Hey Doc! Your Arsenal has arrived!

We are proud to announce that our beloved Arsenal system is in Limited Market Release (LMR)! The release of this system is a true testament to the commitment and dedication of the Alphatec employees, pulling together

across departments as a uniformed and cohesive team to bring this product to market.

In order to show you why we are so excited about this product, let’s take a look at a couple of interesting recent cases. The first was performed by Dr. Bret Abshire in Temecula, CA on June 30. He completed an L2-S1 PLIF with Iliac fixation. The pre-op x-rays showed multilevel degenerative disease with some curvature of the spine and a flat lumbar spine. To restore lordosis, Dr. Abshire completed an L5-S1 Smith-Peterson Osteotomy and a posterior lumbar fusion (see image #1). For a first case, this was a true test and Arsenal performed exceptionally well.

Another interesting case was performed by Dr. Troy in Chicago on July 6. This was a revision of a previous fusion at L5-S1, the hardware from the previous surgery was removed, then replaced with Arsenal and extended two more levels to L3. The surgeon was thoroughly impressed with the capabilities of the system and has booked multiple additional cases.

If you look closely at the image (see image #2) above, specifically the sacrum, you will notice a rather large screw… yes, that is a 10.5x40mm screw! You might think a screw like this would be difficult to handle, but that is not the case. To quote Dr. Troy, “These screws go in really fast, and have an incredible bite!”

In the first month of Limited Market Release, there have been approximately 46 procedures completed by 19 different surgeons with our Arsenal! The surgery calendar is populating very quickly as we move closer towards our goals for completing this phase by August 31. Thank you for all the support! We will continue to keep you informed and share the success stories along the way!

Zodiac and OsseoScrew Launch in Dominican Republic

adopting less invasive ways to treat their patients and, Alphatec Spine has very competitive MIS solutions to offer.

To support the launch of Illico in several countries of the region, Alphatec Spine held its first ‘Inspiration Asia Pacific MISS Summit’ in July 2014 in the vibrant and never sleeping city of Macau, China. The scientific faculty of the meeting consisted of highly experienced surgeons from Australia, Singapore and Taiwan, which are the leading markets of the region in regards to minimally invasive treatments and spinal innovation. We had the honor of hosting a special guest from Germany, Professor Michael Schnabel. He presented excellent insight on the possibilities to treat serious fractures and tumors with methods that are less invasive and traumatic to patients.

Thanks to the interactive character of the ‘Inspiration’ meeting concept, all participants were able to contribute and exchange their views and experiences, creating an ideal environment to learn and debate. At the end of the day, everyone had a chance to share what their individual take-home message was, which highlighted the added value of the meeting.

In June of this year, Alphatec launched the Zodiac DVR system and OsseoScrew in The Dominican Republic. The launch was kicked off with a presentation to about 30 surgeons and several

other attendees from healthcare insurance companies at a dinner organized by our distributor, GMD.

Special thanks to Loic Leleu, who was a tremendous help to us in achieving our goals with this launch. He was very accommodating and highly professional, which presented a great image of Alphatec to the surgeons.

The Alphatec group also visited Santiago City in the interior of Dominican Republic, where they introduced the Zodiac DVR system

to five KOL scoliosis surgeons. Following this introduction, four new scoliosis surgeries were booked! Alphatec’s goal for this Santiago physicians group is to have between 10-15 scoliosis cases booked each month.

Severe scoliosis case x-ray from patient in Spain

Surgeons using Zodiac DVR on live patient in Spain

By Ramses Linan and Katherine Salter

Following the IMAST Annual Meeting this July in Valencia, Spain, Alphatec held a special live surgical training, where we took advantage of our partnership with PRIM, our Distributor

based in Spain. The goal was to meet and train Key Opinion Leaders visiting from Columbia and The Dominican Republic on Zodiac DVR, OsseoFix and OsseoScrew. We were able to share the expertise of local Spanish surgeons who are already experienced in and advocates for these systems, to effectively teach the Latin American surgeons about the key benefits of using these Alphatec products. Throughout the week, we were able to see a total of five surgeries, ranging from scoliosis to a standard 2-level degen procedure where our visiting surgeons where able to get hands-on experience and see our products in action in the OR. This was another great opportunity to introduce these key products in more Latin American markets and especially to such esteemed Surgeons!

Special thanks to Juan Estaire and his team from PRIM for helping the Latin American division achieve our goal of promoting Alphatec to our new prospects. We are excited to say that all three of these systems have already been used in Colombia and The Dominican Republic by our visiting surgeons, following their return from this experience in Spain.

Live Surgical Training in Spain Corex Achieves Success in Florida HospitalBy David Frymoyer

The new Biologics product, Corex, is gaining traction in the marketplace and a perfect example of this is at Baptist Hospital in Florida. Here, Drs. Garcia and Petr have done multiple cases

with Corex in Sales Representative Todd Fordham’s territory. They both favor the iliac bone crest, “Gold Standard,” as their bone graft for fusion.

