BROWN SCHOOL BI-WEEKLY ELETTER ~ JUNE 1, 2013 Yellow Team Blue Team Orange Team Green Team Spirit Week & Field Day by Kim Cooper and Keith Jordan What does “Field Day” mean to our students? Best answer of the week, “I don’t know what it means, but it means having a great day!” That is an attitude we hope all the students have. Many questions fill the school this week; who will be Brown School’s Ultimate Field Day team? What team is ahead right now? How many events can each student compete in? Field Day is not only a day to have fun with friends and teachers but a combination of teamwork, goal-setting and community. The excitement of Field Day fills the halls at Brown School. The students have been setting and working toward their athletic goals. They have been participating with their Field Day team colors, reviewing the sports and games of the year. Field Day is more than just running a race; it’s a way to exhibit the hard work of preparing for your event. From the youngest kids in nursery to the oldest kids in 8 th grade, each student is ready to work for their team color. Beginning on Monday Brown School will begin sprint week. (See Spirit Week Schedule). Spirit Week is a week to show your school and team pride. Next Thursday and Friday our Hall walls will be filled with excitement. On Thursday June 6 th , grades 3 rd -8 th will travel to Schenectady High School and run on their track from 9:15-10:30. They will be trying to beat their personal best or break a Brown School track record and have their names placed on a plaque. Then in the afternoon, after a picnic lunch, we move onto the “crazy relays.” We end the day with a Team tug-of- war. On Friday June 7 th , Nursery to 2 nd grade will have their Field Day here at Brown School. The students will work with their coach and progress through the different athletic stations. After lunch, they will spend the afternoon running in our “crazy relays.” Whatever their goal is, Field Day is sure to be filled with excitement, teamwork and most importantly fun! As the day approaches, there are many things to remember about Field Day. Have fun and work hard!

Field Day is not only a day to have fun with friends and teachers but a combination of teamwork, goal-setting and community. The excitement of Field Day fills the halls at Brown School. PowerPoint in First Grade! Every first grader completed a research project on a famous person this month. After gathering information from books and taking notes using a graphic organizer, the students created individual PowerPoints. They had to construct sentences and sequence the information, as well as locate pictures on the computer to complement each slide of information. When they were done, they practiced presenting their slides to their classmates in preparation for a formal presentation for their parents. Congratulations, first grade, for a job well done!

Around the World in Third Grade

Third graders started the year by reviewing continents, working on their mapping skills, and studying explorers and the locations they traveled to. Throughout the year, students studied countries such as China, Mexico and Ireland, learning about landmarks, family life, food, traditions, and more. They also wrote to a penpal class in France to learn more

about that culture and to share about American culture. To end the year, students worked in pairs to research a country, and put together a trifold, presentation and interactive piece to share with other classes and their families. They also located the capital and major landmarks in their country and marked them in Google maps so that they could share them in Google Earth on the iPads. Students practiced presenting to each other and gave constructive feedback on how groups could improve their presentations. Parents and students from other classes enjoyed getting their own passports, so that they could travel around the world collecting stamps.

5th-8th Grade Talent FestOver the past couple of months, the 5th-8th grade music classes have been working on organizing a variety show. They pooled their talents and put together a set of performances ranging from comedy skits to interpretive dance. Many solo and group musicians got a chance to perform for an audience in the music café. Students gained experience in planning and organizing a performance and invited their buddies and other classes to watch the finished product.

A Hopping Good Time!To enhance our unit of study on insects, Scott Kirkton (Zoe's Dad) visited the classroom to give a presentation on grasshoppers.  The children were all “a buzzz” as they watched the grasshoppers jump and flutter their wings.  They observed grasshoppers that had been placed in cold and warm environments and compared the activity levels of each.  They discovered that grasshoppers are cold-blooded and that their activity level changes with the temperature. It was a hopping good presentation!
