    JUMP MAG

    Welcome friends,

So here we are in the position of waving goodbye to yetanother year. Its denitely been an interesting one.

As far as this magazine goes, weve racked upplenty of airmiles during our travels and have beenblessed to have met many amazing people along the

way. This year weve reached out to Mexico, Austria,Sweden, China, Germany, Russia, France, Denmarkand Latvia but were still only scratching the surface, asthere are still so many more locations that were itchingto hit. Once we roll over into 2011, well be doing ourbest to step on the gas and provide much more spotlightattention for a wide variety of athletes, teams andscenes.

When you travel, you really do get a sense of how bigthe World really is and how small we all are in the

grand scheme of things. For all of us involved in thishuge PK/FR community, we need to realise how luckywe are to have the the power of the internet at ourdisposal to help bring us all together. With just a fewtaps on the keyboard you can plug into a globalcommunity that is packed to the brim with content.Sure, theres some shit out there but on the whole, the positives far outweigh the negatives.

Before I get all sentimental and start sobbing (as if), Ijust want to say a big thank you. Ive said it before andIll reiterate now....here at UF, we really are so

appreciative of the continued support we receive fromeveryone. For as long as were able to hustle, Ipromise that well keep on keeping on....

Wherever you are in the World right now, we wish youall the best for Christmas but before you get stuck intothe festive spirit, please spare a thought for MatinMesbah, a member of our community from Iran, whowas involved in a fatal car accident just before his 20thbirthday. R.I.P.

    We Multiply....Ez (Editor)

    MEXICO RT NACIONAL

Every year during the rstfew days of December,Mexico City receives a lot oftraceurs, from different partsof Mexico with one goal inmind, To be a part of theReunin Nacional de

Traceurs (The NationalJam). This means 2 daysof meetings to learn/teachsomething about parkour andto make new friends. But ofcourse the most importantthing is always to have fun.

This Jam was organised byUrban Runners which was

founded by Daer Sanchez andtwo of its members, RockoRaspados Rovira and

Mexico to take part in theevent. It provides theMexican Parkour community

with the opportunity to shareand learn something aboutthem. These invitations arenow becoming a tradition

for the National Jam held inMxico City.

This year the specially invitedinternational guests were UF

All Star athlete, SaschaCionn Hauser from

Austria and Jason Paul fromGermany. For us, it wasamazing to have these guys

with us at the Jam becausethey had a lot of experience toshare with everyone.

Eduardo Sweet Chavez , whoare all also a representativesof Urban Freeows UF AllStar Team.

The site chosen this year forthis Jam was the the Skate

Park La Fuente which islocated in the eastern partof the city on the grounds ofCiudad Deportiva (SportCity). This Sport City has 2.5acres with free access and

you can practice all kinds ofsports there.

    Since two years ago Urban

During the Jam they helpedto coach the rookies in orderto improve their skills andtheir movements. This helpeda lot of the rookies to be moremotivated to continue theirtraining and to better

    understand the philosophy ofParkour.

This gathering showed usthat now the annual event isturning out to be a fullyinternational one, becauseaside from our German and

Austrian guests, we wereblessed to have the

attendance of an Americantraceur, Michael Mees, who isa member of the SF Parkour

sits ups and some cardiodrills in order so get everyoneready for all the jumping.

After this, all the people weredivided into teams anddistributed to all the 7 spotsof the skate park. The general

idea was to session for aboutfteen minutes in one spotdoing all kind of movementsand tricks and after that they

    would move to another spot.

The training of the rst blockended by 1pm, this meantthat they were training foralmost 3 hours, and all

participants in attendanceshowed great levels ofstrength and stamina during

group based in San Francisco,California. It was a realpleasure to welcome him.

The rst day of the Jamstarted around 9 oclock,

    when the rst block of

traceurs started to arrive atthe skate park. Usually thisrst group is made up ofthe people who dont live inMxico City or in thesuburbs. The time for the jamto ofcially start was 10amand when it did, the warm up

was taken by Frix and Dudek.Frix started with some

exercises for the joints andthen Dudek continued byputting in some push-ups,

By 6pm in the evening therst day of the Jam ended.Everybody was very tired butalso very happy and anxiousto attend the following dayfor the conference to be given

    by Sascha and Jason. After

that they would be able toenjoy the session of freestyletraining.

