Juntos, all together, ensemble, alleszusammen, spolecne, spolu, hep birlikte,

, ek dilane,

On 1 May 2004 another 10 members joined the European Union, which is now comprisedof 25 member-states. Unlike other great nations, as for example, the United States, this“New Europe” has to face the difficulty of communication between so many people fromjust as many different countries, cultures and languages. But the fact that these differencesexist shows the great wealth that this New Europe possesses.

The Grupo Antolin is present in many countries in the world, so it, too, has to overcomethe cultural and language differences and in turn benefit from the wealth that these dif-ferences represent. Efficient communication and mutual understanding are essential for usall to work together, and this is the main internal challenge that we have to face.

It is a well-known fact that people understand each other when they really want to under-stand each other and they do everything necessary to understand each other when theycan see a clear advantage in this. The same occurs in our Company; we really make aneffort to understand each other when we can see a common and specific interest. Thenwe accept others’ viewpoints and the way they work, we accept the difference and weunderstand that this is where our success lies.

Integrating our differences in a common objective must be approached with an openmind. When we are aware that there are good things everywhere and that there can begood ideas everywhere, we understand that we can and we must all learn from others.

Too often in our conversations, we underscore how difficult it is to work with a depart-ment, with a factory, or with a specific territory, and above all outside Burgos. Too oftenwe hear how difficult it is to work with Head offices.

All of us, Factories, Territories, Grupo Antolin Headquarters, must progress in our mutualunderstanding: Head offices must accept decentralisation as a success factor with respectto our customers, and the territories and factories must understand that a modicum of dis-cipline is required, and a common base to built our exchanges upon.

We also have some of the best tools on the market for sharing information such asIntranet, Databases, etc. These tools must be used in order not to invent again what oth-ers have already invented elsewhere.

The quality of the ideas or of the actions is much more important than where they come from.

Let’s all work together to grow together. In this way, we will guarantee a common future. ■

ON THE COVER

CarbonNanofibres

In 1999, Grupo Antolin, together with CSIC (Higher Centre for Scientific Research) andCIDAUT (Centre for Automotive Research and Development), began a research projectto manufacture Carbon nanofibres, also known as s-VGCF (Sub-micron Vapor Grown

Carbon Fibers). The “Carbon Nanofibre” cell began with a pilot plant located in Coslada(Madrid), where the first furnace used to produce these nanofibres was constructed.

WHAT ARE THEY?

Carbon Nanofibres are highly-graphitic discontin-uous carbon fibres manufactured in lengths thatvary from 20 to 200 microns and with diame-ters of between 30 and 400 nanometres. Theyhave excellent properties, and we can highlighttheir high mechanical resistance as well as theirexcellent electrical and thermal conductivity.

Carbon nanofibres have been known for a longtime. In 1889, Hughes and Chambers patent-ed their growth based on gases that containedcarbon using a metal melting pot as a catalystsource. Until the eighties, studies on these fibres

were dedicated more to explaining the mecha-nisms of growth rather than to mass production. It is at that time when different Japanese andAmerican companies decided to invest in theindustrial-scale manufacture of these fibres, due to the knowledge they had acquired by thenand to the excellent engineering properties ofcarbon nanofibres, as this is a unique material be-cause of its combination of adequate proper-ties for many applications.

Currently, s-VGCF technology is still in an emerg-ing phase with a small number of companiesall over the world that manufacture and sell rela-tively small quantities of s-VGCF nanofibre of sim-ilar characteristics.

HOW ARE THEYOBTAINED?

These fibres are the result of the reaction of sev-eral components, such as metal catalytic parti-

cles or seeds, carbon and hydrogen. All of thisreacts in an furnace at more than 1000 ºC andat the end of the process the nanofibre, as seenin the photograph, is obtained. The nanofibreswill be untangled later to be able to distrib-ute them on the plastic.

RESEARCH ANDDEVELOPMENT

Following an ADE (Agency for Econom-ic Development) subsidy granted by theJunta of Castile and Leon in 2002amounting to 576,651.53 euros, the pi-lot plant located in Coslada was movedto the Grupo Antolin Eurotrim facilities, where an extension has been carried out.We have two furnaces: a metallic one thatcame from Coslada and a second furnacewith an improved new design in which allthe experience accumulated over the lastfew years has been put into practice. Thislatter furnace has the capacity to con-

tinuously produce carbon nanofibres onan industrial scale. The manufacture andinstallation of this new furnace endedin November 2003.

