company was dead set against extending oil changes andthey were not very receptive to synthetic oil, either. We’vehad our run-ins over the years, including a few con-frontations at SAE meetings. Even so, all the officers in thiscompany drive GM vehicles. I congratulate them for doingthe right thing extending their drains well past 3,000-miles, conserving oil and reducing pollution.

Where does this leave the oil companies? Well, they willlikely continue promoting 3,000-mile drain intervals, evenin those vehicles equipped with the Oil Life System orsimilar devices. Can you imagine the sales they wouldlose if these devices were on every automobile and driversonly changed oil when the light came on? That’s whymost oil companies will likely continue to promote 3,000-mile drain intervals, even in the face of overwhelmingevidence that they are wasting resources, creating envi-ronmental problems, and misleading their customers.

Whether oil companies like it or not, extended drainintervals are here to stay. General Motors is eliminating spe-cific drain recommendations altogether and relying ontheir Oil Life System to alert motorists to change oil. Itwon’t be long before every vehicle manufacturer will followsuit to stay competitive.

So once again, this small but rapidly growing oil com-pany from Superior, Wisconsin, leads the giant lubricationindustry we compete in. Who would have thought whenwe introduced that first 100% Synthetic, 25,000-mile or oneyear Motor Oil back in the early seventies that every majoroil brand would eventually make or market a synthetic oil?We made “synthetic oil” the highest standard of quality inthe industry! Now they all have jumped on the band-wagon. I’m sure we will soon see other “extended drain”oils introduced in the future.

Who would have thought that an American auto man-ufacturer would not only extend their normal oil drain rec-ommendations to over double what they were back then, but actually make no recommendation at all? I gambledeverything I had and everything I could borrow on thebelief that synthetic oils were the lubricants of the futureand I was confident our oils would eventually gain uni-versal acceptance. AMSOIL also began the trend towardsextending drain intervals. We were the first to coin the term‘extended drain’ to describe our oils.

AMSOIL has been responsible for changing the lubri-cation industry. We established the superiority of syn-thetic lubricants, and proved the feasibility of greatlyextending drain intervals by producing oils good enoughto perform better and last longer than conventional oils. Iam proud of those accomplishments!

All one has to do is visit anyplace that sells oil to seewhat I mean. How many synthetic motor oils were inexistence when AMSOIL introduced its first oil? None. How many are on the shelves now! The same holds true ofsynthetic two-cycle oils, gear lubes, and many, many otherlubricants today that carry the word “synthetic” on thelabel. Before AMSOIL, none of them existed. So as thetrend towards longer drain intervals continues, tell yourcustomers who started it all and who they can continue toput their faith in . . . AMSOIL. The First in Synthetics!

A. J. “Al” AmatuzioPresident and CEO, AMSOIL INC.

On page twelve of this Action News is an interesting reportabout new oil change recommendations from GeneralMotors. It seems they are no longer specifying mileage tooil change recommendations for their vehicles. Instead, they have been installing and testing a patented Oil LifeSystem monitor that measures both operating conditionsand mileage to determine when the motor oil should bechanged. A light on the dash comes on to signal the needto change oil, often after 7,000 miles or more using con-ventional motor oils.

This concept is not altogether new. Some European carmanufacturers utilize similar systems to determine whenmotor oil should be changed. As I mentioned in a messageabout a year ago, Mercedes-Benz was sued for having asystem that tested the oil in their vehicles but not inform-ing their US customers that it was calibrated for syntheticoil. These customers were awarded $32-million because itwas determined that following the recommended changeintervals of 10,000 to 20,000-miles using conventionalpetroleum motor oil may have resulted in premature enginewear. Had they used synthetic motor oil, there would havebeen no lawsuit. What does that say about the protectionprovided by synthetic vs. conventional motor oils?

