A s a holistically-trained nutritionist, I love helping people learn how to improve

their health and enrich their lives by nding the healthy diet that is right for them. My focus is to teach you how proper nutrition and a healthy lifestyle can help you prevent disease and build superior health. A consultation isn’t about being told what you can eat, and what you have to give up. My approach is to work together to identify lifestyle changes you would like to make, and then create a realistic plan with the tools and support you need to achieve your goals. Regardless of whether you are ready to completely overhaul your eating habits or you are just getting started, I can help you on your journey to wellness. All consultations are by appointment only, with evenings and weekends available upon request. After living here for more than 30 years, I am still in awe of the natural beauty that surrounds us. When I am not in the o ce I can be found hiking the trails with Ollie, my constant companion and self-appointed protector.Eat well, live well, be well!

Women IN BUSINESS 2013Summerland Review Thursday, June 6, 2013 www.summerlandreview.com 9

Nearly half of all Summerland busi-nesses are owned or co-owned by women and many other busi-nesses and organiza-tions are managed by

women.Arlene Fenrich,

president of the Sum-merland Chamber of Commerce, said more than 300 of the licensed businesses

are owned or co-owned by women.

“Many women choose self-employ-ment as it provides the freedom to make their own business

decisions, flexibility to achieve a work/life balance and the opportunity to pur-sue excellence in their chosen field,” Fenrich said.

Businesses man-aged by women include two of the local bank branches, Nesters Market and the Summerland Chamber of Com-

merce.The numbers and

trends seen in Sum-merland reflect a sim-ilar trend in British Columbia.

Almost half of

the small businesses in the province are owned and operat-ed by women, Fen-rich said. This is the second highest per-centage in Canada.

Trends changing for women in business

Women represent a growing number of entrepreneurs and busi-ness owners in Canada, according to data from Statistics Canada.

The Statistics Canada Labour Force Survey, con-ducted in 2011, showed 950,000 self-employed women across Canada. This accounted for one-third of all self-employed people.

From 2001 to 2011, the number of self-employed women grew by 23 per cent, compared with an increase of 14 per cent in male self-employment.

The degree of female-owned businesses varies by industry.

Accommodation and food services industries have the highest per-centage of businesses owned or majority-owned by women, at 25 per cent.

Agriculture and pri-mary industries have the lowest level, at nine per cent.

In professional servi-ces, wholesale and retail, 21 per cent of businesses were majority owned by women.

The majority of work-

ing women are in occu-pations which have trad-itionally been dominated by women.

According to the 2009 statistics, 67 per cent of employed women were in teaching, nursing and related health occupa-tions, clerical and admin-istrative work and sales and service work.

However, the propor-tion of women in busi-ness and finance profes-sions has been increasing steadily, as has the num-ber of women in diagnos-tic and treating positions in health care.