Currently, an excellent quality nanofibreis being produced, which is very similarto that produced by a few North Americanand Japanese companies. The price per-spectives of the nanofibres produced byGrupo Antolin are significantly lower thanthe prices of the competitor companies, due to the use of less expensive raw mate-rials. This is a very important milestone forthe project, as, in order to introduce thismaterial into the car industry, the final priceto be reached must not exceed 30 €/kg.

The final aim of this project is to pro-duce plastics filled with carbon nanofibreso that they do not deform with heat, with improved mechanical properties andsuitable electrical and thermal conductiv-ity to manufacture parts for the auto-motive sector such as:

· Fuel tanks and lines.

· Underhood parts.

· Paintable outside parts,... (bumpers, fu-

el tank covers, handles, rearview mir-ror casing,...)

The project is now in the research phaseof the compound materials (polymericmatrix + carbon nanofibre charge). Partof the effort is being focused on get-ting these compounds to have high me-chanical properties. It is also being stud-ied how to achieve even distributionwithin the plastic to reach good electri-cal and/or thermal conductivity. GrupoAntolin is collaborating with Universities

and Technological Centres, as well aswith some strategically important com-panies, including some large car man-ufacturers.

The first sales of carbon nanofibres havebeen made over the last few months. Al-though, in principle the amounts are notvery large, they have great strategicmeaning. These first sales have been tovery important international companies, engaged mainly in the manufacture ofconductor plastic (see enclosed table). ■

The 3rd International Conference onnanotechnology business,Nanobusiness 2004”. has recentlytaken place in New York. Thisconference is one of the mostimportant events of this industry and itis focused on informing about the rapidgrowth experienced by thenanotechnology industry.

Companies from many different sectorsattended the conference, all of theminterested in “nanotechnology”.

One of the guest speakers was ourcolleague, Cesar Merino, leader of theCarbon Nanofibre manufacturingproject. His presentation was based oninforming those present about ourproduct.

The result of his presentation was verypromising for the project as many ofthose present showed great interest inthe use of Grupo Antolin CarbonNanofibres (GANF) for differentindustrial applications.

NanoDynamics Inc., USGlobalNanospace,International Association ofNanotechnology, Inc, Praxair, Inc,Nanofilm, Thomson Scientific,...are someof the companies interested.

FOCUS ON

We cannot (nor must we) ignore this real-ity, so, through this report, we will try to givea brief description of this interesting mar-ket, touching on the recent history of Chi-na, the car market in this country and final-ly our experience and projects.

BRIEF HISTORY OF THECHINESE ECONOMY(1949-2003)

On 1 October 1948, Mao Tse Tung pro-claimed the Popular Republic of China inPeking, and the Chinese Communist Par-ty came to effective power in 1949.

After the death of Mao, in 1976, there wasa change in the economic ideas of the Chi-nese government, with more practical ap-

proaches, and both the technological andcommercial opening to the exterior began.

It gradually opened its economy to foreigntrade and it was after the eighties whenthe “ special economic areas” were fos-tered. The result of these reforms is thestrong growth of the industrial productionand a striking increase of exports. Thenegative side was the high inflation, withlarge regional imbalances and growing in-equality in income distribution. As a re-sult, new policies were drafted at the endof the eighties.

All of this, together with the unemploy-ment and cut in social earnings, caused aclimate of social agitation and extreme ten-sion, which led to continuous studentdemonstrations. On 4 June 1989 the mas-sacre of the Square of Tiananmen (Peking)took place. Here, thousands of young peo-

ple got together on a regular basis to de-mand freedom of press, the resignation ofDeng Ziaoping, condemning the grow-ing corruption and standstill of the reform.

Following the death of Deng Ziaoping inFebruary 1997, important reforms werepromoted to relieve the State of the loadof the State companies, which, until then, had registered losses, giving them greaterfinancial independency. The agriculturalsector was reorganised, the services sec-tor was boosted, infrastructures, the so-cial security system and the labour marketreform were developed. A progressivetransformation of public companies hasalso been detected.

Recently it has entered the WTO, theOlympic Games will be held there in 2008and the Universal Exposition of Shang-hai in 2010.

China…a market with a future,

and present...Lately, news of any kind that refers in some way to China is constant. Its spectacular economicgrowth reflects a reality that makes its economy comparable today with the American andEuropean economies. Nobody doubts the tremendous potential of its domestic market, butnowadays it has become a tremendously competitive exporter on a worldwide level.

Page 9: June 2004 · nº 38 Carbon - Grupo Antolin

Looking towards the future, it is foreseenthat China will maintain an average eco-nomic growth rate of 6% during the firsttwo decades of this century, and theWorld Bank predicts that the GNP of theChinese economy will reach that of theUS in 2015.