The second day of the Jamstarted with the conference

where all the participantswere able to ask Sascha andJason tlots of hings aboutthem and their experiences

in Parkour. It started at 10amand ended at almost around12pm.

coherent way and Sascha wasjust mumbling like a fool.By 3pm the second block ofparticipants were ready tostart their rst day of theJam, so again Frix started

    with the warm up exercises

for the joints but he wasnow joined by Armand, whohelped him with the other

warm up exercises toprepared them for the hard

work that was yet to come.

Again the people weredivided into groups and eachgroup spent fteen minutes

in each spot before theymoved onto another spot tosession all the other areas.

all this time. But the mostimportant thing of all wasthat they were very happy to

be mixing and moving withtheir peers.

After this we had a break for

lunch, relax and also laughand joke around together. Then out of nowhere Jasonand Sascha started toimitate (in Spanish) the

voices of the subwayvendors by taking some of theT-shirts designed by Frodo(Urban Runners member)that were on sale. The

funniest part was that onlyJason was using his limitedknowledge of Spanish in a

Everybody present was veryattentive to the answers given

    by the guys.

After this conference it wastime for some gifts from thesponsors, like caps, Tee shirts

and some sweatbands thatwere given away to all thetraceurs. Then it was time to

jump like crazy because thisis when the freestyle opentraining session started. It

was similar to the previ-ous day in the way everyoneformed a line to wait theirturn to pass trough theobstacles. The onlydifference this time was thatthey could stay in the samespot for as long as they liked.

of the fact that everyone wasin the zone and enjoying thefree training. So lmedeverything in order to makean ofcial event video ofthe jam. During this part ofthe Jam I was content with

taking pictures, recordingsome video clips and jokingaround with everybody there.I even found time to put thecamera aside and did a little

bit of training with all theguys myself.

But as usual everything thathas a beginning also hasand end and this great daydrew to an end by 6.30 in theevening. Everybody was verytired but very happy because

Typically during the secondday of these jams, people feltmore secure and start beingmore creative in theirmovements. In this case, theyall began to session hard andthis saw some awesome tricks

and jumps being pulled, thatamazed everybody. It was a spot made up of twotall boxes and a small ramp,

where Rocko, Frix, Sascha,Daer and Jason were tryingto do a kong to cat leap andkong to precision. Rocko

was the rst one that almostachieved the kong toprecision, and after himJason tried the same comboand he did it. Also during thisday Josefo took advantage

they had a great weekendat an awesome event.

In summary this Jam was avery successful one, becausethe organisation for this yearhad improve massivelycompared to the previousone. Also, the number ofparticipants taking part wasmuch higher than last yearand this made theatmosphere really special.

Another thing to point out isthat more females wereparticipating and this was sorefreshing to see. Those who

    were there last year had

improved their levelmassively and theirenthusiasm will hopefully

contributed towards makingit such a special event. Therereally are so many individualsto say thanks to and Ill try tolist a few in a minute, but myparting message is quitesimply to say thatEVERYONE is welcome tocome to Mexico and taste apiece of our amazingcommunity.

We love meeting new peopleand we have some great spotsto train at. We will promiseto introduce everyone to the

way of the Raspados whichwill change the way you look

    at life forever.

    Peace out.

    encourage more girls to getinvolved.

Were already lookingforward to next years Jamand plan to make it even

better than this one. We arehoping to be able to invitemore international guests toexperience what Mexico hasto offer and to help give ourcommunity an upward pushand promote our healthylifestyle to a wider audience.

Pink is where its at thismonth with Stella PK, thefounder and president ofPinkParkour, a new organisationset up to cater for femalepractitioners in France.

Having already touched basewith Stella during theSessionInternationale(Paris) eventwe staged in the summer, wehad intended to hook up againearlier to do this piece but otherprojects kept getting in the way.

Eventually we agreed to riskdoing it in the winter and withsnow being predicted for theweekend we were there, it reallywas a touch and go situation.Luckily, we were gifted with aclear day and even though itwas bitterly cold, we met for acatch up at Bercy during a grouptraining session....

move is very particular. I didntlike this aspect so much.

