Chamber Perks 30

A s the chair of the Chamber’s Board of Directors, I’m often asked “What exactly does the Chamber do?” That’s a

good question and one I’ll try to answer from my point of view.

I believe the most important role of the Chamber is as a convener of dialogue. Simply stated, the Chamber keeps the discussion and momentum going to address a need in the community. For example, the MDU Resources Community Bowl started out as a simple conversation on the need to repave the track. Repairing the track was deemed necessary if Bismarck was to retain the state track meet, which is important to our hospitality and retail members. The Chamber was asked to bring together interested parties, gather input and ideas and work with the private sector to raise funds for the needed improvements. The result is the

MDU Resources Community Bowl that will celebrate its grand opening in August. At the present time the Chamber is leading similar task force groups focusing on the shortage of daycare and affordable housing, a future event center venue and the recreational needs of Bismarck/Mandan.

The Chamber also works each day as an advocate for business, speaking on behalf of its members. In fact, the Chamber staff is already preparing for the 2015 legislative session. They work with members to craft legislation and during the session will testify in favor or against proposed legislation. The Chamber staff has developed a positive working relationship with all our elected leaders in North Dakota and Washington, D.C.

As we Chamber members are busy managing the needs of our business and customers, the Chamber staff is busy working with leaders in the private and public sectors to ensure the future prosperity of Bismarck/Mandan. The Chamber keeps their focus on the big picture for Bismarck/Mandan, always thinking about what will help our cities continue to grow and be great places to live.

It’s easy to understand what most of us “do.” We sell insurance, build houses, provide healthcare or sell ATVs. The Chamber brings people together to move Bismarck/Mandan forward. You may not see the Chambers day-to-day work but the final results are evident in the growing prosperity of our communities.

Enjoy the blessing of a North Dakota summer.

DOWNTOWN BISMARCK A HOT SPOT FOR COMMERCE, SOCIALIZATION AND URBAN LIVING By Kylie Blanchard, Clearwater CommunicationsBismarck’s Downtown has experienced steady growth in recent years and is now becoming a hot spot for commerce, socialization and urban living. And according to the Bismarck Downtowners Association, this type of revitalization is taking place across the country. “After malls opened in the early 1970s, downtowns across the country lost their anchor retailers and fell into a sleepy state,” says Kate Herzog, the Downtowners marketing and assistant director. “Nationally downtowns are coming back, and Bismarck is no exception.”

Herzog attributes this resurgence in part to private-public programs like the state’s Renaissance Zone and the city’s CORE tax incentive programs, which have contributed to the completion of approximately 100 Downtown projects. This, in turn, has created nearly $100 million in private investments, hundreds of full-time jobs, and more than 50 new businesses to Bismarck’s Downtown.

“The two programs also have a great rate of return. On average, the incentives are generally recouped in four to six years. After which, the property or business generates higher property and sales tax for decades to come,” she says. “Downtowns tend to be the most tax efficient part of a community, producing a lot of tax due to the density and mixed-use development.”

Herzog notes not all Downtown projects use the incentives, but all revitalization projects contribute greatly to the vibrancy of the area. “Either route a project takes, Downtown has made leaps and bounds in the last dozen years.”

Supporting Growth Many additional factors have contributed to the growth of Downtown Bismarck, including the community’s stable and growing economy. “Our city and Downtown are on the national radar,” says Brenda Smith, Bismarck City Commissioner and co-chair of the Downtown Subarea Implementation Task Force. “Investors see Bismarck as a growing, dynamic city with many opportunities for good rates of return.”

A study was completed of Bismarck’s Downtown this year and recently accepted by the Bismarck City Commission, which proposed making $22.5 million in improvements to Downtown within five years. “A task force was established by the City Commission to implement the study,” says Smith. “The private sector has also been very involved and committed to implementing this plan.”

“The Downtown Master Plan is a key component to Downtown Bismarck’s growth in the next five years,” adds Herzog. “From ambitious projects like the Depot Plaza, to redesigns of streets and corridors, this will set the tone for development.”

The full Downtown Master Plan can be viewed at www.downtownbismarckstudy.com.

New businesses are also being drawn to Downtown by the changing community dynamics. “North Dakotans are very entrepreneurial, and our state’s economy has been recognized as one of the best places to start a new business,” adds Herzog.