In addition, if the forecasts of the IMFare fulfilled, China will become the firstworld power in five years time.

But there are also important risks suchas the enormous gap between poor andrich regions, the liberalisation of the fi-nancial markets and arrears in debt, en-vironmental aspects, the developmentof regional independence opposed tocentralism, etc.

AUTOMOTIVE SECTORIN CHINA

If we consider the increase in car pro-duction from the year 1998 to 2003 (from484,000 to 2,100,000 units), we canunderstand the evolution followed by theautomotive industry in China.

The global OEM forecasts foresee thatsales will reach 5 million in 2010. Thiswould convert China into the third worldproducer, behind the United States andJapan.

Car producers (OEMs) have entered Chi-na through joint ventures with local com-panies, given the legal requirements that

force the Foreign Investor to let the Lo-cal Associate have at least a 50% par-ticipation in the JV.

Until the year 2003, thirteen OEMsformed more than 20 joint ventures toproduce cars in China. Apart from this, there are more than a dozen local produc-ers operating in the country.

With respect to Global Producers in Chi-na, it is important to point out that prac-tically all of them are already presentand those that are still not (such as Re-nault) have already announced theirplans for the future in this market. Itmust be highlighted that VW has been(and still is) the constructor with thegreatest market share, although it is im-portant to point out that they have 2 dif-ferent corporations (FAW-VW andShanghai VW), which, in fact, are clear-ly competitors.

To conclude this section, we can men-tion several points that will conditionthe future, such as the presumable ex-cess capacity installed, the local produc-ers that are still present and with signsof continuing to be well-situated es-pecially for low ranges, the pressure onprices to go down, the sophisticationand diversification that the automotivemarket will undergo. Furthermore, theproblem of “Copyright (IPR)” standsout as one of the greatest risks. Eventhough a legislation exists, this is notsufficiently backed by the Chinese Gov-ernment.

GRUPO ANTOLIN IN CHINA

In May 2001, we began our rapproche-ment to the Chinese market through aTechnology Transfer Agreement with alocal company, Jixiang Automobile(JARC), located in the Shanghai area. Thiscompany belongs to one of the large Chi-nese groups, SAIC, which is, in turn, anassociate of VW and GM. This agree-ment enabled us to discover the evolu-tions of this market from a privileged po-sition. However, we were already think-ing about our next step, having ourindustrial presence in this country.

To achieve this, last year we reinforcedthe presence of the Grupo Antolin in Chi-na, opening a Representation Office inShanghai and hiring Kevin Zhang, whotoday is our top person in China.

After studying different possibilities of In-dustrial presence in the country, we final-ly decided to access the Chinese mar-ket independently, trying to minimiseinvestments, and with the help of a con-sultant with a lot of experience in thecountry and sector. This consultantwarned about the majority tendency offoreign companies to access the Chinesemarket by own investment, and the sta-tistics that indicate a high rate of fail-ures of joint ventures, due mainly to theattempt to implement western ways andsystems without bearing in mind the cul-tural differences.

Well, we are very pleased to inform youthat we have already obtained the firstorders for headliners for this new experi-ence and that in the month of March thisyear, we signed the agreement to rentthe industrial plant, located in the Areaof Waigana, which is situated within theso-called Auto Park, where Shanghai VWis also located. The Grupo Antolin willstart to produce the first headliners thereduring the first months of the comingyear. Currently, we are in the processof registering the company in China (atask, which, as you can imagine, is quitecomplicated).

Apart from this project, which is alreadya reality, it is important to point out thatthe commercial activity is intense, not on-ly in the HEADLINER area, but also in oth-er products such as WINDOW-WINDERS,PANELS and SEATS. In fact, we can tellyou that we are having conversationswith an important Chinese group in or-der to create a new plant, in this caseto manufacture window-winders, whichwould be situated in Changchung (NorthChina). We are also having talks with an-other Chinese group to collaborate inseats for Mercedes.

Another aspect, which we wish to high-light and which must not disappear in-to oblivion, is the need to reinforce ourPurchasing activity in China in order notonly to work on possible locations of ma-terials for future manufacturing process-

es, but also to contemplate all the oppor-tunities that might arise in a market suchas the Chinese one, related to compo-nents that can be exported from Chinato other manufacturing points of theGrupo Antolin.

A lot of Spanish companies still consid-er that the Chinese market is a long wayaway, and that it has an emerging “re-turn” economy similar to Brazil or Mex-ico. However, we would like to quote theChairman of VW for Asia Pacific, whosaid in 1996 “The question is not the riskto invest in China, but the great risk ofnot doing so”.

