Can you sew, knit, crochet or cut squares?
You are needed!
Holy Family has had a Prayer Blanket Ministry for 10 + years. Their efforts have given many moments of comfort to those in need. We want to thank all of those who have helped over the years. Due to life circumstances, the number of members has declined and we are seeking some new members.
The only level of skill is the desire to help others. We create prayer scrappy quilts, afghans, prayer shawls and slippers for those that are struggling with physical and emotional challenges.
Currently, we meet at Holy Family on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month, from 12:00 - 3:00 p.m. It is not mandatory to come each time we meet, however it offers a time for supplies to be picked up, to learn new techniques, and to meet the ladies that are also working on the prayer blanket ministry.
If you are interested in joining or you have questions, please call Donna at 810-392-3106 or Catherine in Holy Family’s parish office at 810-392-2056.

Q. In your mail call last week you advised a couple to
talk to Fr. Joe, Fr. Sean or Dcn. Alan with regards to an annulment. Isn’t this just an unnecessary charade to provide a way for the Church to raise more money?
A. The annulment process can indeed come with
considerable costs. There are judges. There are advocates representing the interests of each party. There is a thorough investigative process, reviews and perhaps even appeals. The office personnel & equipment involved cost money too. However, the Church really has no choice in their position on the matter. In the Catholic Christian’s marriage bond we find an indissoluble covenant between the couple and God. Jesus made this quite clear: “But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife; and they two shall be one flesh: so then they are no more two, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.” And in the house his disciples asked him again of the same matter. And he said unto them, “Whosoever shall put away his wife, and marries another commits adultery against her. And if a woman shall put away her husband, and be married to another, she commits adultery.” (Mark 10:5-12) Since adultery is a mortal sin, the Church cannot take the matter lightly.
The question that the annulment process addresses is: did God indeed “join together” this couple in marriage? Was God involved in the process? Let’s exaggerate the point to make a point. We can use the example of two atheists being married before the local justice of the peace. How much consideration would we suppose was given to the marriage being a sacramental bond with the couple being joined together by the Creator Himself? Now, let’s imagine there is a subsequent divorce, followed by one of the parties wanting to be married in the Catholic Church. The annulment process would examine that first atheist marriage to determine the likelihood of any impediments to its being a sacramental marriage. This might be a simple quick process. As we touched on last week, less obvious, more subtle impediments to a Catholic marriage may be present. Again, this is what the process determines. It is also important to note that not all annulment applications are granted the annulment. As far as another way of raising more money for the church, the Archdiocese of Detroit absorbs the cost. Please send your questions to: [email protected].

Special Request for St. Augustine Festival Help with Children’s Games
The festival committee is in need of someone willing to help with the children's games. Our current chairperson will have everything organized, however, she is not able to oversee the games during the festival as she just welcomed a baby girl into their family. We need someone who is willing to oversee the games on Friday, Saturday and Sunday of the festival. It would involve setup, take down and overseeing the games.
If you are interested in helping out please contact Teri Manteuffel at 586-504-0020. We truly appreciate your help!
Festival Information & Volunteer Opportunities
Find detailed information about our St. Augustine Festival on the parish website at www.staugustinecatholicparish.org. There you will find a complete listing of our events, most of which still need volunteers. Check out the volunteer board at the back of church to see which areas still need help, and sign up for that event. If you have any questions, please contact our festival chair, Teri Manteuffel at 586-504-0020.
Festival Donations are needed in the following areas:
Flea Market Items - Now is the time to clean your attic and get your leftover garage sale items together and donate them to the St. Augustine 2015 Festival Flea Market. All items must be clean and in working order.
PLEASE: NO TV’s, computers, clothes, shoes, purses, or cloth items.
Donations may be brought to the front entrance of the school beginning the week of August 17th.
If you have any questions, please call Rosemary Smith at 810-543-0402. or Kathy Shpilia at 586-727-3666 Basket of Cheer - Thank you to those who have donated so far to our Festival Basket of Cheer! We could still use large baskets for our 2nd & 3rd prize baskets of cheer, as well as donations of new bottles of liquor, wine, mixers, beer, snacks, munchies, etc. Please drop off any donation at the St. Augustine Parish Office during business hours. Thank you for your help.
St. Augustine Festival Gift Basket Raffle
We are again having a booth for raffling gift baskets at the Parish Festival. We are looking for parishioners, their friends, and families to make up and donate “gift” baskets for the raffle. Please fill the baskets or a suitable type of container with new gift items of your choice. Be inventive - create a theme!
Empty baskets have been provided, if you need them, at the back of church, near the Main Street entrance, along with all necessary information, including suggestions and ideas for your basket.
All gift baskets must be returned to the Parish Office by August 7, 2015, so they may be organized and numbered. Contact Bridget Urquhart for any questions or concerns at 810-751-9157.
