As spring has brought some
intense periods of rain, the
trail has experienced a few
washouts. One in particular
was located about half way
from the Village of
Dannemora to Hugh Herron
Road. Members of both
clubs worked together to
excavate the exposed
culvert, bury it deeper into
the ground, and backfill with
crushed stone. After that, the
ends were packed with large
stones to keep a future
washout from happening.
Finally, the excavator was
used to clean out several
hundred yards of drainage
ditch.
This will greatly aid the
movement of water along the
upslope side of the trail to the
appropriate crossing culvert.

drainage ditches have not

Three Grants Awarded
Rural Preservation Company

thrilled we have been
awarded three desperately-
needed grants! RPC was
awarded two grants for
Town of Saranac low-
income homeowner’s
rehabilitation work, a
Community Development

submitted an Access to

We encourage low-income
individuals to reach out to us
at 518-293-7569. If you need

Qualified Contractors
Needed
We are in dire need of
qualified contractors to
complete the rehab work,
accessibility improvement,
and emergency home repair
work.
Electricians are especially
needed, as we are having
issues completing emergency
home repair projects due to
the lack of available
contractors for this
specialized trade.
Hopefully, young adults can
see from this statement that
the work trades are very
needed in our area.
Local Senior Housing

largest in the state. Our
Assembly districts in
Northern New York are
among the biggest in the
state.
A Lot at Stake
Why do I bring this up? The
North Country is known as
the most under-counted
region in the state. It also
tends to under-report children
under four years of age.
I urge you to answer the
census. If we obtain a
complete and accurate count,
our political subdivision
boundaries may not get
larger; perhaps we will not
lose our Congressional
district. Possibly, our State
Representatives will not get
larger districts to serve.
Internet and Phone
Responses
You no longer have to fill out
a paper form. This year, you
will be able to complete your
census online, by phone, and
by mail. Everyone will have a
chance to respond to the
census the way they choose
to respond.
If the Census Bureau does not
receive a census report from
your address, they will send
someone to your home to
properly complete the census.
It is in our collective best
interest to have a complete
and accurate census.
Ultimately, the success of the
census depends on
everyone’s participation.

Town Board
Hello,
It has been a busy year.
Standish Water District
We are finally wrapping
up the Standish Water
upgrade. These projects are
very complex and take a lot
more time and effort than
any one can imagine.
EMS District
Standish is part of the Lyon
Mountain Fire District.
Starting January 1, 2020,
EMS will need to be paid
for by an EMS district. The
Town Board is working on
getting an EMS District in
place to fund EMS.
Salt Shed
We were awarded a grant
from DEC to build a salt
shed. The maximum
amount of grant is
$500,000.
To receive this maximum
amount, we are required
to match this sum. The
match can be in-kind
services and cash.
We have a signed contract
on the salt shed for the
Highway Department.
This is an important
project. As a society, we
are just now realizing how
the implication of salt
infiltration of our aquifers
is going to be a legacy
problem. We need the salt
to prevent the sand from
freezing, but it can ruin an
aquifer.
The State of New York is
constantly dealing with this
issue. The salt shed should
help us to protect our
aquifers.
Dashnaw Road Bridge
We also have a contract for
the Dashnaw Road Bridge.
This will be paid for by a
Bridge NY Grant from
DOT. Preliminary work is
being completed this year to
prepare for building it next
year. Test borings for both
projects have been
completed.
Census 2020
Every ten years, the U.S.
government counts every
person living in the country.
In the last month, I have had
the opportunity to attend two
presentations on Census
2020. There have been
several interesting points
made in these presentations.
Most people do not
understand the importance of
an accurate census. Funding
for many Federal and State
programs is determined by
population. Our political
representation is decided by
population.
However, as New York loses
population, we also lose seats
in political bodies, such as
Congress. We live in the
largest Congressional district
east of the Mississippi. Our
State Senate district is the

Dannemora Free Library
This summer, please consider
making a visit to the
Dannemora Free Library a
regular stop.
Summer Reading Program
Monday, July 8, at 11:30 will mark the opening of the
first session of the
Dannemora Free Library’s
2019 Summer Reading
Program. On successive
Mondays for six weeks –
July 15, 22, 29, August 5,
and 12 – those attending will
enjoy stories, presentations,
and activities structured
around the theme of “A
Universe of Stories.”
With the school year just
finished, summer reading and
summer experiences can
reinforce the skills and
confidence of the past
months. Let’s guess how
many books our summer
reading program participants
will complete this year!
Reduced Cost Passes
Also, if a visit to ECHO, Fort
Ticonderoga, or The Wild
Center is in your plans, you
might stop at the library to
borrow a reduced cost pass
for these spots.
Free Items
During a visit to the library,
readers should search through
the free basket to see if one of
the titles might be just what
they are looking for.
Storywalk
Behind the library, the
Storywalk’s first walk and
read of the season is in place,
On A Magical Do-Nothing
Day.
Coffee, Chocolate, and Chat
Plans are under way for the
fall-winter Coffee, Chocolate,
and Chat sessions. Do you
have a friend or neighbor
who might be willing to share
his/her knowledge, talent, or
experiences? Or do you wish
you could find out more
about something in our North
Country that you’ve only
heard of?
In either case, please visit,
call or email the library with
your suggestions or
questions.
Go-To Location
As our calendar pages turn
and we head toward the new
year, be reminded that 2020
is a census year.
Plans call for the census to be
conducted primarily on-line.
Thus, starting in March 2020,
libraries will undoubtedly be
a go-to location to complete
the on-line census
questionnaire.

