Summer Reading Program

Summer is the perfect time to build, create and have fun with friends and family. Community Library is a great place to help your imagination take off. Our theme this summer is Imagine Your Story. Registration begins June 8 and ends August 1. To log your hours, register on Beanstack at communitylib.beanstack.com. All ages are welcome to join, and will be categorized in the program as follows:

Preschool (Birth to Age 5)

Elementary School (Going into Kindergarten to Grade 5)

Middle School (Going into Grades 6-8)

High School (Going into Grades 9-12)

Adults 18+ To earn points, activities for participants will include reading, puzzles, book reviews and more. The more points you earn increases your chances to win prizes.

Brown Bag Kits for Kids

Ages 4-11

Do you enjoy the projects at the Youth Services craft tables? These projects will now be available in “brown bag kits for

kids” outside each library door. We respectfully ask that you limit one per child per week for kids ages 4-11. Some bags may contain small parts, so parental supervision is recommended. First come, first served until all bags are gone.

Minecraft Mania: Survival Challenge

Calling Minecrafters of all skill levels to a one-of-a-kind gaming experience. Presented by Clean Minecraft Videos. Participants need a device that can access Zoom and a device that can access Minecraft. (If playing on a laptop/computer, this can be the same device.) A limited number of Minecraft (laptop) accounts are available for temporary/one-time use if you don't have your own account.

Fairy Tale Writing Contest

Ages 8-12 & 13-18

“Once upon a time…” Your job is to finish the story! Your fairy tale should be typed and 1-5 pages in length. Include your first and last name, age and phone number or email address. Feel free to include illustrations (not required). Email completed essays to Mr. Jared ([email protected]) or turn in at either Community Library location by Friday, July 31. Winners will be announced on our website and Facebook in August. An Amazon gift card will be awarded to 1st place in each age category. Winners will be judged on their creativity and writing skills within their age category. All participants will receive a free book.

Journey into the world of LEGO fairy tales by exploring dragons and the features that make these creatures so terrifying and fascinating. Presented via Zoom by Snapology, McHenry, IL.

LEGO Challenge #1 | Zipline

Build a vehicle that will carry a LEGO person down a zipline. The zipline would be from the top of a door frame to the floor below. Can you make the vehicle move faster by tweaking it or making the line tauter?

LEGO Challenge #2 | Balloon Powered Vehicle

Build a vehicle that will travel by balloon power. Measure the distance your vehicle travels and include that information with the photo or video!

How high can you build a tower? Using a 4”x 4” base as your starting point and build a tower as tall as your ceiling. You may need to get adult help to use a ladder! Good luck to the architects of the future.

LEGO Challenge #3 | Getting Spacey /

Build a LEGO spacecraft that is not made using a kit. Do you have what it takes to become a NASA engineer? Show the world your mad engineering skills! Gain tips by seeing what the competition and other LEGO engineers have put together.

Weekly Minute-to-Win-It Challenges

Ages 12-18

Compete against other teens in a weekly challenge. All you have to do is submit a video of yourself completing the challenge in 60 seconds or less. The most successful competitor every week will receive a $5 Amazon gift card. Check our Facebook page for weekly instructions.

Winston Churchill Historical Portrayal by Terry Lynch

Bulldog Winston Churchill was one of the most influential people of the 20th century. From his participation in the Boer War as a military journalist, to his time as first lord of

the Admiralty, his career in Parliament and finally his becoming British Prime Minister in 1940, Churchill saw England through some of the darkest days of WWII. How to Draw Realistic Owls: An Online Workshop

Registration required

In this prerecorded video lesson by art teacher Christine Thornton, you will discover

how to draw realistic owls complete with correct proportions. You will warm up by drawing owl eyes, then choose your favorite owl to make into a final drawing. We’ll use simple drawing supplies such as pencil, eraser and drawing paper. Whatever you have at home, we’ll make it work!

Youth Services Programs

In its ongoing support of the Library, the Friends' Board voted to donate $5,000 to contribute towards Youth Services programming for 2020.

Funds will be used to sponsor youth program materials and program presenters. The Friends are pleased to be able to contribute to a vital part of the Library’s services.
