Good News Reflection 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time July 22, 2018

Finding energy to do what we're called to do Everyone in ministry feels overwhelmed by their calling from time to time. Whether it's the ministry of raising children, or caring for an elderly spouse or parent, or working a job in a way that reveals Christ, or volunteer-ing at a church or pastoring a parish, it's necessary to take time out for ourselves -- a vacation, a holiday -- for nourishment and rest and recuperation. Jesus says so in this Sunday's Gospel reading.
If we don't obey this commandment, we become cranky. We make selfish or poor decisions. We become like the evil shepherds of the first reading, who misled and scattered those whom they were called to serve. Why? Because we become vulnerable to temptations when we try to give what we do not have.
It takes energy to reveal God's love. It takes energy to remain enthusiastic in serving others. But how can we get recharged with new energy if we don't take time to sit still, rest, and pray? How can we care about others when we don't take good care of ourselves? Jesus lives within us, but before we can give him to others, we must first let him give himself to us.
Daily we encounter people who are like sheep without a shepherd; they are seeking Jesus whether they realize it or not. They want the unconditional love that he has to give. They want the healing and peace that he offers. He wants to help them, but if we who are his hands and feet and voice are too weak and worn out from our hardships, what then?
We need to go to a deserted place with Jesus and rest awhile in his nourishing love. If we go away on a retreat or vacation and come back to our work and ministries still cranky (i.e., if the people we shepherd wish we'd go take a longer trip), we haven't rested enough. We've cut short the restoration process. Never-mind the pile-up of work. Jesus is inviting us to "Come away by yourself and rest awhile longer with Me until you become more like Me."
Questions for Personal Reflection: What work of the Lord has become unhappy for you? What stole your joy? How can you get it back? (You might need a spiritual director to help you figure this out.) What needs of yours must be met before you can feel enthusiastic about ministry? What will you do this week to let Jesus meet these needs?
Questions for Community Faith Sharing: Why do people neglect to give themselves enough time for rest and restoration? What do you do to nourish (develop, strengthen, get more in touch with) the gifts, talents, healing, and insights that God gives you so that you can minister to others? What's been most helpful in restoring your Christian enthusiasm?
Encontrando la energía para hacer lo que estamos llamados a hacer Cada persona en un ministerio se siente, alguna vez, abrumado por su llamado. Se necesita energía para mostrar el amor de Dios. Se necesita energía para permanecer entusiastas al servir a los demás. Pero ¿cómo podemos ser recargados con nueva energía si no nos tomamos tiempo para permanecer quietos, descansar y orar? ¿Cómo podemos preocuparnos por otros cuando no nos ocupamos de nosotros mismos? Jesús vive dentro de nosotros, pero antes de darlo a los demás, debemos permitirle primero que él se dé a nosotros.
Diariamente nos encontramos con personas que son como ovejas sin pastor; están buscando a Jesús se den cuenta o no. Desean el amor incondicional que él tiene para darles. Desean la sanación y la paz que él ofrece. Él quiere ayudarlos, pero si nosotros que somos sus manos, pies y voz estamos demasiado débiles y cansados por nuestras preocupaciones, ¿entonces qué?
Necesitamos ir a un lugar desierto con Jesús y descansar un momento en su amor nutritivo. Si vamos a un retiro o vacaciones y regresamos a nuestro trabajo y ministerios aún enojados (es decir si las personas que pastoreamos quisieran que nos fuéramos a un viaje más largo), no hemos descansado lo suficiente. Hemos recortado el proceso de restauración. No importa la acumulación de trabajo. Jesús nos está invitando "Vengan y descansen un poco más conmigo hasta que se parezcan más a Mí."

The Source and Summit This article is from the Divine Worship Newsletter of the Archdiocese of Portland
Issue 10 July 2018 Chapter 1
The phrase Source and Summit is used frequently to describe the Holy Eucharist. It was first used in the document of the Second Vatican Council regarding the Church, Lumen Gentium it says “The Holy Eucha-rist, is the source and summit of the Christian life” (LG, 11). Since the Christian life is essentially a spiritual life, we might say as well that the Eucharist is the “source and summit of Christian spirituality” too.
To most Catholics, that proposition may seem obvious enough, even if they do not quite understand why. Intuitively, they know that the spiritual life means using every means available to grow closer to Christ. And they know that Christ Himself is present in the Eucharist in the most sublime manner. It makes sense, then, that the Eucharist should be central to the spiritual life of a Catholic.
But what the devout soul knows about the Eucharist intuitively should, where possible, become better known and more deeply experienced through systematic reflection on the Church’s Eucharistic doctrine. The better we understand the Eucharist's role in Christian spirituality, the better we will be able to love Christ present in the Eucharist. Regular teaching and preaching about the Holy Eucharist is thus strongly encouraged by the Church.
These two dimensions of the Eucharist, its being both the source and summit of Christian spirituality, reveal how the Eucharist, being Christ Himself, brings God and man together in a saving dialogue, a mutually giving and receiving relationship. In short, in a covenant of love. The Eucharist is at once the Father's gift of Himself in Christ to us and, through Christ, our offering of Christ and, with Him, of ourselves – our minds and hearts, our daily lives – to the Father.
Put in the traditional language of the Christian spirituality, we say that this communion with God is brought about by grace and lived out in the theological virtues of faith, hope and charity. Because the sacra-ments are instruments of grace and means of growth in the theological virtues, we can say that Christian spirituality entails what Pope St. John Paul II called a “sacramental style of life.” It involves using the sacra-ments to grow in the spiritual life. And because the greatest of sacraments is the Eucharist, Christian spiritual-ity is above all Eucharistic; coming from the Eucharist as its source and directed to it as its summit or zenith.

A small statue and a smaller photo icon will rotate among the parish families on a two week basis.

lies and other parishioners are encouraged to pray the rosary as a corporate body
every time a 5th Sunday occurs during in a month.
The next 5th Sunday Rosary services will be conducted on July 29th, September 30th,
December 30th.

Vacation Bible School begins on July 30. There are so many ways to be a part of this fun, faith-filled week:
1. Register your child (age 4 through 5th grade). VBS runs from 9-noon July 30 - August 3. There is no registration fee: that's right, it's FREE! You can register online through the church website, at the office, or on forms posted on the Faith Formation bulletin board in the church.
2. Volunteer to help out during the week. We need middle school, high school and adult volunteers. We are still looking for help all over, but especially in Bible Discovery.
3. Help provide snacks/supplies or donate funds to cover the costs associated with VBS. A wish list is posted in the church.

Family Opportunity Each month with a 5th Sunday, the Knights of Columbus hold a family rosary before each mass. The point of this is to encourage families to pray the rosary together.
If your family would be interested in leading the rosary on the weekend of July 28/29th, please contact any Knight who can forward the information to Stuart Conser. You do not have to be a member of the Knights of Columbus or Catholic Daughters. The rosary starts 10 minutes before mass and we only ask that you do a decade. To make it easy for the family, a script will be placed on the ambo for each mass.
Dad, this is a great way to lead your family to pray the rosary and to pray together.
Saints Anne and Joachim, parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary – Feast July 26 This year marks the 350th anniversary of the building of the original Church, which even-tually grew into a Basilica, dedicated to Saint Anne at de Beaupre, near Quebec City. Numerous miracles were attributed to the intercession of the Grandmother of Jesus over the centuries, which led to the growth of the Shrine. Over 1.5 million pilgrims visit there yearly to worship Jesus in the Holy Eucharist, join in the healing Blessed Sacrament procession, and ask Our Lady’s mother to pray for them. Saint Anne intercedes for us and our families.
