Kudos to Gary Coleman and his team for conducting another

successful Tire Rack Street Survival school. Full details will be included in the September issue of Freude am Fahren. I must comment that Gary’s theme song must now be “Oh, I get by with a little help from my friends.” Due to the simultaneous opening of Racing Season at the Leduc Castrol track, and the loss of Josh our classroom instructor, Gary was under considerable stress staffing this year’s school. However, due to his unwavering perseverance, your Club’s volunteer ethic, and other folk pitching in, the school was fully equipped for the 18 registered students. Well done gang.

This year’s Father’s Day Drive introduced a new route. We tracked

through the countryside to Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump. Stops for comradery and other essentials were taken at Longview, Chain Lakes Provincial Park and Lundbreck Falls Provincial Park. Sixteen cars with well over 30 folk partook in the drive, including the centre of attention, a M850i X-drive shown off by Rada Saleh courtesy of BMW Gallery. This year’s Thelma and Louise car donated by Grant Keil of Calgary BMW was a stunning 330i X-drive with a Cognac interior. We will have to hold a contest to see which of Janice and Heather is Thelma, or Louise; I couldn’t get a straight answer from either lady.

The Father’s Day Drive has for many years been an enjoyable trip

through the Highwood Pass experiencing the Foothills and Rockies at their finest. We are embarking on a plan to provide some variety to this event with a catalogue of three or four drives to cycle through. This year’s jaunt to Head Smashed In was the first of these new ventures. I encourage your feedback and your suggestions for other routes that you enjoy and would like to share with your fellow drivers.

Dominic Young, President of Rocky Mountain Motorsports, has

advised us that this August will see the official Ground Breaking for their race track, located next to the Carstairs overpass of Highway 2. With major earthworks to be completed this year, car-ready pavement is anticipated for late Spring 2020. Discounted memberships will still be available up to the Ground Breaking with a reducing sliding-scale discount during early construction phases. I can hardly wait for a local HPDE experience to replace the annual pilgrimage to Denver and Brainerd.

Don’t forget to keep open August 25th for the BMWCSA Annual

BBQ: beef, chicken and/or vegi BBQ. Lots of spruced up Bimmers to view, including Crowd Favourite prizes. This year the Silent Auction of goodies from our Sponsors will fund our ongoing Street Survival Schools. Remember that the BBQ is FREE to all Club Members and their live-in family members. Details and registration link are on our Web Page: https://www.bmwcsa.ca/event/2019-bmwcsa-annual-bbq/. (Note that registrations close on August 18, 2019 at 11:00 PM and late registrations will not be accepted.) See you there!

Our Club succeeds because its members step forward.

Thank you all!

I wish you the Joy of your BMW! Greg Walsh, President

Travels

Summer Time and the road trips are easy! We are always looking for an interesting shots or ideas about

destinations, roads, cars and the intrepid traveller. Here are shots of Bryce Canyon and roads through Zion National Park in Utah taken this spring – perhaps a teaser for a proposed Club Tour through the geological marvels. If you want to share, please send that postcard to [email protected]

Happy Motoring!

Zion - the 12-mile drive on the main road is spectacular

Bryce Canyon - have to pick your time - in April most of the park roads

were under 6 feet of snow!

ZF W l F -crash

External Side Airbag System

Airbag technology has a new development, thanks to ZF, a major

automotive parts supplier that is relatively unfamiliar outside automotive-manufacturing circles. Their advanced airbag system would inflate just before a car is about to get T-boned, preventing serious injury. ZF is calling it the “world’s first pre-crash external side airbag system,” although companies like Volvo have been tinkering with the technology on and off. ZF claims that it is "currently the only company to provide the full spectrum of integrated vehicle safety technology – from sensor systems, algorithms, and control units to active and passive actuators."

Side impact collisions are among the most dangerous type of road traffic accidents, accounting for nearly 700 deaths per year and nearly a third of all occupant fatalities on German roads. In a side impact collision, the occupants on the side of the impact are at particular risk of serious injuries in the chest area if the passenger cabin is severely deformed.

The ZF pre-crash safety system can reduce the penetration of the intruding vehicle by up to 30 percent, helping to significantly reduce the occupants’ risk of injury.

The ZF new pre-crash safety system prototype uses an external side airbag deployed milliseconds before a collision. It provides an additional lateral crumple zone, which can help save lives and reduce occupant injury severity by up to 40 percent. To make this possible, ZF has networked the airbags to the vehicle’s sensor systems and developed algorithms that are capable of determining if a crash is imminent and decide whether or not to deploy the airbag.

