SACRED HEART PARISH IS SEEKING A DIRECTOR OF MUSIC

Sacred Heart Catholic Church has an opening for a full-time Director of Music. The successful applicant will work as a vital part of the parish staff team to bring the parish vision of ‘Inviting Everyone to Passionately Live the Gospel’ to realization, specifically through the work of sacred music. Tasks include coordinating music to enhance the liturgical services of the parish, including selecting music, playing the organ and piano for liturgies, directing choirs, coordinating cantors and accompanists, and maintaining the pipe organ and piano. A full job description can be found at sacredheartaberdeen.net/employment-opportunities. Interested candidates are asked to send a copy of their resume and an accompanying cover letter to Fr. Mark Lichter, Pastor of Sacred Heart, at [email protected], or by mail to 502 2nd Ave SE Aberdeen, SD 57401.

Peace and Prayers this summer! We celebrate the 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time with readings that remind us of the importance of prayer and hospitality. In the Book of Genesis, three men are standing at the tent of Abraham. Visitors that are on a journey. Abraham attends to their every need and welcomes them into his home. Abraham prepares a meal for them and extends a heart warming hospitality. In some commentaries on this pas-sage they suggest that these three men represent the Trinity. Even though there is no understanding of the fullness of the Trinity in the Old Testament, it shows how the people we encounter are the presence of God. Abraham shows a great deal of reverence and respect for the visitors and treats them as if they are the face of God. This is a good model for us to follow in our homes and in our parish. Let us be welcoming and respectful to those who en-ter our doors. In the Gospel we read the Martha and Mary story of their encounter with Jesus. Martha is busy preparing the meal and making sure all is in order for their special guest. Mary on the other hand is sitting at the feet of Jesus listening to his every word. Martha begins to complain to Jesus that Mary should be helping with the prepara-tions. Jesus tells Martha to settle down and that she should not be so anxious about serving. This account shows us that there is a balance between prayer and service. In fact, Jesus tells Martha that Mary has chosen the better part. What does this mean? Are we not to serve and have hospitality to our guests? Do we just let things go and let the serving fall where it may? No, I would say that Jesus is giving us guidance in the proper ordering of prayer and service. Our service and hospitality need to be ordered in our relationship and prayer life with Jesus Christ. As we serve, is our service ordered in the way of Jesus Christ? Mary has chosen the better part, in the sense that all of our daily hospitality and service need to be rooted in Christ and our time sitting at the feet of Christ. We listen to Jesus to let go of any anxiety we may be experiencing in our daily service and to ask the hand of God to guide us. In this way, we serve with joy and energy which is given to us through Christ. I want to extend a hearty thank you again for your response to CFSA-2019. We have over $138,000 pledged, which I think is some kind of record! We have had 422 of our families respond which is 32% participation. We are still shooting for 100% participation and the amount over our goal of $118,500 stays with the parish and will be used for our stain glass windows. Can you imagine if we all participated to the level God has gifted us! God bless you and have a great week! Fr. Mark
