June 2nd 2012, Sparwood Secondary graduation! The day is approaching extremely fast as celebrations begin and we graduates prepare for this great milestone. It marks the end of our high school careers and the beginning of the rest of our

Congratulationsto the Graduates

ConGRADulations

802 Highway 3, Fernie, BC(250) 423-5532

On behalf of the staff and students of Fernie

Secondary School, it is my pleasure to salute

the Graduating Class of 2012.

Over the past five years these young men

and women have successfully navigated the sometimes-

rough waters that lead from adolescence to adulthood.

Along the way, mistakes were made, challenges were met,

and successes were celebrated. But most importantly, talents

were discovered. It is these discoveries that have enabled our

graduates to demonstrate excellence in many different areas,

including academics, trades, drama, athletics, music, and art

to name just a few. Graduates, as you look forward to the

many opportunities and challenges that await you in the journeys still to come, I hope that

you are also able to look back at the time you spent at Fernie Secondary and smile. You have

done well, we are proud of you and we wish you good luck.

We invite all members of the community to join us at the Commencement Ceremony, to

be held on Friday, June 29th at 2:00pm in the Fernie Memorial Arena. Again this year, we

will be able to showcase the many accomplishments of our graduates as well as the generous

support that our community provides through the many scholarships and bursaries that will

be awarded. We look forward to seeing you there!

~ Bill Johnson

As graduation begins to sprout up on the horizon

the excitement of my classmates and myself

follows suit. We look to one another and see pride

in nearing the completion of a goal we’ve worked

towards for most of our young lives. All of us, teachers, students

and parents alike look forward to this important moment and

beyond, full of hope, motivation and also a small amount of fear.

To my fellow graduates, I say, do not fear the future because I

know that each and everyone of you has the capacity to succeed.

To our unparalleled, supportive community, I would like to thank

you on behalf of the graduate class for the countless hours and

funds invested in us.

In the future, I picture myself opening a newspaper and reading about the excellence demonstrated

in athletics, academics and leadership both in the community and abroad by our generation. I also

can safely say, Grad 2012 will not only compete but surpass the expectations of a changing world.

For now, dear grads, we can continue our schooling and look forward to that awe-inspiring

moment on stage where the fruits of our labour will be showcased to the ever present community.

The hard work and dedication in trades, arts, math and science will continue to pay off over the

course of the years to come. I wish you all the best, grads and anxiously await our Commencement

Ceremony.

Fernie Academy Graduation 2012

The Fernie Academy

TFA Mission Statement: Through active learning

experiences, in partnership with the family and community, each student is encouraged to achieve their full potential in academics, arts and athletics.

As we come to the close of our tenth year in operation, this

philosophy remains true. Our students, their families and our teachers continue to work together to prepare our students for the future by offering a variety of learning opportunities. An emphasis on academics, athletics and arts provides all students with a strong liberal educational experience. Writing and delivering speeches, creating and researching science experiments, debating current events, international travel, exploring during local field trips, participating in athletic competitions, challenging a Spelling Bee, raising awareness

about those less fortunate are all venues beyond the regular classroom during which Academy students have an opportunity to learn and grow.

Our staff continues to be committed to the complete education of all of our students. Their

care and attention has laid the foundation for the future success of our graduates. I would like to recognize them for their hard work and dedication to each individual student.

As our graduates come to the close of their time at the Academy, I trust that they feel confident

and well prepared to succeed in their chosen fields. We have challenged, nurtured, respected and had the pleasure of knowing all of them. We wish all the graduates of 2012, a happy and prosperous future.

~ Jocelyn Sombrowski

My name is Ashley Plesman and it is an honour to be graduating from The Fernie Academy. I have only had the privilege of being a part of The Fernie Academy community for two years, yet the impression that it made

on me will never be forgotten. The Fernie Academy is founded on three principles: excellence, respect and learning. Together, we have created an environment where learning is encouraged, talents are recognized and where students are enabled to reach their potential.

The Fernie Academy offers many courses to its students from languages to art and from calculus to science. We are also challenged with speech contests, formal debates and science fair competitions each year. Thanks to this wide variety of courses, I feel that we, as graduating students, are thoroughly prepared to take on the next stage in life. Yet without the dedicated and compassionate teachers who have taught us, encouraged us and inspired us, we would not be the people we are today. Thank you for guiding us along this journey and supporting us both in and out of the classroom. To our principal, thank you for your dedication to this school and your continual support as wefaced the high and lows of high school.

The Fernie Academy has also equipped us with many valuable life experiences. Whether it’s traveling toPeru to work in a boy’s home or venturing into Europe to explore German culture, we owe these experiencesto The Fernie Academy. We have seen the world and been challenged to widen our perspective becauseof it. We have been taught to form our own opinions, to think critically and to strive for excellence inevery circumstance. These are valuable life lessons that not only apply to our future academic endeavoursbut to every aspect of life. Through the adventures, the challenges and the fun days filled with laughter,I feel honoured to have had my classmates beside me. We have walked this journey together and growntremendously along the way.

To the class of 2012, graduation has finally arrived and we’ve made it here together.

Principal ’s Message

The 2011-12 school at ESS is quickly drawing to

a close and this year we will graduate twenty-

one young citizens. On behalf of all ESS

staff I extend sincere congratulations to the

graduates on their successful completion of their high school

education and wish them success with their post secondary

endeavours. Graduation is a significant occasion for the

school and its family and community partners. I want to

remind students that their success is very much the result of a

collective effort, much work on their own behalf, a substantial

invest of time and resources by the school and the care and

commitment of parents and the community at large. The

graduates owe much gratitude to the many who have faithfully invested in them with hope and

the expectation of fulfilled promise. I encourage the graduates to be ambitious, to be aggressive

in seeking out the honourable, and kind in thought and deed to those whom they meet on the

journey. And as always, home is a place to be remembered with fondness and deserving of at

least an occasional visit.

Best of luck indeed!

~ Keith Regular

Valedictorian’s Message

Our grade 12 year has gone by way too

fast. Many of us have had to actually start

thinking about what we wanted to be

when we grew up. We have had to start

planning our lives, and make decisions that would affect

our future. Some of us are going to university or college and

others are taking time off to figure out what they want to

do. Grade 12 was a year of change! Even though it took a

while, our parents started to give us more freedom, and, our

relationships with our teachers became more meaningful.

However, this stressful year did not take away from the good

memories that came with it.
