In this section Aberdeen City Libraries use images from their collection to look back into the city’s past. For this first edition, the focus is on some of Aberdeen’s best loved parks.
Victoria Park was Aberdeen’s first public park. It was developed by the Town Council between 1871 and 1873. This early 20th century colourised postcard shows the fountain at the centre of the park. The fountain was designed by J.B. Pirie and built of 14 different types of granite. It was presented to the park by the master masons of Aberdeen and completed in 1881.
Union Terrace Gardens was the second of Aberdeen’s public parks to open. Unlike Victoria Park, it had an official opening and this took place on 11th August 1879. Over the years UTG has played host to a wide variety of entertainment and festivals. This image shows a well-attended evening performance of country dancing during the late 1970s. The Belmont Cinema and Belmont Congregational Church are visible in the background. The park is also known for its attractive floral displays. It is currently under redevelopment and due to reopen in 2021.