So lets go back to your rsttraining session. How was it andwhat did you do?Stella: I tried to runup a wall but it was very hard.

With a little help from my friendI found that I could do it.

Was your friend also at beginnerlevel?Stella: Yes and in the beginningwe trained a lot together butafter a while I met many morepeople and we started to train ina bigger group with moreexperienced people.

With guys they can rely onphysical strength to powerthrough certain moves. Having aslighter frame, did you nd anytechniques particularly difcultto learn?

Stella: For me, the kong vaultand cat leap were very difcult.Anything where arm strength isneeded, presents a realchallenge. Especially when youare just a beginner.

Are you able to do kong vaults

now?Stella: Not so well. This is anarea I need to work on and Imreally trying to improve mytechnique, so I repeat it a lot, alot, a lot, a lot!

How often to you train?Stella: I train 3 times per weekfor 2 to 3 hours per session.Right now my life is very busy

with studying and I also work,so nding time to train issometimes difcult.

Out of all the techniques in yourrepertoire, which is your fave?

Hi Stella, full name please?Stella: My full name is StellaDurand.

From where?Stella: Born and raised in Paris

Which part of Paris is called

    home?Stella: I live in the 10th District.

How young old you right now?Stella: Im 22 years old.

    Still just a baby then.Stella: Yeah .

How long have you been aParkour practitioner?

Stella: I have been practising theart of Parkour for 5 years.

Where did you rst see Parkour?Stella: I saw it in the rstDistrict 13 movie.

And what led to you actuallypractising?Stella: I had a friend who wasalready practising. He said that Ishould come to watch him train,

so I did and after this I begantoo.

What was it about Parkour thatappealed to you so much?Stella: Quite simply the sense offreedom it gives.

When you began, did you stepup with a background in anyother sport?

Stella: Yes, I used to dogymnastics and I was also aswimmer.

Has your gymnasticsbackground helped you withyour Parkour?Stella: In the physical side, yes. But apart from that, not somuch.

Is this because of the rigidnature of gymnastics in thesense that you have to break oldhabits?Stella: Yes, gymnastics is verystrict and the way you have to

Stella: I like the lazy vault andthe dash vault. With the lazyvault I like this because it can bedone at speed and lookseffortless.

    And your least favouritetechnique?

Stella: The kong vault .Have you been unlucky enoughto suffer any injuries duringyour 5 years in Parkour?Stella: Sadly, yes. I have hada wrist injury and right now Ihave a tendon problem in myachilles area that I cannot shake.

Has this been frustrating to deal

with?Stella: Yes, it has caused memany problems and Ive had thisfor 10 months now so I can onlytrain very lightly.

Ouch, Im sure that everyonereading this will understandwhat youre going through. Ok,when you do train, do you movewith the guys?Stella: Yes it is a benet but also

it is good to take the time totrain with just the girls.

Do you ever watch the guysmove and see them doing thingsthat you wish you were able todo?Stella: Yeah, mainly the bigvaults where strength is used.

Seeing as you dont possess the

raw power of your malecounterparts, how do you adaptyour game to overcomeobstacles?Stella: Us girls need to workmore on technique, uidity andsense of touch.

Are there any females currentlyin the scene who you look to ashaving a good combination of

the above?Stella: Liv from the UK has agood level but I dont knowif she is still active? There isanother girl from the UK calledHollie that I like and Kat from

I have beenpractising theart of Parkourfor 5 years

    Parkour?Stella: Simple, to federate andmotivate.

Nice. How many girls areinvolved right now?Stella: About 10 of us aredirectly involved right now and

we meet up to train each month. There are also many other girlswanting to get involved.

Why do you think that therearent that many girls involvedin Parkour compared to theamount of guys?Stella: Maybe from the outside,Parkour appears to be adangerous sport but anyone who

hasnt actually tried it willalways have that opinion. I thinkmore girls need to try it rst. Ithink that they will be pleasantlysurprised.

When I was here in the

summer I noticed that yourgroup is a really tight knit one.Does that friendship extendoutside of training together?Stella: Yes, we often socialisetogether too.

    Talking about the social

networking side of things, howimportant is the internet to you?Stella: Well Facebook is whereour community is based andfor me, I think it is the mainmeeting place for practitionersof tomorrow. I think it is veryimportant for Pink Parkour tohave a Facebook presence.

