Sunday, June 18, 2017 The Second Sunday after Pentecost – Father’s Day
9 AM – in the Fellowship Center
Welcome to St. Mark’s Episcopal Church We are glad you are here and hope you will return! Please make yourself at home and if you
need anything, just ask and someone will be glad to assist you. Don’t be surprised if folks
around you introduce themselves to you! Please introduce yourself to those around you and the
clergy after the service.
Restrooms for the Church are located in the Fellowship Center.
All baptized persons of any age are welcome to receive communion at our services. If you or
a family member are not baptized and would like to know more about joining the Church and
making a commitment to the Christian way of life, speak to the clergy or call the Church office.
Holy Baptism is the initiation by which we become members of Christ’s body, the Church, and
are invited to grow in love for God and service to others, supported by a spiritual family. St. Mark’s was founded and the historic Church was built in 1849. The students and
faculty of nearby St. James School built the church as a missionary effort and it was used as a
hospital following the battles of Antietam and Gettysburg. The balcony in the historic church
was restored in 2014 as a place of prayer and pilgrimage to honor the lives of our nineteenth
century African American members, both slave and free. The Fellowship Center was
completed in 2011 and hosts worship and gatherings for the community. St. Mark’s is part of
the Diocese of Maryland, a member of the Episcopal Church and the world-wide Anglican
Communion—those Churches born out of the Church of England. Of the world’s 2.2 billion
Christians, we are the third largest body.
We provide Gluten – Free Wafers & wine – Please inform the Priest of your

The First Lesson: Exodus 19:2-8a A Reading from the book of Exodus
When the people of Israel had journeyed from Rephidim, entered the wilderness of
Sinai, and camped in the wilderness: Israel camped there in front of the mountain.
Then Moses went up to God; the Lord called to him from the mountain, saying,
“Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob, and tell the Israelites: You have seen
what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you
to myself. Now therefore, if you obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be
my treasured possession out of all the peoples. Indeed, the whole earth is mine, but
you shall be for me a priestly kingdom and a holy nation. These are the words that
you shall speak to the Israelites.” So Moses came, summoned the elders of the
people, and set before them all these words that the Lord had commanded him. The
people all answered as one: “Everything that the Lord has spoken we will do.”
Reader The Word of the Lord!
People Thanks be to God! The Psalm: 100
1 Be joyful in the Lord, all you lands; serve the Lord with gladness
and come before his presence with a song.
2 Know this: The Lord himself is God; *
he himself has made us, and we are his;
we are his people and the sheep of his pasture. 3 Enter his gates with thanksgiving; go into his courts with praise; *
give thanks to him and call upon his Name.
4 For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting; *
and his faithfulness endures from age to age.
The Epistle: Romans 5:1-8 A Reading from Paul’s letter to the Church in Rome
Since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus
Christ, through whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand; and
we boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God. And not only that, but we also
boast in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance
produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us,
because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has
been given to us. For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the
5
ungodly. Indeed, rarely will anyone die for a righteous person—though perhaps for
a good person someone might actually dare to die. But God proves his love for us in
that while we still were sinners Christ died for us.

GOSPEL SEQUENCE Caribbean Hallelujah The Holy Gospel: Matthew 9:35-10:8
The Holy Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ According to Matthew
People Glory to you, Lord Christ!
esus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their
synagogues, and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and curing
every disease and every sickness. When he saw the crowds, he had
compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep
without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the
laborers are few; therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his
harvest.” Then Jesus summoned his twelve disciples and gave them authority over
unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to cure every disease and every sickness.
These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon, also known as Peter, and
his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John; Philip and
Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and
Thaddaeus; Simon the Cananaean, and Judas Iscariot, the one who betrayed him.
These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: “Go nowhere among
the Gentiles, and enter no town of the Samaritans, but go rather to the lost sheep of
the house of Israel. As you go, proclaim the good news, ‘The kingdom of heaven
has come near.’ Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons.
You received without payment; give without payment.”
The Gospel of the Lord!
People Praise to you, Lord Christ! The people sit for the Sermon
Children’s Sermon After the children’s sermon, our youngest children are invited to nursery time downstairs.
They will return for Holy Communion.

Sermon The Rev. Anne Weatherholt, Rector The Nicene Creed (said by all, standing as you are able)
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and
earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally
begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true
God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things
were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the
power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was
made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered
death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the
Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the
Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his
kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds
from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and
glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to
come. Amen.
The Prayers of the People, Form IV
Let us pray for the Church and for the world. (response after each petition)
Leader Lord, in your mercy
People Hear our prayer.
Silence
The Celebrant adds this concluding collect
Celebrant God of compassion, you have opened the way for us and
brought us to yourself. Pour your love into our hearts, that, overflowing with joy,
we may freely share the blessings of your realm and faithfully proclaim the good
news of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.
7
The Confession and Absolution Celebrant Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.
People Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned
against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we
have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not
loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.
For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that
we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name.
Amen.
Celebrant Almighty God, have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins
through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of
the Holy Spirit, keep you in eternal life. Amen. The Peace Celebrant The Peace of the Lord be always with you.
People And also with you! (please stand as you are able and greet one another in the name of the Lord)

UPDATE ON ORGANIST SEARCH
Anne+ has been spreading the word that we are looking for a new Organist and
Choir Director. She has interviewed a few candidates and has sent notices of the
opening to local universities and the American Guild of Organists. Please keep this
search process in your prayers. We are also seeking persons who can serve in interim or
substitute capacities over the summer. Since very few music students are studying the
organ, finding a new organist may take a while, but St. Mark’s is committed to
continuing our standard of excellence in church music and liturgy. If you have any
questions or suggestions, please contact the Rector, 301-582-0417.
CHRISTIAN FORMATION
Every baptized person is called to ministry. The Education for Ministry (EfM)
program provides people from all walks of life with the education “to be” Christians
and to carry out their ministry. All Christians need education which supports their faith
and prepares them to express that faith in day-to-day settings. EfM is a worldwide
program developed by the School of Theology of The University of the South. The
curriculum supports the conviction that the foundation for bringing Christ to the world
lies in a church empowered by an active, theologically articulate laity. EfM is a four year
program, committed one year at a time, containing studies of the Old Testament, the New
Testament, church history, and theological and moral choices. The format includes small
seminar groups in size from 6 to 12 students, trained mentors and thought-provoking
texts, theological reflection practiced regularly, and prayer and worship in a community
of study. A new EfM group is being formed and will begin on Tuesday nights in
September. There is a tuition and book fee for the class. If you need help with this cost,
please speak to Anne+. Classes meet at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Hagerstown. For
more information, contact Sue Wert at 443-838-1671.
You may also want to look into EfM online, efm.sewanee.edu/efm-online.