This has created a number of employment opportunities, in particular for young professionals. “Young professionals prefer a vibrant community core in cities where they work and live. We’ve seen young professionals start to migrate back to Bismarck-Mandan after experiencing unique urban communities elsewhere. This has created solid forward momentum for development and expansion.”

David Diebel, owner of D&N Cinematics, opened his business in Downtown Bismarck in July 2012. “We really like being a part of the Downtown atmosphere. We work here and we have fun here,” he says. “There is an energy, and we like being a part of it.”

Diebel moved back to Bismarck in 2010 following college and says Downtown has changed immensely since then. “There is a lot of vibrancy in the area and now more arts, culture, entertainment and restaurants. More and more small businesses like ours are also choosing Downtown locations.” He says being a part of the Downtown community also offers unique networking opportunities. “You run into people from other businesses and offices, and it really does feel like a community. Being a member of the Downtowners Association also provides us with many resources.”

The Downtowners Association has more than 200 members, with 70 percent of the membership located in Downtown and 30 percent doing business Downtown or vested in its revitalization, adds Herzog.

“This development is going to continue to foster an energy and passion for Bismarck’s Downtown,” Diebel continues. “We feel really lucky to have our place in Downtown. The future looks bright for this area.”

Downtown ProjectsThe Broadway Centre has been taking shape in Downtown Bismarck over the last three years, and owner and developer Steve Pine says he and his wife, Carla, decided to develop the property after assessing the needs of Downtown Bismarck. “We literally stumbled on this site, and we did not have a design in mind until after we bought the property,” he notes. “A couple of things that immediately became obvious were the need for Class A commercial space and downtown housing.”

The property’s Broadway Grill & Tavern is up and running, and the Centre’s current tenant list includes the Crowley Fleck Law Firm, Broadway Centre Spa & Salon, Pure Skin, CC’s Physical Therapy, North Dakota Petroleum Council, First Dakota Title and The Pine Companies. “Not all tenants are in their space at this time,” he notes, adding there is also still commercial and retail space available.

The building’s third floor includes luxury condos, and Pine says it will likely be 18 to 24 months before all commercial space and condos are completed. “The community response has been overwhelmingly favorable, and we have had a lot of positive feedback regarding the project. The restaurant has been very successful, and we continually have interest in the condos.”

“Downtown Bismarck is seeing a rejuvenation with a number of new restaurants and bars opening over the past few years,” he continues. “The downtown area is becoming more of an attraction for both residents and folks from out of town.”

Moving ForwardSmith says there are challenges in developing Downtown, which include the railroad and parking. “The Quiet Rail will help with this obstacle and there is the possibility of a pedestrian underpass so Downtown is not so disjointed,” she notes. “Also the challenge of parking has always been an issue and I think Downtown patrons are starting to embrace the idea of parking ramps.”

Page 5: July Chamber Connection

www.bismancc.com

Chamber Connection | 5

Construction of a $13 million parking ramp continues on the corner of Thayer Avenue and Sixth Street and it is expected to be occupied in September. “As we continue to grow, we will have to continue to find ways to address parking,” Smith adds.

But even as these challenges are addressed, Downtown Bismarck will continue to draw people, businesses and developers because of its unique offerings, says Herzog. “People like Downtown Bismarck and downtowns in general because of their character and mixed-use density. Having a compact neighborhood of businesses creates walkability, and that’s great for business owners and developers.”

“The downtown is the heart of a community,” says Smith. “If the downtown is doing well, then generally the rest of the city is doing well. Bismarck is a growing, vibrant community showcased by a vibrant and exciting Downtown.”

MEMBER PROFILEFeaturing Sara Haugen with

AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETYQ: Briefly tell me about yourself and your role within the organization.A: I have been with the American Cancer Society (ACS) for almost five years, and am currently the Account Representative for Health Systems in the state of ND. I am responsible for collaborating with state health systems, the primary care association and federally qualified health centers across the state to increase cancer screening rates. This position is relatively new to the ACS and is a product of our recently “transformed” structure. I have been married to my husband, Erich, for almost five years and we have a beautiful one year old daughter, Lilly.