From Recognition to Deployment in the Blink of an Eye

The biggest challenge in the development of this system was

reliably recognizing an unavoidable collision and deploying the external side airbag before the collision takes place. The system has approximately 150 milliseconds to make the decision to deploy the airbag and fill it – roughly the amount of time it takes a person to blink.

The vehicles sensors first have to identify a viable threat. This is

possible with connected cameras, radar and lidar (radar that uses pulsed lasers to determine range). Algorithms within the system software decide whether the threat is real and, if so, the system ignites the airbag inflators. The airbag has a capacity of 290 to 400 liters (about five to eight times the volume of a normal airbag). The exploding airbag expands upwards from the side sill to form an additional crumple zone between the A and C pillars.

The predictive information about an unavoidable collision also helps

to further improve the effectiveness of established standard safety technology. For example, the ACR8 Active Control Retractor can warn the occupants or help secure them in a safe position in the critical fractions of a second before the collision. ZF Friedrichshafen AG is a global technology company and supplies systems for passenger cars, commercial vehicles, and industrial technology. With its comprehensive technology portfolio, the company offers integrated solutions for established vehicle manufacturers, mobility providers, and start-up companies in the fields of transportation and mobility. Digital networking and automation is a focal point of further development of ZF systems. ZF allows vehicles to see, think, and act. Source: ZF Friedrichshafen AG June 5, 2019 Press Release

BMW World

BMW builds the best hybrid:

International Engine of the Year award.

The BMW i8 plug-in hybrid won the world’s most important Engine and Powertrain Award for the fifth consecutive year at the 21st edition of the International Engine of the Year competition. 70 motoring journalists from 31 countries were the judges. The BMW powertrain scored 233 points with the nearest competitor at only 138 points.

The latest version of the BMW i8 combines sports-car performance with fuel economy worthy of a compact model. Its three-cylinder combustion engine delivers 170 kW/231 hp to the rear wheels. The electric motor, whose output has now been upped to 105 kW/143 hp, draws its energy from a lithium-ion battery – which can be charged from a conventional domestic power socket – and sends its power to the front axle.

This model-specific plug-in-hybrid system enables an all-electric

range of up to 55 kilometres (34 miles) in the EU test cycle. The combined effect of the electric motor powering the front wheels and the combustion engine at the rear axle creates an all-wheel-drive system that keeps the car glued to the road and comes into its own when accelerating hard or powering through corners.

The sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) takes just 4.4 seconds yet

combined fuel consumption – as calculated in the EU test cycle for plug-in hybrid vehicles – stands at 2.0 liters per 100 kilometers (141.2 mpg imp), plus 14.5 kWh of electrical energy. This equates to CO2 emissions of 46 grams per kilometer.

BMW announced in June that it has developed a new set of smart glasses for its dealership technicians. The TSARAVision Smart Glasses, named after BMW's new online case-reporting system TSARA, can be used to speed up diagnostic and repair procedures by offering up everything a tech needs without having to thumb through physical manuals or pick up a phone.

The glasses, which don't really resemble glasses in the traditional

sense, have the ability to put step-by-step instructions or technical drawings right in front of a technician's eyes. The glasses can also take screenshots, and they're capable of zooming in on photos to get a little extra detail when necessary.

In the event a problem proves too tricky, a tech can also uses the

smart glasses to phone home to Germany, where engineers can get a live look at the problem to better work through it. If the tech needs to open up a new document, he or she can do so with just their voice, keeping hands free for the actual nitty-gritty work.

BMW says this new tech should be at all BMW dealers by June. We

will have to ask our Calgary Dealers for a demo!

Electric Vehicles are attracting

High Registration Fees

While some of the world is handing out subsidies for electric vehicles (EV), in nearly half of US states, driving a battery-powered car requires paying additional fees.

To date, 24 states have imposed special fees on electric vehicles

mainly in the form of higher registration fees that range from $ 200 to as high as $1000 per year. Illinois legislator is proposing $1,000 annual registration fee.

Now, even some states with incentives—like California, home to

roughly half of all electric cars in the country—are turning to fees as way to ensure that electric drivers pay their fair share to maintain roads and bridges. It shows just how much governments like to tax while promoting incentives in the same breath.

Although sales are rising, EVs still represent a small fraction of the

vehicles on the roads. By the end of 2018, 565,032 EVs were registered in the United States. California, the headquarters and biggest market for Tesla Inc., had 273,656. No other state has crossed the 100,000 mark.

Our driving route first takes us east through Hanover to stay in the quiet and pretty town of Goslar, a UNESCO World Heritage town, central to many other historical and picturesque areas. We will be stationed there for three nights to take short day trips into the surrounding countryside, visit the VW Autostadt in Wolfsburg, drop by the historical university town of Gottingen, or hike in the nearby Harz Mountains. Wernigerode, another picture-perfect, fairytale town in the Harz region, is only an hour away.