Any plans to launch a fully

edged Pink Parkour website?Stella: Maybe as thingsprogress.

How about Youtube?Stella: We dont have a channel

Mexico has a really good level.Oh, and theres Silex fromCanada who is really good.

Can you please tell us a little bitabout the organisation youverecently set up called PinkParkour?

Stella: This was set up to helpdevelop female Parkour inFrance. We will stage monthlytraining sessions and help tomotivate more girls to take part.

Is the organisation open tofemales regardless of where theyare in the world, or is itexclusive to Frenchpractitioners?

Stella: Yes our Facebook page isopen to everyone but fortraining, it is impossible for usto do it outside of France rightnow.

I was referring more to yourpage being receptive to femalevisitors from all around theworld as a central hook up placeto share knowledge, postpictures and videos.

Stella: Ah, yes. Everybody iswelcome but for this year I thinkit is more important to build thefoundations so the focus is moreon France now.

Why did you choose PinkParkour name?Stella: Pink Parkouris fun and representative offemales.

I hear you but most teenagersare going to think of one thingwhen the word Pink ismentioned. Was the doubleentendre intentional?Stella: NO!!!!

Ok understood. To clear up anyconfusion though, its nothingto do with lesbian power either,

is it?Stella: No!! It is very different.

Ok joking aside, what are themain ambitions of Pink

right now but maybe soon wewill set one up.

Right now Parkour is obviouslya lifestyle choice for you butdo you have any aspirations tobecome a professional?Stella: For me, to develop

Parkour is the most importantthing. Right now there aremany associations and groupsin France but I dont know ifthe community really wants todevelop, so Im not sure if Ill beable to turn what is my hobbyinto a professional thing?

Would you like to if you could?Stella: Yeah, sure. I did do a

photography project once forNikon with Gravity Style.

Since setting up Pink Parkour, have you been contacted bymany people from around theworld?Stella: The interest in the pagehas been really good but mypersonal Facebook prole is notset to be open to everyone, soif you search for my name you

wont be able to nd it tomessage me.

Isnt that a bit redundant? If youwant to develop, you need toeither open up or appoint somemoderators.Stella: Yes Iunderstand. I think I need tochange the settings.

Your boyfriend Thomas, trainswith you too, right?Stella: Yes, he helped me set upPink Parkour and hes also aninstructor.

Did you guys meet throughParkour?Stella: Yes .

    How long has Thomas been

doing Parkour?Stella: I think hes been doing itfor 6 or 7 years.

Does he actively encourage youwith your training?

I think it is veryimportant for PinkParkour to have a

    Facebook presence

Parkour. I hope to starttravelling more for Parkourrelated projects soon.If you could go to any country inthe world to train, where wouldit be?Stella: England for sure and

    maybe Germany too.

Is it frustrating for you beingFrench to see that even thoughParkour started in France, itisnt a major player in the sceneas far as establishedcommunities are concerned?Stella: Yes it is very frustrating. In France we have a mentalityproblem where a lot of people

have closed minds. In the past, the vibe was reallynegative but I have to say thatfrom my own personal

experiences here, it seems to begetting much better. The newbreed of practitioner seemsmuch more receptive to therebeing a community that existsoutside of France. In the olddays, there were too manypeople who wanted to keepeverything guarded and itbackred because communities

sprung up and developedwithout them.Stella: Sadly that is true. I hopethat one day everyone can worktogether and not be so closed offfrom sharing and learning.

Have you ever been to Lisses topay homage to the birth place?Stella: Ive been 2 or 3 times. The rst time was so cool but

the others not so much, becausethe police have started arrestingpeople and are stopping anyonefrom jumping about. Its a verycomplicated situation therenow.

Stella: Yes he supports mebut weve been together for 9months and Ive been injuredfor 10 months, so he hasnt everseen me train at 100%.

Right now its getting cold herein Paris. Do you ever nd it hard

to motivate yourself to trainduring the winter?Stella: Sometimes. Its reallyhard to motivate the other girlsin the winter but I think its agood time because you get to seethe ones who are reallydedicated. These are the oneswho will be here in thesummer too and the ones whowill improve the most.

