NOTES FROM STAFF

WESN IS HIRING!• Manager of Programs• Administrative Assistant

Please watch for these job postings at http://wesn.ca/jobopportunities/

Much has happened since I wrote you last in the May newsletter. On a personal note, my paternal grandmother Erna passed away. She lived a good life of over ninety years, remained in her own home until the end, and died with her five sons around her. She was a positive and uniting force in our family, and one of the many reasons I chose to pursue working in this field. I miss her but I am proud to be her grandson.

On a lighter note, I am writing to you after wrapping up another successful Strawberry Festival. The sun came out just as the afternoon was kicking off, and the strawberries were perfectly moist and delicious. I hope you all enjoyed yourselves, the music, the short-cake, the vendors and exhibitors, and the company of your fellow West End residents. I think that Jenna, Mhairi, Tasha and the rest of the staff put on a great event, and I am very thankful to them and to our donors, sponsors and the fantastic team of volunteers who made the festival fun for the whole family.

There have also been some important staff changes in the last two months. Of course, our summer student Jenna Lee started in May and has already helped organize and execute the Strawberry Festival. She is a great addition to the team and we are pleased to have her with us until the end of August. Tim Bissett has closed out our highly successful one-year Representation Agreement Outreach Program and moved on to another position. We are sad to see him go but he accomplished a major feat and we wish him well.

And finally, many of you know that Susan Moore has been away from Kay’s Place for the past few months. In her absence, two individuals have stepped in on a temporary basis to keep Kay’s Place running smoothly. Many of you already know one of these individuals, Veronica Page, a past Kay’s Place volunteer who recently completed a one-year staff position directing our Housing and Elder Abuse Outreach Program. She is joined by Karsten Kaemling, another Kay’s Place volunteer who has been leading our housing support efforts. Together they make a great team, and I am confident that Kay’s Place will continue to be a welcoming place for members and volunteers under their leadership.

Laura FeeManager of Clothes and Collectibles

As Manager of Clothes & Collectibles, my goal is to support WESN, provide a safe and meaningful volunteer experience, and provide reasonably priced used goods to our customers. I have enjoyed almost six hectic and educational months at the store, and in that time, I’ve reviewed staff schedules, traffic, and sales. I’ve asked a lot of questions, monitored donations and dust, and encouraged advice and comments from our staff, volunteers and customers. After consultation and meetings with both staff and volunteers we are ready to announce some major changes.

First, our operational hours. Several months ago, we extended our Friday hours. Re-cently we opened on Thursday. This is part of our ongoing plan to increase hours as we recruit and train more volunteers. Our next step is to close the store on Monday, and open on Tuesday. This gives our staff a dedicated Sunday/Monday weekend, and provides consistent days that our customers can rely on. Starting July 4th, Clothes & Collectibles will be open Tuesday to Saturday. We will remain open until six o’clock during the week, but will close at five o’clock on Saturday.

Space and safety are ongoing issues for us. We spend a great amount of time making room for items, and dusting and cleaning shelves and bins. We have various allergies and sensitivities to contend with as well. We’ve had goods ruined by wet dogs, we’ve tripped over leashes or loose pets, and have been snarled and barked at. Our store is tiny and our first priority is the safety and comfort of seniors with mobility issues. Therefore, we can no longer allow pets of any kind in the store. We recognize that this may not be a popular decision, but we have the best interests of everyone at heart. Thanks for your understanding.

NOTES FROM STAFF

Clothes and Collectibles’ operating hours are Tuesdays - Fridays 10:00AM - 6:00PM; Saturdays 10:00AM-5:00PM.

NOTES FROM STAFF

Dora NgBetter at Home Coordinator

Life is rarely dull in 2016 but June has been as especially eventful month, and July will be more so.Last December WESN worked with CKNW to produce a three-part radio documentary on the challenges of aging in the West End. All seniors interviewed in the documentary are members, clients, and volunteers of the West End Seniors’ Network. The documentary covered many topics, ranging from the need for support services, and the joys and rewards of volunteering. The documentary, we are proud to announce, has gone on to win both local and national awards. We would like to thank all the folks interviewed for sharing your stories and insights. Your stories are an important part of our conversation on the importance of caring for our seniors. The documen-tary can be heard at http://www.cknw.com/2016/06/04/cknw-wins-national-rtdna-award/

And then we barely had time to celebrate before we were shaken and devastated by news of the shooting in Orlando at Pulse Night. The unfathomable act of violence claimed 49 young lives, 49 young people who were primarily of Latinx descent. That the shooter chose specially to unleash his hate on a gay nightclub, on Latin Night, is a grim reminder of the hate and violence that is indeed out there in the world, and that for queer, trans people of colour the experience of that violence can be magnified.

In my personal life I had the honour to co-write and co-perform a theatre piece called “The Pink Line: Pain Held Tight”, a piece that talks about dating as a queer person of colour in Vancouver, at the Queer Arts Festival. The Queer Arts Festival has dedicated all their performances and exhibitions this year to the victims of Orlando, and calls for “ever more gentleness” in the face of loss and tragedy. We performed to a full house, and I know that Vancouver is ready, to both give and receive more gentleness.