We are sure that with your particular col-laboration and with the help of the wholeorganisation in general we will be able tomake this adventure a success. ■

DESIGNING THE FUTURE

Overhead ConsolesGrupo Antolin, in its constant effort to maintain its leadership in the headliner product,

faces new challenges unknown to date.

Motor shows have shown, either through themanufacturers or design studies, that markettendencies are aiming at a new future, theintegration of new functions in headliners:Overhead Systems, as the storage spaces insidethe vehicle are becoming more and more limit-

ed. The new consoles aim at the modularity ofits different components.

Modularity in headliners, understood as group-ing together small elements in one single unit, has given way to large structures, with large

Page 13: June 2004 · nº 38 Carbon - Grupo Antolin

june 2004 · news grupo antolin 13

storage places that integrate different mul-timedia elements (DVD, home link,...) .

The unit must be styled in such a way thatit harmonises with the interior. The user mustnot view it as a storage unit but as a newfunction. The unit can be a continuation ofthe panels, the design can play with dif-ferent textures and even different materialsthat provide many sensations when touched.

The possible application to different headlin-er architectures means that the console canhave different formats and configurations.Currently, these go from the classical lightconsole to the larger-sized ones, which aremore complicated from the viewpoint of de-velopment and number of components.

Functional lighting is no longer understoodonly as such; now its aim is to provide theclient with feelings of space and warmth.Longitudinal lighting bands, large-capacitydiodes in different colours and electrolu-miniscent screens are some of the elementsused to achieve these ends.

From a technical viewpoint the challengesposed are attractive and very suggestive.Rigid structures are sought, for exam-ple, to support static loads at high tem-peratures, about 110ºC. At the sametime, these structures must be sufficient-ly ductile to have an appropriate energyabsorption capacity. At times, materialsuch as magnesium plays an importantrole for several reasons; high elementintegration capacity and easy recyclabili-ty. Its acknowledged lightness must notbe forgotten either, which is an espe-

cially important aspect in the upper areaof the vehicle, which has a great influenceon its steering performance.

The human team that is going to ap-proach these projects, includes profes-sionals from different disciplines, such asindustrial design, CAD/CAE, industrialisa-tion, materials, static and dynamic sim-ulations, safety (“Head Impact”), valida-tion, design of prototypes. It also has thesupport of other experts who are alwayswilling to give their best in each project.

IN PICTURE

Grupo Antolin- Martorell was incorporat-ed in 1981 as Grupo Antolin- Sadita. Itjoined the group in 1984 and since themit has been engaged in the manufactureof acoustic absorbents for several sectors, one of them being the automotive sector.

In 2001 a new production plant was cre-ated, strategically located next to SEATMartorell and its name was changed.

In mid-2003 work was begun for SEAT,sequencing the headliners of all the mod-els and in December 2003, assembling

and sequencing of the doors for the newSEAT MPV “SEAT ALTEA”, which cameout onto the market in April last.

The Seat ALTEA has just been launchedonto the market as a car that offers a bitmore. It is configured as the first model ofa renewed range under the criteria ofSportsmanship, Versatility and Innovation.(MSV - Multi Sports Vehicle).

The parts from different companies of theGroup and from outside suppliers aregrouped together at Grupo Antolin Mar-

torell, and the door and headliner mod-ules for the SEAT ALTEA are assembledand sequenced, following the “Just inTime” philosophy.

Grupo Antolin has installed some as-sembly lines in Martorell, for the SEAT AL-TEA, where it has applied all theexperience it has acquired in lines de-signed for the JIT supply of both DTM’sand Headliners.

There are four DTM assembly and se-quencing lines (one for each door of the

vehicle). These lines are grouped togeth-er into two islands, (right and left). Thefront and rear DTMs, corresponding toeach side of the car, are mounted at eachisland. Furthermore, there is a headlin-er assembly and sequencing line for thesame Altea vehicle.

The number of personnel has increasedconstantly as the number of units man-ufactured of the ALTEA model has in-creased, according to the launch curveforeseen. Thus, the staff has gone from65 people in December 2003 to 186 peo-

ple in May this year, when the full produc-tion rate of 500 vehicles a day wasreached.

From September onwards, the aforemen-tioned production lines will assume thevolumes of the new Toledo, so the pro-duction of these lines, at full rate, willreach 800 vehicles a day.

The later evolution of the lines, vis-à-vis the production of the new Leonmeans that the production capacitiesof DTMs at Grupo Antolin Martorell

will reach the 1300 vehicles a day fore-seen. The most important task hasbeen to create a team and to organ-ise the factory to produce this modelunder the best conditions. To achievethis, head offices in Burgos and otherJIT factories of Grupo Antolin have pro-vided valuable collaboration and expe-rience.