Q: Briefly tell me the history of American Cancer Society.A: The American Cancer Society was founded in 1913 by 15 prominent physicians and business leaders in New York City. At that time, a cancer diagnosis amounted to near certain death. Today, the ACS is a global leader in the fight against cancer, with $1 billion in resources annually to save lives by helping people stay well and get well, by finding cures, and by fighting back against the disease. Thanks in part to the Society’s work, there are nearly $14 million people alive in the United States alone who have survived cancer. In fact, more than 400 lives are being saved each day that would have otherwise been lost to cancer. And we won’t rest until we expand that progress so that no one – in the US or around the world – will ever lose another birthday to cancer.

It’s about being sure that we understand and can meet the expectations of our stakeholders according to the highest possible standard of organizational governance, accountability, transparency and stewardship of the resources entrusted to us.

Q: Have there been any monumental changes in the industry that you’ve had to deal with?A: Change seems to be a constant at the American Cancer Society. Not only are we working on a grassroots level with volunteers around the world, but we are funding life-saving scientific research. The ACS is the largest non-governmental funder of cancer research in the US. We get results by investing in various research efforts to help us understand cancer’s causes, determine how best to prevent it, and discover new ways to cure it. Our funding of groundbreaking cancer research has put us at the forefront of the scientific battle against this disease. Society-funded researchers have contributed to nearly every major cancer research breakthrough we’ve seen in the more than 60 years since the Society’s research program began. They’ve helped establish the link between cancer and smoking; demonstrated the effectiveness of the Pap test; developed cancer-fighting drugs and biological response modifiers such as interferon; dramatically increased the cure rate for childhood leukemia; proven the safety and effectiveness of mammography; and so much more.

Q: What does the future of your business look like and the industry as a whole look like to you?A: A new report by the American Cancer Society – in collaboration with the National Cancer Institute – estimates there are almost $14.5 million cancer survivors alive in the US today, and that number will grow to almost 19 million by 2024. This includes everyone who’s ever had cancer, from the time of diagnosis for the rest of their life. As this population grows, ensuring they have the right care and support is becoming increasingly important. Researchers, doctors, and health organizations are working on improving and adding to the resources and systems available for helping cancer survivors live the best lives possible.

Q: American Cancer Society has been a member since 2003, why do you continue to renew each year?A: It is important for us to remain connected with what is happening in our community, and our business relies on forming strong relationships with our constituents. Being a Chamber member gives us an opportunity to do both.

Q: What should Chamber members know about your company that may assist them within theirs?A: The American Cancer Society is the nationwide, community-based, voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy, and service. We offer programs and services to cancer patients and their caregivers, and we give people a place to go for information and an opportunity to fight back against cancer.

MCQUADE DISTRIBUTINGNAMED GRANITE AWARDRECIPIENTThe Bismarck-Mandan Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce McQuade Distributing as the 2014 Granite Award recipient.

The Granite Award is presented each year to one local business that has been a dependable employer and community steward for 50 years or more. McQuade Distributing was founded in Bismarck, ND in 1947 by Sam McQuade, Sr. after returning to Bismarck as a veteran of WWII. The company started as a Grain Belt distributor and slowly grew its portfolio over the years, to include Anheuser-Busch in 1955.

The McQuade Distributing mission has never just been quality sales and service, but truly providing a family-like atmosphere for its employees and providing for a better community. In 1976, Sam Sr. started the McQuade Charity Softball Tournament. This June marks the 39th year and has raised over $1.5 million for our local community, making it the world’s largest charity softball tournament. Beyond the softball tournament, McQuades donates thousands of dollars each year to local programs and charities. Sam Jr’s daughter, Shannon McQuade-Ely joined the business in 2000 and is now the President. All three generations of McQuades have had a passion for the Bismarck-Mandan community and surrounding areas and look forward to bringing the business into a fourth generation.

McQuade Distributing was chosen for the 2014 Granite Award by the Chamber’s Excellence in Business Committee (EIB). “McQuade Distributing came to the top of our list after reviewing their steady operational success as well as their community involvement and philanthropy,” said EIB chairman Mike Schmitz from Widmer Roel PC.

“The Granite Award is a huge honor for any company to be awarded. It is special because it means we have been recognized by our peers as an upstanding community business with longevity. McQuade Distributing takes a lot of pride in being a positive part of the Bismarck-Mandan area and it is nice to be honored for that effort,” said company President Shannon McQuade-Ely.

The Granite Award will be presented to McQuade Distributing on August 7, 2014, during Celebrate Bismarck-Mandan, an annual event hosted by the Chamber. Celebrate recognizes local businesses and business leaders for their achievements. Tickets to the event are available at www.bismarckmandan.com/events or by calling 701-223-5660. Chamber sponsorships are also available for this event.

