Christ waits for us as we work, as we play, and as we sleep. He is ever there, patient and at the ready. There is never a time in our lives that Christ is not present for us to turn to even in our darkest of times. The Lord is faithful, true to His promises, and persistent in His search for His prodigal people. We have but to turn to Him even in our sinfulness and He will be there for us. The presence of Christ in our lives never takes a more meaningful form than that of His Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity that we receive in the Holy Eucharist. The Communion line offers us a wonderful analogy of how Christ abides with His people in our lives. The procession that we partake in on our way to receive the Eucharist should be a time of prayer, praise and worship. We reflect on the areas of our lives that need more Christ in them. We celebrate with our fellow worshipers the life giving food that we are about to receive, the food that gives us life eternal. We receive the Eucharist with a reverence and awe due to our Creator and King, and we do all of this together as that other body of Christ, His Church, His people. After the Mass is completed the words “go in peace” reach our ears, urging us to take Christ out into the world and for us to be Christ for all of those that we meet on our path. This celebration of the Body and Blood of Christ is the celebration of our faith at its pinnacle, in what Vatican II called, “the source and summit” of our spiritual lives. May we be worthy of such a gift and may we be thankful to God for this treasure. Amen.

PASTOR’S MESSAGE

For many of us, a model of a good or great father comes easily to mind. We see the face, remember the touch and hear the voice of our own father. It is true that we learn the meaning of “fatherly strength, fatherly virtue, fatherly love” from experience and our own reflection upon it. Whatever size, shape, color or heritage our father’s had, they modeled certain characteristics that have a universal relevance and wisdom. Among the virtues that come to mind for me are dependability and duty, patience and availability, life experience and optimism, truthfulness and simplicity.

In the spirituality of our church, there are not many men, with the exception of Saint Joseph, who have been reverenced specifically because they were good fathers. For them, the way of holiness was the way of fatherhood. To put it another way, they fathered their way into heaven. One of these fathers who have always meant a lot to me was Louis Martin, the father of Saint Therese of Lisieux. He was a watchmaker, father of a large family and a loving husband to his wife Zelie. Biographers describe him as patient, hardworking and devout. It is not; however, these virtues that mean so much to me as the trust that he had in God’s providence and the freedom that he gave his children to follow their dreams. In the case of Therese, it was freedom to follow her visions.

Louis listened to his youngest daughter when at fourteen she felt called to live a cloistered life as a Carmelite nun. He was not crazy about the idea but realized that there was something going on that was special and unique in Therese’s passion and zeal for the conversion of sinners and for the missions. He took her to see Pope Leo XIII who told them “If it is God’s will, you will enter”. She entered the next year at age fifteen.

Her “Little Way” of holiness, of doing even the most humble things with extraordinary love and attentiveness to God’s will became a spiritual way for millions. Her favorite quote from Saint John of the Cross, “Love is repaid by love alone”, is the perfect summary of her life and teaching. It was undoubtedly her father’s love but also his trust in God and his respect for freedom that set Therese free and allowed the “Little Flower” to flourish. Louis’s virtue and that of his wife Zelie were recognized when they were both canonized as saints. They are both extraordinary models of nurturing parents and are an inspiration for us during this time of Mothers and Fathers Days.

MIAMI/ACROSS THE ATLANTIC - MONDAY, OCTOBER 16 Depart from Miami today aboard your transatlantic jet flight. En-route enjoy dinner followed by a full length movie.

ARRIVE SEVILLE - TUESDAY, OCTOBER 17 Arrive today in the beautiful southern city of Seville. Situated on the banks of the Guadalquivir River in the region of Andalucía, Seville has a rich Moorish heritage. It is most famously known as the birth-place of Flamenco. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel. (D)

SEVILLE - WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 18 This morning visit Alcazar Palace and the ornate cathedral with Columbus' tomb and Giralda Tower. Also see Maria Luisa Park, City Hall, the Gold Tower and the area of the April Fair described by Hemingway. The afternoon is free. You may want to wander out tonight and experience one of Seville’s many local establishments where you can enjoy Flamenco dancing. (B)

SEVILLE/CORDOBA/COSTA DEL SOL - THURSDAY, OCTOBER 19 This morning’s journey takes you to Cordoba. On your orientation tour you will see the historic quarter, a beautiful network of small streets and squares all arranged around the city’s impressive Mezquita, one of the most famous buildings in the world and origi-nally one of the most important mosques in the world. In the after-noon, continue south to your hotel in the elegant Costa del Sol area for the overnight. (B,D)

COSTA DEL SOL/ GRANADA - FRIDAY, OCTOBER 20 This morning drive to the 8th century Moorish stronghold of Granada in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Range. Your sightseeing in Granada includes visits to the Generalife, summer palace of Moorish princes, plus the Alhambra, an ornate, Arabesque confection in pink granite built in the mid-14th century. (B,D)

GRANADA/TOLEDO/MADRID - SATURDAY, OCTOBER 21 Today you drive past the many olive and orange groves of the rolling Andalusian hills and then through the barren landscapes of Don Quixote's La Mancha as you head northwards to Toledo. The ancient Castilian capital sits high on a hilltop ringed by Visigoth walls and circled by a loop of the Tagus River resembling a moat. Visit the 13th century Cathedral containing priceless jeweled chalices and paintings before driving to Madrid. (B,D)

