regatta and the dinner was a great way to start off the summer, good

sailing and a fantastic party, thank you to all the volunteers that made it happen! The I14 Nationalsand Olympic Classes regatta was the following Friday thru Sunday. We had a great turnout forboth of the combined events with sailors coming from all over the western United States.

Thank you to the viper fleet for hosting the General Membership meeting! Dr. Lowe fromThe CSULB Shark Research center was on hand to educate the membership on the changesto the ecology of the Southern California waters and the effect that the positive changes havehad on the marine life surrounding us. It is amazing what we Californians have accomplished

over the last half of the century to clean up and protect our ocean and its inhabitants. Dr. Lowe also dispelled many of therumors surrounding the reason for the increased sightings of White Sharks (do not call them Great- we do not want to givethem big heads) in our local waters.

That Sunday the Big, Bigger and Biggest male members of our club squeezed themselves into the venerableNaples Sabot to compete in Men’s Day. A blast was had by all!

Just four days after that our club co-hosted with help from LBYC the annual Long Beach Race Week. ABYCsupplied over 60 volunteers for the event. Two of our members, Steve Kuritz and Mark Townsend were the PRO’s on twoof the three courses. Robin Townsend and Jennifer Kuritz did a wonderful job of organizing much of the event making itsmooth and enjoyable for the many out of town competitors! A special thanks to Chuck Clay who was the co-chair withRandy Bairds from LBYC.As I write this article I am watching 90 Jr. Sailors taking to the water and learning to enjoy what we all know is the greatestway of life there is!

ABYC is truly the Place to Be!Latham Bell

A huge thanks to everyone who turned out to help achieve another successful Long Beach Race Week. As I mentioned in my article last month it takes months of preparation to execute a successful regatta. LBRW is an exception, it’s an exception because is takes a lot more

time, effort and coordination to get it right.LBRW stretches our race equipment supplies to the limit. We supplied almost 3,000 feet of anchor

rode, 20 anchors, 200 feet of anchor chain, at least 16 different marks. All this equipment was loaded(and unloaded) into 6 mark set boats.

While those might be some impressive numbers the more impressive numbers are those relatedto the people who made it all happen and the 100’s of hours spent by the dedicated volunteers. On the water alone, therewere over 60 volunteers for three days of racing. Over 1,400 hours of scoring, recording, timing, signaling and PRO’ing.Add at least another 30-40 landside volunteers who manned the gate, wrangled trailers, managed the flow of boat launchingand retrieval, helped with logistics, directed traffic and much more.

Thanks for all who helped wrangle equipment and boats to make this a great race week.Dave Schack

The Key to Success(fully) Unlocking the Beach Access Gate is now Available! The beach access gate has previously been locked with a combination lock, which unfortunately too many nonmembers had access to, compromising club grounds security. A new security padlock has replaced the old combo

lock. If you want access to the beach, a staff member will unlock the gate for you. Alternatively, members may purchase

a security key with a $50 deposit (similar to the auto gate opener). Please contact Sheila in the office to obtain a BeachAccess Key. [email protected]

The Junior Sailing Program is in full session. Both Liz Ackerman and Alli Prizlowhave done a fantastic job of Co-Directorship and we have every bit ofconfidence in them steering us through the summer. A few nights ago was the

official start of the program with the Parent Orientation meeting. The bar was open toallow for an informal meet and greet with the majority of the Board of Directors, andJunior Advisory Committee (“JAC”) with parents, children, and coaches. A generousattendance was enjoyed and a lot of hands were shaken!

Just a few days later, the coaching staff received their first aid and CPRtraining that is so essential for safety. (Testimony to this is our very own Mark Ryanwho literally saved a 4 year old’s life by using CPR while he was teaching sailing at Leeway.)

With the end of school just last week for most kids, the Coaching Orientation, and the very popular Long BeachRace Week at both ABYC and LBYC, the first day of sailing was on the following Monday. The summer is going to goby very fast and we appreciate the membership for accommodating this excellent Program financially and emotionally. We hope that future members will come from the good times that these kids and families will have and consider ABYCtheir “home away from home” like so many of us do.

I will see you on the water…Steve Bloemeke

GOOD WINDS, GOOD TIMES AT CONCLUSION OF ULLMAN SAILS LONG BEACH RACEWEEKIf there were any dusty sailors, following last night’s Mount Gay Rum party at Long Beach

Yacht Club, it wasn’t evident in the level of racing on the final day of Ullman Sails Long Beach RaceWeek (LBRW).

Competitors greeted the day head-on, with tight racing in 14 classes on three windward-leeward and random legcourses.

