Strathmore resident Paula Beek- man is spearheading the organization, Strathmore For Youth, following the drug-related death of 15-year-old Jona- than Herrmann last Friday afternoon.  The main goal of the organization is to re-open the Youth Centre in Strath- more.  According to Beekman, Herrmann’s unfortunate passing inspired her to form the group, which will attend the  June 15 town council meeting in hopes of opening a youth centre. “There is a need for it in the c ommu- nity, ” said Beekman, who is a program director of a before and after school program. However, once kids are over 12 years old, they can no longer take part in the program. “In the last three  years, I see transitions happening with my kids (who can no longer be part of the program) and they basically go to the skate park and hang out until mom and dad get home. I’m not comfortable  with (that type) of exposure if there is no one there to supervise or manage. “I didn’t think that a death would have to be the reason why we do this … that’s why I’m upset, is because it could have been avoided, maybe.  An ounce of prevention (is worth a) pound of cure.”  According to Beekman, the goal is to create a committee that will utilize the old youth centre building to help with early intervention. “Maybe mentorship can be pro-  vided there with community work,” said Beekman, who is working with other organizations in the community, along with the Town of Strathmore. “To bring in health services, to bring in some information on drugs and al- cohol, maybe some counseling, some planning for the future – job boards … things that will actually be an empow- erment tool. “It is time to have something proac- tive for the youth.” Page 3 Chamber hosts annual SpringFest Page 10 Strathmore For Youth organized after tragedy Look on Page 4 for Town of Strathmore Municipal Notices Ranch Market on the Trans Canada Hwy Club Sobeys Reward Program Page 25 Contact Us Today! 403.934.5589 -@ strathmoretimes.com www.StrathmoreTimes .com Condos startig At $154,900 startg At B-Wk Pamat $323 Th Prct Cmbat o VAlue Ad lifesTyle sa Maagr - T Trta 403-333-3 539 www.skWtCd .cm Rgtr At skWtCd.cm Ad Rcv $1000 T ward yr nw Hm!  A new program, aimed at recogniz-ing local youth, is set to be hittingthe streets of Strathmore within the very near future.

“I know it has been quite success-ful in other communities and it startsa positive relationship between youth and authority,” says Councillor Bob Sobol.  The “Positive Ticketing Program”

was launched June 2 at the FCSS of-ces, located in the same building asthe Strathmore Public Library. TheBy-law ofcers and Councillor BobSobol, among others, were in atten-dance. The recipients of this program will

be youth under the age of 18. It is for  youth who are “caught” doing gooddeeds. For these good deeds, the winners will be rewarded a voucher

for a fun, free activity. These vouchers will be issued by

caring law enforcement personnelfor good behaviour. For example:good driving or performing a gooddeed in the community. The purpose of such a program is

to build a good and trusting relation-ship between youth and authority, and encourage youth to reach outand have a good relationship withthe community around them.

“I know for a fact that there area lot of good things done by youthin this community, but for the mostpart, youth get a bad rap,” said So- bol. “Vandalism and other crimes aresomething that always occur, but un-fortunately most youth get painted with the same brush and it’s not fair

to the rest.”  This program will be tried until

September just to see how success-ful it proves to be.

The Boys and Girls Club o Strath-more has been afliated with the Aird-rie Boys and Girls Club up until now.

They are now in need o core undingand the help o volunteers to sustainthe program.

“It’s a really important program herein Strathmore,” says Shannon Ziemano the Boys and Girls Club. “I believeit is an aordable option or parentsand it gives children the opportunity to participate in (dierent) activities. It’s a proactive approach into gettingchildren involved in their community.” The Boys and Girls Club runs eight

summer camps. Each camp is one week long and runs Monday to Thurs-day 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. and Friday 9 a.m.until noon. The cost o these camps is$100 per week or members and $120per week or non-members. The age o the campers is 6-12.

Each week the camp has a dierent

theme, and activities participated inrevolve around that set theme. For ex-ample, the frst week’s theme is “Backin Time,” so time-period games will beplayed and other activities will ocuson the Centennial. Fridays are spentdoing community service aroundStrathmore. As or older children ages 13-17, the

Strathmore Boys and Girls Club oersa training program or junior counsel-lors. They must apply then they will gothrough a small training program.

“It’s a good idea or the older kids because they can use this experienceon a resume, or even as volunteer hours towards school,” says Zieman.

However, or this program to contin-

ue to operate, core unding is majorly needed.

“Any company that wants to take uson and become a sponsor would begreat because Strathmore needs a pro-gram like this,” says Zieman. The Strathmore Boys and Girls Club

is indeed in Fundraiser mode. On May 28, they held the “Abraca Dazzle” mag-ic show at the Hope Covenant Churchin Strathmore. All the money maderom the show is going towards oper-ating the summer camps this year.

“We are defnitely going to continueto undraise. Nothing is concrete yet

but we will continue to raise money towards operating our club,” says Zie-

man.For more inormation on how tomake donations or on how to volun-teer eel ree to contact Shannon Zie-man at [email protected].

