ON THE COVERThis month’s cover photo features the new Z4. The classic roadster is back—more powerful and more stylish than ever before. It is the only car in its segment combining classic roadster proportions with a seating position moved close to the rear axle, rear-wheel drive, with a retractable hardtop. This two-piece lightweight aluminum shell opens and closes at the touch of a button within twenty seconds. This innovative roof system offers outstanding acoustic and aerodynamic qualities and sets a new standard in the Z4’s segment. Large windows and the high-quality roof lining give the hardtop a light look.

questions and stories. We are planning on over 200 E30s that day; be part of the fun! All E30s are invited, from garage queens to daily driv-ers (like mine!). Extra E30 parts cluttering the garage? Bring the parts and sell them. We are happy to be back at the historical Triple-X Drive-In in Issaquah, WA. The Triple-X has a great burger menu; bring your ap-petite and a few bucks and they will make you happy.

It’s tIme we get together for round five of when the rubber meets the rollers. This event is always good for flogging our Bimmers, getting a taste of reality, and just having a great time. I’m thinking of several new M3s in the Club that would be nice to see run as well as some modded E36 and E46 M3s. Anyone with a new 335 twin turbo want to check out that new software upgrade? Maybe a few more PRO3 race cars? Alex and the guys at the Carb Connection in Kirkland are hosting the Dyno Tech Session for our Club at a discounted rate. Saturday, June 13 we will pay only $75 (normally $145) to run our cars on their brand new 4WD dyno. Make up to three runs and get a printout ($10 dollars to burn a CD) of your car’s actual horsepower at the wheels as well as air/fuel ratio. The Club will be providing the BBQ and refreshments around noon. There is plenty of parking on the back side of the building by the dyno room, so whether you’re going to run your car or not, join fellow gear heads in having a great time. RSVP to Jeff Butler at [email protected].

From 10 a.m. to noon on saturday, June 20, join your fellow BMW Club members at a pre-Concours car care tech session at Griot’s Garage. This is always one of the more popular events of the year. For those planning to enter their BMW in the judged category at the Concours in July, our hosts will present special tips and tricks to help you score maximum points! Griot’s Garage recently completed construction on a new Car Care School and R&D garage. They also enlarged their retail store and now carry all of their car care products in-house. Every-thing is now located at their corporate headquarters in Fife, a half a mile west of BMW Northwest. Don’t miss this fun and informative tech session. Note: Products may be purchased from their retail store between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. and on this day only, those in attendance will receive 10% off any items purchased in their store. A great way to stock up for the year! This event is free to attend, but for planning purposes, RSVP by email to me at [email protected]. Guests are welcome.

“One Of AmericA’s grAndest, mOst spectAculAr drives.” So says National Geographic Traveler. Club members must agree. In the past, we’ve had over fifty cars participate in this tour over Highway 20. Arguably the best moun-tain scenery in Washington State, com-bined with smooth curvy roads make this one of my favorite tours. Regular readers of tour announcements will notice that I say this about every one we do. Our route will take us through the ‘Alps of America’ to the cowboy town of Winthrop, and on up to Sun Mountain Lodge for lunch. We have space for sixty people for lunch. If you wish to join us for lunch, YOU MUST RSVP TO ME BY SATURDAY, JUNE 20! The first sixty people to RSVP will dine perched on a mountain top overlooking the Methow Valley. If you don’t make the first cut, no worries. There are plenty of

North Cascades Tour June 28

fun places for lunch in Winthrop, and we’ll make arrangements for you to meet back up with the group for the drive back. For the trip back, choose between back-tracking along Highway 20, or continuing on through the beautiful Methow Valley toward Chelan, and back over Stevens or Snoqualmie Passes. We will meet on the west side of Northgate Mall in front of Nordstrom, at 7 a.m. After coffee, donuts, and a short driver’s meeting, we’ll depart at 7:30. Bring cameras, FRS radios, binoculars, sunscreen for those lucky convertible drivers, and lots of water! One must be a Club Member in good standing to attend tours, but newbies are allowed one run prior to joining. Please review the Club Tour Governance Policy at www.bmwpugetsound.com in the Tours section. Please send RSVPs and any questions to Scott Hieronymus at [email protected].

