Principal’s Message
Graduation was on May 26, 2017. Congratulations to our graduates this year:
Kerry Adams, Lexi Hicks, and Chanel Simrose. Thank you to the community for
coming out to celebrate the accomplishments of these three young women. They
have all chosen to go on to post-secondary education in the fall – Kerry into nurs-
ing, Lexi into Policy Studies, and Chanel into Business. I would also like to thank
my staff for helping with the graduation preparation and the students who helped
set up chairs and helped with the cleanup. Our graduates received a gift from our
SCC. Thank you to our SCC for your support this year.
As always June is a busy month at school. Many events are planned for our
students – playdays, track and field meet, attending Shrek, camping for our older
students, awards day, and generally wrapping up the school year. Our students in
Grades 9 – 12 will be doing final exams June 23, 2017; June 26 – 28, 2017. We
would appreciate a note or a call to the office to let us know that your son or
daughter is allowed to leave the school grounds once they have completed their
exam.
At our last LIT meeting (May 15), we discussed the results from the post as-
sessment on the writing trait of Voice. We had students do this trait again to see if
students could get to the goal of 80%. The post assessment told us that students
are progressing, but did not quite get to 80%. For next year, our LIT will continue
to focus on writing using the writing traits. We will continue with word choice,
conventions, and sentence fluency.
The results from Our School Survey (2016-2017) are now posted on our school
website. It is from these documents that we will develop our school goals for the
fall of 2017. Overall, we have had a great year at school. We worked on our stu-
dent wellness goal throughout the year – lowering anxiety by creating a tool kit of
strategies for students to use. We have seen growth in our younger students in
their reading. Students in grades 1 – 3 are reading at or above grade level. Con-
gratulations staff and students. Be sure to continue reading over the summer!
On June 30, I will be retiring from teaching. I have spent 28 of my 31 years in
education at Mortlach School. I have had a satisfying career in the field of educa-
tion. Looking back, I have seen 232 students graduate from this school. I have
seen many staff come and go. I have enjoyed working with students and staff at
Mortlach. Thank you to the many people I have had the pleasure to work with
over the past 31 years. Thank you to the community of Mortlach for supporting
the school. It has always been appreciated. Finally, thank you to my current staff.
It has truly been a pleasure to work with each of you. You are a terrific team and
you made my job easier as the administrator. It is that team work that makes this
school a special place. Please welcome Mrs. Rayleen Eberl as the new administra-
tor of Mortlach School.