Despite the chilly weather, this year’sannual SpringFest celebration, held

June 4, was a success according to eventorganizers. After last year’s event was cancelled

due to blizzard-like weather conditions, this year’s celebration went off withouta hitch in downtown Strathmore.

Originally known as “GeraniumDays,” it was an event to which all thegreenhouses in the area could come outand sell their plants.

Now it is an event for the entire fam-ily. This year featured a few local green-

houses, such as Brassard Greenhouses, the EnCana stage, which hosted local

youth performers, an obstacle courseand face painting for the little ones, anda matinee was featured at Joyland The-

atre for the afternoon.

“We’re way down in our number of ta- bles this year partly because of the poor  weather. People who registered that justdidn’t show up and also because thesmall home business base event is tak-ing place at the same time and they’reindoors,” said President Lin Walker.

“SpringFest and Relay for Life arealmost guaranteed to bring you bad

weather” said Walker in a jokingly man-ner.

“We’re a little disappointed that thenumbers don’t appear to what we

would have liked them to be, but today  was supposed to be sunny and 24 de-grees.” said Walker.

Despite all factors, there were somepeople of all ages who were out andabout and braved the cold.

“Maybe next year we will have it inDecember and have a nice summer day,” laughed Walker.

Another chilly year for SpringFest

Clockwise top left: Craig and michelle Brassard braved the cold weather at the annual “Spring Fest”

held downtown Strathore on Saturday, June 4. This youngster took part in the celebrations, whileSera Britton (botto left) gets her face painted.

Each year, Tim Horton’s own-ers partner with local youth or-ganizations to select economical-ly disadvantaged kids to attendone of six foundation camps.

Since 1975 the foundation hasserved more than 150,000 kidsthrough its variety of camp pro-grams, designed to help each

camper discover their best.Lindsay Rohl, general manager

and partner of the Tim Horton’sRestaurant in Strathmore, waspleased with the turnout on June1. Rohl had a number of volun-teers from the community cometo help out with this worthy cause, including those from theChamber of Commerce and localreghters.  The restaurant in Strathmore

sends four children to the Tim’sCamp in Kananaskis. Camp Day

is the one day each year whenthe owner/operators donate

100% of their proceeds from cof-fee sales made on that day to the

Tim Horton’s Children’s Founda-tion. In 2010 Camp Day raisedmore than 9.7 million dollars.

Rohl said the “heart of thecommunity sure comes into fo-cus on days like this” and isnever surprised at the generos-ity of local sponsors and donorsfor their contributions to thesilent auction that they have in

conjunction with the coffee salesthat day.

Katelyn Sandum from DuckLake, Alberta, decided that

she wanted to help kids withcancer by donating her long,

blonde locks to the Locks of Love program.

Locks of Love is a publicnon-prot organization thatprovides hairpieces to nan-cially disadvantaged childrenin the United States and Cana-da under age 21 suffering fromlong-term medical hair lossfrom any diagnosis. They meeta unique need for children by using donated hair to createthe highest quality hair pros-thetics. Most of the childrenhelped by Locks of Love havelost their hair due to a medi-

cal condition called alopeciaareata, which has no knowncause or cure. The prosthesesprovided will help to restoretheir self-esteem and their con-

dence, enabling them to facethe world and their peers. A small gathering of friends

and family assembled at theHussar Arena on Friday eve-ning to help cheer on six par-ticipants shave and cut their hair. Michelle Hager (one of theorganizers), who had her headshaved, was convinced that sheneeded to “do something.” Her

Aunt was in her second roundof cancer treatments and hadlost her hair in the last round.Hager woke up Easter morningand decided that “my decision

was made and now the raisingof funds and promoting the

cause began.”Her Dad, Jurgen Schempp,

nine-year-old son Colby Schempp, seven-year-old neph-ew Cadin Schempp and good

friend Kim Larsen joined Hag-er in her head-shaving quest.Katelyn was the only partici-pant who donated her hair.

Mom Tara Sandum, swelling  with pride and emotion, saidthat she is “overwhelmingly proud of what a little girl couldselessly do for someone else.”

Sandum said that Katelyn was doing it in honor of her friend Leeza Neilsen from thecommunity of Hussar who has

been battling with cancer for anumber of years. Leeza will bedoing the honorary lap in theRelay for Life in Drumheller later in the month.

A regular town council meeting washeld on June 1 in Strathmore Town O-fce. Talk o opening a museum in the Town

o Strathmore was brought up by Coun-cillor Pat Fule. Council discussed that al-most 20 years ago this was brought up,

but nothing ever came about.  A motion was then made to orm an

ofcial committee dedicated to makingplans towards building a museum in thetown o Strathmore.

Councillor Fule mentioned a small sideproject which had been started, video-in-terviewing seniors in the community tolearn about Strathmore long, long ago.I a museum is indeed opened, these ar-chives will be used to help educate thecommunity on the history o Strathmore. Heritage Days security

Enhanced policing was discussed or  August long weekend, during the annual“Heritage Days Stampede” event, held

July 28-Aug. 1. As it is a busy time or thetown, RCMP ofcers are oten required

to work overtime during this weekenddue to the amount o people attendingthe event, and o possibly rowdy behav-iour. The extra costs will be paid by the

 Town o Strathmore.Watering issues

Councillor Fule also mentioned someo the general concerns regarding the ir-rigating and watering o the Birth Forest.