To celebrate, to love, to be gentle and to be joyful in the face of hate and violence is, I believe, the most radical and revolutionary act of all. This year, with an especially defiant spirit, the West End Seniors’ Network would like to invite our members who identify with any or all colours of the rainbow to celebrate with us at our Aging with Pride party at the Coast Plaza Hotel on Thursday, July 28, from 2 - 5 pm, and to all LGBT and ally members to march with us at the Pride Parade on Sunday, July 31st. We will also be playing LGBT themed movies every Friday in July at our Friday Movie Club.

Please email Dora Ng at [email protected] to register or for more information, or call at 604-669-5051.

Happy July! I hope everyone enjoyed the Strawberry Festival as much as I did. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect for my first Strawberry Festival but it exceeded my expectations and I had a lot of fun! My newsletter piece this month is dedicated to the AMAZING volunteers who helped out at this year’s 26th annual Strawberry Festival. Plain and simple, the Strawberry Festival would not have been such a success without your hard-work. Thank you!!!

This month brings changes to Kay’s Place with two new temporary staff members, Karsten Kaemling and Veronica Page. Both Veronica and Karsten have been very involved with Kay’s Place. Veronica through her previous role as Housing and Elder Abuse Outreach co-ordinator, and Karsten in his volunteer role on Thursday afternoons in Housing Support and so you may already have met with them over the past year.

As the new co-ordinators delve further into their roles and responsibilities we would like to share with you their hours. You will find Veronica at Kay’s Place every Monday and Tuesday from 10:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M., and on Friday afternoons from 1:00PM. to 4:00PM. Tim BissettRepresentation Agreement Outreach Program Coordinator

I wanted to say Good-bye and Thank you! Our Representation Agreement Outreach Program achievements are nothing short of remarkable!

To my team of volunteers who were so dedicated…Carrie, Connie, Ken, Lois, Mel, Melanie, Sally, and Sheila… a HUGE “Thank You” for your selfless contributions to the welfare of our members and other age 55+ folks in our neighbourhood! You are worthy of great praise!

Yours was not an easy volunteer position to hold. Your were required to learn so much about these legal documents, and many of you continued to give of your time even longer than originally planned. Some of you worked 2 months longer!

Together we far exceeded all target goals set by the United Way on their grant for this program:

Targets: Conduct 5 public presentations to 100 attendees; RA Volunteers to conduct 40 One-to-One Help Sessions;RA Volunteers to provide 25 adults aged 55+ with FREE Representation Agreements.

Achieved:We conducted 7 full presentations + 2 mini presentations to over 210 attendees!!!; RA volunteers conducted 397 One-to-One Help Sessions!!!; RA Volunteers provided 167 FREE Representation Agreements!!!; And we helped 110 adults register their Representation Agreements in the Nidus Registry!!!

Thank you to Susan Moore for suggesting me for this position, and to you and Anthony for your constant support. It has been a great pleasure to have worked with the WESN staff who were so helpful and kind to me and my volunteers throughout this program: Mhairi, Dora, and Tasha. Thank you to the other WESN volunteers, who took appointments and answered questions about our program.

And to the WESN members, Thank You for your participation and for being so enthusiastic about this program. And thank you for all the beautiful positive feedback you passed on to Anthony, and for taking the time to give it. It has truly been a pleasure to have run this program and to have met so many of you. I am off to be the Director of a luxury Spa downtown. Hope to see many of you around the neighbourhood!

Jenna LeeProgram and Event Assistant

Finally, I can say it: We’ve done it! The Strawberry Festival has finally been conclud-ed. This was the largest event I have had the opportunity of organizing thus far - and certainly no easy task! - but I am pleased to call the event a success. While I am thankful for the weather that granted us nothing but sunshine throughout the event, my greatest thanks are still due to the incredible groups and individuals who made this event possible. This was a task no one could dream to handle on their own, so I’d like to give my sincerest thanks to the volunteers and my fellow staff at the West End Seniors’ Network who worked tirelessly prior to and on the day of the event; the many vendors, musicians, and associates who brought our field and Barclay Street to life; and of course, the festival goers for the laughter and smiles. This was an experience for the books, and I hope you all enjoyed yourselves as much as I did! Cheers.

NOTES FROM STAFF

This month’s recipe corner features a very different sauce recipe. I adapted this stir fry sauce many years ago from The Frog Commissary Cookbook, a collection of recipes from two favourite (but now closed) restaurants in my hometown of Philadelphia. I use it when I stir fry vegetables with almonds or cashews, but it also goes with a poultry or meat stir fry and plain steamed rice.STIR FRY SAUCE1 tablespoon sesame oil ½ teaspoon pepper1 teaspoon minced fresh ginger Juice of ½ lemon1 teaspoon minced fresh garlic 1 tablespoon cornstarch1 cup (240 ml) water ¼ teaspoon hot pepper sauce 2 tablespoons soy sauce 1 teaspoon salt2 tablespoons Shaoxing rice wine or dry sherry1.Heat the sesame oil in a small saucepan. Add the ginger and garlic, and stir-fry for 30 seconds over medium heat. Add the water, soy sauce, hot pepper sauce, salt, pepper, and lemon juice. Bring just to a boil, stirring.2.Dissolve the corn starch in the Shaoxing rice wine, and whisk into the sauce. Heat until sauce thickens and reaches a full boil. Simmer for 30 seconds. Remove from heat, cover, and set aside until ready to use. Serve with stir-fried vegetables and steamed rice.Yield: about 1¼ cups (300 ml)Submitted by board treasurer, Andrea Banks
