’’Several years ago, at a gathering of people starting the process toward ministry, I heard a clergy spouse recount the story of Abram and Sarai being called by the Lord. Genesis 12:1 records God’s words to the couple, “go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you.” The speaker then framed that story in the imagery of United Methodist clergy and clergy spouses, loading up moving vans and heading up the highway. The story of people going on a journey, being sent to another home, continues to this day and will far into the future.

Since I first heard the recounting of the

connection between Abram and the itinerate ministry, the metaphor of journey has become a consistent reminder of the way God works. God calls us to follow; God sends us to serve. For this season of time, I invite you to join me along this journey.

As Judy and I prepared to move to Bartlesville First Church, we heard from many people about the positive nature of the church and the community. Those words proved true today in worship as we encountered people excited about their church family, heard inspiring music, and worked along side a remarkable and gifted staff. I have a special appreciation for Rev. Tari Carbaugh and her leadership. Tari will be leading in worship the next two Sundays while Judy I and take a vacation in Colorado.

In 2008, The United Methodist Church identified four areas of focus based upon current trends. These areas were named to return the church to a movement rather than denomination. Utilizing Mike Slaughter’s book, The Passionate Church, we will work through these areas in a sermon series and look at how they might guide our own way forward at Bartlesville First Church. The four focal areas are: • Developing Principled Christian Leaders• Engaging in Ministry with the Poor• Creating New and Renewed Congregations• Improving Global Health

I look forward to the journey ahead!

Grace & peace,Greg Tener

MEMORIALSMARCH AND APRIL

ANIMAL MINISTRY MEETINGBartlesville First Church is known as the church with the animals. Pastor Tari has run the ministry for the past four years, and now it is time for the church to take over the planning and implementation of this unique ministry. Those interested in helping oversee the animal ministry, under Pastor Tari’s leadership, are invited to a meeting Thursday, June 14th at 6pm in the Lecture Hall/Choir Room. You don’t have to have previous experience or knowledge of livestock animals, just a passion for the ministry/animals and a willingness to learn. Please contact Pastor Tari via e-mail [email protected] or by calling 918-914-9001 if you have questions.

CELEBRATING WITH LOVEFourth of July bags for our homebound members are in the Atrium. The bags will remain there through the morning of July 1. Yourself, your family or your small group may fill the bags with items such as cards, hand written notes, non-perishable foods, candy, tea bags, chap-stick, travel size personal items, and other small gifts. Volunteers are needed to pick up bags and deliver them after church on July 1.

ALTAR FLOWERSWould you like to honor your mother or father on their birthday or anniversary with altar flowers in the sanctuary on Sunday? Would you like to rejoice in the graduation or the birthday of your son or daughter? Flowers are a beautiful way to honor the memory of a family member or special friend. You can give thanks to God and beautify our worship services by donating altar flowers for any Sunday you would like. Your name and the name of your honoree will printed in the Sunday bulletin and the biweekly Cornerstone, giving others a chance to know about the occasion. An added blessing of giving altar flowers is that after Sunday’s worship services, the flowers are divided, put into vases, and taken by our Caring Callers to hospitalized and home bound church members, brightening their lives! The donation price for each arrangement is $30, made payable to Bartlesville First Church. Call Wayne Ford at the church to put in your request.

SERVING LUNCH WITH CHRIST'S LOVEFirst Church volunteers serve lunch at Agape Mission on the first Friday of each month. You can volunteer from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The work is easy and the fellowship is fun! Starting in June we will be helping the third Friday of each month. Please contact Wayne McClain at [email protected] or 918-397-1314 if you would like to help. Wayne is currently seeking volunteers for June 15th and July 6.