MADRID/AVILA/MADRID - SUNDAY, OCTOBER 22 This morning on a tour of Madrid see the white-trimmed 2,800 room Royal Palace, and the exquisite gardens that surround it. Other highlights include the Puerta del Sol, Cervantes Memorial, the Plaza de España and the acacia-lined Castellana. Then visit the Prado Museum, housing a collection of masterpieces by Spain's artists Velazquez, Goya and El Greco. In the afternoon you’ll travel north to the walled city of Avila where St. Teresa founded the Order of Carmelites. Visit the Monastery of the Incarnation, where Teresa entered Carmel, made her Solemn Profession, and lived for the next 25 years. Also, visit the foundation of the reform, St. Joseph Monas-tery. See the beautiful Plaza de Santa Teresa and other sites con-nected with her life before returning to Madrid for overnight. (B)

MADRID - MONDAY, OCTOBER 23 Today is completely at leisure to experience this bustling Spanish capital on your own. Relax at one of the many outdoor cafes in the Plaza Mayor, stop by the Market of San Miguel for some shopping, visit one of Madrid’s many museums or spend the time in spiritual reflection at one of the ornate basilicas or churches that this city is so well known for. (B)

MADRID/ZARAGOZA/BARCELONA - TUESDAY, OCTOBER 24 Today you will travel from Madrid to Barcelona via Zaragoza where you will make a brief stop to view the cathedral. (B,D)

BARCELONA - WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 25 Barcelona, the cultural and political center of Catalonia and Spain’s most European city, is divided into two major parts: the older area symbolized by the Gothic Quarter and the more modern part with its wide avenues. This morning enjoy a city tour including a visit to the Gothic Quarter. See the Gothic palaces of the Government of Catalonia and the City Hall, the world famous Cathedral with its fine medieval cloister and arcades, and view from the outside the towering La Sagrada Familia Church designed by the Catalonian architect Antoni Gaudí. Begun in 1882, the church is still under construction today. This afternoon drive to the dramatically set 12th century Benedictine Archabbey of Montserrat. Perched high on sheer rock rising abruptly from the Catalonian plain, it is the spiritual heart of Catalonia. Visit the royal Basilica where you will see the venerated 6th century statue of the Black Madonna, Our Lady of Montserrat. The church of the Archabbey, the royal Basilica, is magnificent as are the grounds around it. Return to Barcelona. (B)

BARCELONA - THURSDAY, OCTOBER 26 Enjoy a full day at leisure to further explore this magnificent city on your own. You may wish to do more sightseeing, get in some last-minute shopping, simply relax or stroll along the famous tree-lined avenue, Las Ramblas. (B)

If it were right and fi tting to pay tribute to all Mothers, equally it is right and fi tting to pay tribute to all Fathers. And we should do this not just on their assigned feast days but preferably as long as they live as a sign of our love and gratitude for all they have done in our lives. “When Israel was a child, I loved him... I taught Ephraim to walk... It was I who healed them. I led them with cords of human kindness, with ties of love... and I bent down to feed them.” HOSEA 11:1-4

According to common practices, it is still the necktie that is the top priority gift followed by wrist watches, wallets, electronic devices, and sports-related items. Yes, no doubt, these gifts are truly fi ne and appreciable but there is still a better gift: A NOVENA OF MASSES thus ensuring them of eternal riches where no moth could destroy nor thieves could steal. Your generous offering of a special remembrance in prayer and Holy Mass on the occasion of Father’s Day will serve to show our appreciation and support to our Dads. Please pick up an envelope at the church credenzas, fi ll them in and place in the collection basket or bring them into the Parish Offi ce.

POPE FRANCIS’ PRAYER INTENTIONS

FOR THE MONTH OF MAYNational Leaders.

That national leaders may firmly commit themselves to ending the arms trade, which victimizes so

many innocent people.

HOME CONNECTION:As we celebrate Fathers’ Day, by honoring our fathers, grandfathers, and father figures important to us, we cannot forget Saint Joseph, husband of Mary, guardian of Jesus, and patron saint of the universal Church.

Fathers can look to Saint Joseph as an example and inspiration of husband and father. Pope Leo XIII wrote a beautiful Encyclical on devotion to St. Joseph in which he included a prayer to be recited after the Rosary.

We can show our love to our fathers with gifts and cookouts. But there is one very beautiful way to show our love, and that is by praying for our fathers, grandfathers and father figures. Pray that St. Joseph will protect them and guide them, so that, as the prayer says “following thine example and strengthened by thy help, we may live a holy life, die a happy death, and attain to everlasting bliss in Heaven.”

STEP 1 Gather your information about your assets, including retirement funds, bank accounts and real property.

STEP 2 Choose the type of bequest you’d like to make.1. Unrestricted bequest. This is a donation to be used for St. Joan of Arc general funds. This donation would be used where it is most needed.2. Restricted bequest. This donation specifies how the money is to be used. (This could be restricted to go into the endowment, a specific ministry, or the building fund.)A bequest can be made in a number of ways:• A specific dollar amount.• Specific assets, such as securities, real estate, or tangible property.• Retirement account assets, consisting of any benefits remaining in your retirement plan.• A residuary bequest, St. Joan of Arc receives all or a percentage of your estate after all other obligations are met.• An existing will or trust can be easily amended to include a gift to St. Joan of Arc without rewriting the entire document. Your attorney can prepare a simple document, called a codicil, which adds a new bequest while reaffirming the terms of your will. Similarly, an attorney can prepare an amendment to a revocable trust to add St. Joan of Arc.

STEP 3 Meet with your estate planning attorney. If you need to create a will or just update your existing document, you’ll want to get advice from your estate planning attorney.

An attorney can advise you as to the best way to structure your will in order to take care of your loved ones first and then your charitable interests while assuring the best tax benefits.

As a charitable, not-for-profit all bequests to St. Joan of Arc are fully deductible for estate tax purposes.

STEP 4 Contact us.We acknowledge and welcome donors into our Arc Angel Society. Members are invited to special member events and receive special mailings. (We also recognize and respect the wishes of anyone that wishes to remain anonymous.)
