“What then is a parish? It is the smallest section of the one universal flock which has been entrusted to Peter by the Lord.
Under the authority of a responsible priest who has received the care of souls from his
bishop, the parish is, within the Church of Jesus Christ, the first community of Christian life; it is a
community cut to human dimensions, in which the shepherd can know his flock and the flock can know
their shepherd … At the heart of this area, we find the parish church with its bell-tower, its baptistery, its
confessional, its altar and tabernacle, a symbol of unity and the centre of community life.”

THE COLLECTS OF THE ROMAN MISSAL: JULY 2nd, A.D. 2017
FEAST OF THE MOST PRECIOUS BLOOD
FFFFor this week's meditation on the Collects of the Roman Missal, we consider the Collect for the Feast of the Most Precious Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ (MR 1962), celebrated on July 1. Traditional Catholic devotion designates July as a month of special devotion to the Precious Blood. Below is the unofficial translation of the Collect provided in the Angelus Press edition of the Roman Catholic Daily Missal:
"Almighty everlasting God, Who didst appoint Thine only-begotten Son to be Redeemer of the world, and didst vouchsafe to be appeased by His Blood: grant, we beseech Thee, that by our solemn service, we may so venerate the Price of our redemption, and by its power be so defended from the evils of this present life on earth, that we may enjoy its fruit for evermore in heaven. Through the same our Lord, etc. Amen."
Broken down into its five-part structure, the Collect looks like this:
1. Almighty everlasting God (address) 2. Who didst appoint Thine only-begotten Son to be Redeemer of the world, and didst vouchsafe to be appeased by His Blood (dual ascription), 3. grant, we beseech Thee, that we may so venerate the Price of our redemption, and by its power be so defended from the evils of this present life on earth (dual petition), 4a. by our solemn service (motive for the petition), 4b. that we may enjoy its fruit for evermore in heaven (hoped-for outcome), 5. Through the same our Lord, etc. (concluding doxological formula).
Re-fashioned into a syllogism, we may interpret the Collect like this: A) If Christ shed His Precious Blood, that is, His
Life, for our salvation, B) And if we adore His Precious Blood in the
Eucharist, and continue to receive His divine Life in the grace of the Sacrament,
C) Then He will protect us from sin and temptation in this life, and enable us to enjoy his divine Life forever in heaven.
The worship of Christ's Precious Blood in the Church's liturgy must be understood against the Old Testament background of animal sacrifices for sins. In the Mosaic Law, God commanded man to worship Him by offering different kinds of animal sacrifices (which necessarily involved the shedding of blood). In Leviticus, we read the following: "For the life of the flesh is in the blood; and I have given it for you upon the altar to make atonement for your souls; for it is the blood that makes atonement, by reason of the life" (Lev. 17:11, RSV). For this reason, we have this statement in Hebrews, "Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins" (Heb. 9:22, RSV). Thus, the shedding of blood rather strongly and viscerally demonstrates that the animal died in the place of the sinner as a vicarious offering. God's justice was appeased, and the sinner was reconciled to God.
In the New Testament, Jesus Christ is clearly shown to be the Lamb of God, the one perfect atoning sacrifice for human sins (cf. Jn. 1:29, 1 Jn. 2:1-2). Unlike the animal sacrifices of old, which were merely a type, Jesus' death actually pays the price of man's sin-debt, reconciling sinners to the Father (cf. Heb. 9:11-15, 24-26, 10:1-14). Furthermore, because He is risen from the dead, Jesus' death on the cross, His one sacrifice on Calvary, has eternal efficacy before the Father. As High Priest, Jesus "lives to make intercession" for us (cf. Heb. 4:16, 7:15-16, 24-27). All of this is the heart of Jesus' Ascension into heaven and its consequences for the Liturgy (cf. Catechism of the Catholic Church nos. 659-667, 1070, 1073, 1085; cf. Jean Corbon, The Wellspring of Worship). His Precious Blood continues to be an eternal offering to the Father, with whom He lives and reigns in the unity of the Holy Spirit. The above-mentioned words in Leviticus now take on thrilling significance- the Life is in the Blood indeed!

My enemies that trouble me have themselves been weakened and have fallen. Psalm 26: 3 If armies in camp should stand together against me, my heart shall not fear. V. Glory be to the Father.
COLLECT Grant, we beseech Thee, O Lord, that the course of this world may be so peaceably ordered by Thee, that Thy Church may joyfully serve Thee in quiet devotion. Through our Lord.
EPISTLE: Romans 8: 18-23 Brethren, I reckon that the sufferings of this time are not worthy to be compared with the glory to come, that shall be revealed in us. For the expectation of the creature waiteth for the revelation of the sons of God. For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him that made it subject in hope; because the creature also itself shall be delivered from the servitude of corruption, into the liberty of the glory of the children of God. For we know that every creature groaneth, and travaileth in pain, even till now; and not only it, but ourselves also, who have the first-fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption of the sons of God, the redemption of our body; in Christ Jesus our Lord.
GRADUAL: Psalm 78: 9, 10 Forgive us our sins, O Lord, lest the Gentiles should at any time say: Where is their God? V. Help us, O God, our Saviour; and for the honour of Thy name, O Lord, deliver us. ALLELUIA: Psalm 9: 5, 10 Alleluia, alleluia. V. O God, who sittest upon the throne, and judgest justice, be Thou the refuge of the poor in tribulation. Alleluia.
GOSPEL: Luke 5: 1-11 AAAAt that time, when the multitudes pressed upon Jesus to hear the word of God, He stood by the lake of Genesareth. And He saw two ships standing by the lake; but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets; and going up into one of the ships that was Simon’s, He desired him to draw back a little from the land: and sitting He taught the multitudes out of the ship. Now when He had ceased to speak, He said to Simon: Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught. And Simon, answering, said to Him: Master, we have laboured all the night, and have taken nothing, but at Thy word I will let down the net. And when they had done this, they enclosed a very great multitude of fishes; and their net broke: and they beckoned to their partners that were in the other ship, that they should come and help them; and they came, and filled both the ships, so that they were almost sinking. Which when Simon Peter saw, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying: Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord. For he was wholly astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of fishes which they had taken: and so were also James and John the sons of Zebedee, who were Simon’s partners. And Jesus saith to Simon: Fear not, from henceforth thou shalt catch men. And having brought their ships to land, leaving all things they followed him.
OFFERTORY: Psalm 12: 4-5 Enlighten my eyes, that I never sleep in death; lest at any time my enemy say: I have prevailed against him.
Preface of the Holy Trinity
SECRET We beseech Thee, O Lord, be pleased to accept these our offerings; and in Thy mercy draw even our rebellious wills unto Thee. Through our Lord.
COMMUNION The Lord is my firmament, and my refuge, and my deliverer, my God is my helper.
POSTCOMMUNION May the mysteries which we have received, O Lord, purify our hearts, and by their power may we be defended. Through our Lord.