In one instance, GMs testing included operating a vehi-cle 16,000 miles before changing oil with no ill affects.Again, that was conventional oil. GMs Senior ProjectEngineer, Robert Stockwell, recently told Lubes n GreasesMagazine that Synthetic oil gets even longer drain intervals.AMSOIL Motor Oils are specifically formulated for extend-ing drains, and we are confident enough in our oils to spec-ify how many miles and for how long our oils may be usedright on most of our containers. You don’t need a light onthe dash to tell you when you should change our oils.

It’s good to see General Motors coming to the conclu-sion that engine oil does not need to be changed until itactually needs to be changed. There was a day when the

10 AMSOIL ACTION NEWS / JULY 2004

Oil shortages and high gasoline prices in the1970s piqued consumer interest in diesel pas-senger vehicles. Sales flourished, but quicklyfell as motorists found them to be unreliable, underpowered, loud and dirty. Most manu-facturers stopped marketing diesel passen-ger vehicles in the United States by the 1990s,but they flourished in Europe and currentlyaccount for 40 percent of European auto sales. Now, as gasoline prices continually increase, automakers are preparing for a diesel come-back in the United States.

Diesel technology has come a long waysince the 1970s. Not only are diesel vehiclessignificantly cleaner, they offer 30 to 40 percentimproved fuel efficiency over gasoline-pow-ered vehicles. Automakers hope this significantselling point will help them capitalize on thenew-found American interest in fuel efficienthybrid vehicles.

“Hybrids have proven that there is a marketfor high-mileage cars,” says Karl Brauer, editorin chief of automotive website Edmunds.com.Because diesel vehicles are less expensiveto manufacture, they are more affordable thantheir hybrid counterparts. According to J.D.Power and Associates, the consumer pre-mium is $4,000 for a hybrid vehicle and $2,500for a diesel vehicle.

Mercedes-Benz recently began marketing itsfirst diesel car for the American market since1999, the E320 CDI sedan. It utilizes a smartfuel-injection system that, according to prod-uct PR specialist Michelle Murad, cuts emissions by releasing the exact amount offuel required to power the engine’s cylinders. Older diesel engines were not as accurate, burning the extra fuel and producing excessemissions.

“The E320 CDI is 25 to 30 percent cleaneron average in carbon monoxide and carbondioxide emissions (compared to a Mercedes-Benz gasoline-powered sedan),” says Murad. It also provides increased torque. “It reallygives you that ‘back of the seat’ feeling whenyou’re leaving the traffic light.”

Despite emitting lower levels of carbonmonoxide and carbon dioxide emissions,

diesel vehicles release higher levels ofnitrogen oxides (NOx) than gasoline cars, which could present roadblocks inCalifornia, New York, Massachusetts,Connecticut and Vermont, five stateswhich have enacted emission standardsstricter than the federal government’s. It isuncertain whether diesels will be immedi-ately available in those states, but automanufacturers are confident all 50 stateswill be offering diesels by 2006, the yearfederally mandated clean diesel fuel hitsthe market.

At the 2004 New York InternationalAutomobile Show, Chrysler announced afall introduction for its Jeep Liberty diesel, the first midsize sport-utility diesel vehiclein the United States. Compared to thegasoline-powered Liberty, the common-rail diesel engine reduces CO2 emissionsby 20 percent and improves fuel efficiencyby 25 percent.

Volkswagen also announced the avail-ability of a new diesel vehicle at the autoshow, the Passat TDI, which features afuel injector for each of its four cylindersand is rated at 38 mpg highway and 27mpg city. Volkswagen already offers dieselengines with its Touareg, Golf, Jetta andNew Beetle models.

According to Dan Benjamin, analyst forAllied Business Intelligence (ABI), modernfuel injected diesel engines don’t have theproblems associated with diesel engines inthe past. He believes automakers mustwork to overcome long-held stereotypesthat diesel cars are noisy and dirty. ABIprojects annual diesel vehicle sales willgrow at a healthy pace.