The improvement is constant due to theenthusiasm of the people who are partic-ipating in the launch and manufacture ofthis New SEAT Model. ■

Long before becoming the vehicle makethat we know today, Peugeot started in1812 as a steel factory, but it was in 1889when Armand Peugeot ventured out witha steam-engine driven tricycle, called Ser-pollet-Peugeot followed by 4 units of thefirst oil-engine car: Modèle 2.

In 1895, the Peugeot range had 11 “mass”produced vehicles, when Modèle 8 wonthe first world timed race Paris-Bordeaux-Paris and where Edouard Michelin testedhis first tubed tyres. The following year, en-gines were began to be manufactured atAudincourt, a new factory covering a sur-face area of 50,000 m2, and in 1900, 500cars a year were assembled

In 1913, Peugeot won the 500 miles of In-dianapolis, beating the average speedrecord, travelling at more than 171 kilo-metres per hour. The manufacture ofthe “Bebe”, developed by a young engi-neer, Ettore Bugatti, began, incorporatingdrum brakes on the rear wheels for thefirst time. Peugeot then employed 2,500workers and produced 10,000 vehicles ayear at 4 plants.

In August 1915 Armand Peugeot died, leaving the make to his nephews.

To come out of the patch caused by theFirst World War, Peugeot launched theQuadrilette and in 1928, chain productionbegan at Sochauz-Montbéliard. This in-vestment helped prevent the bankrupt-cy that affected many manufacturers atthat time due to the financial crisis.

From 1933 onwards and following the 201and 301 models, the numbering knowntoday began, where the first figure indi-cates the series, the last the chronology

within the series and everything is articu-lated around the middle zero. The 301Eclipse was the first car with a retractableheadliner, copied by Ford in the fifties andMercedes in the nineties and which it re-turned to in 1998 with the 206CC.

During the Second World War, the Sochauxfactory was destroyed by the RAF to sab-otage the plans of the occupation forcesbut it was relaunched in 1946 with 9,400workers and 14,000 units manufactured.

In 1948 the 203 came out. This was thefirst model with self-bearing body(700,000 units manufactured until 1960),followed in 1955 by the 403, the first col-laboration with the firm, Pininfarina (morethan 1 million units manufactured).

In 1960, the first direct injection engine, mounted on the 404, came out, followedby the 204, the first front-wheel drive car ofthe make and then the legendary 504. Peu-geot then reached an annual production ofmore than 500,000 vehicles in 8 factories.

In 1976, Peugeot bought Citroën and in1978 the 3 subsidiaries of Chrysler in Eu-rope (SIMCA, Sunbeam and Talbot) aswell as the relative plants, becoming thePSA Group. The history of Citroën willbe discussed in another bulletin.

After a few difficult years, the 205 wasborn with the famous T16, which wonthe World Rally in 1985 and the Paris-Dakar in 1987, date when the 405 cameout, car of the year in Europe in 1988.

Then the Peugeot number “twenty mil-lion” was manufactured.

The 6 series prolonged the success of the5 series, and between 1991 and 1998 itpresented models with as much produc-tion as the 306 (2.8 million), 406 (morethan 3 million) and the 206, the top carmost sold in Europe after 2002. Nowthe 7 series has arrived, which shows thegood health of the PSA Group.

SHORT NEWS

GrupoAntolinparticipatedin the XIIIndustrialShowGrupo Antolin was present atthe XII INDUSTRIAL SHOWthat took place at the Hig-her Polytechnic College ofBurgos. For this purpose astand was set up in the mar-quee from 3 to 7 March, where we presented the ge-neral lines of our activity.

This show was inauguratedon 3 March last, with the pre-sence of the mayor of Bur-gos, Juan Carlos Aparicio, aswell as the city Treasury coun-cillor and the main authoritiesof the University of Burgosand Polytechnic College.

Different conference cycles, technical days and coursesare always carried out duringthe Industrial Show, whichis held every two years. All ofthis is focused at the studentsbeing able to enter into con-tact with companies with aview to them joining the la-bour market in the future.

Grupo Antolin’s relationshipwith the Universities, where itis present, has always beenvery close. It collaborates byteaching and participatingin conferences and exhibi-tions, among other activities.

Highlight the execution of 12joint research projects, 20end-of-degree projects ca-rried out in 2003 and 18 cu-rrently being developed. ■

Have an influenceon others...“Ulysses, the king of Itha-ca, entrusted the wise Men-tor to care for his sonTelemachus and to takecharge of his education, dur-ing his absence...”