July 26

JoIn us For the 29th Annual Concours d’Elegance and Heritage Picnic at Cedar River Park in Renton. This year we are pleased to be included as part of the 24th Annual Renton River Days community celebration coordinated by the City of Renton. Our big show will be part of the many activities for the public to enjoy. Nearby will be music, arts and crafts booths, food vendors, an art exhibit, and other activities for the whole family. Mark your calendar for Sunday, July 26. This is a special day for Club mem-bers to come together and enjoy each other’s company as well as display their BMWs at their very best. There will be two classes you can choose from for your BMW-a Judged class, with our famous etched glass trophies awarded to the winners, and a non-competitive Display class, where you can show your BMW without being judged. Come see the history and beauty that make up BMW’s heritage. This event is always very popular with 300-400 people in attendance. We anticipate close to 200 BMWs on display, spanning seven decades. Be sure to be part of this exciting day. We will also be inviting the

Concours d’Elegance and BMW Heritage Picnic

local BMW Motorcycle club to display their BMW motorcycles with us.

Judged ClassNot sure if you are up for having your BMW judged? We judge only on cleanli-ness, and not on originality. The judging forms can be reviewed on the Club’s web site. You must be a member of the BMW CCA, BMW ACA or Canadian BMW CCBC to participate in the judged classes. Cars are judged in three major areas: Exterior, Interior (including trunk) and Engine Bay. The underside of the car is not judged. Each class is judged by a three-member team whose independent results are then totaled to determine a score. This process is designed to be as fair and objective as possible. For class competition there are bonus points for mileage, which evens out the competition for high versus low mileage cars. Best in Show is determined by taking the top BMW from each class, and lining them up for a final review by a three-judge team. Previous scores are not considered as the judges choose the cleanest, most dazzling BMW on the lawn.

DISPLAy CLASSThe Display Class is a terrific way to take part in the event for those who don’t wish to compete but want to come and show off their car. Just wash it, clean the wheels and you’ll be good to go! You’ll be parked with the judged cars in your class. All participants will receive a Griot’s Garage sample kit, commemorative 11x17 poster, cool refrigerator magnet and chance to win raffle prizes during the day.

Thanks to our Sponsors! Our event this year is once again being sponsored by a generous donation from BMW Seattle. Next time you are at the dealership, be sure and thank them. BMW Seattle is providing the beauti-ful glass trophies as well as a junior and adult BMW cruise bikes for our raffle valued at over $1,400 (pictured in this article)! Griot’s Garage will also be in attendance as the official Car Care Sponsor of our event. Griot’s Garage will be providing gifts for participants, raffle prizes, and will have representa-tives on hand demonstrating how to use their products. Griot’s Garage will

Meet the BoardWeb Site Coordinator Ken HillI’ve been a member of the BMW Club since the mid 90s, and I’m your Website Coordinator. My time here with the Club has included working with the Track Committee, as a Driving Instructor, helping with the Concours and the occasional off-road tour. Most of my efforts over the last couple of years have been helping with the PRO3 effort, and helping with coaching and technical advice for individuals to get them started in racing. Now helping with the website, I eagerly look forward to suggestions to help make the site better, so please, contact me directly if you have any ideas or improvements.

Zündfolge Advertising Jim Millet Since purchasing his first Bimmer in 1994 Jim has been a bonafide Bimwad. At his first BMW Driving School he made the mistake of driving a fellow student’s E36 M3 and three days later a 1995 M3 was sitting in his garage. In 2007 Jim traded his 2000 E36/8 Z3 MCoupe for his current ride; an E86 Z4 MCoupe. After several years of driving school experience Jim attended the Club Instructor Clinic and has been actively instructing since 2001. Jim volunteered for the appointed Board position of Zündfolge Advertising Coordinator and has served in that capacity for the past six years. Jim and his wife of forty-eight years have resided in Seattle since 1972 and have five children and nine grandchildren.

Zündfolge Editor Lucetta LightfootMy first Club event was a track day at SIR (now called PR) driving a Porsche. After driving my first BMW from the dealer lot in 1977 (a new 320i, with less the ten miles on the odometer), I have been a BMW owner since. I joined both BMW ACA Puget Sound Region and the national club BMW CCA in 1977. (Now the Puget Sound Region is part of CCA.) My first volunteer position with the Club was helping with the Zündfolge in 1977. My first board position was Treasurer the following year. I have been helping on the board my entire time in the Club. I have held many positions on the board, including President. I was one of the first five senior instructors the Club appointed. I lead the By-Laws Committee to write the Club’s current by-laws. I have been working in the Zündfolge Editor position for over twenty years. I currently own two BMWs; an M5 and an MCoupe. As a very involved BMW Club member I have been blessed with many wonderful BMW friends over the years and I look forward to new blessings.

