Prelude Chiming of the Hour Welcome

Introit

How beautiful the morning and the day; my heart abounds with music, My lips can only say: How beautiful the morning and the day.

*Call to Worship

The glory of God is beyond finite understanding. The majesty of God fills the earth and all that lies beyond it. Who are we, small as we are, that God should care for us? Yet God’s constant care for all of creation is unending. Let us worship Almighty God!

*Hymn 409 God Is Here!

*Call to Confession

*Prayer of Confession

Creator God, it is a wonder that you continue to care for us, even though we re-peatedly abuse this planet and its resources. You are steadfast in your love for us, even though we continually fall short of showing your love to our neighbors. You are unending in your mercy toward us, even though we consistently demon-strate a lack of compassion to the needs around us. Forgive us, O God. Help us amend our ways, so that we may live holy, just, and humble lives to the glory of your name; through Christ our Lord we pray.

(time for silent confession) And let God’s people say: Amen.

*Affirmation of Faith (adapted by members of FPC)

We believe in God, the Father Almighty, and in Jesus Christ, His Son, our Lord, and in the Holy Spirit. We seek to know God's will, to walk in God's ways, and to proclaim the Gospel to all people, by our lives as well as by our words. We work and pray for the progress of knowledge, the promotion of justice, the reign of peace, and the realization of human unity in our time. And we look with faith for the triumph of righteousness in our community and in our world. Amen.

Call to Prayer (hymn 470)

There is a longing in our hearts, O Lord, for you to reveal yourself to us. There is a longing in our hearts for love we only find in you, our God.

Prayers of the People - with The Lord’s Prayer (ecumenical version)

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

WORSHIP NOTES

Today, Sharon begins sermon series entitled,

“Five Essential Questions in Life.” The series is

inspired by James Ryan’s commencement address

to the 2016 graduating class from Harvard’s

Graduate School of Education. The series runs

through the month of July.

Our prelude, offertory, and postlude music are

from American composers. William Selby (1738–

1798) was an early American composer, organist

and choirmaster. Born in England, he emigrated to

Boston, Massachusetts. Robert Powell was born in

Beloit, MS, in 1932. He has held positions as or-

ganist and choirmaster at The Episcopal Cathedral

of Saint John the Divine (New York City), St.

Paul's School (Concord, NH), and Christ Church

(Episcopal) of Greenville, SC. He has composed

in nearly all genres common to church music, in-

cluding anthems, service music, hymn concerta-

tos, organ music, music for handbell choir, and

large-scale oratorios.

A Harvard study showed that

giving is contagious. It found

that acts of altruism can spread

by three degrees - from person

to person to person. That means

one generous act from you can influence

dozens or even hundreds of people.