AMSOIL offers a premium line of syn-thetic diesel oils that provide unmatchedfuel economy benefits and the ultimate inwear protection for extended drain inter-vals. Independent laboratory testing revealsthat AMSOIL Series 3000 Synthetic Heavy-Duty Diesel Oil, combined with AMSOILlubricants in the drivetrain, provides up to8.2 percent improved fuel efficiency.

AMSOIL ACTION NEWS / JULY 2004 11

New diesel fuel regulations implemented by the U.S.Environmental Protection Agency have engine man-ufacturers designing new engines to meet the nextdeadline for engine improvements required by thelaw.

However, some fleet operators worry about thecosts of the new technology.

According to a report by the EPA, the agency metwith more than 30 companies during an 18-monthperiod to compile information on the industry’sprogress toward meeting the new regulations.

All engine manufacturers reported they intend toadopt a two-step compliance strategy that allowsengine manufacturers to make incremental changes totheir current proven 2004 products for NOx control in2007, according to the report.

The United States Postal Service reports it willreplace its fleet of about 2,000 Class 8 tractors in 2005and that its normal eight-year replacement cycleenables the federally owned corporation to bypassthe EPA’s next two deadlines for additional emissionsrestrictions on heavy-duty diesel engines.

Diesels for fleet trucks such as USPS uses must meettightened emissions standards in 2007 and eventighter rules in 2010. Redesigned engines to meet therules are widely expected to make trucks cost more.

USPS official Wayne Corey said USPS is “less con-cerned with the technology than the price of thetechnology. We expect even higher premiums on theprice of that technology in 2007.”

Manufacturers plan to provide early prototypevehicles for selected customer testing beginning in2005, the EPA reported.

EPA Issues New RulesFor Off-Road Diesel Vehicles

Environmental Protection Agency head MikeLeavitt in May signed new regulations that would cutair pollution from tractors, bulldozers and other off-road diesel vehicles by more than 90 percent, accord-ing to EPA news.

"We're able to accomplish this in large part becauseof a masterful collaboration with engine and equip-ment manufacturers, the oil industry, state officials, and the public health and environmental communi-ties," Leavitt said.

The EPA had formally proposed the rules earlier, which mirror clean air rules that already exist fordiesel trucks and buses. They apply to more than650,000 vehicles.

Engine Makers Ready For NextStandards; USPS Faces Costs

AMSOIL Facts• AMSOIL Synthetic Motor Oils are extended

drain lubricants. Oil is changed less often, which dumps less oil into the environment.

A driver who travels 20,000 miles per year usingconventional oil and changes oil every 5,000 miles, dumps 20 quarts per year. Over the course of 10years, he dumps 200 quarts of motor oil. Thatsame driver using AMSOIL uses six quarts per year(one quart added with the annual filter change)and only uses 60 quarts of oil during 10 years.

• AMSOIL Synthetic Motor Oils don’t volatize(burn off) like conventional motor oils, sig-nificantly reducing emissions pollution.

Drivers using AMSOIL motor oil emit less thanhalf as much volatized oil into the environment asdrivers using conventional petroleum motor oil.

• AMSOIL synthetic lubricants reduce frictionand maintain viscosity for maximum fuel effi-ciency. Independent testing of Class 8 trucksshows that AMSOIL synthetics provide up to8.2 percent more miles-per-gallon than otherpopular lubricants.

A driver who travels 20,000 miles per year at 16miles per gallon spends $2,500 at $2 per gallon. Ifthat driver gets as much as a 5 percent improve-ment in gas mileage using AMSOIL motor oil, henow gets 16.80 miles per gallon for a cost of $2,380at $2 per gallon. He saves $120 per year and uses 60fewer gallons of fuel.

The federal agency said the cost of the rule changewould add around 7 cents to a gallon of the clean-burning diesel fuel, and around 1 percent to 3 percentto the purchase price of new equipment.

