July 2016 General Heating and Air Conditioning, Inc. | www.generalheating.com General Heating and Air Conditioning PROJECT UPDATES Elkhorn Schools - Elkhorn, WI Elkhorn School District had several schools that needed upgrades due to the district growing and the facilities being outdated. This project was a multi-phased, five school project to upgrade the space and increase the size of the schools. GHAC worked with the general contractor, CG Schmidt, on the upgrades. The first phase of the project was accomplished during the school year and consisted of gymnasium additions on Westside and Tibbetts Elementary schools, and small additions on the high school and Jackson Elementary Schools. Since school was in progress, storage space was at a premium and the safety of the students was constantly on the radar. The second phase of the project consisted of remodels to the first 4 schools as well as the middle school. These projects couldn’t start until school was out on June 13 and had to be completed before school began. Due to the compressed schedule, multiple crews were required to stay ahead of the work and finish all 5 schools at the same time. This was a typical school project which requires a substantial amount of work accomplished in a minimal time frame. Anticipating work load and having material ready to install on the second phase was critical and the foremen did a terrific job of this. Gray TV: New WMTV-NBC 15 building - Madison, WI Gray TV-WMTV is located at 615 Forward Drive just off the Beltline in Madison. Gray TV initiated this project because they chose to build a brand new WMTV building that is going for LEED certification. GHAC installed all the new HVAC system including the rooftop air handling units and hot water boilers. On the roof, a heavy grate secured between steel beams protects the air handling unit from falling ice that tends to drop from the large TV tower in the winter. This project was unique due to the amount of sound control that was placed around the HVAC equipment so as not to disturb filming inside the WMTV studio. by Paul Mayfield by Chuck Meoska

Safety Corner

The Dangers of Complacency by Mike Bales, Safety

3www.generalheating.com | General Heating and Air Conditioning

Complacency on the job injures and kills. And it spreads like a disease from one worker to another. One employee sees a co-worker taking a shortcut and figures, “If he doesn’t care, why should I?” We can’t afford to let complacency take over in our workplace. Utilize safety meetings and other training opportunities to get the message across that complacency is dangerous—as dangerous as any excavation, confined space, or other recognized workplace hazard. By re-dedicating your commitment to safety and awareness, you can create a safety culture that seeks out and eradicates complacency, replacing it with an emphasis on alertness, planning, hazard identification, problem solving, and accident prevention.

Many incidents occur because people are distracted and do not pay attention to their environment and what is going on around them. It’s easy for our managers and foreman to fall into the same trap- we become distracted by pressing

issues such as the organization’s need to increase productivity, improve quality, and raise profits. We focus on trying to change the one area we cannot control, which is time. With diverted efforts and the fact that we are reaching new safety milestones every week, it becomes easy to stop paying attention to the importance of safety in the organization and become blinded to the fact that the lack of attention to safety performance is injuring the organization in the long run. In other words, we become complacent.

There is no silver bullet answer to complacency. It takes awareness and vigilance to avoid the trap. Managers must renew their commitment to the safety process, and employees must get involved in safety activities. We did not reach our current level of excellence by sheer luck. Through our journey we have accomplished many amazing things, and I know we are destined for more!

I’m proud of all that you do, you should be too.

Elsy Galvan and husband welcomed baby boy, Harlen Kai Butler, on June 29.

Pie Contest by Brenda PerkovichHow many different pies are there? Lots! But at General Heating on June 2, we had 18 different pies including fruit pies and cream pies. Three judges were put to the sweet task of sampling them all. Donne Lalor’s chocolate peanut butter pie was declared the winner. Congratulations, Donne!

Although the grilled chicken lunch was free, we raised $421 for the United Way. The money was raised from a meat raffle of 10 different assorted meat prizes, our traditional ticket raffle, which had

prizes from tools to backyard games to picnic essentials, and the sale of pie slices.

Thanks for all those who attended. Hope you enjoyed the conversation, food, and had some fun with the puns.

Another event will be scheduled for this autumn when the United Way Campaign officially kicks off. If you have an idea for an event, please let me know.

Why did the pie go to a dentist? Because it needed a filling.