Long Beach Yacht Club (LBYC) unseated LBRW co-host Alamitos Bay Yacht Club (ABYC) in the Yacht ClubChallenge. The trophy is awarded based on the cumulative score of a team of three boats, competing in different classes– one of which must be a Catalina 37. LBYC edged out ABYC by a slim .02 points thanks to a strong performance by BruceCooper and his J/70 crew, Medicine Man, and Dave Hood, who clinched his fourth Catalina 37 National Championshiptitle today, in a dog-eat-dog battle with Chuck Clay’s ABYC team.

Insanity won in the Farr 40s, and Jim held off Caper by one point, in J/120s.One sailor on Code Blue defied the Marine Department’s Shark Advisory against swimming and went for an

inadvertent dip at the windward mark. Skipper Robert Marcus and his Code Blue crew were able to retrieve the man andregain some lost ground, to capture the Schock 35 National Championship title.

Marcus noted a revival in the Schock 35 class has been fueled by new boat ownership, and having their own one-

ABYC member and Arizona resident Dirk Hacker checks in with a report this month:The Radial Laser fleet consisted of 17 boats, many Junior sailors participating. The Standard Rig

Laser fleet was smaller with 5 boats...but made for a tight, close grouping around the marks. This madefor a speed contest between boats. If you found a good puff and changed gears quickly...you could stay

in the hunt with the others off-wind.The wind took a bit longer than usual to fill in during late afternoon. If you could endure the “washing machine”

effect of less wind vs waves...then better finishes resulted. The wind ranged 14-16 knots by the last race each day.

design class in LBRW has made, “a huge difference in attracting new owners.” The invigorated class is ramping up withnew rules and a program going forward, including future participation in LBRW.

While racing was extremely close in most divisions, including PHRF A where Picosa beat Mexican Divorce by justone point, with E-Ticket two points behind; in other categories the dominance was indisputable. Venom put the squeeze onthe 16-boat Viper 640 fleet, while Relapse controlled the Flying Tigers with six bullets and one second place finish. VictorWild’s Fox outwitted five rivals in the Fast 50s division, and Valkyrie slayed the Sportboat fleet.

Reigning J/70 World Champion Flojito y Cooperando handsomely won the J/70 division, with Bruce Golison’sMidlife Crisis in second and Catapult, owned by Joel Ronning, third. The upcoming J/70 World Championship regattaslated for San Francisco in September, brought LBRW its largest J/70 fleet to date. Winner Julian Fernandez Neckelmannsaid he had raced LBRW “many times” in the Farr 40 division, but was glad to return with Flojito y Cooperando to tune upfor the Worlds saying, “LBRW is a fantastic regatta. It’s a lot of fun and although we expected more breeze, we need to sailin all conditions, so it’s good practice.”

This burgeoning fleet drew several big guns including World Champion Bill Hardesty, on Flojito y Cooperando, andJohn Kostecki – Olympic medalist, America’s Cup champion, and Rolex Yachtsman of the Year – on Catapult; addingcachet, but also challenge.

“The competition is very tough,” admitted Corinthian sailor Geroge Hershman. Racing in his first regatta on a newJ/70 Solarcoaster, he said, “We have a steep learning curve, but I like seeing how I stack up against the pros.” Hershmannhas competed in LBRW in other divisions, and his company Swinerton Renewable Engery is a leading sponsor. “As arenewable energy service company, supporting a sport that is environmentally friendly, like sailing, is important to us. Andit’s always been a great regatta, with great sailing and a lot of fun.” Herschmann acknowledged the pro talent provides anexcellent learning opportunity for Corinthian racers. In that division Chris Raab and Dale Williams proved superlative, inSugoi.

Some of the most rousing competition took place in the Catalina 37 fleet, where David Hood and his LBYC teamstruggled to defend their National Championship title.

Going into Sunday’s races, Hood was one point ahead of the rival ABYC Team, but a challenging first race of theday put ABYC and LBYC in a tie. Going into the final race of the regatta, “we were in full match race mode,” said Hood. “Wetried to stay close to ABYC, but there was a lot of great racing by the other teams too.”

“It was a chess match, and not your normal Long Beach conditions,” added LBYC tactician Randy Smith. Theimpact of the marine layer saw the left hand of the course favored more than usual, resulting in “a tricky weekend” compoundedby a “minefield of kelp.”

Meanwhile, ABYC had enjoyed a great start in the day’s first race and a promising finish. But the final race was“really intense” said co-skipper Chuck Clay. “It was a full-on tacking duel” with ABYC and LBYC so intent on covering eachother, “we dug ourselves to the back of the fleet.” At one point LBYC and ABYC were in seventh and eighth places, in thenine-boat fleet: nearly sacrificing their podium places to a second LBYC team skippered by John Shadden.

