Welcome to ‘In Touch’ –

the magazine of Cheltenham United Reformed Church, a joint pastorate of the three United Reformed Churches in Cheltenham, sharing a Minister, Revd Maz Allen. The three churches work very closely together, sharing this magazine, the website and all activities.

St Andrew’s United Reformed Church is in the Montpellier district of Cheltenham town centre. A former Presbyterian church founded in 1885, it became United Reformed on unification in 1972. Recent renovations now offer an impressive facility meeting the needs of 21st century Cheltenham.

Prestbury United Reformed Church is in the heart of Prestbury village on the northern edge of Cheltenham. A former Congregational chapel built in 1866, becoming United Reformed on unification in 1972.

The Church in Warden Hill is a Local Ecumenical Partnership (LEP) between the Anglican (St Christopher’s) and URC communities of Hatherley and Warden Hill in the south of Cheltenham. Ministry is shared between the URC Minister, Revd Maz Allen, and members of the Anglican South Cheltenham Team Ministry. Both the Anglican and URC buildings are regularly used for worship.

For other information about the Church in Warden Hill please see ‘The Lantern’ or visit www.tciwh.org.uk

Our Minister Writes:

Dear Friends, I seem to be in the thick of ‘saying goodbye’ to people. My close colleague, Jacqui Hyde, has left Warden Hill for pastures new in St. John’s, Churchdown, and one of our members from St. Andrew’s, Nan Richardson, passed away three months short of her hundredth birthday. I was able to say goodbye to her as I gave her her last communion. Goodbyes are a privilege even though they are sometimes painful. If we do not take the opportunity when we have the chance, we may regret it. Even Jesus made sure there were friends around him when he ascended into heaven. Pupils will be saying goodbye to their school teachers (many with relief – on both sides) and parents will soon be saying goodbye to students going off to university. As long as we keep channels of communication open, the parting is made easier, and the homecoming all the more heart-warming. God’s love for us is amazingly constant seeing as we flip in and out of relationship with him. Although we may blow hot and cold, God’s love never changes. So, with all the goodbyes to the ones we love tugging at our heartstrings, let us be very thankful that, in this life or the next, we have a Father who is there to welcome us to a new home, a new adventure, a new life.

Thanks be to God. Maz

St. Andrew’s Charity for July

‘WINSTON’S WISH’

Winston’s Wish was the brainchild of clinical psychologist Julie Stokes. In 1992 she visited the USA on a Winston Churchill Travelling Fellowship and was inspired by the services for children that she saw there. The result on her return was the establishment in Gloucestershire of Winston‘s Wish. The Churchill connection dropped away but the name Winston was adopted and Winston the Bear became the charity’s mascot.

The charity’s aim, i.e. Winston’s Wish, can be briefly summarised as “every bereaved child should receive the help they need to cope with the death of someone important in their lives.” Currently every year the charity supports some 30,000 children and young people up to the age of 18, supporting parents and carers too.

A combination of professionals and volunteers provide an array of services:

Residential weekends, where young people can share their stories and their grief with others

Home assessments

Short courses and groups specifically for families and carers

Special help for bereavement through murder or suicide

Outward Bound weekends to build confidence and share experiences

Training and consultancy for professionals

A national helpline (08452 030405)

Various publications and educational films

Through its work Winton’s Wish has links with other charities and organisations, such as MacMillan Cancer Support and Childline, with special attention paid to young people affected by bereavements in the Armed Forces.

More information is available from the website or from its head office in Cheltenham House, Clarence Street, Cheltenham, phone 515157.

St. Andrew’s Charity for August

ALZHEIMER’S SOCIETY

Dementia in some form can happen to anyone. Currently in the UK there are some 850,000 sufferers, and this is predicted to increase to a million by 2025.

The Alzheimer’s Society is the UK’s leading charity that both supports those affected by dementia and funds research into causes, treatments, possible cures, and ways of helping families and carers cope with the condition. At the present time public and government awareness is an important initiative, and there is particular emphasis on improving the means and speed of diagnosis and making better arrangements for living with dementia – for example the new series of adverts on television and in the press, and government/professional medical schemes.