A representative o the Horticulturist andParks sta assured that these trees are

being careully looked ater, and will be  watered or the next two to three sea-sons by the town, until the trees reachproper maturity at which time nature cantake its course. Council was also assured

that trees that appeared to have any win-ter damage were being taken care o in adierent manner to ensure their survival. Honouring citizens

Councillor Fule also named the citizenso the month. For June 2011, Strathmore`sSaety Patrollers were named citizens o the month.

“Strathmore has over 100 Grade 5 and6 students who volunteer to be saety

patrollers. These students oten arrangeto get to school early, and may have tostay late at the end o the day,” said Fule.“They work at their patrol stations in allkind o weather. They help riends andamily cross busy streets saely and they are very reliable.” Donating to a gooD cause

The devastation that occurred in SlaveLake was also discussed.

“Our hearts go out to those in SlaveLake,” said Deputy Mayor John Rempel.“Some have not only lost their homesand everything they ever worked or, butalso their jobs due to the raging fre thatstruck through their town.”  The Town o Strathmore had decid-

ed to donate a total o $5,000 dollars

to Slave Lake through the FCSS. They agreed that it may be a better idea to notdonate the money all at once, becauseit is usually a little ways down the road(rom the disaster) that the money ismost needed. As or items that were do-nated by local citizens and were droppedo at the town ofce, the town will fndanother organization that is transport-ing items up to Slave Lake and hopeully send these items along.

“We want to extend our deepest sor-rows to those in Slave Lake. We are acommunity o signifcant size and I be-lieve Strathmore can do a lot to helpSlave Lake,” said Rempel.

Form ground beef patties as you normally would for a burger, top

with cheddar cheese, and wrap in bacon, (criss/crossing in a cross

hatch pattern), then add wieners for the head, tail & legs (splitting

the legs with slits for toes). Place on an oven rack, covered looselywith foil and bake for 20 – 30 minutes at 400 degrees or grill them on

the bbq, make a thinner patty so they cook through quickly and keep

an eye on them so they don’t burn.

(Healthier option – ground turkey or chicken and veggie

No matter the size of the space or the

organizing challenge, there is a shelving

solution to the rescue. Big or small, standing

or mounted, shelves come in lots of varieties

and can solve most any storage dilemma.

Explore your options, and then determine the

one that’s just right for you.

DiviDe a room:  If you’re dealing with

a too big of a space, try establishing a

few separate areas with your furniture

arrangement and more specically, your

shelves. Opt for a large stand-alone

bookshelf and use it as a divider.Your bookcase doesn’t have to be big and

tall. A long, skinny bookcase can be turned

on its side to create a horizontal divider.

At three to four feet high, it’s perfect for

showcasing a few knick-knacks, a stack

of books and a lamp. Be creative and try

different things, you can always change it

back.

Create more spaCe:  Free up space by

utilizing the walls above your high-trafc

surfaces. Try mounting a single shelf over

your kitchen sink to hold dishwashing liquid

or other kitchen gadgets. You can also hang

a trio of oating shelves over a small table

in your entryway where you can place items

that tend to clutter in other items, like keys

and mail.

Wall spaCe: So often we think we don’t

have a large space, but don’t forget your walls

and how you can utilize the bareness. Metal

brackets attached to walls, allow you to add

different sizes of shelving and move them

around as needed. Paint the wall behind, a

rich color that will enhance the look of the

shelving on your wall.

Wall mount tv:  TV stands can use upa lot of oor space, so try mounting your at

screen on the wall. You can pick up a mount

at more building supply stores or furniture/

electronic stores. This is a great way to

make a small space look huge and you’ll

save yourself some money on not having to

purchase a TV stand.

Corner spaCe:  If you have a small space

but need more room, try creating a look in

the corners of your room. You can purchase

at many building stores, corner shelves in

different sizes and this will create additional

space and an attractive accent to your home.

KitChen CupboarDs:  Often cupboards

give you too much space, and a lot of it is

wasted. You can purchase at home stores,

plastic coated wire racks that allow you to

store plates or bowls on top of each other

without having to move the top dishes to get

to the bottom. These are inexpensive and

give you a lot of space in a small kitchen.

 Parliamentary Report

Member of Parliament Kevin Sorenson says he ispleased with the Conservative Government’s planfor Canada as announced in the Speech from the

Throne. Sorenson says, “After 10 years, I am over-  joyed that the Throne Speech promises the failedand costly long-gun registry will be eliminated inthe First Session of the 41st Parliament.

“We will provide farmers in Western Canada thesame freedom of choice that farmers in other prov-inces already enjoy by eliminating the monopoly of the Canadian Wheat Board. We will reintroduceour comprehensive law-and-order legislation tocombat crime and terrorism and table legislation toreform the Senate and combat Human Smuggling.