How about you?Stella: Yeah its hard but whenI began training it was in thewinter so Ive been through it. Ithink as a practitioner it is reallyimportant to train through allthe seasons.

Do you ever get tempted to traininside?Stella: I train indoors and

outside. When I train inside I doso with Charles and Malik fromGravity Style.

Are you taking part in any othersport right now to supplementyour Parkour training?Stella: Nothing, its justParkour.

    Do you eat healthily?

Stella: No it is verycomplicated because Im verybusy with work and studyingand cant always nd time toprepare something healthy toeat. I do try though .Paris has a selection of greatspots to train at. Which is yourfavourite?Stella: La Defense because there

is so much to do in one smallarea. It is also perfect for bothbeginners and the advanced.

Are you well travelled?Stella: Yes but none of it was for

Whats your vision of Parkour in5 years time, do you think it willcontinue to grow?Stella: Yes because it isnt in todo Parkour. Its a healthylifestyle and more and morepeople will want to get involved.

What is your opinion ofFreerunning?Stella: I like it but for me,Parkour is the way. If Im reallyhonest, Im afraid to doacrobatics outside. It scares me.

What is your view on the politicsinvolved in Parkour?Stella: Its too restrictive but Ithink it will change for the

better eventually. What kind of music is on youriPod right now?Stella: I listen to all kinds ofmusic so its a mix of everything.Favourite brands?Stella: For sports I like Adidasbecause my father is able to getdiscounts on their clothing andI like their range of colours. For

fashion, I dont have a favourite.

Being a female, Im guessing youhave a fond affection for shoes. If you do, does this apply to yourtrainers and if yes, how manypairs do you have?Stella: No I only have4 pairs.

    Disappointing! Ok, any hobbies

like watching lms or reading?Stella: I like lms but cannotthink of a favourite. Forreading I like fantasy stuff likeHarry Potter.

Hypothetically speaking, letssay you had to spend a week insolitary connement but couldtake 3 items with you, whatwould you take?

Stella: Denitely my iPod.ErmId also take my trainersand a book.

Do you have any role models inyour life outside of Parkour?

    In France we havea mentality

problem where a lotof people haveclosed minds

I know the term but in your ownwords, explain the meaning?Stella: I dont know and dontcare . It has somethingto do with the English alwayseating beef.

To be a good PK/FR practitioner you have to do a few key things: train, eat, drink and SLEEP! Trainingcomes naturally, thats what we do - I dont need to press the fact, without training and withoutpractice we cannot improve, we get stale and we eventually give up. We all drink, we get thirsty and so

we drink. If you dont, your body slows down, you cant concentrate and eventually you will collapse, but thats another article. Eat, without food youll have no energy to train and your muscles will have nobuilding blocks to repair. Again, this is another article.

However, whether due to work, partying or general lifestyle, we all seem to neglect sleep at somepoint. We tend to think sleep is expendable and that it can be caught up on. The fact of the matter is itisnt and it can never be caught up on.

Incredibly, studies indicate that if you sleep more you WILL get leaner, regenerate faster and mostimportantly, you will adapt and become better and faster (depending on your training regime ofcourse).

With sleep, simply put, the more we put into it (without going over the top) the more we get out of it.In short, the more rest (sleep) we get, the more productive our bodies are in all areas.

Just like getting thirsty (once youre thirsty, you are already dehydrated - you must drink before that, little and often), if you are yawning, feel tired and think you didnt sleep enough last night, youreright, and its already too late!

It can be worth thinking of sleep as a drug that will boost your ability to be the bestTraceur/Freerunner you can be. Get at least 8 hours of this drug a night and you will rise above yourcompetition who are scraping by on a measly 6 hours or less.

Ensuring you get the most of your sleep time:

    1. The body produces melatonin naturally and it is critical for sleep to occur. This only occurs in thedark, therefore it is important to make your bedroom as dark as possible. It may be necessary to blackout the room with blinds or curtains or even wear an eye mask. Anything to stop light creeping in.

    2. Surprisingly, any electronic lights or signals excite the body which impact on sleep patterns, thisincludes anything which gives off electrical signals like mobile phones, TVs, computers and even LEDalarm clocks. To improve your sleep, simply remove them all.