The Society has its own research teams and also funds research in universities and NHS Trusts. There are specialist training programmes for professionals and for small groups of staff working with dementia.

The kind of assistance the Society can provide includes:

Help with financial affairs

Informative publications

A national helpline (0300 222 1122)

Access to resources available to professionals

Running Dementia or Memory Cafes, where anyone involved with dementia can meet others affected, share and discuss problems and obtain information about any of the Society’s activities.

Cheltenham has its own Memory Cafe, which meets once a month in the Municipal Offices. More information is available from the Memory Cafe, the helpline (see above), the Society’s website or by email on [email protected]

Eldership within Cheltenham

Induction and Ordination of Elders takes place annually at the United Pastorate Service. This service was held on Sunday 10th May at The Church in Warden Hill (St Christopher’s). There was an excellent congregation who appreciated Maz dovetailing the reception of new Members, the Induction of Elders and the 70th Anniversary of VE Day into the service plan. She preached on John 15 v9-17, one of the lectionary readings for the day, which focuses on LOVE. “My commandment is this: love one another, just as I love you. The greatest love a person can have for his friends is to give his life for them.” A ‘Bring and Share’ lunch followed the service.

United Reformed Church

Who is an Elder?

The ministry of Elders, as we have it today, has its origin in the New Testament, which witnesses to the variety of models of service in the early Church. Eldership is often a characteristic of Christian traditions which have their roots in the Reformation. Elders share with the minister of word and sacraments in the pastoral care and spiritual leadership of the local church, taking counsel together in the elders’ meeting for the whole congregation, and each having a group of members entrusted to his or her pastoral care. They also represent the local congregation in the wider councils of the church at Synod, General Assembly and ecumenically.

Eldership is a calling of God and a ministry of the Church and Elders are ordained. They are inducted to serve in a particular congregation, sometimes for a fixed period of time.

They are faithful Christians, and are also pilgrims on the way. They are trained and supported in their ministry, and continue to be ‘learners in the Kingdom of God’.

Footsloggers – 11May

Eighteen “Footsloggers” enjoyed a very pleasant five-mile walk starting at the Rea Bridge on the Gloucester and Sharpness canal at Quedgeley. The walk took the group along the canal tow path to Hempsted Lane and up to the village of Hempsted where we were able to appreciate the beautiful view stretching from Robinswood Hill round to May Hill.

Whilst in Hempsted we visited St Swithun’s Church which is mainly late 15th century with a 19th century extension to the nave and north vestry. We also passed Lady Well which is in the field beyond the churchyard. This is a structure thought to be 14th century, which was a place of pilgrimage as it is said that the Mother of Christ, the Virgin Mary, set foot there and a spring arose to quench her thirst.

We then descended Rea Lane to the flood plains of the River Severn and headed along the Glevum Way and Severn Way through some pretty meadowland back to Rea Bridge. Fourteen of us then made the short drive to the Pilot Inn on the banks of the canal in Hardwicke and enjoyed a well earned lunch.

The weather was overcast to start with but soon the skies cleared and the sun shone for the majority of the walk.

Reading Group

The next meeting of the Reading Group will take place at 7.30pm at Prestbury URC on Wednesday 19 August 2015.

The novel is ‘Elizabeth is Missing’ by Emma Healey, which won the Costa Book Award in 2014.

Maud, 90 years old, has Alzheimer’s or everyday senility. She wonders what has happened to her friend, Elizabeth, and tries to find out. However, she doesn’t know whether Elizabeth went missing last week, last year or 70 years ago!

New members always welcome. Contact [email protected] for more information.

Considering the Future at St Andrew’s

Those who were at St Andrew’s Morning Service on 7th June heard Maz ask two questions related to the future vision of St Andrew’s:

What is your personal vision for the building?

What are your ideas of how this could be achieved?