“The overall tone of the Throne Speech keeps with our election campaign focus on the economy.Canada continues to be one of the world’s top-performing advanced economies, but the globaleconomic environment remains uncertain. We areacting to protect Canada’s recovery and set the

foundations for long-term growth.”Sorenson continues, “The Throne Speech prom-ises that our government will support job creationand growth by providing a stable, low-tax envi-ronment; developing a highly skilled and exible

workforce; supporting innovation and the adop-tion of new technologies; and expand access tomarkets abroad. This is important to our local ag-riculture sector.”

“We are committed to eliminating the federal budgetary decit and support hard-working fami-lies by helping seniors make ends meet and con-tinuing to help Canadians save for their retirement.

We will work with the provinces and territories toensure that the health care system is sustainableand delivers results for Canadians.”

Sorenson concludes, “The economy remains theGovernment’s top priority. Next Monday, we will

introduce the Next Phase of Canada’s Economic Ac-tion Plan - Budget 2011 - to build on the progressalready made and to ensure Canada remains one of the world’s top performing advanced economies.” Visit www.sft.gc.ca to read the Speech from the

Throne for the First Session of the 41st Parliamentof Canada.

 Budget 2011: MP Sorenson Says,

“It’s on the Right Track”

Member of Parliament Kevin Sorenson is ap-plauding the next phase of Canada’s Economic Ac-tion Plan, the Conservative Government’s Budget2011. Sorenson says, “This Budget is on the righttrack. It will have positive benets for Alberta fami-lies, seniors and those who create jobs. We kept

our word on our commitments during the recentfederal election. This budget was a good one when

we introduced in March; and it is a good budgettoday.

“Our most vulnerable seniors will receive andadditional $600 for single seniors and $840 for cou-

ples; all classes of rearms will continue to havetheir license renewal fees waived until we scrapthe long-gun registry this fall; and at a time when

budgets are tight, our government believes thattaxpayers should not be burdened with an annual$27 million per vote subsidy for political parties so

we will eliminate the per-vote subsidy.“The next phase of our Conservative Govern-

ment’s Plan keeps taxes low to promote jobs andeconomic growth, while supporting Alberta fami-lies and seniors.” It includes:

Supporting Job Creation: keeping taxes low for employers by introducing a temporary Hiring Cred-it for Small Businesses to support job growth; anexpanded work sharing; extending the Mineral Ex-ploration Tax Credit, extending tax relief for invest-ments in new equipment and machinery, investingin innovation to help our agriculture sectors grow;and more.

Strengthening our Families and Communities: upto $5,000 grants for Alberta families to make their homes more energy efcient; up to $840 in new an-nual nancial support for needy Alberta seniors; anew Family Caregivers Tax Credit, a new Children’s

Arts Tax Credit; loan forgiveness to attract doctorsand nurses to rural Alberta; a new $3,000 volunteer reghters’ tax credit; and the waiving of licenserenewal fees for hunters and rearm owners.

Investing in the economy of tomorrow: with anew $50 million Agricultural Innovation Initiative;increased support for research and technology; im-proved federal student loans program for Albertastudents; and more.

 Preserving Canada’s Fiscal Advantage: eliminat-ing government waste; limiting spending growth;

and closing unfair tax loopholes to ensure Canadastays on track for balanced budgets.

“Under our Conservative Government in 2011-12, Alberta will see record high federal transferstotaling nearly $3.4 billion – an increase of over $1.1 billion from the former Liberal government.

Alberta will see growing transfer support for healthcare ($2.1 billion – a 29% jump from the Liberals)and social services (nearly $1.3 billion – a 114%

jump over the Liberals). This increased support will help hospitals, schools, and other critical ser-  vices in our province. Our Conservative Govern-ment continues to ensure Canada has record sup-port to provide the health care, educational andother important services families depend on,” con-rmed MP Sorenson.

Speech from the Throne: Stability, Prosperity and Security

To the Editor Strathmore’s slogan “where quality of life is a way

of life” sounds nice, but doesn’t mean much unless“quality of life” is dened and measurable. Assumingthe slogan implies a high quality, how does this relateto “scal responsibility” and “due diligence”? In spiteof Councillor Sobol’s previous claim that “due dili-gence” was done for tendering street sweeping, last

week the mayor set that straight. The Mayor admitted

in an article that they were not given all the informa-tion and omitted a no drop dead start up date in thecontact.

In winter we spread (sometimes and some plac-es) gravel on the roads at taxpayers’ expense. In thespring we sweep up the gravel at taxpayers’ expense.

We could save both expenses. This might be consid-ered “scally responsible”. But would our “quality of life” be better or worse with this nancial saving?

To determine this, we have to perform some form of cost/benet comparison. It is necessary to know thecosts and the costs of alternatives. This is part of “duediligence” which has proven a challenge for the Townadministration. Unfortunately value of benets aremuch more difcult to measure, especially when the

benets are in the form of services or aesthetics suchas; health, safety, parks, education, etc. This is further complicated by calculating the ben-

ets that could be obtained by the alternative uses of the funds and the fact that individuals have differentpreferences. Overall, public goods and services tendto be undervalued compared to private goods, leadingto “private afuence and public poverty.”