The enormous talent that thepeople of the Grupo Antolinpossess as well as the enor-mous range of skills, our abil-ity to learn, to relevantly useexperience... has led to theMentoring project in ourcompany. This is a guidance, teaching and support processbetween two people whereknowledge and wisdom are

exchanged in favour of devel-opment.

We will continuously incor-porate more and more peo-ple into this new challengeof transferring competenciesand “know-how”.

The Palace of Saldañuela inBurgos, was the frameworkchosen to initiate this inno-vative idea. ■

Visit toIRANIn March last, our Vice-Chair-man, Ernesto Antolin, visit-ed Iran, in order to inaugu-rate the front window-open-ing mechanism line for thePeugeot 206, at the plant ofour licensed associate, Shahab-Shams.

In addition, during his visit tothe country, he had thechance to discover the evo-lutions of the growing auto-motive sector in Iran, first-hand. ■

Navarra opensits doorsAfter three years’ activity, on the request ofthe Navarre team and even of the customer,VW-Navarre, on 8 May last another step wastaken within our communication frameworkand Grupo Antolin-Navarra held the FirstOpen Day.

Although the weather was not exactly an allyand all the activities planned had to be car-ried out inside the building, it did not preventthe objectives set out by the organisers from be-ing satisfied. The three hundred people attend-ing the Open Day were not only able to see theinstallations and processes, but they also had agood time and took away happy memorieswith them, to judge by the comments at theend of the event.

After a presentation of the Group, two VW-Polos were exhibited, identifying the parts thatthe actual company mounts and those that aremanufactured by companies of the Group. The production lines were also viewed and theday-to-day work was explained, using visualaid and monitors at different parts of theprocess.

But the most amusing part was for the children. They enjoyed a magic show, a karaoke and asmall tombola with gifts, such as horns andsqueaky hammers, for them to make their re-union with the parents “more enjoyable”.

The photo exhibition with the company evolutionfrom its first steps, drew everyone’s attention agreat deal, especially those people who did notremember how they began in this project andwho then identified themselves as older.

After a lunch accompanied by the “rancheras”of the “Los Chihuahua” quartet, led by our col-league from production, Alfredo Anton, wecontinued with the exhibition of rural sport. Tojudge by people’s faces, the sports exhibitioncaused a sensation, above all among thosefrom Burgos, who did not believe their eyeswhen Miguel Saralgeui (famous stone lifterknown all over the world) lifted a 250-kilostone. Also, in the axe logcutting event, thepublic favoured one of them, who was fromNavarre, more than the person from Guipuz-coa, who did not have as many fans.

This was the climax of the party, which in spiteof the bad weather, sparkled, thanks to the or-ganisation and to the team of people who hadmade such a great effort in order for the oth-ers to take away a fond memory of this day. ■

Bring it on...

On 31 May two teams fromthe Group took part in the In-tercompany ChampionshipCup final at the Carlos SernaSports Centre. 48 companiesfrom our city had taken part inthe championship and theteams, Grupo Antolin “A”(from head offices) and GrupoAntolin-Eurotrim had previ-ously eliminated first-classteams such as Firestone, Ben-teler, L’Oreal, Gala, Fire Fight-ers, among others, whichgives us an idea of the impor-tance of the trophy.

But let’s focus on that fantas-tic final. Grupo Antolin “A”had already scored 3 goalswithin the first eleven minutesof the match, so all the fansthought they were going towin but…. they had not takeninto account the boys from

Eurotrim, who, in a fantasticsecond half, equalled thematch and were even winning4-3 ten minutes before theend of the match. Suddenly itwas a draw and the result hadto be decided by penalties.Grupo Antolin “A” missed thelast penalty kick handing thevictory to Eurotrim.

The most important thing?Winning, of course, and evenmore so considering the en-thusiasm of the two teams. But what is really importantis the fact that the two GrupoAntolin teams were the bestout of “48” companies of ourcity. The best thing? The col-leagues, both men andwomen, who filled the standsof the Stadium and neverstopped encouraging bothteams. And finally whichev-er team won, the winner wasour company. The Grupo An-tolin won. We all won. CON-GRATULATIONS TO THECHAMPIONS. ■

Adhesive Centralisation at

Grupo AntolinEurotrimIn March last, the work to centralise thestructural adhesives was completed atGrupo Antolin Eurotrim. This is usedin four out of the five production lines.

