Our Manifesto We are not just athletes. We are the ambassadors of an uprising —peaceful protesters in a rebellion against anyone who has a fear of difference. Our demands are equality, dignity and the recognition of our shared humanity. We will not stop or accept anything less. We are deserving. When we compete, we’re fighting for a more inclusive world. We are champions on the field and for this cause. Today, our world is more divided than ever, and coming together has never been more urgent. The revolution is inclusion, and it’s not optional. The only choice you need to make is how you will join it.

STATE BASKETBALL
F or the second consecutive
year, the State Basketball
Tournament and Cheer Com-
petition boasts the largest partici-
pant numbers for all events. In
fact, the 826 participating athletes
doubles the number from 2006.
Huge props to all of our amazing
volunteers, Dakota Wesleyan Uni-
versity, the City of Mitchell, organ-
izing committee chair Katie Knut-
son and the entire GOC for your
work on our 35th installment of
this event. It takes a great deal of
time and effort to pull a tourna-
ment of this size off and you did it
flawlessly. We appreciate you!

SPECIAL OLYMPICS SOUTH DAKOTA 5
I t was a milestone year for SOSD as we
celebrated our 50th State Summer
Games. Spearfish has been our host city
a number of times over the past 5 dec-
ades, including 9 times the past 16
Games.
Opening Ceremony was held on May 17
with competition following on May 18
and 19. These Games featured 632 par-
ticipants hailing from 26 delegations.
Medals were earned in the sports of Ath-
letics, Powerlifting, Soccer, Swimming
and Volleyball.
A huge “THANK YOU” to the community
of Spearfish and the 467 volunteers who
were the driving force behind the suc-
cess of these games. The hospitality
shown us and energy generated by each
and every one of you was awesome.
A special thanks to our Games co-
directors Myles Kennedy and Jhett
Albers. Your dedication and passion for
Special Olympics is unmatched and ap-
preciated.
Please join us next year as we kick off
the next 50 years on the campus of the
University of South Dakota in Vermillion.

cheer or lend a helping hand!
This Spring, the Law Enforcement Torch Run
again held Strikes for Special Olympics fund-
raising events to raise awareness and funds
for Special Olympics. Bowling parties were
conducted in Huron, Madison and Pierre.
These events were a huge success with 287
bowlers raising over 35,000 for Special Olym-
pics South Dakota and our local programs.
This Fall, we are hosting bowling fundraisers
in Watertown and Aberdeen and possibly
Rapid City, and Sioux Falls. Participants are
asked to pay or raise a minimum of $35 per
person and in return received food and drink,
a t-shirt, three games of bowling and shoe
rental. The event also included door prizes,
music, fun and prizes to the top scoring bow-
lers!
We are looking forward to bringing even
more Strikes for Special Olympics events to
various bowling alleys across the state of
South Dakota this winter and hope that eve-
ryone can join us for a bowlin’ good time!
If you are interested in setting up a Strikes
for Special Olympics in your town or would
like to participate, please contact the State
Office today!

regular professional football season.
We will be awarding prizes to the top
eight highest scores, as well as the lowest
score. Over $600 will be awarded each
week! to At the end of the 17 weeks, a
Grand Prize winner will be announced for
the individual who has the highest accu-
mulated score over the season. This win-
ner will receive $500.00.

LAW ENFORCEMENT TORCH RUN
2018 Torch Run
Thank you to everyone who came out to cheer on our amazing Law
Enforcement Torch Run “Core Runners” as they carried the Flame of
Hope across the state. Events were conducted in 30 different com-
munities raising awareness for Special Olympics South Dakota.
It was a long 4 days, but knowing we’d get to see all of you at our
stops kept us going until we finally reached the State Summer Games
in Spearfish and were able to light the caldron at the Opening Cere-
mony.
People always say “Thank You” to us for all we do for our athletes in
Special Olympics, but we want to say “Thank You” to all of our ath-
letes for what you do for us! You bring out everything that’s good in
this world! You give us back so much more than we deliver and we
don’t know what we’d do with out you!
Challenge Coins
As a way to commemorate both SOSD’s 50th Anniversary

