Sergeant at Arms, Wong Yoke Yong, President, Francis Goh, CC, Division Z Governor, Saddiqi, CC/CL. Secre-tary, Claire Seabrook and Treasurer, Chinnu Pal-anivelu were not present.

Division Governor Saddiqi, CC/CL, gave an inspirational installation address. He called for continued renewal of the leaders commitment and support for the members. He emphasized that “ties that bind” move a club forward as Toastmasters from all clubs can come together and help each other during meetings and events like this. He ended by wishing the new ExCo all the best!

Did you know...4 of our Executive Committee members renewed their commitment to the club for another term. They are President Francis, Vice-President of Membership, Claudia, Vice-President of Public Relations, Kelvin, Treasurer Chinnu. Their renewal ensures the club’s gradual leadership transition and support for the other ExCo members. Club Mentor and Club Advisor Wekie Tay, DTM and Chay Wen Liang, ACG/CL remain as additional mentors and support to the team and members.

New President’s Address : “What New Beginnings for this term?”

Our newly minted President Francis Goh, CC gave a motivating opening speech. He acknowledged past successes of building the club up to its current 32 members and achieving President’s Distinguished Award once again. He appreciated and thanked the previous Exco team’s great work and support as well as special thanks to mentor and advisors DTM Wekie Tay, Chay Wen Liang, ACG/CL and Lim Eng Hwa, ACS, ALB.

What does this new beginning have in store for the members? Francis shared his vision of continuing to develop the “Commitment, Collaboration and Cul-ture” of Telok Blangah Toastmasters. This year in par-ticular will be a year focusing on membership welfare and retainment. Programs to be introduced such as a “Mentoring” and a variety of “Mingle” sessions seek to engage current members better. A special note to the members of Telok Blangah Toastmasters Club:

This year, our club will focus on members development, welfare and retainment. Your progress will be the Exco’s priority this term. The Exco and I are highly commitment to serve you and urge you to move forward in your Toastmasters journey. There will be plenty of opportu-nities to do so.

The key is to get involved and commit to the activities we organize, especially Chapter Meetings. With high involvement, there will be greater and meaningful learning. Chapter Meetings are great platforms planned for you to achieve your communication and leadership goals.

Since there are many ways to be involved, you can take your pick as time permits. However, we stress that consistency is the key in learning. Thus, participating regularly as a speaker or ap-pointment holder during our Chapter Meetings is strongly encouraged.

We urge you to be involved in the following:

1. Speak at or/and attend Chapter Meetings - Volunteer to be a speaker (strongly encouraged) or enjoy the meeting whilst contributing by being an appointment holder (we’ll support and hand hold you don’t worry). Do so by courteously replying our VPE Stanley or your mentors when they email/sms you.

2. Speak at or/and attend Speechcraft - Speechcraft presents many more opportunities for members like you to speak or volunteer. We will be having Speechcraft 9 on 13 Sep to 11 Oct (every Thursday) and Speechcraft 10 in Feb/Mar in 2013. This gives you 8 extra speaking slots at least. You now need not just speak on the 4th Thursdays!

3. Follow up with your Mentors - Our flagship mentorship program pairs you up with experienced Toastmasters to support and motivate you to continue learning in Toastmasters. They will be meeting up with you at least 3 times this term. Take full advantage of them!

4. Join us at our Mix and Mingle Sessions - We will organize our 2 club outings (on 10 Nov 2012 and 11 May 2013 tentatively). Put those dates down in your calendar and mix, bond and get to know your fellow members better.

5. Join the Speech Contests - Participate as a contestant or appointment holder or just attend to see well prepared Speeches by our club members. You get to watch and learn from the interesting Speeches. It will be an eye-opener. The club contests are held on 23rd August 2012 (Humourous and Evaluation) and 28th February 2013 (International Speech and Table Topics). Watch out for emails from the Contest Organizers about 1 month before the contests.

To fully learn in Toastmasters, do take the initiative, time and effort to immerse yourself in and participate wholeheartedly in the various activities carefully planned for you. The Exco remains committed and we want you to contribute to learn too!

“Featured Project Speech” of the Month -

“Journey through the 5 Stages of Public Speaking in Toastmasters”

Advanced Project 1- The Goodwill Speech from the Public Relations Manual presented by Vice President of Membership Claudia Cheng, ACB/ALB

Vice-President of Membership, Claudia Cheng, ACB/ALB shared something that many of us, Toastmaster would go through or have gone through. She eloquently summed up the 5 stages of public speaking in a journey as a Toastmaster. This speech helps all Toastmasters to identify at which stage each of us are at and what we can look forward to. From speaking with notes to connecting with the audience, can you identify which stage of public speaking are you at?

Stage 1 - “It’s all about Words only” Fear of forgetting your speech. You bring up the script to be spoken word for word.Stage 2 - “Discovering You Can Talk”Focus on having logical flow and organise points using short notes and outlines instead of a whole script. Aim to speak long enough for the projectStage 3 - “Hello Audience!”You get more comfortable on stage. You are able to see the audience instead of just trying to remember what to present. You connecting better to audience by making eye contact.Stage 4 - “It’s All About the Audience”Instead of stringing sentences and words, think about what the audience really wants and make a speech out of that. Share a message by understanding the audience and their needs. Stage 5 - “Storytelling Mastery”Make them feel what you feel. Your speech truly touches the hearts, minds and soul of people.

“Speak Up!” with Telok Blangah Toastmasters Club

Especially for those NEW to Toastmasters Speechcraft 9 Workshop (Sep/Oct 2012) is BACK

by popular demand!Think back about the times when we have to get up on stage and present a speech or simply to reply an open "impromptu" question asked by an interviewer. Was it difficult? Did it feel uncom-fortable? Were the butterflies in your tummy fluttering non-stop?

Don't worry, all that is normal. Luckily there are ways to control those nervousness and build confidence in order to communicate better. The next question is "How to improve?"

Read a book? Yes, it helps to a certain extent, but without application, knowledge is useless.

Craft speeches? Yes, but writing and speaking it are two very different set of skills. Speaking it in front of an audience would help you overcome the fear of public speaking. On top of that, you will get a valuable feedback to know what you have done well and what the areas of improve-ment are.

Attend a workshop? Yes. You can learn from someone experienced who will guide you. You get to practise what you learnt, get immediate feedback and know specific ways on how you can improve. BINGO! This IS indeed one of the best ways to learn about communication...

Knowing that Workshops are one of the best ways to learn public speaking, Telok Blangah Toastmasters Club is dedicated to showing you "how to improve" through a workshop called SPEECHCRAFT.

In this workshop you will discover and learn the basics of public speaking and effective commu-nication through educational talks. Then, you will get a chance to apply what you learnt by get-ting a chance to be in front of an audience and deliver speeches.

This workshop is guaranteed to be highly interactive and fun, keeping you engaged while you learn in a supportive environment as you are guided by experienced Toastmasters.

Sounds like a good way to learn communication skills and public speaking? Give yourself a chance to learn and improve.

Why wait? Register Now! Email your name, contact number and address to [email protected]. (To view details such as dates and timing, refer to the previous page)

Telok Blangah TMC members, if you think your friends, family, colleagues and anyone you know who can benefit from Speechcraft and our other events, do pass this newsletter on to them.