Notwithstanding that education and health are al- ways ranked among the top priorities in surveys, they are among the rst cut-backs in tough times.

“Fiscally responsible” politicians tend to look at

Where Quality of Life is a Way of Lifeonly half of the picture. They concentrate on costs and ignore

benets. This is really “scal irresponsibility.”Numerous sayings illustrate the consequences of this type of

thinking: “a stitch in time saves nine, a penny wise and poundfoolish,” and the TV commercial, “pay me now (oil) or pay belater (engine).”

Strathmore advertises it has a “progressive town council.” Are they really progressive or just incapable or unwilling to

consider benets as well as costs? Did allowing the non-potable

water system in the parks to deteriorate save money in the longrun? If more expensive potable water will be used in the parks,

will the next decision be to stop watering the parks ensuring they  will deteriorate?

Is this the place where “quality of life is a way of life”? Bob Carver,

Strathmore

The kindergarten to Grade 2 studentsof Westmount school put on a musicalcalled “How does your garden groove”for friends and family on June 2. For four months, the students practicedsongs at lunch time. The show wasabout 25 minutes long, and was held inthe Westmount school gymnasium. Jana Kopp, the music teacher at West-

mount Elementary along with Amanda

Ball, took on the task of working withthe children over many noon hours.Kopp worked with the children on themusical portion, learning ve songs for the show. Ball took on the drama por-tion of the play. Twenty two kids were chosen to play

small parts throughout the play.“We tried to pick children who hadn’t

had a chance yet to play a more major role,” said Kopp. “Some got the chanceto be more participant in the Christmasconcert and others in the spring con-cert.” Angie Hitch also volunteered her time

doing the face painting for the play.“Angie has been great. She’s helped

with other shows by doing the facepainting,” said Kopp.

However, Kopp said, “we couldn’thave done it without parent volunteers. They brought snacks during rehearsals.

They painted the back drop, and madethe decorations for the gym.” The show was a great success, and

many turned out to support the many  wonderful performers.

Another play will be put on by theGrades 3 and 4 classes next week, called “Rock and Roll Forever” in the Westmount Elementary gymnasium.

As school winds down for th summr, th studnts at Strathmor High School njoyd an xtndd

Mason Davis was diagnosed with autism whenhe was just three years old. Now almost 13, hehas overcome many challenges in his short years.

“Children with autism have a tendency to have

high levels of stress and anxiety,” said Fred Rap-ple, secretary of the Lions club of Strathmore. This was the case with Mason. Things are a little different now. About a month

ago, the family received a generous donationfrom the Lions club of Strathmore to bring up a“squeeze machine,” invented by Temple Grandinin 1965, a veterinarian who is a high-functioningautistic person herself.

“He had huge anxiety issues before getting thesqueeze,” said Mason’s mother, Roxanne Davis.“We rst learned of the squeeze machine while watching the Templin Grandin movie on HBO.”

The “squeeze machine” is a deep pressure de- vice designed to calm hyper sensitive persons.

“Temple Grandin got the idea from how ani-mals react in a squeeze. You take an animal thathas been out on the range for a while and you

take them and put them into a squeeze. As you’re working with them in the corral, they will justcalm right down and the same principal appliesto people who have high levels of stress and anxi-ety,” said Rapple.

“I rst saw it while watching the movie I lookedat my husband Roy and said we need to get Ma-son one of these,” said Davis.

Ever since he was a small child, Mason alwaysliked to be cuddled, hugged, and squeezed tightly, said his mother. It helped calm him down in timesof stress. However, he is almost 13 and has hit ahuge growth spurt quite normal to boys his age.

“He’s almost as tall as me now. Cuddling him just wasn’t going to cut it,” said Davis.

This was why his parents felt the squeeze ma-chine was the only option. However, these state of the art machines did not come cheap.

“I can’t work because Mason is out of school somuch. We live on one income, so things are hardas it is. We did not have a couple extra thousanddollars just lying around,” said Davis. This was where the Lions club came into play.

First Roy Davis had approached Keith Temple, aco-worker of his, to see if he could build a ma-chine such as the “squeeze”. Temple, the President of the Lions club, then

recommended to Roy that he contact the Lionsclub to see what they would consider doing.

“That’s what the Lions are all about, helping thepeople of the local community rst,” said Rapple.

Following a letter written to the Lions club by Roy and Roxanne, the Lions club decided they

wanted to help. They donated approximately

$5,000 dollars to pay for the machine, and Keith Temple was able to nd a trucking company todonate their time, truck and gas to transport themachine.

Eddie Rei of Triumph Express, headquarteredout of Toronto, Ont., was happy to help and trans-ported the squeeze machine all the way from Mo-kena, Illinois to here in Strathmore. This was asignicant donation as the cost of fuel is highthese days, and a person’s time does not come without cost.

“The reaction Mason had to the machine therst time he saw it was truly amazing. He asked if it was Christmas time, and he’s never really gottenexcited about anything before,” said Davis.