Dr. Garcia’s first Corex case was a 43-year old Male, who underwent a TLIF procedure (three level), which was a huge success. They were able to get three 3 – 3½ cm plugs from the iliac crest of cancellous bone (pictured below). The patient had extremely hard bone, requiring the surgeon to put more downward force on the instrument than originally expected. Despite this, the graft was harvested in approximately seven minutes. Dr. Garcia went back with a curette to scrape some additional graft as he wanted to make sure he had enough bone to fill the interbody cages and disc space in all three levels. He was very pleased with the outcome, commenting that it “saved me a lot of time!”

Dr. Petr was also a first time user of Corex. His patient was a 74-year old male, also undergoing a TLIF procedure (two-level) with Degenerative Disc Disease. Once again, Corex performed very well. They were able to get a total of five 3½ – 4cm plugs from the iliac crest, harvesting graft from both sides. Following the surgery, Dr. Petr commented, “the use of the Corex device was very simple and user-friendly”, saving him about an hour of time on his case. He told the manager to make sure it gets added to his preference card to be on every lumbar fusion case for him. Great job Todd Fordham in selling this product!

Todd states that because of these two cases, the hospital is now going to start ordering these products themselves. Todd and his team worked diligently to get this product not only approved by the hospital, but to get his surgeons interested and excited to use the product. Have you talked to your surgeons about Corex yet?

First BridgePoint Surgery in Italy

AlphatecXchange is open for Business!

By Federico Bovi

This past June, Dr. Marco Ceccarelli, Orthopaedic Surgeon in Casa di Cura S.Zita Lucca, performed the first BridgePoint Surgery in Italy. This was done on a patient previously operated

on with a XIA III Fixation System on S1-L4. Dr. Ceccarelli executed a revision to solve a Junctional Syndrome issue on L3-L4. The surgical Procedure was executed with a percutaneous insertion of an 11mm Titanium Novel SD Cage to restore anterior space and proper lordosis. Following that, a Bridgepoint device was positioned to restore posterior tension-band.

The entire procedure went extremely well, and the day after the surgery the patent was able to walk out of the hospital to go home. The first BridgePoint case in Italy was a huge success!

EMEA Sales Meeting in Engen, Germany VIP SEM White Paper Featured on Beckers Spine websiteBy Peter Kohlbecher

The sales update meeting for Europe, Middle East and Africa took place in Engen, Germany in early July. The successful first semester 2014 was reviewed and the plans and

expectations for the second semester were assessed against the original plan and updated. So far, the business year for the region has been very promising and we expect the trend to continue for the rest of the year.

Sean O’Reilly who is our new Managing Director for the UK, participated for the first time in this meeting as well as Manuela Zirell who started in December as part time administrative assistant.

The entire team is extremely motivated to take Alphatec in the EMEA region to the next level. The year 2015 will be started again with a distributor kick-off meeting in Carlsbad in mid-January. The overall consensus was that Alphatec is gaining more and more momentum due to consistent and sustainable activities.

A stable and dynamic distribution network combined with a highly effective training and education program in Vienna, Austria and Leipzig, Germany contribute to attract more and more users. Another significant factor in our success is the group of key opinion leaders we have backing us. They are very engaged in this program and therefore network and recommend Alphatec and its innovative products to other colleagues.

By Maribeth Scott

Beckers Spine Review, a leading orthopedic and spine website, recently featured the Alphatec Spine white paper “The Effect of Mesenchymal Stem Cell Migration and Adhesion on

Demineralized Bone Scaffolds under Vacuum Infusion Packaging Technology.”

This exciting study was performed at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS), New York City under the direction of Celeste Abjornson, PhD, and tested MSC action through a variety of hydration/soaking techniques on Profuse Bioscaffold and competitive grafts—including both Grafton (Medtronic) and Osteosponge (Bacterin). The study clearly showed the benefits of hydrating a bioscaffold through VIP: mesenchymal stem cells showed improved migration and adhesion and functional cell cluster characteristics results versus competitive products (Bacterin, Grafton) that were hydrated via traditional soaking methods.

This paper should be an important part of your VIP sales presentations: download a copy of this paper from the Alphatec Spine portal and send to your surgeons today!

UK Sales Force Takes Training to New LevelBy Peter Butler

T he UK team went through a week of training in June with Loic Leleu of France and several surgeons: Mr. Mark Thomas, Mr. John Howse, Mr. John Yeh and Mr. David Harrison. They focused on a range of different pathologies and indications from lumbar

and cervical degeneration to anatomy and deformity. This kind of training from the clinicians themselves, aims to raise the spinal knowledge of the team to a much higher level. More of these activities are planned for later in the year!