As a Special Olympics family member, I pledge the following:
I will let my athlete choose the sports in
which he/she would like to participate. I will not force my choice upon him/her.
I will remember that athletes participate
to have fun and that the game is for them; not for the family members.
I will see to it that my athlete’s medical
form is up-to-date, complete, and on file.
I will learn the rules of the game and the
SOI policies before I complain or pro-test.
I (and my guests) will be a positive role
model for my athlete and encourage sportsmanship by showing respect and courtesy, and by demonstrating positive support for all athletes, coaches, offi-cials, and spectators at every game, practice, or competition.
I understand that I play a vital role in the
health and safety of my athlete’s partici-pation. I have a responsibility to assist Special Olympics in providing for the health and safety of all athletes by re-porting suspicious behavior, talking to my child about personal safety, drop-ping off and picking up my child/guard from Special Olympics events at the times designated by the organization (not excessively earlier or later than said established times), and any and all other reasonable measures to assist in the protection of Special Olympics athletes.
I (and my guests) will never engage in
any kind of unsportsmanlike conduct, such as booing and taunting, refusing to shake hands, or using profane language and gestures with any official, coach, or family member.
I will never encourage any behaviors or
practices that would endanger the health and well-being of the athletes.
I will teach my athlete to play by the
rules and to resolve conflicts without
resorting to hostility or violence.
I will demand that my athlete treat oth-
er athletes, coaches, officials, and spec-tators with respect, regardless of race, creed, color, sex, or ability.
I will teach my athlete that doing one’s
best is more important than winning, so that my athlete will never feel defeated by the outcome of a game or his/her performance.
I will praise my athlete for competing
fairly and trying hard, and I will make my athlete feel like a winner every time.
I will never ridicule or yell at my athlete
or other participants for making a mis-take or losing a competition.
I will emphasize skill development and
practices, and how they benefit my ath-lete over winning. I will also de-emphasize games and competition in lower age groups.
I will promote the emotional and physi-
cal well-being of the athletes ahead of any personal desire that I may have for my athlete to win.
I will respect the officials and their au-
thority during games and competition, and will never question, discuss, or con-front coaches during competitions. In-stead, I will take time to speak with coaches at an agreed upon time and place.
I will demand a sports environment for
my athlete that is free from drugs and alcohol, and I will refrain from their use at all sports events and competitions.
I will smoke/chew tobacco only in desig-
nated areas.
I will refrain from coaching my athlete or
other athletes during competitions and practices if I am not the assigned coach.
Thank you family members for your support of
Special Olympics South Dakota!
Special Olympics Family Member Code of Conduct
We hope as family members, you will embrace the spirit of Special Olympics and help to provide a competition and training environment that enhances athlete character and skill development. The following Family Code of Conduct should be emphasized during training, competition, and special events at any level – including sub-Program, Accredited Program, National, Regional and World.
Athlete Input Council
Since 2013, a dedicated and talented group of
Athlete leaders has been meeting three times
yearly to share ideas, concerns, make recom-
mendations and provide feedback on events
and competitions. Two members of the AIC also
serve on the SOSD Board of Directors.
Can and do these Athlete leaders influence de-
cisions made by our Board and State Staff? Most
definitely!