LEADERSHIP BISMARCK-MANDAN FIELD PROJECTS

People packed the Bismarck Aero Center on June 6th to experience a little bit of Las Vegas flair. JuniorAchievement of Bismarck-Mandan (JA) turned a Bismarck Aero Center hanger into a mini-casino, setting the stage for their 9th annual JA Casino Night event.

“Every year gets bigger and better,” said JA

Director Sally Paulson, “It always amazes me how ourcommunity pitches in to provide great items for a great cause!”

Casino Night is one of two major fundraisers for the non-profit organization, which educates local students about economics, finances and entrepreneurism. The 2013-2014 school year brought Junior Achievement into 218 classrooms and over 5,000 students reached with this amazing program.

“The proceeds from this event stay in our community to support the curriculum that we bring into Bismarck and Mandan classrooms,” said Paulson. Participants played traditional casino games of chance and cashed in fake money for bucket auction tickets. In addition to dozens of auction items, a raffle was conducted for a Honda lawnmower and a $500 Visa gift card.

“Again, our JA board and volunteers created an event the community can be proud of. I’m extremelygrateful to all who helped and the businesses that supported Casino Night through sponsorships anddonations,” said Paulson.

This year’s award was presented to Renae Hoffman Walker. She has served on numerous non-profit boards, Downtown Street Fair, Carries Kids, Ronald McDonald House, United Way, church council, and other foundations and non-profit organizations. Hoffman Walker has also served in leadership roles on local PR associations, panels, spoken at Leadership Bismarck-Mandan Issue Days, serves as adjunct professor for the University of Mary, and was a past member of the Leadership Bismarck-Mandan Board of Directors and served as its program director. Hoffman Walker was a member of the first graduating class of the Leadership Bismarck-Mandan program. She is currently employed with Bismarck Public Schools serving as Director of Community Relations.

DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARD

Each year, the Bismarck-Mandan Chamber’s Excellence in Business (EIB) Committee scours the membership to discover the businesses who stand out for their success. After soliciting nominations and screening applicants, the committee comes up with an ivy league of local

businesses for honors at the annual Celebrate Bismarck-Mandan event.

“Over the years, our committee has found that the hard part isn’t identifying successful businesses, but narrowing them down,” said Chamber staff liaison and Program Director Sally Paulson. “There are so many businesses that deserve the recognition we give at Celebrate.”

This year’s list of nominees provides evidence that there are numerous businesses operating successfully. The number of recipients has hit an all-time high for the event.

Included in the honors is the Small Business Person of the Year, Mike Fink Award for Steady Growth & Profitability, the Granite Award, Outstanding Teachers of the Year and the Golden Eagle Award.

“We are so excited that McQuade Distributing will be this year’s Granite Award recipient,” said Paulson.

Several businesses may be bestowed the Mike Fink Award while just one will receive the Small Business Person and Golden Eagle awards.

Celebrate Bismarck-Mandan is Thursday, August 7th at the Best Western Ramkota Hotel. The event begins with a reception at 11 a.m. with lunch and awards to follow. The cost is $30 for Chamber members and $35 for general admission.

Purchase tickets online at www.bismarckmandan.com/events or call 701-223-5660. Tickets must be purchased no later than Monday, July 25th and are required for admittance.

Leadership Bismarck-Mandan, the program credited with producing some of the area’s top leaders, held a graduation ceremony on May 21, 2014. Throughout the past seven months, 19 leaders gathered twice per month to participate in “Issue Days” by engaging emerging leaders in business and community issues. Some of the topics presented to the participants included local issues, natural resources, political involvement, health, education, military, economic development, agriculture, human services, media, ethics and values. The last segment of the program involves class members selecting and gathering input to develop a field project addressing a community need. This year there were three groups who presented field projects on the need for daycare in our community, downtown art, and a universal playground addressing all needs and abilities. Leadership Bismarck-Mandan begins with an orientation in September and graduation in May each year. Leadership Bismarck-Mandan applications are taken May-August with up to 20 selected for the class.