Keith Temple and Fred Rapple were quite re-  warded when they delivered the squeeze ma-chine.

“He just knew how to use it instantly,” said Rap-ple.

It has only been around a month since they have received the squeeze machine, but Masonuses it at least ten times a day said his mother.

“I wish the squeeze was portable because ithelps him so much,” said Davis. This is only the second machine of its kind in

Canada. The other one is located in Toronto.“It is a pretty unique machine” said Rapple.Mason’s family is very thankful for the help

from the Lions club.“They not only paid for it but they got it to us

as well. The help that we have received has really humbled me,” said Davis.

Just as there’s a proper coating or every project, there is a proper

applicator designed specifcally to do the job. Using the right paint

applicator can mean the dierence between a proessional looking

paint job and an amateur one.

Also an important actor to the do-it-yourseler, the proper applicator

will make the job much easier.

A top-quality paintbrush is a good investment because it will last

longer and give you superior results. Various paintbrushes, including

wall, block, and sash and trim brushes, are designed or the job you

have in mind.

When you want to paint the largest area in the shortest time, you

should invest in a good quality paint roller. To select the right roller,

match the roller cover abric type and nap length to the type o paint

you intent to use and the surace you will cover.

Another type o tool or applying paint to large areas is the pad appli-

cator. Pads come in various widths to suit the surace and size o the job.

They are used with special trays, or with large buckets and grids. Pad

painting is especially suited or exterior shingles and large oor areas.

Hard-to-paint projects such as wicker shutters, railings and louvered

doors can be painted much more quickly with a spray applicator.

Now available to the consumer at an aordable price is the power

paint roller that pumps paint out o the can and through the roller.

These power rollers are excellent or use when large areas are to be

painted with one colour.Using the right applicator will be a huge stop towards an easier and

more beautiul paint job.

Strathmore’s Royal Canadian Air Ca-det Squadron celebrated their Ceremo-nial Annual Parade at Strathmore’s CivicCenter, this past Saturday, June 4. Many parents and friends were in attendanceto support and acknowledge the great

work that the fty-two cadets, rangingin age from 12-19, have accomplishedthroughout this past year. These events include a lot of fundrais-

ing, competitions, and aviation directedskill building. Even though this year’sair cadet program has come to its sea-sonal end, a lot of the ceremony talk

was directed towards what training the

cadets will be taking this summer. Some of the younger cadets will be

taking a general, two week trainingcourse where they will learn the ba-sics: how to march, drills, leadershipskills and an expanded knowledge onaviation. Others will be attending lead-ership courses and a Survival Camp inCold Lake.

One cadet is going to train to be asurvival instructor for the rst half of summer. In the survival course, cadets

will be sent on solos, some two, three, and ve days long. Given only the ne-cessities to survive, the cadets must ra-tion one meal package, which containsenough calories to sustain the cadets for

the duration of their solo.“They teach them how to bush-craft.For example, we’ve had kids come outof the eld with marionettes that thatthey have made out of sticks, something

to keep them entertained. But, they do alot of sleeping because they don’t know  what else to do with themselves,” saidCaptain Tara MacPherson.

Some senior cadets have been suc-cessful in receiving scholarships for their summer training courses, includ-ing some cadets who will be trainingfor their glider pilots, and ghter pilotslicense, all paid for by the Departmentof National Defense and the Air CadetLeague of Canada.

One cadet will be learning to be a Ri-e Coach, to eventually be able to run arange for the cadets. Out of the fty-twocadets, there will be only one cadet who

will be graduating from the squadron -Flight Sergeant Sean McCarton, who is

currently working in construction hopesto become a missionary in the future.

Captain Tara MacPherson is very proud of her cadets and states thather job is very easy, given the excel-lent group of kids. Even the so-called‘trouble makers’ are not really troublemakers.

“My husband and I joke that we havetwo kids, but really, we have fty kids.

You get them when they’re 12 and they leave us when they’re 19, so it’s a longtime to have any group of teenagers,”said MacPherson.  With many cadets returning to next

year’s squadron, the only hope is thateven more kids will get involved and

join the program.“This is Canada’s best kept secret. These kids are getting the greatest train-ing you can get in this country and it’sfree,” said MacPherson.

On June 3-4, volunteers worked diligently to helpput in a new playground at Calderon Acres Camp-ground & R.V. Storage.

Calderon Acres is located about 15 km southwesto Strathmore, providing 320 sites on 80 acres o property, with a caring and sae environment or people o all ages, including young amilies and se-niors alike.

“We really want to create a amily-orientated at-mosphere,” says Ted Kleyson, owner o Calderon Acres.

Volunteers and sta members worked hard thispast weekend to put this equipment into place.

Many were campers at Calderon Acres who volun-teered their weekend time or the beneft o the en-tire campground.

Laarge donated all the stone used or the play-ground.

“That was pretty amazing because it cut a lot o the cost or us,” says Kleyson.

Gator Trucking also helped haul all the stone toCalderon Acres or use in the playground.

