Dear fellow Members,

Summer is finally in full bloom at Greystone. I hope everyone is enjoying the club and all of the activities we offer. Creating memories for ourselves and our children is what Greystone

Golf & Country Club is all about.

In just the last couple of months, we have had some great activities, including our ever popular men’s golf Member-Guest, which was executed flawlessly, as usual, by our staff. Our Match Play Championship was a great event with the new format, and we look forward to that growing through the years. The Greystone Invitational has just concluded with one of the strongest fields we have ever had with top amateurs from around the U.S. and multiple countries throughout the world. There are many upcoming events, too numerous to list here, but you will find them throughout this newsletter. Pick your favorite activity and come join us.

Speaking of upcoming events, the planning and preparation is going well for our upcoming building and golf course renovation project. We are on target for a July 7th start date with the golf course renovations and shortly thereafter, the new golf operations building & plaza groundbreaking. Any time there is remodeling, there is always some inconvenience with it. We will do our best as a club to limit any inconvenience to our members and their guests.

We have created a brochure titled “85 days on the Path of Excellence,” which will give you all the information on the timelines and what facilities will be opened and closed starting July 7th. This should be your go-to guide during this renovation. Remember, we are building a better Greystone for the future.

Greystone continues to add new families to our membership at a steady pace. Please help make these new members and their family welcome by reaching out and including them in any of the activities you are involved in. In addition, this is a great time to become a new member of Greystone, and if you know of any potential members, please contact Membership Director Ashley Fuentes, [email protected] or (205) 986-5146.

Once again, thank you for all of your support and understanding over the next few months during the renovation of our golf course and upgrading our facilities for the future.

As always, I look forward to seeing you at the club.

Dear Members,

The 85 Days on the Path of Excellence begins! After a great spring with exciting news of the Champions Tour returning to Greystone

in 2016, 2017, and 2018, and the unprecedented 96% approval to move forward with the strategic plan, we are gearing up for the golf course renovation at Founders along with the construction of the Golf Operations Building, and the other exciting upcoming projects.

The 85 days begins on July 7, 2014 when the Champions Tour construction team arrives to begin work on the Founders Golf Course. The scope of the work includes renovating at least nine greens to provide additional hole placements, completely renovating the bunkers, and installing a pipe on number 5. The timeline to complete these projects should be approximately 85 days.

Hopefully, in mid-July, we will receive the necessary permitting to begin the Golf Operations Building & Plaza and then begin construction. This new building will house the golf carts, laundry, clubhouse maintenance, and storage. This integral project should be completed by April 2015. When the Golf Operations Building is completed, we will begin creating the enhanced fitness facility, casual dining room, childcare center, and ladies’ locker room to the lower level of the Founders Clubhouse.

In mid-July of this year, we will begin construction on the Golf Performance Center at Legacy. This project will include three teaching bays that will alleviate our teaching facilities. This project should be completed by January 2015. Please refer to the 85 Days on the Path of Excellence brochure for detailed information about the projects, the operational changes, and the timelines.

SAFETY Since the summer has begun, we have had several near accidents in the parking lots and on the cart paths with children on skate boards. The Club prohibits skateboards in the parking lots and on the cart paths. Also, I encourage all members to reduce your speed while driving in the parking lots.

I wish you and your family a happy and safe summer!

See you at the Stone!

Dear Members,

Wow, it sure is evident that times are changing! From the physicality of PGA Tour players to golf course agronomic practices, the modifications

to the game are constant. You only need to look back to this year’s U.S. Open at Pinehurst and the change of the golf course to a more natural (less water and fertilizers) look with unkempt areas. The comments ranged from “I loved it” to “I thought they ruined the course.” Regardless of your opinion, one thing rings true and that is, if you’re not moving forward your moving backward.

Here at the Stone we like to think we’re moving forward, constantly trying to give you the most enjoyable golf experience possible. I’m glad to report that in May we experienced the highest volume of golf rounds in the history of the Club. May is typically the most active month of year. With the changes being made to the Founders Course by the Champions Tour and the upcoming building projects, Greystone continues to flourish.