The following students were recognized during a luncheon on May 21. Several of the founders were present at the graduation: Dan Halvorson (formerly with Lips & Lahr Insurance), George Keiser, Quality Printing, Chuck Peterson, Jobbers Moving & Storage, and Nancy Deichert (former Staff Program Director). Marilyn Johnson and Kevin Dvorak, participants of the first Leadership graduating class, presented a fitting tribute along with their class memories.

NORTH DAKOTA’S ECONOMIC GROWTH OUTPACES ALL OTHER STATES FOR FOURTH

CONSECUTIVE YEARFor the past four years, North Dakota’s economy has continued to outpace all other states, according to information released today by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA). Factors driving the state’s robust economy include continued growth in economic production, new jobs and rising wages. North Dakota’s gross domestic product (GDP), a measure of total economic production, increased 9.7 percent last year to top economic growth among all states for the fourth straight year. Mineral resources, including oil and gas extraction and coal mining, contributed 3.6 percent to North Dakota’s GDP growth. “It’s very encouraging that our continued economic growth stems from nearly every business sector and that no single industry tells the whole story of the great progress we’re making,” said Gov. Jack Dalrymple. “Moving forward, we will continue to support economic growth through low taxes, a sensible and effective regulatory environment and a state government that is responsive to the needs of its people and businesses.” In 2013, North Dakota’s economy produced a record $49.8 billion. In the past four years, North Dakota’s economy has averaged an annual growth rate of about 12 percent compared to the national economy’s growth rate of 2 percent.

Wyoming produced the nation’s second strongest state economy in 2013, with a growth rate of 7.6 percent. The nation’s GDP growth rate slowed to 1.8 percent last year, after increasing 2.5 percent in 2012, the BEA reports. North Dakota’s continued economic growth is reflected in many areas of commerce including manufacturing, agriculture, the energy industry, construction, transportation, wholesale trade, retail trade and the finance and insurance sectors. The BEA report can be viewed at http://www.bea.gov. Other statistics that detail the state’s economic progress include:

• North Dakota has created 116,600 net jobs since 2000.

• North Dakota’s per-capita personal income of $57,084 represents the strongest income growth in the nation. In 2000, North Dakota’s per-capital personal income ranked 38th in the nation. Today, North Dakota’s personal income ranks second among all states.

• The state continues to have the nation’s lowest unemployment rate, at just 2.6 percent.

SORLIE MEMORIAL FUND TRANSFERS $54,000 TO BISMARCK-MANDAN COMMUNITY FOUNDATIONThe North Dakota Community Foundation has announced the recent transfer of over $54,000 from the Glenn and Helen Sorlie Memorial Fund to the Bismarck-Mandan Community Foundation. The Sorlie Memorial Fund was established in 2010 with a gift from the estate of Helen Sorlie. It has provided grants to area organizations for several years.

The donor-advised fund was guided by Glenn and Helen’s children Sue and Gus Sorlie and has provided grants to numerous organizations including the Central Dakota Humane Society. With the transfer, the Bismarck-Mandan Community Foundation advisory committee will determine future grant awards.

“I know that both our parents would appreciate the funds staying in the community,” said Sue Sorlie of their decision to transfer the money.

Glenn and Helen Sorlie lived in Bismarck for many years where Glenn worked a variety of jobs with the Bismarck Tribune including reporter, wire edition, city editor, imaging editor, publisher, and eventually president.

Both Glenn and Helen were active in a variety of local organizations including Rotary, Dakota Zoo, Chamber of Commerce, YMCA, Presbyterian Church, P.E.O., and the Humane Society.

The Bismarck-Mandan Community Foundation is currently benefiting from an Otto Bremer Foundation $1 Million Matching Grant. Any donations to the Bismarck-Mandan Community Foundation in 2014 are matched dollar-for-dollar by the Bremer Foundation, essentially doubling the impact of any gift.

“We are so pleased that Sue and Gus have chosen to support the Bismarck-Mandan Community Foundation in this way,” said Kevin Dvorak, President and CEO of the North Dakota Community Foundation, which manages both funds. “With the Otto Bremer Foundation’s $1 million matching grant, their gift will generate an additional $4,000 in grant money for local organizations every year.”

BISMARCK HORIZONTAL COLLECTOR WELL WINS “ENGINEERING EXCELLENCE” AWARDThe City of Bismarck, ND and AE2S (Advanced Engineering and Environmental Services, Inc.) have been awarded an “Engineering Excellence” award from the American Council of Engineering Companies of North Dakota (ACEC/ND) in the Water Resources category.