SPECIAL OLYMPICS SOUTH DAKOTA 11
BITS & PIECES
The first Wednesday of every March, Special
Olympics observes this day to encourage peo-
ple to pledge not to use the R-word. March 7,
2018 marked the 9th annual Spread the Word
to End the Word (STWTETW) event sponsored
by SOSD.
STWTETW is a campaign for mutual respect and
dignity that has spread across the United States
and around the globe, involving people of all
ages - from elementary schools to college cam-
puses and corporate offices. The goal of Spread
the Word to End the Word is for people to think
about the hurtful and disparaging uses of the
word “retarded” and pledge to stop using it.
In 2017, 104 schools displayed posters, hung
banners and distributed various pieces of mes-
saged swag to thousands of students across our
state. This past year 117 schools participated in
our STWTETW activities.
The impact of this program is illustrated
through these testimonials:
We started off our week with having school wide
lessons each morning in our start classes. Every
teacher in the building was teaching with the
Movies that Move videos and lesson plans. On
Wednesday we held our second End the R-Word
Rally. We ran out of seats and had to have par-
ents and guests stand along the walls in the
gym. We had around 60 students on the gym
floor during the entire assembly who helped plan
and assisted with activities. They all wore the
orange STWTETW shirts.
We had a former radio DJ volunteer to do audio,
sound effects and announcing. We gave 15 Uni-
fied Spartan awards for those who show kindness
and friendship to those of all abilities. Those
award recipients were
nominated by teach-
ers. Each grade level
competed in a free
throw shoot out to win
the Unified Spartan Cup.
The students on the
floor threw beach balls
into the crowd with
hurtful words written on
them and the students
in the crowd hit the balls
back. We called this "R-Word Knock-Out". Stu-
dents on the floor threw Spartan Pride shirts,
towels and STWTETW bracelets into the crowd.
News Center 1 and the Black Hills Pioneer both
did feature stories on our week.
We have had such positive feedback from parents
and people from the community that we are dis-
cussing taking our End the R-Word Rally on a tour
to all of our elementary schools next year.
-Casey Sumners - Spearfish Schools
One of our freshman students who has Down
Syndrome wrote and presented a speech to one
of our student groups. It gave a first-hand ac-
count to students about how the R-word makes
her feel. It was effective because many students
don’t think about how what they say affects peo-
ple with disabilities. We included the elementary
students this year, and we had a lot of great feed-
back from teachers about how their students
responded. We feel that by doing this campaign
every year, it’s helping to eliminate the use of the
R-word at Parkston!
-Carmen Bartells - Parkston Schools
We had such a great time at our R-word day.
While I think we have a ways to go to help stu-
dents understand how hurtful the R-word can be,
I think having our first ever event at the school
was a great place to start. We are already looking
forward to next year! Our Student Ambassadors
helped run the photo booth, hand posters, and
spread the word, which helped greatly!
-Brooke Teford - Rapid City Schools
We had two high school students with Down
Syndrome give a speech about the obstacles they
have overcome, activities they are involved in,
their future goals, and how the R-word makes
them feel. They did a great job and really made
the audience think about their choices of words!
-Nicole VanLeur - Bridgewater-Emery Schools
Do people really know the affects words have on
a person? In my opinion I believe people really do
not. This is my second year doing the Spread the
Word to End the Word campaign. There is always
one question I get asked: “why do I do this?” My
first reason is because I want to help spread
awareness about this campaign. I’m always sur-
prised by the number of people who still don’t
know what we are trying to accomplish. My final
reason I do this is because of my little sister Mia.
Mia is a bubbly, fun, sassy, and energetic little
girl, who has truly shaped me in to the person I
am. My little sister has Down syndrome. This syn-
drome causes developmental and intellectual
delays. I know for a fact that my little sister is
going to face many hardships in her life, and be-
cause of this, I want to be her voice. Mia is truly
amazing, and yes she may struggle with some-
things or some things she may be slower at, but
she can do it all. I honestly believe you will not
meet a more amazing person in your life. No mat-
ter how good or bad your day is, she will put a
smile on your face. And if someone would call her
retarded or dumb I would be very upset. You may
not realize this but words really do have an im-
pact on a person.
The point of this campaign is to ask people to be
more careful with the words they use because
they really can impact someone’s life. By doing
this campaign I hope to not only better my
knowledge on the effects of words but to edu-
cate others about respecting all people, even if
they are different!
-Sasha Cordell - Gettysburg HS Junior
Without the dedication and
expertise of these amazing volun-
teers, this important message would
not have reached almost 28,000
South Dakota students.
THANK YOU!

On January 18, 2019, Special Olympics South
Dakota and Northern State University will
host a Special Olympics Unified basketball
game against Augustana University .
The participants in this game will be North-
ern State students teamed with Special
Olympics athletes from Aberdeen VS Au-
gustana students teamed with Special Olym-
pics athletes from Sioux Falls.
Teams will compete during half time of both
the women’s and men’s basketball games.
Unified Sports is a program that combines an
equal number of unified partners (in this case
it will be university students without an intel-
lectual disability) and Special Olympics ath-
letes on a team where they are able to build
friendship, understanding, and inclusion. It
has been proven time and time again, that
sports unite people under the same common
goals and training together and playing to-
gether is a quick path to friendship and un-
derstanding. This event is designed to build a
strong relationship not only between the
students and Special Olympics athletes, but
also the broader community who will be in-
vited to watch the talents and abilities of all
that are involved.