Owners Ted and Katie Kleysen want to give a greatdeal o thanks to Laarge or the stone donation,Gator Trucking or their transportations services, allthe volunteers who gave up their time to help putthe playground in place, and sta members Tony  Velychko, Brit Martin, Wes Caldwell, Dallas Yingst,Bill Heath, and Lynn Benson or all their hard work.

Rural humour is back with Jake and the KidManny EvErEtt

Times Contributor

The popular book Jake and the Kid, written by W.O. Mitchell (1961), originat-ed in stories written or Maclean’s. Theseries ran weekly on CBC Radio rom1950-56 and made Mitchell a national ce-lebrity. This summer Rosebud’s Theatre Opera

house brings Mitchell’s humor back tothe stage in Jake and the Kid. This hu-morous “growing up” story will transportaudiences back to fctional Crocus, Sas-katchewan, where a young boy and theamily’s hired hand Jake orge a riend-ship through changing seasons.  The production ocuses on three o

Mitchell’s Jake and the Kid stories (TheDay Jake Made Her Rain, Cabin Fever and You Gotta Teeter) into a two-actplay with tall-tale story lines, colorul vernacular dialogue and poetic descrip-tions o Canada’s prairies. Combined, theshow successully brings to the stage thecantankerous hired hand Jake, the Kid,the Kid’s Ma and Old Man Gatenby, who

reappears in the stories as Jake’s neigh- borly nemesis and a CBC reporter.

Nathan Schmidt, a resident actor o thetheatre has had a number o memorableroles in the productions, so who better suited to play Jake than him? Accordingto Schmidt, “the un o playing characterslike daddy Sherry and Jake is that they are rereshingly honest, headstrong andlovable. I relish the opportunity to attackand speak impulsively rather than think-ing beore I act … the punch lines areperect and the humor lands every time.It is a treat to get to play these roles.” Jake and the Kid: Prairie Seasons plays

on the Rosebud Theatre Opera Housestage Wednesdays to Saturdays until July then it plays Wednesday to Sundays until

August 28. Matinee and evening peror-mances are scheduled. Please call Rose- bud Theatre Box Ofce or reservationsat 1-800-267-7553. More inormation can be ound at www.rosebudtheatre.com.

The West Wheatland 4-H Show andSale is fast approaching and 9-year-oldLandon Hebbes is pounding the pave-ment asking for his community’s help.

Every year the Standard 4-H Club hasa young person look after raising theCharity Lamb. Landon is this year’s young person and he is hoping that hisCharity Lamb “Hornet” will be able toraise money for the Alberta Children’sHospital. He picked his lamb from hisfamily farm in March and has fed, halter- broke and cared for him ever since. It isnow time for him to market his lamb, soLandon has been going around to busi-nesses in Strathmore asking for supportin his endeavor to raise money for other children.

He has not been able to visit withevery business in town, so if he hasn’t been by to visit with you, give him a calland he would be glad to give you infor-

mation. The Children’s hospital has beena huge part of his family’s life as his sis-ter has been seeing doctors there sinceshe was born 15 years ago, and she willundergo heart surgery on June 24 by Dr.Clegg from the Children’s.

Fifty per cent of the money will go to

the Children’s Hospital, and the buyer  will be able to donate the other fty per cent to their charity of choice. Landonand his family have donated the lamband the feed, so all the money will begiven away. Landon will be advertisinghis lamb on Q91 the week before thesale as Strathmore Motor Products gen-erously sponsored his air-time.  Alberta Children’s Hospital serves

more than 75,000 patients each year. When you give to the Children’s Hospital you are supporting family-centered childhealth programs, specialized life-savingequipment and advanced pediatric re-search. Many people know someone  who has benetted from this amazinghospital. Landon is asking that you come

and bid or send a bid in on his lamb on June 11 at 3 p.m. in the Rockyford Are-na. If you are planning on attending thisevent the members will be showing their sheep at 9 a.m., a complimentary lunch will run from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and thenthe sale will start at 3 p.m. Please comeout and support kids helping kids. 9 Hole Executive CoursePro Shop - Camping Facilities - Licensed CafeteriaCome join us for some true Country Hospitality!!!

Welcome to the 2011 Golf Season! Although we had a slow start to the season, the weather has nally started to cooperate, and we

are ofcially up and running on all nine holes.

Enter our daily contest! Because of the loss of our bridges this spring, our 3rd hole is still inaccessible by land, so we are

accessing it by air! To explain, we have turned this hole into our contest hole, where you shoot a

numbered ball “through the air” from the 3rd tee. Whoever has the ball closest to the pin at the

end of the day, wins not only bragging rights, but our daily prize! And, until we get our third hole

back up to full capacity, we have kept our golng prices at our 2010 rates. It’s a win-win!!

We would also like to take this opportunity to welcome P.G.A. of Alberta Professional Phil Mc-

Cluskey and C.G.S.A. Superintendent Shawn Solberg, who have joined our team this year. Both

have years of experience in the golf industry, having worked at the Dinosaur Trail Golf Club.

Our Mens and Ladies leagues have also started. Mens league runs on Wednesday evening, and

Ladies is on Thursday nights. Call the pro shop for all the details.