    3. Ensure the environment is as quiet as possible. If necessary, wear ear plugs, this will ensure you arenot disturbed in the night and kept awake.

4.Sleep temperature is also imperative, interestingly, the body alters temperature just prior to falling

asleep so getting hot or cold before sleep is disruptive. Comfort is the aim of the game - if you are coldbuy a warmer duvet, if you are hot, remove items of clothing. Dont just put up with it because ulti-mately, you will not sleep well.

5.Mattress and bed linen quality is surprisingly important. However, we are all different, so this has tobe specic to you. Just like the type of trainer you like to run in. A good bed store can give advice onwhich mattress is suitable depending on how you sleep: on your side, back or front and also in relationto your bodyweight. Something which the community is most likely lacking: change your sheetsregularly and pick pillows that are good quality and have not been around the house for 10 years.Lastly ensure that the pillows you use, dont excessively elevate the neck.

    6. Get up when your alarm clock goes off and dont hit the snooze button. It is better to set the alarmfor the actual time you need to wake and get straight up than to set it for 30mins earlier and hitsnooze 3 times. Youll actually get more sleep if you set an alarm and stick to it.

    7. Last but not least, get into a pattern. Whenever possible, go to bed at the same time and get upat the same time. We as humans are habitual and so are our bodily rhythms. Again, use the drug ofsleep to its full advantage.

sleep is more than just time to dreamby Sean Lerwill

Comfort....Well, on rst impression they arecomfortable. I put them on and

didnt nd them to be toorestrictive. The material used onthe ngers is thin enough to givegood feedback (I expected it totear after one cat leap though)and they t nicely. The adjustableVelcro wrist strap ts snug andis thick enough to give additionalsupport to the wrist. The upper isbreathable and soft.

All in all theyre not a bad glove as

far as gloves go. Its worth notingthat the pair I tested were largesize and they t my hands, whicharent particularly big. If you havemassive hands you should checkwith the retailer for sizing advice.

Score: 4 out of 5Ok, theyre a comfortable glove.

Style....What can I say about the style?Well rstly theres three ngersmissing (2 ngers and a thumb tobe precise), secondly they look a

bit like they came from a specialinterest Adult shop and nally, theyre only available in onecolour.

To be honest, I felt a bit daftwearing them as Ive never beenone to wear gloves for Parkour, but Ive seen people wearing lessattractive and more colourfulgloves for BMXing, Trials Ridingor even weight lifting, so the big

uorescent yellow lines might bea plus to some people.

The material on the palms andngers is shiny rubber/plasticthat makes them look a little bittoo kinky, and despite readingthe website a few times, I stillcant see any real reason for somengers to be missing. On a brighter note, they do matchmy Inov-8 RacePro bag (see lastissue), so all is not lost.

When asked why some ngerswerent covered, the guys atFluescent said: When we set outto design the gloves, we knew thatthey would need to provide thelevel of feel you expected whilestill doing their job of protectingyour hands. Our solution was toprotect the so-called powerngers, your index and yourmiddle ngers, while stillleaving your ring nger, pinky, and thumb open for dexterity. The result was an unorthodoxlook with exactly the balance yourequireAfter using the gloves, I reallydont see any functional reasonfor the choice.

Grip....When reviewing shoes, a lot ofgrip is a very positive thing. Ongloves Ive discovered that thisisnt so. Yes you want grip forvaulting and for climb-ups, but

what about swinging on poles? The material used on the palmsand ngers is quite grippy, evenin slightly damp conditions. Butwhen training underbar and lchtechniques I found the grip a bittoo much and would prefer barehands.

Sadly in wet conditions, especiallyon polished or metal surfaces, theshiny surface of the gloves is more

slippery than your skin.I also didnt feel very comfortableusing the gloves whenclimbing up or cat leaping to highup points, I just didnt have faithin the gloves the way I do my ownhands perhaps condence willcome with further training in thegloves.

    Overall....Am I now a Parkour gloveconvert? No.

Do these gloves have any place inParkour/Freerunning? Yes.