A similar application is in operation atour plant in the Czech Republic, GrupoAntolin Bohemia. At the Burgos plant, substantial improvements have been in-troduced, basically to control the tem-peratures of the gluing machine applica-tion elements

Centralising the structural adhesives hasproduced important advantages for ourprocess, which we can sum up as fol-lows:

· It guarantees a constant temperatureand viscosity in the structural adhe-sive application on each production line, according to each one’s needs.

· As there is only one adhesive handlingand pumping point, the cleanlinessof the plant has been improved, avoid-ing spillage at the different applicationand transport points.

· Considerable increase in space on theproduction lines.

The project is basically comprised of anadhesive pumping centre and a leaktightboiler to heat and distribute hot waterto the roller gluing machines. All of thisis located in just one point of the plant.(See enclosed figure).

We supply the necessary adhesive forwork on each production line from thePumping Centre. A collector system at-tached to the pumps enables us to workat the same time with two different adhe-sive suppliers.

A 42,000 kcal. Leaktight Boiler providesthe hot air flow volume necessary to helptransport the adhesive to the lines andto keep its application systems heated. On each line we can maintain a constanttemperature in the heat exchangers andthe adhesive application rollers thanksto a digital thermostat that controls afour-way solenoid valve. ■

Visit to the Oceanographicpark

At our Valencia factory, Grupo Antolin-Autotrimhad been thinking for some months that it would bea good idea for all the employees to be able to spenda day together other than a working day. So thecompany organised trips to get to know colleaguesfrom other departments with whom, due to thework they do, there are less dealings with.

The first initiative was in April last when we vis-ited the Oceanographic Park, one of the mostemblematic places of La Ciudad de Las Artesy las Ciencias (City of Arts and Science) of Va-lencia, as we imagined that the youngest oneswere going to have a great time.

The Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias is thelargest cultural leisure complex in Europe, com-bining interesting scientific data and informa-tion with amusement elements for all typesof public. It includes all the amenities necessaryto have a pleasant visit: shops, car parks, restareas, spaces for children and numerous cater-ing areas with different specialities for thewhole family.

L´Oceanogràfic is located in this environment. It is the largest marine centre in Europe, withseveral buildings distributed around the centrallake. Each one of these buildings houses a the-matic area from the marine world. The route iseasy, as, if we walk round the central lake wecan find all the different exhibitions and won-ders that this place holds: up to 45,000 speci-mens of 500 different species, simulations, 9submarine towers equipped with leading-edgetechnology, with 42,000 litres of water, …

Thus, all the employees, accompanied by theirfamilies spent a different Saturday surround-ed by fascinating specimens of aquatic fauna. They also enjoyed shows with intelligent dol-phins. In one of these shows, Lourdes, Ubaldo’sdaughter (a colleague from maintenance) waslucky to become a trainer of these fantasticcetaceans.

If you want further information you can visit thewebsite of the Ciutat de les Arts I les Cienciesof Valencia: www.cac.es

We thoroughly recommend this visit to all thosewho have not yet visited it. ■

TRIMTECis acknowledgedwith the “CostExcellencePerformanceAward”

The news broke out a few months ago. Thefact that it was expected took nothing away.Toyota, the major car manufacturer in Japan, surpassed the mythical FORD on a worldwidelevel, in the number of cars produced, becom-ing the second manufacturer in the world.

And now there is a new message: Toyota is in-creasing its capacity in Europe. The rise of thisJapanese manufacturer, with its firm growthpolicy, seems unstoppable.

The progression of this customer in MERCO-SUR is similar to its worldwide performance, taking small steps but always moving forward.

Four years ago, we set an objective to startworking for Japanese customers that operat-ed in Brazil, namely Toyota and Honda. For us,this was a question of prestige and recognitionof our quality improvement programme.

We started to work with them on new proj-ects and we achieved the orders for the doorand headliner panels, both for the new Toy-ota Corolla and for the new Honda FIT.

During the development of the products, es-pecially the door panels, we were able to re-

alise the difficulties entailed by working in amuch more rigorous manner than is normal ina Latin American country.

Important things, things that are really worth-while, are only achieved with a lot of effort, and this is how we reached an excellent qual-ity product. It was so good that we managedto better the same parts manufactured inEurope and even in Japan.

After surpassing the technical phase we cameup against the problem of profitability. Ten-sion phases with the Purchasing departments ofall the manufacturers in Brazil are very frequent, always reaching the breakage limit. This is acountry, which is tremendously vulnerable to anyexternal event due to its external debt, frequentdevaluations, constant rise in prices of raw ma-terial, decline of the vehicle sale market andthe manufacturers’ balance sheets in the red.

At the same time as our representatives were try-ing to keep the value of the sales prices, therest of Trimtec, hand in hand with the customer, were immersed in the search for the slightestpossibility of reducing costs.