The Elders discussed the responses and presented feedback at the service on 14th June. There were two key responses: an overwhelming feeling that the church should be open as much as possible; and that the Lunch Club should continue monthly.

Making these things happen is our collective responsibility.

Considering the opening of the building first: if we could set up a team of ‘welcomers’ who would volunteer to be present from 10.30 to 1.30, say. The more volunteers we have, the less often anyone’s turn will come round. A once a month or occasional slot could be managed. With more volunteers, more days in the week could be covered. Such a person would be a friendly face for the hirers, would provide information for anyone dropping in and would provide ad hoc coffee etc as required.

If you also have this vision for St Andrew’s and would like to volunteer/find out more, then please contact Maz or one of the Elders.

Family Fun Day at The Church in Warden Hill

This event is being jointly organised by Cheltenham Network Church and The Church in Warden Hill, with the support of the Parish and Borough Councils.

Please Note

There will be no morning service in Warden Hill on July 26th due to the joint morning service at St Peter’s, Leckhampton. This will be the South Cheltenham Team Ministry farewell to our Team Rector, Paul Wilkinson. All of the Team congregations will be there together.

Gardening Club

‘May Hill Musings: Poets in and around the Forest of Dean’ by Pam Singer.

The talk was split into four parts:

John Masefield – The Poet Laureate, baptised in Preston Parish Church.

The Dymock Poets – Lascelles Abercrombie, Rupert Brooke, John Drinkwater, Robert Frost, Wilfred Gibson and Edward Thomas.

This was not a name they gave themselves, others conferred it on them and none of them lived in Dymock! There is a poets’ corner in St Mary’s Church, Dymock, with much memorabilia about the Dymock poets.

Rupert Brooke served in the First World War and died of a mosquito bite on his way to Gallipoli.

Ivor Gurney was born in Gloucester, served in the First World War, was gassed and suffered from mental problems for the rest his life.

F W Harvey, the Gloucestershire Poet Laureate and close friend of Ivor Gurney, led a bohemian lifestyle, trained as a solicitor, which he hated, but tended to give advice on this for virtually no fees.

Senior Club at Warden Hill

On 13th May we welcomed back David Lemon with a PowerPoint presentation about his walk in Africa. Last year we learnt about the first half of his trek to walk the length of the Zambezi. The total length is from the North West corner of Zambia to Mozambique, a total of 3,000 km, which he took 292 days to complete.

David started the second part of the walk on Easter Saturday. He sometimes had to force his way through dense undergrowth, and occasionally a hippo or elephant track could be used, very scary as the animals were in the vicinity. Villages were few and far between. The villagers live a Stone Age existence with mud and thatched huts [no windows].

The ladies do the majority of the work, often seen carrying 20 litres of water on their heads. One woman he met was 105 years old. She still did all her own farming work. She had had six children, three of whom had died and the other three were very old! David was welcomed in the villages, where they gave him their staple diet of maize meal and dried fish boiled together [not nice]. Other items eaten on the walk included roast rat, monkey, flying ants and hippo.

We saw amazing pictures of Africa including the Victoria Falls. David had been dreading reaching Mozambique due to the officialdom, but It was much easier than he had envisaged. However, he saw a country full of ruins, due to the wars.

When he reached the gorges he used a route last used by David Livingstone. Because the local people had never seen white men before, they ran away from him as they were terrified. At this point in the trek David became extremely ill and collapsed. He still had 400km to go. He was flown to Johannesburg where he was told he was suffering from dehydration, anaemia and malaria. He rested for three weeks and then set off again letting porters carry his food and his back pack [this was the first time he had had any help]. Suddenly David spotted palm trees. He knew he was near the coast. He had reached the Zambezi Delta. The swamp was hard going but they managed 25-30km a day; the end was in sight. David finished his tremendous walk three months short of his 70th birthday.

We meet every Wednesday afternoon at 2.15pm. Please join us for an afternoon of entertainment, friendship, refreshments and a raffle; you will be made very welcome.