MOTOR SPORTSHow to Get Startedclub members oFten ask me how to get started in our track events. We try to make it easy so more members will take advantage of this opportunity. So here’s how to do it.• First, you need to be a member of BMW

Car Club of America. If you’re read-ing Zündfolge, presumably you are.

• Second, if you have never partici-pated in any of these events, you need to go through a Car Control Clinic (CCC) before a High Performance Driving School (HPDS).

• Third, sign up for an upcoming CCC on www.MotorsportsReg.com. You will need to set up an account there.

• Fourth, get a tech inspection done on your vehicle. There is a form on the Club website. Over on the left side of the home page click on Driv-ing Schools and then click on High Performance Driving Schools. Any number of Zündfolge advertisers will do the inspection for a nominal cost.

• Finally, show up the day of the event by about 7:30 a.m.

Once you’ve been through a CCC, the next step is to sign up for a HPDS. With the CCCs you can drive a con-vertible and you won’t need a helmet. For the HPDS you will need a helmet (although we do have loaners) and con-vertibles are not permitted. Usually, keeping at this hobby is easy, but the insurance issue has been a bit of a problem. Most individual auto policies now exclude track events. Check your policy for exclusions. Most have some language excluding claims from damage at high performance driving schools or events held on a racing surface or at a racetrack facility. Luckily, we now have an alternative. Lockton Risk Services is offering a High Performance Driving Event policy on a single-event basis. This allows you to sign up for coverage for the day of the event and not put your normal policy at risk. I mentioned this in my column last month, but now it’s even better because BMW CCA has arranged a nine percent discount for BMW CCA members at BMW CCA events. That’s

us! For information on this policy, visit http://HPDEIns.locktonaffinity.com or call them at 866-582-4957. You can also sign up for the coverage by going to www.MotorsportsReg.com, the site that handles all our track event registration. There is a button to add insurance for the event you are registering for. The policy has been marketed as if it is an “agreed value” policy, which it isn’t. The insured (that’s you) state the value you think your car is worth. But Lock-ton won’t pay whatever you say; they’ll pay what the market value is. So, they are going to start marketing the policy as “stated value.” One of our chapter members was instrumental in working with Lockton on this and the company is going to change their marketing. In any case, this is a great alternative to cover your car if your regular policy won’t cover track events.

on a surprIsIngly warm April weekend, a crowd of instructors and advanced drivers from the BMW Club and the local Porsche Club attended the inaugural High Performance Driv-ing School at Oregon Raceway Park, a new racetrack in Grass Valley, Oregon. Sponsored by the Porsche Club, Oregon Region, the purpose of this school was to familiarize the region’s instructors with this exciting new track, so we can begin teaching it to our students later this year. Situated off U.S. Highway 97 in Grass Valley, Oregon, a town about half an hour south of the Columbia River, Oregon Raceway Park was carved out of a former wheat farm by a group of motorsports enthusiasts and investors. With sixteen turns in the initial develop-ment of the track (and possibly more later, if future plans come to fruition), blind hills, elevation changes, and not a single flat section of pavement, there are challenges aplenty.

The drivers were divided into three groups, with one group working flag stations for a couple of hours at a time while the other two groups alternated between driving and hot-pit debrief-ing sessions. Drivers from Washington, Oregon, Idaho, British Columbia, and Alberta were in attendance, along with a variety of hardware: about half Porsches, a quarter BMWs, and the rest a mixture of Corvettes, Lotuses, a race-prepped Miata, and even a DeTomaso Pantera. Roughing ItDrivers who are used to the amenities and nearby services of Pacific Raceways or Portland International Raceway may be shocked at how much they have to rough it at Oregon Raceway Park. It is a new track in a small town that does not have a motorsports history, and it shows. For example, there is no premium gas at Grass Valley’s only local filling station, and the owner currently has no plans to start supplying it. This means

