Visit us at www.CatholicsofPleasanton.org Pastor’s Corner My brothers and sisters, Last weekend at the 6:30 PM Mass (June 6), we blessed our graduates as they cross thresholds and commence on roads before them. This weekend, the high schools, the seniors and their families are celebrating commencement exercises. At different times in my life, I have crossed thresholds that are ritualized in commencement exercises. They have been academic and they have been vocational or sacred (like my ordination as a priest). For many of you, they have also been academic, vocational and even sacred, such as marriage. I might add that if you ask the adults who were baptized, confirmed and celebrated Eucharist for the time this past Easter, then they would say that they, too, have experienced a vocational threshold – a sacred commencement. In terms of everyday living, these experiences seemingly combine an “I can’t wait” in balance with “geez… what lies ahead?” Such experiences are blessings that capture life’s movements. We find ourselves at certain moments where we have an opportunity to see where we have been and to gaze at the horizon before us. Seize these opportunities. In the best of circumstances, these are grace-filled times. I also have been speaking with parishioners who are living a different type of commencement. Pastor’s Corner

My brothers and sisters,

Last weekend at the 6:30 PM Mass (June 6), we blessed our graduates as they cross thresholds and commence on roads before them.

They, too, are at a time when they can see where they have been and wonder where they are going. Some of our brothers and sisters are beginning new searches for employment. At present, they are not employed and seeking employment. They “can’t wait” to get the new job and they wonder “what lies ahead”. For them, the weight and gravity of the moment is real. What captures me is how some are taking this time as an opportunity to take inventory, assess direction and act deliberately. I’ve been sought out to walk with some of them as a sojourner so that a faith focus remains primary. Why primary? Because the first concern is rightly the health and vitality of their families and the immediate needs of food and shelter to sustain a family. The challenge is to do this through the lens of faith. I applaud those who want to keep faith first in their commencement.

Here’s the lens of faith. We commence with the full awareness that we are not alone, that Jesus is present in those who reach out to us to celebrate and in those who reach out to us in times of need. Let the presence of Christ in others celebrate you and walk with you. This is a fine line to walk. To be too proud means that I do not need others to laud what God has done through my best works or that I cannot admit when I might need the assistance of others. To be inappropriately humble means that I cannot accept ANY appreciation for being a good steward of God’s gifts or that I MUST suffer silently as part of God’s plan. Funny how excessive pride and false humility look the same in our behavior!!! In the end, we are the Catholic Community of Pleasanton and we celebrate each other and we support each other as life commences, as we cross thresholds.

To those graduating… on behalf of the parish congratulations. For all of us… the journey continues as we commence again and again.

Blessings,

Fr. Paul

Sunday Contributions On your check for your Sunday collection, please always indicate on the Memo area where to apply the contribution (1st Collection, Building Fund, Catholic Voice, etc.) and write the amount on the front of the envelope. This minimizes posting to the wrong account resulting in inaccurate statements and tax letters. Please use an envelope. We cannot be responsible for loose checks. Additional envelopes are available in the lobby of both churches, blue for the Building Fund and yellow for others. Please do not forget to write your name and envelope number on it.