Watch our website at www.rosebudgolf.ca for more news and updates, including the bridge

construction and the opening date from the kitchen.

Camping We are proud to have Steve O back this year as our campground manager. He does a wonderful

job keeping the campground in tip-top shape, and works hard to make sure everyone is comfort-

able. If you’re wondering what to do for a few days or a weekend, bring your friends camping.

We have group sites available, power to all our sites, re pits, showers, and rewood and ice for

sale. It’s not very far, but it’s a beautiful oasis away from it all. And you can golf, too!

We all need both energy and water. Water is a critical resource

and Encana takes a responsible approach to the water we use

in our drilling and completions operations. The water sources

we use vary from region to region depending on the local water

resources, geology and stakeholder feedback.

We also seek opportunities to use unutil ized sources of water.

Together with Apache, Encana recently received the Responsible

Canadian Energy Award from the Canadian Association of

Petroleum Producers (CAPP) for our development of the

Debolt Water Treatment Plant (located in the Fort Nelson

area of British Columbia). The plant uses saline water from

deep underground (water that is too poor a quality to be used

for drinking water or agriculture) for its hydraulic fracturing

operations, a key step in natural gas production in the area.

New housing costsDonella Swan

Times Contributor

A big challenge in the housing industry isGovernment-imposed charges or GIC’s. Thesecharges often seem minor. However, collectively they are signicantly increasing the cost of new housing, and increasing the cost to home buy-ers. These charges can come in a variety of fash-

ions development cost charges and lot levies,infrastructure-related charges, development ap-plication processing fees and building permits.

Along with these various charges and taxes,

GIC’s are adding to the heavy nancial burdenthat many home buyers are struggling to carry.  According to the Examination into Govern-

ment Imposed Charges on new Housing Con-struction report, municipal GIC’s on typical new houses in larger urban centers such as Surrey,B.C. ranged over $50,000; whereas in smaller centers across the country they were less than$5,000. The biggest inuential factor for infra-structure charges including “soft services” suchas educational and recreational facilities.  The ability to afford a home nowadays is a

concern for many people. Coming out of the re-cession, banks are stricter about the eligibility for borrowing loans. The cost of raw materials to

build a home has gone up substantially. Govern-ment regulations to build more energy-efcient

homes add to the cost. On top of it all, GIC’s andother charges and taxes all add to the pile.

“The amount of building has nearly come toa halt here and in other areas because of theseincreasing costs,” says Leanne Hilton, owner andPresident of Rich-Lee Custom Homes. This can be seen all over Strathmore and sur-

rounding area. Even existing properties are sit-ting on the market with no bids, thus makingthe demand for new developments very difcult.

“People think they’re getting ripped off. This just isn’t the case. It’s all the little costs like taxes, increased cost of raw materials and the expenseof energy efcient appliances and many other

factors that are contributing to the increased costof new homes. It trickles all the way down fromthe government to the consumerm” says Hilton. According to Hilton, it really becomes one vis-

cous circle. Taxes and charges that come directly from the government put a nancial burden on

builders and developers. These costs then haveto be passed on down to the consumer in order for builders and developers to make any kind of a living. These increased costs shy people away from

purchasing new homes, and the economy growsat a slower pace. It is GIC’s and other varioustaxes, charges and costs that are keeping devel-opers and builders from starting many new proj-ects in Strathmore and Wheatland County, saidHilton.

excitement. Parents, grand-parents and other specta-tors watched in anticipation.

The dark clouds rolling infrom the north held off longenough for the ball gamesto be played on June 1 – by

both the Peewee StrathmoreReds, and the Squirts girlsteam.  The Peewees were up

against Hussar.“We’ve had quite a few new

players this year, but they’renally coming around andplaying very well together,”said Naomi Hickey, manager of the team.

The peewees have beenplaying since May and havehad their ups and downs.

“They lost the rst threegames but tied againstDrumheller the day before”said Hickey. Jim Stevenson is the head

coach for the StrathmorePeewee Reds and has beendoing a great job with thekids.  While the Peewee Reds

were playing on one dia-mond, the Squirts girls team

was playing on another against the Calgary South

Bow River team.  They have played 16games so far this year, andare currently winning their division.

“They are playing ex-tremely well together andthey’ve been playing in Cal-gary most of the time andnot encountering any prob-lems” said Assistant CoachRob Pettifer.

Young soccer stars shine With a lot of kids new to thesport at the U8 level, the Al-berta Soccer Association (ASA)has re-structured its trainingmethod so that all kids get ex-posure to the ball, build betterteamwork and have more fun.n previous years the U4 to U8levels would have a little prac-tice time at the beginning of thehour and then play games forthe duration. ark Shorhen, president of Strathmore’s Soc-cer League, says that this lefta lot of kids behind and onlya few to shine. With the newstructure, which is based offof the training methods in Eu-rope, the kids will benet waymore. U8 has eight teams thisyear and they broken up intodifferent stations where they ei-ther have a practice game, skillbuilding or a fun station suchas Blob tag. The ASA hopes toimplement these training meth-ods into all levels up to U12.
