Historical Background

About the Conference

Electron Microscope Society of India was inaugurated on 2nd December 1961 at Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics as a collective effort of several scientists led by

Prof. N. N. Das Gupta and Dr. (Mrs.) S. M. Sirsat. The first conference of EMSI was held on December 2 – 3, 1961, where Dr. N. N. Das Gupta was elected the first President of the Society. The foundation membership of the society consisted of about 50 members engaged in electron microscopy work in about 15 laboratories in India. The society since then has gradually gained strength and has attained its present status, having members from diverse disciplines like Materials Science, Metallurgy, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Medicine, Forensics, Agriculture and Geology. It has members from different parts of India and conscious efforts are being made to ensure that this geographical and disciplinary diversity is maintained. EMSI holds its conferences every year at different parts of the country with representation from the entire globe. The society is affiliated with the International Federation of Electron Microscope Societies (now renamed as IFSM) ever since 1962 and was, in fact, its 15th member at that time.

The XXXIV Annual Meeting of the Electron Microscopy Society of India will be jointly organized by the Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics, Kolkata and the East Zone Chapter of EMSI during July 3 – 5, 2013 at Kolkata, India. A large number of eminent researchers and microscopists across the world are expected to attend this conference. The event offers an excellent opportunity for networking with experts in the field, gain exposure to a variety of characterization techniques, and keep abreast of the latest advancements in micro- and nano- scale characterization. In addition to invited talks, poster sessions, electron micrograph contest and tutorial sessions on latest developments in electron microscopy, the conference will include plenary talks by leading experts in the field. In order to offer a

diverse menu, the conference has been planned to have a structured organization where stalwarts from various fields of electron microscopy will present their work.

The international conference covers a wide range of subjects with strong emphasis on the possible applications of electron microscopy and allied techniques in the area of Nano-materials, Physical Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Biological & Medical Sciences, Metallurgy, Mining, Biotechnology, Forensic Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Agriculture, Food Technology and Nuclear Engineering. Technical research contributions using SEM, TEM, STM, and allied techniques are invited for this.

Technical Exhibition

thLast Date for Abstract Submission : 30 April 2013th Abstract Acceptance Notification : 10 May 2013thEarly Registration : 15 May 2013

An electron micrograph contest will be organized as part of

EMSI 2013 featuring B&W or colour micrographs depicting

microstructures obtained using Transmission Electron

Microscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy and any other

advanced microscopy based technique. Participants need not

be members of EMSI. However, those intending to participate

must ensure that at least one of the authors registers as a

delegate in the conference. The primary goal of the contest is

to advance the science of microstructure analysis by

providing an opportunity for microstructure analysts to

display their work. There will be four awards, two in materials

science and two in life sciences.

Note: No optical micrographs would be entertained.

A technical exhibition for displaying various technologies and

products of interest to the electron microscopy community

will be held on the sidelines of EMSI2013. There would be a

special time slot allocated specifically for visiting the stalls.

The conference would provide an opportunity to showcase

the company products.

Traditionally, a large number of participants from India and

abroad attend the conference and witness the products

displayed in the exhibition. This exhibition will remain open

throughout the period from July 3 – 5, 2013 and during this

time period there would be specific session for participants to

meet the company personnel. The companies will benefit

from the presence of several national and international

experts at the venue. Those intending to participate in the

exhibition may kindly register online through the website or

fill up the registration form (to be downloaded from the

website) and send it to the contact person.