that you need to drive twenty-seven miles north to Biggs to fill up. If you should find yourself in need of a tow or a tire replacement, you may be waiting a long time for someone to show up, and you may be on the hook for a very expensive delivery bill. The road that leads from U.S. High-way 97 to the track entrance is currently not paved, so you will either have to drive your car on gravel for a couple of miles, or buy a truck and trailer. (Nego-tiations are currently underway with the county to rectify this.) There is only one small motel and a hunting lodge in the area. Most people who attended the school either brought RVs or, again, drove up to Biggs to sleep. Surprisingly, only a few people stayed at the hunting lodge, called Wild Winds Ranch, even though it is conve-niently located just north of the track. Again, it is only accessible by dirt road; however, the 18 beds are warm and comfortable, the rooms are private

(although the bathrooms are shared), and the owners are committed to serving the motorsports community, as driving season does not coincide with hunting season. The final challenge was food. The key seemed to be planning ahead. There actually did turn out to be limited catering at the track, but this was a last-minute addition and only covered lunch. Scott and Nancy Adare spent the weekend providing mechanical and culinary support to the Spokane crowd out of Scott’s shiny new tractor-trailer; no word on whether they will do this in the future, but for $20 a day, drivers on the Nan Plan appeared to be well-fed. Most of the others either brought their own food (the RV crowd) or went foraging in town or up at Biggs. Finally, the drivers who stayed at the hunting lodge got three full, hot meals per day included in the cost of lodging. Steak dinner and key lime pie, anyone?

Bowls and Half-PipesWhy should skateboarders have all the fun? If you look at the official track map on the Oregon Raceway Park website, you will see that most of the straights and turns have names, rather than numbers. Among these are the “Pucker Factor,” the “North Bowl,” the “Big Dipper,” and the “Half Pipe.” This should give you a clue that this is not your average track. In fact, it is more like a skate park for cars. Many tracks, including our own Pacific Raceways, brag about their elevation changes. But usually, this means only that the track runs uphill or downhill in sections, while the actual road surface is flat. Not so at Oregon Raceway Park. Nearly every turn has some kind of banking or camber— often working against you. The Pucker Factor gets its name from your facial muscles’ reaction as you encounter its extreme off-camber attitude. As you zoom downhill past the Continued on Page 14

when I was a kId, I had a huge collection of Matchbox cars. Many of these were fantasy cars, either the figments of some toy designer’s imagination, or ultra-rare exotics that you might see in a magazine but never in real life. One that I remember in particular was a DeTomaso Pantera. Made in Italy, with Ford mechanicals, the real-life Pantera was only sold in the U.S. for a few years in the early 1970s, although production continued in Europe until 1991. Unlike better-known exotics of that era, like the Lotus Esprit or the Lamborghini Countach, the Pantera never got much notice from either magazines or Hollywood, so imag-ine my thrill when I pulled into the pits at Oregon Raceway Park and came face-to-face with a bright orange Pantera!

barn (did I mention the property used to be a farm?), pick your braking point as you prepare to turn right into turn 4. Too early and you will understeer into the dirt off the far edge of the track; too late and you will feel like you’re about to fall out your window as the car goes off-camber. At the end of my first day, my left leg was actually sore from digging into the seat bolsters dur-ing this turn! The North Bowl (turn 8) also presents a challenge, as you crest a hill while simultaneously entering a 179-degree right turn. Having spent Saturday morn-ing manning the safety station at the entrance to this corner, I can tell you that every possible line was tried at least once, and there is sure to be debate for months to come. This will, in my opinion, prove to be the most technical section of the track over the long term. Immediately after the North Bowl, however, you get to ride the Half Pipe,

This particular Pantera is in remarkable condition for its odometer reading; obviously it is not just a show car. The Ford engine lets out a mighty roar when you step on the gas, and the exceptionally wide rear tires (especially for a car of that era) put the power to the pavement with authority: I saw the Pantera pulling away even from modern Porsches and Corvettes on the straight, uphill sections of the track. Unfortunately, the 1970s suspension technology, especially with the skinny front tires, proved to be a severe handicap in the more exciting corners, and the brakes... well, let’s just say they were working hard. Nevertheless, many little boys fantasize about seeing a favorite toy come to life. In some cases, they just have to wait a couple of decades.

