July 3, 2016 On July 2,1776, the Continental Congress voted in favor of the resolution calling for independence from England. On that day, John Adams wrote to his wife Abigail that July 2, “will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival” and that the celebration should include “Pomp and Parade…Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other.” On July 4 th , the Congress formally adopted the Declaration of Independence. Though the vote for actual independence took place on July 2 nd , from then on the 4 th became the day that was celebrated as the birth of American independence. This weekend many people will celebrate the holiday with barbecues, swim parties, camping, boating, etc. As we remember the founding of our great nation we should take time to give thanks to God for our freedom. One of the most fundamental freedoms is the freedom to practice our Holy Catholic faith. Catholics were not at all welcome in the early years of our nation, and were often ridiculed and persecuted. Over the last two hundred plus years we have proven ourselves to be good, faithful citizens. We did this by building schools, hospitals, orphanages and giving immigrants a place to practice their faith. We are part of that great heritage, here in Mid-Missouri, thanks to the hard work and dedication of Fr. Ferdinand Helias. Let us pray for our nation: Almighty God, We come to honor you this day. We come to acknowledge that you are the only one who can rightly lead and guide our country. Lord, we lift up prayer for our country. We ask that you would bless our country with your wisdom, your love, and your compassion. May we be a people who are pursuing you and your plans for us - individually and corporately. Amen Fr.