For newcomers and youngpractitioners, or even all those

hand models out there that wantto keep their hands silky smoothand still train on rough surfaces, you may want to invest in a pairof these gloves. They do functionas they were designed to, they aregrippy, they are thin, they lookfunky and they will keep yourhands warm. During the wintermonths we may ALL want a pairof gloves to keep our mits warm, but Id look at alternatives beforeforking out $45.

All in all Im pleasantly surprisedthat the Fluescent gloves arenttotally useless, but I wont beurging people to go out and buythem at the current price.

Build Instructions:1. Determine sizeSize is up to you and your designconstraints. Our new mediumboxes are 36 tall, 32 deep on thebottom, 12 deep on the top, and48 wide so that they t throughdoorways and make efcient useof plywood sheeting. If you dontneed to t through doorways36x36x16x48 is a good size aswell.

Weight and base width relative toheight are the dening factors fortippiness. Our new boxes are alittle narrow so that theyd tthrough doorways, but we cut abig hole near the bottom for

bracing or sandbagging as well asjust building them heavy (about120lbs).

Once you have chosen your size, sketch out each faces dimensionson paper so youll know how tocut your plywood and lay out yourframe pieces. Take your time toplan and think about how to makethe best use of your time and

    materials.

Pictured on the right is an exampleof a BAD plan (sheeting rst and

guring it out as we went).

    2. Make frameWe build our frames like we buildwalls - framed in 2x4s with studsevery 16. This is important sothat you have enough attachmentpoints for the faces and aninternal framing structure todistribute force. You can also use2x6s on the top and bottomrectangles to add strength and

    weight.

We used a mitering chop saw tocut the angles, which helps a hugeamount.

Use at least two 3 screws or nails

    per attachment.

  • 8/7/2019 jump_mag_issue_10

    80/122

    3. Sheet the frame in plywoodYour framing will probably havesome irregularities. Weve foundthat the best way to make surethe pieces t together tightly isto trace the frame onto a sheetof plywood, then cut. If your cutsare accurate, you will have veryfew gaps in your vault boxes. Cut

and mount the ends rst, then thefaces, and then the top so that thesheeting overlaps at the edges.Extra points for angled cuts on thefaces for a perfect t. We usedspare OSB for the sides once, butit breaks down easily on the facesand top. You can get away withCDX if painting but use BCX orACX if nishing clear or if you wantthe most strength.

Use lots of quality fasteners whenassembling your vault boxes. Theplywood sheeting providesexcellent shear strength (to keepthe box in a box shape) and theframing prevents the plywood frombuckling in. But if they arent tiedtogether well, neither will be veryeffective.

We sink quality star head 2

decking screws in at least every8 into every framing member atSTURDY. If youre using nails, besure to caulk down a line of liquidnails on every connection as well

    for a long-lasting box.

    4. Optional Improvements:

HandlesWe move our boxes around a lot,so like to cut in handles for them.Put in handles so that theyre notso low as to be awkward to grab,

and not so high that you bashyour shins when you try to movethem. Weve found that way upis good for most boxes. We useda 2 hole drill and jigsaw to cutour handles, but you can also justscrew on a 2x4.

Route/sand edgesWe used a router and a 1/2roundover/bullnose bit to route

all the edges and handles of ourboxes. We also sand the boxesto 180 grit to get rid of potentialsplinters.

FeetIn order to save wear and tear onthe box bottoms when you movethem around, you can make feetout of 2x4 squares and mountthem to the bottom of your vaultbox as close to the edges as youcan. Ours even have wheelsattached for moving them around

    easier.

  • 8/7/2019 jump_mag_issue_10

    84/122

    5. CoatingYour vault boxes will last a lotlonger if you coat them. If yourelooking to paint your boxes quicklyso you can get jumpingsoonest, its simplest to use anylatex primer/sealer, then paintover with any porch/oor paint.

You can mix playground sand inwith the paint to add sometexture for better grip. Thats howwe made our rst blue boxes acouple years ago.

At Parkour Visions, we like thenatural look of wood. Finding aclear nishing process thats toughand grippy, though, has been achallenge. Paint is going to be 10x easier and less expensive but

wears down ugly and Tyson justdoesnt like it ;) Our last processthat went pretty well involvedstaining, epoxying all the edgesand the tops, and using severalcoats of clear marine varnish withwalnut shells added in for grip.