how many tImes have you heard a story like this? You’re at a car show or concours d’elegance. There is an exquisitely restored classic glistening in the sun, maybe with a trophy on the dashboard. You approach the owner and ask her how she came to possess such a beautiful machine, expecting to hear that her grandfather bought the car new or that she purchased it from another collector. Instead she says, “I found it sitting in a field out in the middle of nowhere!” Maybe it belonged to someone’s late father or husband, or perhaps a son who went off to war and never came back. Maybe it just came with the property, forgotten by the previous landowner. I saw such a car last month, sitting in a field just beyond the fence north

of Turn 8 at Oregon Raceway Park: a red Triumph Spitfire 1500, last registered in 1995. It appears to be in fairly good condition for having sat outside for over a decade. Not much rust that I could see, and the interior appears intact. It reminded me of the MGs that my friend Anthony would buy and restore when we were in high school. (Since I had my drivers license and he did not, I got to take the cars out for their shakedown runs after he was finished putting them back together.) The field turned out to be part of the hunting lodge mentioned in the main article; however, the car belongs to the previous owner of that property. If anyone is interested in buying and restoring a 1970s British roadster, call Jeff or Jennifer DuPont at 541-333-0833.

I Found It in a Fieldwith the most extreme banking on the entire track. The closest comparison I can draw is to a roller coaster. Do you take it slow-in, fast-out? Or do you trust the banking to hold you while you dive in, banzai-style? One corner that you must enter very slowly, however, is turn 13: the entrance to the Big Dipper. This is actually the only second-gear corner on the track, in my opinion. It is an off-camber left-hander, and somewhat more than 90 degrees. However, take the time to make a classic slow entry with a late apex, and you will be rewarded with a straight downhill shot that lets you stand on the gas with impunity. Yet, many other corners are surpris-ingly fast. Run in the clockwise direc-tion, the track has several increasing-radius turns that allow you to turn in earlier and accelerate more aggressively than you might suspect. Turn 1 at the end of the front straight, turn 5 leading from the Pucker Factor to the Valkyrie Hill, and turn 14 at the start of your uphill run to the Continental Corner and front straight, can all be taken with maximum power. Future SchoolsDrooling yet? The Porsche Club, Oregon Region, will be sponsoring their next school at Oregon Raceway Park the weekend of June 20–21. August 2009 (date to be announced)BMW Seattle 1002 Airport Way South

bmw seattle will be hosting an exclusive event for the BMW Club. Slated to open in August of this year, BMW Seattle’s new state of the art facility will be complete and open for business. As growth in Seattle’s downtown has driven up the cost of real estate, Seattle-ites have seen their options for purchasing and servicing their vehicles dwindle. BMW Seattle is breaking the trend. Making a significant investment in an important downtown neighborhood. “We have experienced tremendous growth in recent years at our BMW Seattle store,” said Sid DeBoer, Chair-man of Lithia. “Our customer base has grown so large, that we have simply outgrown our current location. It is with great pride that we are building this new state of the art facility to better

serve our customers. Through market research and analysis, we think we have found the perfect location to provide expanded options to people who live in the city or who work downtown.” The new facility is being constructed at 1002 Airport Way South. The site formerly housed warehouse space. With the increased size, BMW Seattle will be hiring additional technicians, service advisors, and customer service representatives. The larger facility will result in a wider selection of vehicles, and will provide customers with greater flexibility in scheduling their vehicle service and maintenance. The size of the new store and its location represent a significant commitment to Seattle and to the downtown community. The building will be over 300,000 square feet in size and have more than forty service bays. Completion of the building is slated for 2009. Please RSVP to Jeff Butler at [email protected]

In 2006 John Zuberek’s parents moved from California to Seattle. He agreed to come along, if they allowed him to get an M3. Now before you pass judgment on John for being a spoiled Cali kid, just listen to his story. John, while looking for an E36 M3, came across an E30 M3 and fell head-over-heels in love. His little E30 is Brilliantrot red and a total scorcher that he named Eve. His car is no concours winner or show car. He’s actually slowly making it into a hardened track car. His M3 sits on 16-inch BBS bronze basketweave wheels. It has Euro Hella smoked smilies, smoked turn signals, smoked fogs, Magnaflow exhaust, a Nardi Deep Corn steering wheel, Sparco strut bar and H&R race springs with