Under the rules, companies including CumminsInc. and Caterpillar Inc. will have to sell engines for thevehicles starting in 2008 that strip out more harmfulparticles in emissions, according to a news servicereport. Cummins and Caterpillar also manufacturetruck engines.

In addition, the EPA said fuel refiners would berequired to produce diesel fuel by 2012 that is 99 per-cent free of smog-causing nitrogen oxides.

Driving styles vary as well. The OLS allegedly calculatesall factors pertaining to both the engine and the driverand thereby makes its oil change recommendations.

According to GM senior project engineer RobertStockwell, who has been studying analyzed oil samplesfrom vehicles with OLS, “In all cases where the OLS sig-naled for an oil change it was before the oil was wornout.” And how long were the drain intervals? “Many ofthese samples,” said Stockwell, “were from vehicleswith greater than 10,000 miles on the oil, a few withmore than 14,000 miles and at least one with 16,000miles. These intervals were recorded in vehicles usingregular mineral oil. Synthetic oil gets even longer oilchange intervals.”

Let There Be LightLong before the issue of OLS and extended drains hittrade magazine editorial radar screens, AMSOIL beganto zero in on this opportunity for Dealers. The theme ofextended oil service life with AMSOIL synthetic motoroils has, of course, been a feature of the companyfrom the beginning.

Despite the clear environmental benefits of extendingdrain intervals, the major oil companies dug in theirheels. For more than three decades the message of reg-ular, frequent oil changes has been sold to consumersand the mechanics who service their vehicles. Millions,if not billions, of dollars have been spent on advertisingand training to reinforce this “change your oil every3,000 miles” mantra.

In February of 2003 AMSOIL published an articledirectly targeted to the impact oil change indicatorlights were having on drain intervals. “Oil MonitorsRevisited” (National Oil & Lube News, Feb. 2003) com-bined observation, internet research and first hand

Many motorists today are confused. For several yearsGeneral Motors, BMW and Mercedes-Benz have beeninstalling monitors on their dashboards that light up toindicate when it’s time to change oil. GM monitorshave frequently allowed motorists to drive 5,000 milesand as much as 7,000 miles or more before signalingthat it’s time to change oil. The Mercedes-Benz servicesystem indicates 10,000- to 20,000-mile oil changeintervals.

Naturally, this flies in the face of the 3,000-mile drainrecommendation that oil companies insist are necessaryto protect engines.

What’s a car owner to do?Petroleum oil companies have insisted that their oilneeds to be changed every 3000 miles, even for thesevehicles with the dashboard light. But the world’s largestautomaker, General Motors, states that oil change inter-vals should not be based on miles driven, but rather ondriving style. In a feature story titled “Supersize Me! GMmoves to extend drain intervals,” (May 2004 Lubes NGreases, vol. 10 issue 5) David McFall unveils the latestmove in GM’s strategic plan to cut loose drain intervals.

The GM solution is for motorists to depend on theirpatented Oil Life System (OLS). The owner’s manualsin today’s GM fleet no longer make specific mileage rec-ommendations at all. Instead, the GM Oil Life Systemanalyzes the engine’s operational data including tem-perature, revolutions and speed, to calculate the rate ofengine oil degradation and determine when an oil isnearing the end of its life. At this point a message on thedashboard signals that it is time to change oil.

Each OLS computer model is engine-specificbecause GM believes each engine behaves differentlyunder the various driving situations and conditions.

Now That Motorists Are Beginning to See the Light

oil companies to reduce the amount of anti-wear addi-tives in motor oil to keep emissions in check with theresult that oils cannot be counted on to last as long.

AMSOIL is already well positioned for both of theseperformance expectations. Testing is currently underwaywith new formulations that will keep AMSOIL ahead of thecurve, no matter how steep the expectations become. And for the 200 million cars currently in circulation today,AMSOIL synthetic motor oils remain the best value andoffer the best protection money can buy.