But Hood had a better set at the top mark, and “stretched it out” Clay admitted. “It was a super tight regatta, but alot of fun.”

Hood’s finish helped LBYC triumph in the Yacht Club Challenge. But despite the rivalries, members of both clubs –who have joined forces to help organize and host LBRW since 1980 – celebrated side by side along with races from up anddown the coast, on the pool deck of LBYC.

Lise Evaul, who has sailed in LBRW upwards of 25 years, echoed the sentiments of many sailors when she said,“LBRW is fantastic because as sailors, we have a lot of friends in ports near and far that we don’t get see day-to-day. Butyou know your sailing family will be here every year: everyone comes. And the racing is fantastic too. ABYC and LBYC racecommittees really care about the sailors and put together good, square courses and great competition, the kind of racingthe sailors have come to LBRW for.”.

The sunshine & temps were wonderful for the 1st summer weekend of the season. The Lido fleet hosted a Memorial Day “burger bash”...with all the trimmings. As seeing old friends & enjoying the

night breeze was worth the entry fee...the gathering around the ABYC Fire pit at dusk was “priceless”. Maybe the blueflame of the Fire pit is a bit “hypnotic”. We are all looking for the wind spirits to give us a private puff for Sunday’sraces...aren’t we?!

Our fleet leader Michael won the weekend races with a consistent set of top 3 finishes. We all just want to knowhow he kept his wide brim hat on (during all that time). With stronger winds, did he use duct-tape or super-glue to keep iton?

Congrats to all fleet winners. Next up is the 4th regatta which the ABYC Laser Fleet is hosting. Be sure to contactour Regatta Chairman, Rob Stropky and let him know how you want to help put on this fun regatta. The Fire pit will be thereif you need to warm up after a day on Patience, The Bay Barge or one of the mark-set boats in the ocean or Bay.

Rob Stropky writes: “Lessons learned for a new ocean racer”It takes a lot longer to get out at 11:00 in the morning than it does when going out to practice in the afternoon.

Especially when there’s a massive tide coming in. It took an hour from the club to the end of the jetty and I missed the firststart Saturday! I didn’t make that mistake twice. I left early and got my start on Sunday.

Hey, how about that Michael Kramer? Pretty impressive!

4th of July RegattaThe ABYC Laser Fleet is hosting the 4th of July Regatta the weekend of July 9-10. We look forward to seeing our

fleet members on race organizing duty, but we welcome any and all ABYC members and friends to join us and run theevent. Contact Regatta Chairman, Rob Stropky and let him know you want to help [email protected]

ABYC Sabotiers Make the Road Trip to Newport Beach. ABYC Senior Sabotiers made their presence known at the 2016 Sr. Sabot Nationals in Newport Beach. Balboa Yacht Club hosted this year’s Sr. Sabot Nationals with a good showing of around

35 Sabots. Nine boats participatedfrom ABYC. Thanks again to Fred Stevens for drivingdown the ABYC Sabot trailer full of boats. Racing tookplace in the turning basin of Newport Harbor and specialthanks are due Newport Harbor Yacht Club for lettingteam ABYC launch from NHYC which was much closerto the race track compared to BalboaYC.

Team ABYC was comprised of fleet Captain PaulAnctil, Cathy Black-Smith, the father and son teams ofJeff/Matt Mc Dermaid and Fred/Freddie Stevens, TomNewton, Mike Sentovich, and Kathy Weishampel.

Three races were held on both Saturday andSunday under June gloom conditions. Light and shiftywinds prevailed and many lead changes were seenduring the weekend series. Balboa YC did a great jobrunning the races amongst the weekend harbor traffic. On several occasions, large cruise boats meandered thru the race course creating havoc for the Sabots. ABYC wasafforded the special privilege of the “beer barge” (Todd and CB’s whaler) which provided cold drinks to thirsty Sabotiers.

Balboa YC hosted a lovely Saturday evening dinner partyoutside under sunny skies. This was a great time to rekindleold friendships with some of Southern California’s legendsincluding Jeff Lenhart, Chuck Sinks, Mark Gaudio, and NancyMellon who continues to amaze us sailing Sabots while nearing90 years young. We really need to get more ABYC veterans ofthe Sabot Class out at these regattas to continue the funtraditions of Sabot sailing.

