4 SupplyChain Review • June 2009

The NSW Committee continues to work consistently to support a number of projects that are about to happen and those that will finalise in December 2009. We are a small, but dedicated team.

SMART CONFERENCEOn the 10th & 11th of June, the SCLAA will be working with four other professional associations to support the SMART Conference.

Bill Henman is chairing one of the sessions and is looking forward to this event. There are a number of international speakers coming from America to present at the Conference and share their experiences in these tight economic times. Tim Costello is a keynote speaker and will share his experiences in the importance of Supply Chain around the world. The MC and Facilitator for the entire Conference is Steve Liebmann, who is one of Australia’s most respected journalists, involved in both television and radio broadcasting for more than four decades. When you attend the SMART Conference remember to visit the SCLAA stand in the main foyer area.

FORKLIFT COMPETITIONThe Forklift Competition is on again. Following on from the success of the recent Forklift Competition in Melbourne, the SCLAA are working to make the 2010 event much bigger and better. Contestants came from five different states to compete at the Materials Handling and Safety Show in Melbourne this year, and it proved to be a great event in the SCLAA

calendar. Sydney will be the venue for 2010.

CPL PROGRAMAt the recent Accreditation Council meeting in Sydney, in conjunction with the other associations, marketing programs were agreed upon to explain the benefits of the CPL Program within the Supply Chain and Logistics

industry. The Council is applying for government funding to further extend the reach of this program and ensure that it becomes the benchmark for all SCL staff in the future. The Certified Professional Logistician nominals are planned to have similar status to the Certified Practising Accountants (CPA). Jose Evora, represents the SCLAA on this committee.

WEBSITE UPDATE The Board of Directors are currently working through a process on how we can better communicate and collaborate with our Members around Australia. As electronic mediums are growing in importance and acceptance, the SCLAA website has been re-built recently and will allow many new communication mediums to be used.

LOGISTICS LOUNGES Queensland and Victorian Divisions of the SCLAA host Logistics Lounges where colleagues in the Supply Chain can meet, share a drink and nibble on food prior to hearing information about a topic that is current and relevant. The first one of these in NSW will be hosted after the SMART Conference in July. This will be in a different format to our breakfast meetings which have proved to be very popular.

TRANSPORT & LOGISTICS SKILLS COUNCIL MEETING The SCLAA is a member of a Transport and Logistics working group that is organised by the NSW Government and TAFE, to identify training skill needs and marketing for this industry sector. A group of 45 representatives of government and industry shared a variety of information to build on the current program. It is hoped that a similar initiative to the Queensland program will be achieved.

NSW CHARITY GOLF DAYWe are holding our charity golf day on the 18th of September, in partnership with the Australian Institute of Packaging. This will be an inaugural event for both branches of the AIP and SCLAA. The charity golf day will be held at Camden Lakeside Golf Course. Volkswagen and ACFS are the major sponsors with Cormack Packaging sponsoring the golf carts. Opportunities for

sponsorship still exist. All proceeds will be donated to the Starlight Foundation.

In conclusion, I look forward to seeing you at SMART or one of our other divisional events.

DISCRETIONARY TIME

There is no doubt that the marketplace is volatile and many companies are taking this opportunity to re-structure their operations, and certainly their Supply Chain processes. Our Members have reported significant changes to their operations

either as a result of downsizing, or their company’s are making strategic acquisitions to strengthen their long-term market position. While our Members should focus on the current issues it is also very important to think about where you want to be in the long-term. On-going education and training is vital to each of our futures, so I urge all Members to support the events that our association, and other allied bodies, are organising.

VISY LOGISTICSAt our first Executive Business Forum, Mathew Warrington, GM Visy Logistics, gave an insight into how this business, formed only two years ago, has grown to

become a major national 3PL provider. Visy Logistics has focused on three core elements, namely; financial, change management and technology/infrastructure to manage over 6,000 line-haul loads per month, over 10,000 metro deliveries throughout Australia and transports the equivalent of 125,000 TEUs import/export per annum. The event had a fantastic attendance and was very well received by all. We would especially like to thank those registrants who took the time to send through some very positive feedback. We hope you enjoyed the morning and have the opportunity to join us again next time.

CAREERS FOR WOMENDid you know that over 75% of the T&L workforce is male, yet is it is globally proven that organisations with gender diverse teams are 20% more effective in profitability, productivity and innovation? Mentoring for men and women

through a professional development program can create far more effective organisations. Our April Logistics Lounge presenters were Maureen Frank, the Managing Director of Emberin and Ivan Backman, Chairman, Australian Logistics Council (ALC). Together they outlined the ‘Women Moving Forward’ program which is a unique professional mentoring program designed to inspire women to fulfil their potential, not only professionally but also personally. It focuses on business skills such as networking, communicating, presentation, risk taking and negotiating. To learn more about the program please e-mail [email protected]

INNOVATION The Victorian Government, via DIIRD, has been a long-standing supporter of the Transport Distribution and Logistics Industry Round Table (TDL IRT www.supplychainvictoria.com.au). Recently the Victorian Government announced another new program called – ‘Market Validation Program (MVP)’. This program will soon announce a range of projects, many of which could be related to Supply Chain Technologies, seeking to financially support SME’s to develop innovative new products. If you are keen to know more go to www.business.vic.gov.au/mvp.

A MESSAGE FROM NICK

It was a wet and windy morning but there was a great turnout to the May event with the catchy title ‘The State of Freight’. We were fortunate to hear from both

public and private sector perspectives.

Mark Brownell talked about the new Freight and Logistics Council of Western Australia where he acts as Executive Officer. The new council has a multimodal focus which differs from the single mode focus of the past. The council wishes to develop a collaborative relationship with the private sector in progressing initiatives and resolving industry issues. The SCLAA wishes Mark and the Council the best of luck. Mark advised that if any Members have operational issues at Fremantle Port to contact the Port Operations Task Force; the Executive Officer is Vernon Durling. His details are: 9430 4755, 0411 236 404 or [email protected]. Vernon would be pleased to hear from any SCLAA Members in respect of operational issues at the Port. Brendan Moloney, General Manager of Sales and Marketing for Toll Global Forwarding gave an insightful and open overview of the shipping industry.

This industry has seen a dramatic change in fortunes over the last 18 months and many companies are fighting for survival. Despite this, Toll Global Forwarding continues to perform strongly and Paul Little has some aggressive growth targets for the coming years. Mike McGowan and Jim Kelly – thank you for organising a very interesting morning.

JOB VACANCIES No discipline is immune unfortunately from the redundancies we are seeing in the market, including the Supply Chain & Logistics area. If anyone has job vacancies in our field please consider advertising to our Members as a first step. Job adverts/profiles can be emailed out to the WA Member mailing list free of charge. Please email details through to [email protected]

WA COMMITTEE Angela McSeveney has decided to step down from her role on the SCLAA Committee to focus on her business, Payce Digital. We would like to thank Angela for her contribution to the membership and I am sure we will see her around at future events. If you are

interested in Payce’s digital marketing solutions, some of which really are leading edge, then please contact Angela: mobile:0405 620 434, [email protected], www.paycedigital.com.

WA T&L AWARDS