Ultimately, no matter what the oil light says, GM rec-ommends that if the light hasn’t gone on in one year, theoil and filter should be changed. A new idea? Not really. That is a message that was stamped on the first can ofAMZOIL Super Premium 100% Synthetic Motor Oil overthirty years ago. We were first then, and the competitionstill hasn’t figured us out.

AMSOIL ACTION NEWS / JULY 2004 13

comments from a GM powertrain authority to shedlight on the philosophy behind the Oil Life Sensor. At theheart of it all, GM does not believe in recommendeddrain intervals. GM believes in the oil sensor logarithm, developed by Dr. Shirley Schwartz and tested overmany millions of miles of service.

A month later, in March 2003, David McFall of LubesN Greases chided the oil industry for keeping drainintervals shackled at three thousand miles when theyknew that longer drain intervals were completely real-istic. In a column titled, “Drain Intervals: How LongMust We Wait?”, McFall held up AMSOIL as an oilcompany that was “unshackled.”

This year, McFall turned his attention to the OEMsthemselves, focusing on “the light,” that is, the GM oilchange indicator light. Clearly GM has unshackled its oilchange indicator and soon there will be 24 million morecars on the road relying on the Oil Life System.

The Demand For Better OilA second trend that is simultaneously occurring todayhas to do with emissions. For a number of years theautomotive and oil industries have been grappling withthe problem of meeting increasingly stringent emis-sions standards. The result of this governmental pres-sure on OEMs is that oil companies have been forcedto reduce additive content in order to increase catalystlife. Catalysts are the element in the catalytic converterthat reduce the bi-products of combustion in the inter-nal combustion engine.

There are trade-offs, however. First, when additivesthat provide wear protection are reduced, the result isthe potential of increased wear. Second, oil companiesmust wrestle with the matter of backward compatibil-ity. That is, when oil formulations are altered, can theyalso be retrofitted to older car models? Finally, today’ssmaller, hotter engines present new challenges as well.

As you would expect, AMSOIL synthetic motor oilsaddress nearly all of the problems brought on by thesechanges. The problem of increasingly hot engines issolved by synthetics because they reduce friction and, consequently, the primary by-product of friction, whichis heat. Even in the presence of heat they are oxidativelystable.

Dealer OpportunitiesAs GM progressively extends drain intervals and pro-motes the environmental benefits of extended drains, theAMSOIL message will become increasingly mainstreamand the 3,000-mile drain interval message will be furthereroded. Eventually every automaker will follow suit, notonly for environmental reasons but because consumersare busier than ever and frequent oil changes havealways been a hassle. Why, with vehicle menufacturersrecommending drain intervals longer than 3,000 miles, would customers trust an oil that an oil manufacturer rec-ommends be changed at 3,000 miles?

Ironically, the two needs of modern motor oils arecontradictory. On the one hand, motorists want oil to lastlonger and require fewer oil changes. On the otherhand, governmental pressure on OEMs is forcing motor

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

Q Now that General Motors has broken awayfrom any mileage recommendations, how are

AMSOIL Dealers to instruct their customers whenthe light goes on?

AAt the end of the day AMSOIL still recommends oil change intervals based on miles. Just as

General Motors has done extensive testing on theiralgorithm in order to feel confident in its recom-mendations, AMSOIL likewise has done extensivetesting regarding its motor oils. It should be notedthat GM set up its system based on typical con-ventional motor oil. Synthetic motor oil can go further,as GM has indicated.

QHow should Dealers respond when their cus-tomers see the “change oil” light go on?

AWhen customers are using AMSOIL 25,000-mile oils, AMSOIL recommends that the oil be con-

tinued in service and that Dealers help their cus-tomers learn how to reset the dashboard light. Thisis a simple matter of consulting the owner’s manualor contacting the local GM Dealership. If customershave installed XL-7500, they can feel confidentgoing 7500 miles or six months, whichever comesfirst. If the light goes on at 4500 miles, the sameinstructions apply as above: reset the light.