There were four separate divisions including Masters,Seniors, Clydesdales, and Grand Masters. Fred Stevens raceda very consistent series to earn fourth place in Masters. OtherABYCers of note in Masters included previous MastersChampion Tom Newton in sixth and last year’s ABYC LadiesDay Champ Cathy Black-Smith in seventh. Matt McDermaidplaced fifth in the Senior’s fleet. In the Clydesdale fleet, all goodsporting streaks eventually come to an end. After winning theClydesdale trophy since its’ inception, ace Sabotier JeffMcDermaid posted a third and our beloved Clydesdale horse

trophy will gallop away to BYC until Jeff brings it backnext year.

Next year’s Sr. Sabot Nationals will be sailed inthe vacation mecca of Mission Bay. This will be an epicroad trip and we look forward to getting more ABYCSabotiers out on the water. Until then, check out the ABYCcalendar and start racing at our monthly Sr. Sabotierraces each month.

Thursday night twilights has been full of great racingaction. So far, we’ve experienced a variety ofconditions and have watched various teams excel

in certain conditions. It’s great to see so many racers on thecourse. For summer solstice party we had 22 Lidos evenlysplit fleet among As and Bs. Thank you race committee Jorge

Suarez, Jon Robinson and Elizabeth Schirmer. Afterwards Tori, Cole andArianna have been serving dinners to those who make reservations. We had39 people for twilight dinner around the fire pit. Mai tais were flowin’ and thebreeze was blowin’. Everyone is welcome to join us for dinner.Join in the fun

There are a few ways to join in the fun. Come and crew or volunteeron race committee. Or, charter the fleet boat for $30. And try out the racing. We have all levels of sailors racing so feel free to join the fun. Also, if youhave a boat in the yard that you’re not using, please consider partnering, selling or moving it out of the valuable space in the yard. We have a ratherlong wait list for folks anxious to use their boats, and they’d like to accesstheir boats from the yard.Sunday practice races continue July 17

The Sunday races are a little more relaxed and focused on practiceand fun. It’s a great way to get more racing in and try new things or new crew.Usually conditions offer a little lighter breeze than twilights which makes it alittle easier racing. The fleet members who attend are really loving this fun flare of racing. Join us!

ABYC and LBYC once again hosted Ullman Sails Long Beach Race Week and the 2016 Viper 640Pacific Coast Championship. We had 16 boats on the line over the weekend, a bit down this yeardue to work issues with several of the regulars. But we had beer, some breeze and some sunshine.

Friday’s skippers weather brief was talking about 14-18 kts at some point over the weekend, however Ithink their instruments need calibration. Friday we saw 5-8 kts max and we had lots of the famous Long

Beach Ganga (Kelp) floating around. The schedule is a 2-3-2 format over the three days with no throw-outs. Consistency pays and our goal was to

finish top 5 or higher in every race. By the time the debrief happened we were sitting with a 1,4 Jeff Grange from SantaBarbara had a 2,1 and Kevin Taugher had a 3,2 The debrief was very productive, the group managed to drain a barrel ofbeer and then we went off to the Rum Squall known as the Friday night party.

Saturday’s conditions were much the same, play the shifts and avoid the bigger boat traffic. We had a 4,1,8 by thetime to go in, Grange started to look very formidable with a 1,3,1 and Taugher pulled in front of us with a 2,2,2. Geoff Fargosailing his West Coast boat with a brand new mast pulled up tied on points with us with scores of 4,3,3,5,3 for Friday andSaturday and our plan was to just keep ahead of him.

Alas I was a bit off my game due to being over served on two consecutive nights and had some balance issues forsome reason, I kept falling on my backside all day and could not close the deal.

I want to congratulate Mr. Grange on winning the Pacific Coast Championships. He got to take the big plaqueaway from ABYC for the 1st time in 6 years!! He promised to bring it up for the 2017 meeting @ the Columbia River Gorge.

Final Top 5:1 Grange 11pts2 Taugher 17pts3 Fargo 25pts4 Carter 28pts5 Brownett 44pts

I also want to thank my team of Steve Bloemeke and Patricia Lapadula for hanging in there and mostly kept a smileon their faces… You don’t know what it means to me to have a fun, dedicated team for this old guy.

Blue failed to give Yellow mark room as required by rule 18.2(a). When it became clear that Blue was not giving markroom, Yellow avoided contact as required by rule 14 and passed outside the finish mark.

Yellow is allowed to take a post-race penalty under rule T2. but, under rule 44.1(b), not if despite taking a penalty, she gained a significant advantage in the race or series by her breach her penalty shall be to retire.

As Blue, even after taking her penaty, will gain an advantage in the race by her breach, the arbitrator should denythe post-race penalty request and tell Blue to retire. If Blue does not retire, the Arbitrator should send the protest to theprotest committee, who should disqualify Blue.