The solutions found were presented to the cus-tomer and the savings shared.

The customer has recently acknowledged uswith the “COST EXCELLENCE PERFORMANCEAWARD”, which is especially important for usgiven the context we work in.

Today we can congratulate ourselves on hav-ing a very harmonious relationship with ourcustomer. ■

Millions of people suffer from eating dis-orders, generally accompanied by feelingsof blame, as well as the censure and crit-icism of the people around them.

The most widespread hypothesis aboutthe causes of obesity suggests that allthese people use less calories than thosethey obtain from the food they eat.

Neither obesity nor overweight are well-defined. What is normal? It is clear thatcultural and social factors have an influ-ence… imposed beauty norms generateserious alterations such as depression, anorexia and bulimia.

If obesity were only to receive the atten-tion it is worth, this would help avoidsocial rejections and other complexes.

Several hypotheses have been advancedto explain obesity:

- Increase in appetite due to a decrease ofthe feeling of satiety.

- Low production of serotonin, a neuro-transmitter of the brain that wouldcause a decrease in the capacity totransform foodstuff into heat and adecrease of the use of fat as a sourceof energy.

- Socioeconomic factors, the poorest peo-ple are thin, the richest are slim and itis in the middle class where the major-ity of obese people are found.

Nowadays, the overweight epidemic inboth the adult and child population has aconsiderable influence on morbidity andmortality in the developed world. Obe-sity predisposes to a greater risk of suffer-ing from diabetes, cardiopathy, vascularbrain accidents....

10% of children and 20% of adolescentsare obese with a rising tendency to turninto obese adults. Therefore, child obesityis the topic that concerns us today and thisis something we must control from ourown homes, as it is a serious social prob-

lem, which looks as if it is going to exceedthe mortality rates in the coming decades.

OBESE OROVERWEIGHT?

Any excess food we eat turns into fatand is stored, as the body is not ableto store proteins and carbohydrates.35% of the population of developedcountries are overweight, but beingobese is different to being overweight.

When the excess weight begins to in-terfere with vital functions, such as bre-athing, it is considered as morbid obesity.

The Body Mass Index (BMI) is used tomeasure the degree of obesity (result ofdividing your weight in kilograms by thesquare of your height in centimetres). We say that a person is obese whenhis/her BMI is over 30.

Obesity and

OverweightObesity is one of the major and most widespread threats for health. It is related to anincrease in probabilities of developing heart diseases, respiratory insufficiency, arthritis andpsychological alterations.

MOST COMMONCAUSES OF OBESITYDeveloping obesity throughout a person’slife has been related with many causes.Only at times is it possible to define one sin-gle predominating cause, which has start-ed up that alteration in energy balance.

- GENETIC: : There are some genes inthe chromosomes in charge of generat-ing the substance that is responsible forthe satiety centre, to cause the loss of ap-petite and stimulate the nervous system, charged with burning energy. Peoplewho inherit these genes are always hun-gry and consume less energy.

- ENDOCRINOLOGICAL: Alterations in theThyroid gland, Diabetes…among others

- PHYSICAL INACTIVITY: If I eat 5 and I useup 2... I accumulate 3.

- EXAGGERATED INGESTION: Food rich insaturated fats, eating between meals...

- USE OF DRUGS: Antidepressants, Corti-coids, Contraceptives...

- STOPPING SMOKING: Suppression ofnicotine

- CONFLICTIVE EMOTIONAL SITUATION:Reaction, increasing consumption

It is generally advanced that the cause is two-fold: “bad eating habits and little exercise"

TREATMENT OF OBESITY

Success in the treatment and control ofObesity and Overweight is going to de-pend on us establishing some realisticobjectives and changing our livinghabits. Without this, failure is guar-anteed.

- We must control the consumption of en-ergetic foods, decreasing fats, sugars, chocolates, buns….

- Follow some dietetic tips: Eat slowly, chew well, consider breakfast as themain meal, have 5 meals a day and leavesomething on the plate.

- Eliminate the consumption of alcohol.Reduce this to a glass of wine for lunchand dinner, it is digestive.

- Family education: Prevention means educat-ing children so that they eat healthy food, avoiding junk food and fast-food.

- Stimulate physical activity. Avoid sit-ting down all the time. Do exercise everyday. Walking is sufficient.

- Avoid "miracle diets ". Weight mustbe lost progressively, not in 15 days

- If there is a genetic predisposition or en-docrine illnesses, they must be treated.

Take care of your lifestyle and health.Losing weight does not mean suffer-ing, it means not falling ill. ■