The Court is open on Monday
evenings ONLY, excluding
holidays or any family
emergency that may
arise. There is always a sign
on the door advising of the
closure and scheduled return
date. In the case of bad
weather, it is best to not
venture out on the roads, so
please call and leave a
message and the Clerk will
call you back with a new
appearance date. If you have
an attorney, you MUST
contact him/her.
The Clerk is at court on
Monday's ONLY, beginning
at 2:00 pm, to collect fines
and provide general
information. Court begins at
5:00 pm unless you are
otherwise advised by the
Judge or Clerk. We have no
set closing time. After
everyone on our calendar has
appeared or contacted the
Court, we clear up our
paperwork and close for the
evening. It is best to come
early, rather than later.

Chakradance is self-healing
dance meditation. I am the
facilitator who narrates
through the dance to help
focus on the area and color of
the energy center we are
working on. You can watch a
little video on Facebook,
Danceintherainhealing. If
you cannot be on your feet
for a long time, you can sit in
a chair to do the dance.
Wednesday’s 3:45- 5:15 pm

$15 per class or 10 classes
for $135, a $15 savings.
Everyone age 8 and older is
welcome. If you are attending
class, please contact me at
least one day ahead of time
so I have the correct number
of handouts and equipment.
You may email me at

Inamojo is chakradance for
children under the age of 8.
Inamojo is a storytelling and
dance class which helps
children learn to self-regulate
and teaches them to wipe off
the dragon snot from their
day. It teaches them self-
acceptance and love, and how
to breathe through anxiety
and frustration. As an
Occupational Therapist, I
work with students everyday
who have difficulty changing
their thought-process to feel
better, and this is a technique
that works for these children.
Loving themselves and
learning to accept all the
flaws in ourselves and others
is a better way to live.
Monday’s 3:15-4:15 pm
Saranac Town Hall
$5 per child
Please Note: Both classes
only run while Saranac
School District is in session.
If there is a Snow Day, class
will be cancelled. I can add
you to a mailing list and you
can join my fb page to keep
up on the class schedule.

going and there is still time to
enter yourself or put in a
team!

Preserving Memories
Tips for Success
By Jan Couture
NYS Registered Historian
Share Photos
Thanks to Chad Robart,
there is a Facebook page
devoted to “Saranac Past”
where many people have
shared their precious photos.
Preserving the Past
Part of my position as Town
Historian is to promote
historic preservation.
How many times have you
found a water-damaged, torn,
or marked photo?
To preserve your photos, try
some of these ideas:
Use only acid-free or
archival-quality
supplies (purchased at
craft stores, Amazon,
Gaylord)
Use a marker, like a Flair
pen, or a pencil to very
lightly identify the
people, places, things,
and events
Store standing up, in
either acid-free
envelopes or separated
by acid-free paper, in
acid-free or archival
boxes
Do not pack too tight or
too loose
Store boxes at consistent
room temperature and
not resting on a floor
(attics and basements are
the worst places to store
photos)
When framing, use an
acid-free mat, making
sure photo does not
touch glass (glass should
have UV protection)
Even better, make a very
high-quality copy and
frame the copy however
you choose, storing the
original in the proper
manner
To store in a scrapbook
(acid-free or archival
quality, of course), use
those old-fashioned
corners (acid-free) and
slip the photo in the
corners
Scan photos and make a
photobook using
Shutterfly/Mixbook or
another online photo
book service
To remove photos glued
in an album, roll a
pencil, letter opener, or
kitchen knife under the
photo, wiggling it slowly
and carefully (if it begins
to get the slightest tear,
stop and cut around the
photo - store as listed
above -it is better glued
than torn)
Magnetic and self-
adhesive albums are one
of the worst ways to
store photos
The Cloud
ALWAYS REMEMBER to
scan a photo and store the
copy either in ‘the cloud’ or
on a USB thumb drive off
premises.
If the worst happens, your
photos will be safe - people
often say one of the first
things they would grab in an
emergency are their photos.
File Format
UPDATING is often
forgotten. As operating
systems change, so do the file
formats for photos.
You should update your
photo files every five years,
or when a major change
occurs on your computer.
Newspaper Articles
Some people enjoy cutting
newspaper articles and
keeping them. The earlier
suggestions also apply to
newspapers.
The main thing to remember
is to put a date on the cutout.
The story might say, ‘Last
Thursday’ and in ten years-
time no one is going to know
when that was.
Maps and Books
Maps can be treated the same
way as photographs.
Books need to be stored in
individual, acid-free
envelopes.
For more ways of preserving
the past, Google is a great
way to find sites to help you.
Feel free to contact me with
questions, concerns, or ideas.

Saranac Book Club
The Saranac Book Club starts our 21st meeting season at the Saranac High School
Library on Wednesday, September 18, 2019. We meet the third Wednesday of the
month, September 2019 through June 2020, from 7:00 - 9:00 pm, unless the school
is closed or we make other date changes.
We solicit new members to join our group to discuss a variety of new books as well
as the classics. Our September book choice to discuss is Shadows Walking, by
Douglas R. Skopp, a fictional novel about a Nazi doctor battling his conscience after
the war.
If you have any questions about the group or have a desire to join, please contact the
group facilitator, Gina Doty, at 518-293-1355 or email [email protected].