The award recognizes the City’s Horizontal Collector Well (HCW), a one-of-a-kind project in North Dakota which provides an alternative way to tap into Bismarck’s primary water supply from the Missouri River. The HCW takes advantage of natural processes that help remove impurities from the water before treatment.

“The old intake was deficient and had a limited capacity,” said Ken Weber, PE, AE2S Project Manager for the design and construction of the HCW project. “There is an excessive amount of sediment in the Missouri River, and it’s pretty expensive to keep that clear. The new system actually uses the sand bank along the Missouri River to filter-out turbidity (water impurities and color) which has a correlation with water-borne micro-organisms. It will also eliminate both variations in the raw water quality and the future need for expanded pretreatment at the Bismarck Water Treatment Facility.”

Design and construction of the HCW system required a phased approach due to the complexity of the project. The design process looked at potential sites along the Missouri River with the correct deposits of sand and gravel that allow a HCW to work. Construction of the project began in June 2009. Phase I consisted of a collector caisson and lateral wells, Phase II included the raw water transmission line from the well to the treatment plant, and Phase III consisted of the pumping station and electrical system at the well.

“We’re pulling the water through 80 feet of sand at all times, so no matter what happens to the condition of the water in the river, we’ll have a very consistent water quality at the Treatment Plant. We’ll also avoid siltation and fluctuating river level problems,” said Weber.

The purpose of the ACEC/ND awards is to recognize projects from across the state for uniqueness and innovative applications; future value to the engineering profession; perception by the public; social, economic, and sustainable development considerations; complexity; and successful fulfillment of client/owner’s needs, including schedule and budget.

In addition, the pharmacy carries a variety of competitively-priced over-the-counter products, offers cost-effective prescriptions and private, one-on-one consultations with a pharmacist.

An integral partner in healthcare, St. Alexius Mandan Clinic – North’s pharmacists work with medical providers in the clinic and recommend changes to a patient’s prescriptions if needed or if a more cost-effective alternative is available. “Pharmacists are that ‘extra eye’ to make sure a patient’s prescriptions do not present any interactions,” said Krissi Sperle, PharmD, owner/manager of St. Alexius Mandan Pharmacy.

The ranking was based on the percentage ICA’s revenue jumped in a one-year period, from year-end 2013 ($113,097,240) compared to year-end 2012 ($87,463,000) — an increase of more than 29 percent. The University of Mary’s School of Health Sciences and the Division of Nursing are proud to announce that the university has been approved by the Higher Learning Commission to offer its second

doctoral degree — the Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP) — to continue to meet the health care challenges emerging today.

Responding to recommended changes in the nursing field, the university received approval for its application that its current Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) degree be advanced from a Master’s of Science in Nursing (MSN) to a DNP.

This new doctorate in nursing will be a further addition to the university’s extensive health care programs dedicated to educating top-tier medical professionals. To meet the growing demands and complexity of health care delivery, a 2010 report from the Institute of Medicine called for a doubling of the number of doctoral prepared nurses by 2020.

“This approval represents not only remarkable effort and dedication and thorough preparation for the Higher Learning Commission site visit, but also daily attention to offering excellence at all levels of nursing education,” said Dr. Diane Fladeland, Vice President for Academic Affairs at the University of Mary.

“We owe gratitude and congratulations to Dr. Billie Madler, Director of Graduate and Distance Education in the Division of Nursing; Dr. Jodi Roller, Dean of the School of Health Sciences; Dr. Glenda Reemts, Division Chair, and all nursing faculty, as well as Dr. Kim Long, who worked with the faculty in preparation of the (application) report and visit,” she said.

This new offering will amplify the educational opportunities that the university currently offers, Madler

said, meeting challenges such as shortages of primary care professionals in the state.

The University of Mary’s first doctorate, established in 2003 with the first graduating class in 2006, is the Doctorate of Physical Therapy.

“This new doctorate is another wonderful addition to the University of Mary,” said Monsignor James Shea, president of the University of Mary. “Nursing education was one of the university’s founding cornerstones, and continues to be a vital and growing legacy of the Benedictine Sisters’ desire to serve the needs of the people.

“We are tremendously proud of this long tradition of excellence. This new doctorate is another step forward, in a time of exciting growth for the university, to serve the expanding and complex needs of our community, of western North Dakota, the state, region and beyond.”