The Cali Kid and Eve

Bilstein sport shocks. The fuel and air are processed compliments of Dinan. When John took Eve out for the first ride with the new wheels and suspen-sion, everything went great, except that his girlfriend got a little car-sick from the stiff suspension. John thought through all the modifications, and points out that they are all reversible, so he has no regrets so far. What if John could have any car? Well, that’s always a tough question, but on his short list are the Euro-spec E30 M3 Evo-3, BMW 2002 Turbo, one of RAUH-Welt’s custom-made

Porsches and the original Porsche 911 Carerra 2.7 RS. The M3 is not only John’s first BMW, it’s John’s first car. Now that’s a kid with his head on straight, if you ask me. If the girlfriend takes her Dramamine before The Cali Kid and Eve start carving up the pavement, they should have a long and loving relationship.

Write to me and tell me about your BMW, just remember to answer the following questions.• Tell us about your car?• When you bought it?• Why you bought it?• Modifications you’ve made?• Whether or not you like the mods

you’ve made (We could all use each others experience and wisdom).

• Maybe an interesting story involving your car?

• What was your first car?• What was your first BMW?• What car would you buy if there were

JeFF butler and Zac underwood, BMW Club members and owners of Haury’s Collision, and Rich Milham, BMW CCA PSR Risk Management Advisor, conducted a top notch clinic on automobile collision repair and insurance claims. Jeff and Rich’s outstanding presentation highlighted the many challenges confronting consumers today when having their vehicle repaired after a collision, mediating issues arising between the consumer and the insurance company (how to solve an underpayment of a claim) and injury claims. Very informative handouts were provided as well as accident kits and gift cards to Lombardi’s Italian Restaurant. The door prize drawing for the M3 went to Club member Tony Fackelmann. Tony will have the opportunity to spend a weekend enjoying “the ultimate loaner car,” our 2008 BMW M3 complements of Haury’s.

Some of the Topics Covered During the Shop Tour:• Celette dedicated fixture structural repair equipment. The

Celette Sevenne System uses rigid fixtures developed from vehicle manufacturer blueprints and is required by BMW, Audi, Porsche, Volkswagen, Volvo, Jaguar, and Mercedes Benz for structural repairs. This system realigns the vehicle on the repair bench and only applies realignment forces to the damaged area. When replacing structural parts the fixture ensures exact placement of the new components. www.celette-na.com

• True Point Sonic electronic measuring system. We discussed the difference between universal measuring/realignment systems and Celette.

• Color matching using Glasurit’s color match system

Haury’s Collision Repair/Consumer Rights Tech Session RecapSome Highlights Covered During the Consumer Rights Seminar:• Why and how you should choose a BMW approved repair

shop and protecting your warranty.• Specific steps on how to successfully manage an insurance

claim.• Why you should never have oral conversations with an

insurance claims adjuster. Get everything in writing to protect yourself.

• Tips on purchasing insurance policies with a written guide on policy language to avoid.

• Insurance companies recommended due to their more favorable policy language and better claims handling practices.

• When another person hits your car, their insurance carrier is not governed under insurance law, it’s tort law. You have no rights against their carrier.

• Drivers school damage to your car? Covered or not depends on your policy language.

• Diminished Value, what is it and when are you owed.

Although not covered dur-ing the tech session, Haury’s is one of two repair facilities in Seattle approved by BMW to perform structural repairs on BMWs possessing aluminum components, like the E60 5 and 6 series and new X5. Thanks again to Club members Jeff Butler, Zac Underwood and Rich Milham for being such generous hosts and dedicated Club supporters. It Is Just barely Into the month oF may and we have two of the twelve championship points races for ICSCC in the books! It has been a long and protracted off-season for many of the PRO3 drivers and car owners, but no more! Race #1 at Portland International Raceways saw thirteen PRO3 cars in attendance; unfortunately, only eleven took the green flag due to mechanical issues for Dan Gavrila and Hank Moore. Of those eleven cars, Mark Estes of Portland, OR was the one PRO3 Novice upgrade for the weekend and we made sure to welcome him into the fray. Speaking of Novices, of 22 total entries in the Novice Closed Wheel race, seventeen cars finished and of those seventeen, three cars were future PRO3 racers: Bart House (#304), Mark Estes (#416), and Dave Wahl (#338). All the Novices showed their mettle for racing and did a great job. Watch for additional names you may recognize from the BMW CCA show up in the Novice race group as the season unfolds.