QWhat if they are using XL-7500 and the light does not go on for 11,000 miles or more?

AIf the oil light doesn’t come on until after 7,500miles, the customer can choose to change the

oil and filter or keep going until the change oil lightgoes on. AMSOIL XL-7500 is a premium oil that isfully capable of meeting the needs of GM cars inaccordance with their recommendations. You canalways feel safe using the XL-7500 oil until the lightcomes on.

AMSOIL/ Chaparral/ Honda served notice this AMA/THQ Supercross season that it’sthe premiere team of the series. The team narrowly missed winning an overall cham-pionship by a few points, but second and third isn’t bad at all when one considers mostof the talk, much of the press and many of the photos this season focused on theAMSOIL team.

Kevin Windham showed that a two-year layoff from racing didn’t diminish his skills.“K-Dub” delivered by posting 13 podiums including five stellar wins on his way to fin-ishing second overall.

Mike LaRocco’s legend grew. “The Rock” solidified his status as one of the best everas he won the hometown Indianapolis event, finished onthe podium 10 times and only once finished out of thetop five in route to ending the season third.

The AMSOIL 125cc Team had as many different faces as a watch factory. Injuries side-lined riders with each passing week. Still, solid finishes by Travis Preston, ChrisGosselaar, Ryan Mills, Billy Laninovich, Justin Brayton and Greg Schnell put the teamon the podium and among the top finishers each round.

The season in a microcosm was the last race of the year at Las Vegas. First theAMSOIL team stole the spotlight by entering into a special sponsorship deal with theHard Rock Hotel and Casino. Purple replaced the familiar red of the Honda bikes. Theteam’s assemblage of riders and crew wore variations of purple and the Hard Rock logo

on their clothing. The final touch was AMSOIL gra-ciously moving its title sponsor logo to the front fender. Throw in two special two-minutesegments for the television broadcast, a ton of photographs, media and thousands offans and you have the makings of minor hysteria.

The team then punctuated its preeminence by placing two on the podium from the250cc main event. Yep, Windham and LaRocco. The title may have gone to anotherrider, but the year went to Team AMSOIL. In fact, the AMSOIL/Chaparral/Honda/Factory Connection team was honored with the “2004 AMA/THQ SupercrossTeam of the Year.”

AMSOIL is at the top of the sport and regarded as the premiere synthetic lubricantof supercross with the premiere team of supercross.

Supercross Ends Superbly for AMSOIL

There will be no mistaking what company is the “Official Oil” of theAMA/Chevy U.S. Motocross Championships. Attend a race and AMSOILwill be there. Take a trip through the pits and again, AMSOIL will bethere. Flip on the television and AMSOIL will be there, too.

AMSOIL has moved into some elite company with its sponsorship ofwhat’s commonly called the “Outdoor Nationals.” The AMSOIL/ Chaparral/Honda team will give “The First in Synthetics” incredible exposure on the

track. Surrounding the track theAMSOIL logo will be significantly visible to spectators, photographers and a tele-vision audience through signage, tuff block/bail covers, foot after foot of“repeater” banners and Dealer representation.

That’s off the track. On the track AMSOIL is off and racing led by the irre-pressible Kevin Windham on a Honda CRF450Rin the 250cc class. The AMSOIL125cc riders include Ryan Mills, Chris Gosselaar, Greg Schnell and JoshGrant. They’ll be on four-stroke bikes, too. All will be using AMSOIL AMF10W-40 Motorcycle Engine Oil. Team leader Mike LaRocco is set to race twoto three motocross events this summer. His focus is already set on next year’ssupercross.

Make no mistake, AMSOIL will be everywhere this motocross season . . . espe-cially on the podium.

AMSOIL rider Ryan Mills passes one of themany AMSOIL banners around an outdoormotocross course.

Who has your back? AMSOIL does. AMSOILstands out on and off the track.