The doctoral program is currently underway with its first cohort, Roller said. Its first doctoral class is expected to graduate in May 2016.

Q: DO I NEED TO PROTECT MY SKIN FROM THE SUN EVEN ON CLOUDY SUMMER DAYS?

A: Everyone needs protection from the sun’s harmful rays that can damage skin even on cloudy days. Skin cancer, the most common cancer in the U.S., is almost totally preventable.

• Wear sunscreen to help prevent skin damage when outdoors.

• Select a sunscreen with protection from both UVA and UVB rays.

• Use sunscreen with an SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of at least 30.

• Apply sunscreen liberally. Rub in about one ounce of sunscreen (about the size of a ping pong ball) to every part of your body exposed to sun. Apply 30 minutes before going outside.

• Once you are outdoors, reapply sunscreen every two hours or more.

• Wear lip balm with an SPF or 30 or higher, and reapply every two hours.

Q: HOW DO I PROPERLY CARE FOR A SUNBURN?

A: Now that summer has begun, it is very important to apply sunscreen regularly in order to prevent sunburns. However, if you do get a burn, there are multiple treatment options available. First, it is very important to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids. This is because the sunburn draws fluid into your skin and away from the rest of the body. Moisturizing lotions, aloe vera, or a cold compress may be applied to help soothe the skin, and hydrocortisone may also be used for a day or two to help with discomfort. Avoid using petrolatum or other ointments because these can prevent heat from escaping the skin. Ibuprofen can be taken in order to help with pain and swelling. While Tylenol may help with the pain, it will not help with swelling like an ibuprofen product will. It is important to see your doctor if you experience fever, nausea, chills, if the sunburn is blistering over a large area of your body, or if the sunburn is not improving after two days.

Q: I WANT TO REBRAND MY BUSINESS. WHAT’S MY FIRST STEP?

A: Your brand is the public face of your business. When it fails to reflect what your business stand for, it’s time for a rebrand. The first step in considering a rebrand should be to evaluate your current branding efforts and determine whether they align with what your business stands for. Ask yourself these three questions:

• Does my current brand attracting the customers I most want to work with?

• Does my brand reflect my personality?

• Has my business grown or evolved from when I first started out?

Once you’ve answered these questions, you can get the ball rolling by working with a designer that understands visual branding and it’s importance for your business growth. After all, a business rebrand is more than just making your business look good. It’s about making your bottom line look good, too!

Q: WHY SHOULD I HIRE A REALTOR TO SELL MY HOME?

A: Agents are the buffers between you and the buyers. They will filter the serious buyers from the “lookie loos”. They have neighborhood knowledge of your area and can identify comparable sales. Contrary to what some people think, agents do not select prices for sellers, they help to guide you to make the right choices for you, the client. Agents have access to market conditions and to other professionals to help guide you through the process to get the most for your property. Agents negotiate well because they can remove themselves from the emotional aspects of the transaction. They will guide you through the process to assure that you have covered all the bases to have a great experience selling your home!

Q: HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE FOR MY NEW HOME TO BE CONSTRUCTED?

A: There are many variables that will be a factor in how long it will take to construct your new home. The first is whether or not the streets are in where your lot is located. If so, the builder can begin construction as soon as they receive a permit. If not, construction cannot begin until all infrastructure and streets are completed. The timeframe for this can vary tremendously depending on how many new developments are occurring. Once construction begins weather, scheduling of contractors, how soon items get picked out for the home, and the amount of changes requested will all be major factors in how long the build of your new home will take.

Q: MY SON HAS ACNE ON HIS BACK AND CHEST AND IS ANXIOUS ABOUT UPCOMING SUMMER ACTIVITIES THAT WILL EXPOSE HIS SKIN.

WHAT CAN WE DO TO HELP?A: Acne is a common skin condition in the U.S. and occurs most often in teens and young adults. It is a disease that can be hereditary or triggered by hormones or emotional stress. Excessive washing and scrubbing will not prevent or cure acne. I recommend using a mild cleanser. A trial of non-prescription acne medication may be worth consideration.Left untreated, acne can lead to permanent scarring, decreased self-confidence and depression. Prevention is key to stopping acne from worsening, but if it’s already developed, our current treatment program has proven to be highly successful. UND Center for Family Medicine is accepting new patients and next-day dermatology appointments are available.