Some new additions at Greystone are the handicap computers that the GMGA purchased for each golf shop. This will enhance the golf experience in a small but positive way. In keeping with the handicap theme and keeping everyone in the know, the Golf Committee has approved the posting of names of those playing in handicapped events that have missing scores in their posting history. This will help to notify everyone of the need to keep a closer eye on their scores.

Trade–ins As I talk to folks from time to time, people are always amazed to know we take TRADE-INS. We actually started 10 years ago and have amassed over $100,000 in trade-in value for our members. We sell their clubs and give 100% of the net value credit back to them to offset purchases from the golf shop. If you have some not too old clubs, let us try to turn them into new clubs or a gift certificate to use in our golf shop.

Fivesomes reminder - It has been a while, but just to keep everyone sharp on the rules of fivesomes, we do allow five players in a group with the following stipulations:

Requests only made through the golf shop at the time of play We do not allow fivesome tee times to be made in advance If your group falls behind, you will be asked to split into two groups Requests can be denied based upon the course being too busy, or the golfers too slow

Enjoy your summer on the links!

Hello Members,

Hopefully y’all are enjoying a fantastic summer.

Blackburn Golf at Greystone is excited about the success of our coaching programs and summer camps which continue to grow in numbers each month. Brian, Mason, Darrell, and the instructional team are doing a fan-

tastic job of making learning fun for everyone! We encourage you to come join us to experience the benefits of a relaxed and informal learning environment.

The Men’s Biggest Loser club and Junior Performance programs continue to prove very popular with a variety of skill levels in each session. We always have room for more students so please come join us if you want to play better golf now! We would like to see some more women in our Ladies Boot Camp which offers incredible instruction in a social and entertaining setting. Mason, Brian, and Darrell continue to stay busy with their individual lessons and I encourage you to call them or me for help with your game should you prefer the individual lesson approach to improv-ing your game.

Perhaps the most exciting addition to the instructional programs is the introduction of AimPoint Express green reading. While we have had AimPoint Mid Point classes, Express is a whole new world for the student! The class is designed to show you how to get a reliable read with minimum training and practice. It’s the perfect balance of simplicity and accuracy by giving a dependable read. You may have seen this technique from world #1 Adam Scott, ladies #1 Stacy Lewis and a growing number touring of professionals all looking to gain an edge and make more putts. We will be offering AimPoint Express clinics to members twice a month in July and August and by request if you have a group of four or more for a private session. This is a fantastic way to lower your scores with minimal investment of your time!

AimPoint Express Clinic • Saturday, July 19th • 10am-12pm & 2pm-4pm Members Only from 10am-12pm | Members & Public from 2pm-4pm

AimPoint Express Clinic • Thursday, July 31st • 2pm-4pm, Members & Public

AimPoint Express Clinic • Saturday, August 9th • 10am-12pm & 2pm-4pm Members Only from 10am-12pm | Members & Public from 2pm-4pm

AimPoint Express Clinic • Thursday, August 14th • 2pm-4pm, Members & Public

The Golf Teaching Facility plans are coming along nicely and the renderings look fantastic. Keep an eye out for them at both the Founders and Legacy clubhouses soon. We are excited to become a truly state of the art teaching center begin-ning winter 2014/15. If you need help or have questions about your game, please contact the Blackburn Golf staff ASAP.

Best wishes,

Dear Members,

How Important is Wedge and Putter Fitting?

In the four years the TaylorMade Lab has been open, we often find ourselves wondering why so many players put so little

emphasis on custom fitting their wedges and putter. These components of the set are far less expensive to purchase than a driver or set of irons, yet their impact on your game is indisputable, which makes them the most valuable pieces of equipment in the bag. If you statistically analyzed the rounds you played, you would find that anywhere between 40% - 60% are taken with your wedges and putter. Clearly, these are the clubs that need to perform the most consistently and accurately to impact your scoring. Unfortunately, most players do not realize how seemingly minor characteristics of these clubs impact how the player uses them.