Dresden will be home for the next three nights. This city, while suffering from extensive bombing during the latter part of World War 2, has now been fully rebuilt (predominantly with British money). The former home of Saxon kings, Dresden has plenty of interesting sites that reflect the grandeur of their reign. The Fürstenzug mural (Procession of Princes), Zwinger Palace, and the Grünes Gewölbe (Green Vault) are some of the notable highlights.

Possible day-trips from Dresden include Leipzig to visit the Porsche and BMW factories, or east 45 minutes by car or riverboat to Bastei, the awe-inspiring rock towers in Saxon Switzerland.

Northern Germany Tour 2020

Northern Germany 2020 – the travel bug really bit some of the Swiss tourers! Almost immediately after we came back from Switzerland 2018, some of the tour members started thinking of another tour. It’s now official; 2020 will be Northern Germany! Let’s begin with the itinerary for the club portion of the trip. (Note that these dates may change by a day or two when finalized.)

Day Dates Location

1, 2, 3 September 19 to 21 Amsterdam, Netherlands 4, 5, 6 September 22 to 24 Goslar, Germany 7, 8, 9 September 25 to 27 Dresden, Germany 10, 11, 12 September 28 to 30 Berlin, Germany 13, 14 October 1 to 2 Schwerin, Germany 15 October 3 Bad Zwischenahn, Germany 16 October 4 Amsterdam, Netherlands

Our journey will start in Amsterdam where we will pick up our cars

and stay for a few days to overcome jet lag and enjoy this famous city’s sights and history. Amsterdam was chosen as the starting point of this circuit tour for its direct flights from Calgary, for being a great place to visit in its own right, and for the presence of a large SIXT dealership right at the airport. SIXT is our preferred European rental company because they have guaranteed BMWs for us on the previous two European trips. We expect they will be able to do so again in Amsterdam. As we get closer to the travel date, we will collect the vehicle preferences of the participants and submit a booking order. Each participant will be responsible for paying for their own car.

Joy of Driving

*Joy of Driving 10

We’ve chosen these stops for a combination of driving length (each leg is about 2½ hours, the longest being 5 hours) as well as scenery and things to do. As with our previous tours, we aim to stay in interesting tourist locations at average priced hotels that include breakfast and, especially, parking for our cars (which can be a challenge in the crowded, compact European towns and cities). By popular request from past trips, on 5 out of our 7 stops we will stay for several days in a central town where we can branch out to see various surrounding sights and historical venues.

All of our tours are done on a non-profit basis by volunteers. Our

preliminary budget points to somewhere between CAD $5,800 to CAD $6,200 per car for the club portion (all hotels and the group meals, for two people), with the usual caveat that there will be either a cash call or a refund depending on final costs. We tend to overestimate the exchange rate, as this is usually the largest fluctuation. We will firm up the club budget by October. Airfare, car rental, meals (other than 4 group meals) and incidentals are not part of the group booking and are up to the individual.

While we have just started this tour, we already have several

members expressing interest at our last CC&C, so expect this will be another well attended tour. These types of trips work best with a moderately sized group, so we plan to limit the number to between 10 and 15 cars.

We will ask for formal non-binding expressions of interest in July

2019 and will hold a presentation in early October when we should have most of the main items locked down. We will need commitments by the end of October 2019, with a 50% deposit. The balance will be due by May 31, 2020. Both payments are non-refundable. We would remind all that this is consistent with travel industry practise for cruises and tours and is necessary for the volunteer organizers to make and pre-pay commitments. It is up to the participant to arrange trip cancellation and medical insurance or to find a replacement for their seat.

Our travel group will also be considering future trips to Spain and to

the Canyon lands of Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico. We may need a geologist or two as educational guides since we will be passing through literal cross sections of geological history. Stay tuned.

Please contact Wallace Chow at [email protected] or Gerard

Mercier at [email protected] for either additional information or to register. Article by Wallace Chow

Continued from page 10 Then we travel on to Berlin, capital of Germany and one of the

hippest and funkiest cities in Europe. To accommodate the number of cars in our group, we plan to stay in the nearby resort town of Potsdam with its fabulous gardens and palaces.

The return leg will see us pass near the northern German coast with a chance to stop in Schwerin to visit its spectacular palace.

Our last stop before returning to Amsterdam will be at Bad Zwischenahn, a lakeside resort just 70 km from the North Sea. This will allow us to visit Papenburg, where they build some of the largest ships in the world (we will look at arranging a factory tour).
