July / August 2012 Summer Song Pastor Ron de Groot A small wooden flute, An empty , hollow reed, Rests in her silent hand. It awaits the breath Of one who creates song Through its open form. My often-empty life Rests in the hand of God; Like the hollowed flute, It yearns for the melody Which only Breath can give. The small wooden flute and I, We need the one who breathes, We await the one who makes melody. And the one whose touch creates, Awaits our empty, ordinary forms, So that the song-starved world May be fed with golden melodies. - Joyce Rupp The songs of Summer have always invited us to relax our hectic pace of life. It seems as if Summer invites those last stragglers of Spring to come out and play! The message of the Gospel is just such an invi- tation. Calling us out of the darkness of our long winter into the warmth and breezes of Summer. It is an invitation to let go of the to do list and simply enjoy the moment. Children instinctively know how to do this and that is probably why it is such a struggle to hold their attention at the end of the school year. Perhaps our Summers are invitations to be- come the instruments of which Joyce Rupp writes. The songs of summer are calling us to allow the breath of God to move through our small wooden flutes. We can make music with our laughter, wonder, lingering evenings on the porch, splashing in the water and tending our gardens with gratitude and joy. Blessings on God’s Summer song through all of you!

July / August 2012 Summer Song –Pastor Ron de Groot

A small wooden flute,

An empty , hollow reed,

Rests in her silent hand.

It awaits the breath

Of one who creates song

Through its open form.

My often-empty life

Rests in the hand of God;

Like the hollowed flute,

It yearns for the melody

Which only Breath can give.

The small wooden flute and I,

We need the one who breathes,

We await the one who makes melody.

And the one whose touch creates,

Awaits our empty, ordinary forms,

So that the song-starved world

May be fed with golden melodies.

- Joyce Rupp

The songs of Summer have always invited us

to relax our hectic pace of life. It seems as if

Summer invites those last stragglers of Spring

to come out and play!

The message of the Gospel is just such an invi-

tation. Calling us out of the darkness of our

long winter into the warmth and breezes of

Summer. It is an invitation to let go of the to

do list and simply enjoy the moment.

Children instinctively know how to do this and

that is probably why it is such a struggle to

hold their attention at the end of the school

year.

Perhaps our Summers are invitations to be-

come the instruments of which Joyce Rupp

writes.

The songs of summer are calling us to allow

the breath of God to move through our small

wooden flutes. We can make music with our

laughter, wonder, lingering evenings on the

porch, splashing in the water and tending our

gardens with gratitude and joy.

Blessings on God’s Summer song through all

of you!

Thank you 2011-2012 season – Paul

Budd

Time flies when you are having fun! I

don’t know where that aphorism comes

from but it certainly applied to this past

season for the Music Ministry of this

church. It doesn’t seem possible that it is

summer already; wasn’t the choir, just last

Thursday, rehearsing for the community

Christmas Concert? What about the com-

munity Thanksgiving Service? Jazz Sun-

day doesn’t seem that long ago! And was-

n’t Easter just last Sunday?

And what about Calvary Bell Choir? Was-

n’t it just last Thursday that we were swel-

tering/freezing in our rehearsal space? Jug-

gling schedules to be able to play every

Sunday in Advent, learning new music,

putting up with the director’s new ideas

and musical arrangements; good times!

By making ourselves available for service,

God was able to work through us to bless

the congregation this past season. I am

grateful to all the members of the choirs for

their cooperation and good cheer as we met

each week to prepare our offerings to the

Lord. Have a wonderful summer and I

look forward to seeing each one of you in

the fall as we renew our commitment to

God, to each

other and to

the church.