Let’s begin with wedge fitting. Did you know that a 1 degree variation from standard in Lie Angle (the angle formed by the bottom of the sole of the club and the shaft when the club is resting on the ground) results in a 20 foot variation relative to the target line given all other impact conditions are the same? Also consider that most players dig the heel or toe of the club at impact in the range of 2 degrees to 4 degrees. This results in shots that fly 30-50 feet left or right of where the player is aimed. The result is that the player makes adjustments to their alignment or mechanics to compensate for this error. The long term effect is inconsistent contact and flawed mechanics that are compensating to the club, instead of the other way around. This is not to mention that most players really aren’t truly aware of the distance they hit each wedge. Some of the customizable aspects of wedge design include: loft, lie, length of shaft, sole grind, flex and weight of shaft, swing weight, offset, leading edge camber and bounce. We have yet to see a single player, regardless of handicap, that isn’t effected in some way by changing some or all of these aspects. Clearly, the only way to maximize your scoring ability is to have a set of wedges that consistently goes the correct distance and flies straight to the intended target, and also plays well from around the greens.

Now let’s consider putter fitting. This is DEFINITELY the most important club in the bag to fit properly, because the tolerable margins of error that allow us to still hole putts are so miniscule. Consider this – The maximum allowable face angle variation from the target to still make the putt from 12 feet is o.8 degrees. Keep in mind that most players start out aiming their putter in the range of 2-3 degrees offline. This is due to the player’s optics and the optical features on the putter. A player’s optics are determined by the club’s offset, the color of the clubhead, the type of sight aids used (lined putters vs. non-lined), as well as the player’s visual acuity, eye dominance, depth perception and address position. These are all aspects that are considered when fitting a player for a putter. In addition to the putter design features mentioned above, a putter also must be fit for face weighting (the most important aspect of putter design), length, lie, weight, swing weight, and head stability.

Our ultimate goal in the Lab is to make players better, which means better scoring. Unfortunately, if the player does not consider the importance of having custom fit wedges and putters, they will not see and improvement to their scoring even though their custom fit driver and irons help them to hit the ball much better. So PLEASE, consider having your wedges and putter fit properly if you are hoping to lower your handicap. You will spend less money on custom fit wedges and putters than any other piece of equipment, and see the biggest impact on your scoring.

If you would like to schedule a wedge or putter fitting, please call or email the TaylorMade Lab.

Are you looking to improve your golf game? If so, your next step should be a screening analysis of how your body moves. This screen can determine both your tight and weak areas. Knowing how and why your body moves is the key to helping you improve.

Our Junior programs are in full force. It’s not too late to participate in one of our morning beginner or intermediate classes. Please contact the pro shop to sign up at 986-5154.

Fall Softcourt will be here before you know it and we have a signup sheet in the pro shop. If you have never played on a team, we invite you to join us this fall and get involved in adult league tennis.

Thanks to all of our Greystone juniors who participated in the Hoover Toyota Open, making the tournament a huge success! Once again, we had a strong showing from juniors in our programs. We would like to thank the Stewart family and Hoover Toyota for all that they do to make this tournament Alabama's finest each year! Special thanks to Dr. James Sanderson and SanDentistry for their sponsorship, and the Getsingers and Subway for their sponsorship. This year's tournament featured tie-dye t-shirts, Hoover Toyota Nike caps for all players, a pizza and pool party with prize raffle, and ping pong battles all weekend! We would also like to thank all of our juniors who participated and represented Greystone well! Click here for the third annual Hoover Toyota Open photo album.

Wow, it is really getting hot on the courts! This summer we will be top-dressing (adding clay to) many of our courts. Each court we top-dress will take approximately a week to bond after application and cannot be played on. However, the finished product is more than worth it! Thank you for your patience.

Congratulations to Connor Coleman, Boys 14’s Champion!