The first race of the season can generally bring some jitters as the racers in all classes get the cobwebs worked out of car and driver. Portland was no exception to this as the PRO3 group worked to sort out the new spec tire, the Toyo Proxes R888. This is a new compound for the group and no one was able to come to a clear consensus regarding car and tire set-up. Some driv-ers preferred the higher pressures, while others preferred the lower pressures. More negative camber; less negative camber. Soft springs? Stiffer springs? Keep an eye on the drivers and crew in the PRO3 pits this season and you will notice a lot of head scratching as we work to figure out this very important piece of equipment (advance warning: along with head scratching may come the proverbial throwing of the wrench or swear words!) Finishing out the top five for PRO3 in race #1 were: C.Gabriel, P1; M.Olsen, P2; M.Shulman, P3; B.Mearns, P4; and R.Emerson, P5. Based on his quality performance, I guarantee that you will see Caelin Gabriel’s name at the top of

The PRO3 LineForget F1; the racing action is in PRO3! the order this season! Nice work Caelin

for taking ‘Pole’ and the win! A special shout-out to Bob Mearns (PRO3/EIP #161) who started on Pole in EIP (Group 5) took the green flag and never looked back. Bob ran away with not just the win in EIP, but also the overall win for Group 5. Way to go Bob! And on that note, EIP was comprised solely of PRO3 cars. (I think that is a first.) So after the long winter break, and the ridiculously-short 1.6 hours of Pacific Raceways Snow-duro, we were faced with back-to-back race weekends, plus a special ProFormance Racing School track day for PRO3. April 29 was one of two specific days this year set aside by Don Kitsch, Jr. for a special PRO3-only run group during a ProFormance Track day event. You will recall that ProFor-mance Racing Schools is a contingency sponsor of the PRO3 series and has identified PRO3 as the official racing development program for ProFormance students looking to take their track days to the next level. For a deeply dis-counted price, about seventeen PRO3

cars and drivers had six thirty-minute sessions to test the new tires and play with suspension set-ups. I can say from my own experience that this session paid big dividends with how much data I was able to produce and different settings I was able to try. Even Curtis Creager, the official photographer of PRO3, had a chance behind the wheel of the Reaper. The testing day was an ideal precur-sor to the weekend race. Crazy weather met the racers on Saturday practice with a steady rain falling. Many cars were then altered to a more ‘wet-friendly’ set-up for the afternoon’s qualifying session. Unfortunately (for me, anyways!) the weather changed and the line dried out about twenty minutes before the start of our session. Back to a dry setting and an attempt at some fast laps! Saturday’s Novice race made it to completion just prior to the skies dark-ening and a huge rain shower letting loose on the paddock. Congratulations to two more upgrades from Novice into PRO3: Bart House (#304); and Dave Wahl (#338). The ranks keep expanding! Sunday was sure to be wet in the morning, so we all traipsed out to the track with confidence that our Saturday times were solid. Not so! The clouds parted and the sun shone brightly with

nary a drop of precipitation predicted all day. All bets were off as racers did their best to better the previous-day qualifying times. With twenty PRO3 cars set for the split start, it was sure to be a great race, and PRO3 delivered. Lots of tight racing was had throughout the grid with plenty of position swapping during the abbreviated session. An incident at T9 on the second lap caused a full course yellow and brought out the pace car for several laps. Racing resumed with a bunched-up grid and the close racing became all the more so. Finishing without incident, the top Five were: C. Gabriel, P1; S.Hieronymus, P2; F.Wright, P3; D.Gavrila, P4; and M.Olsen, P5. Congrats again to Caelin on a well done top podium, including the pole! Nice job as well to Scott with his podium finish—a first for him—and

made all the better as he was joined by good friend and fellow Enduro team-mate, Fred in P3. With the first Seattle race in the books, this also starts the race for the West Werks Challenge award whereby series sponsor, West Werks Automotive in Redmond, WA will pay cash to the top three points earners of the three Seattle events (May, August and Sep-tember.) Keep watching this space for the running points tally! Sunday, the PRO3 drivers were given a special treat and had the opportunity to show off their cars and even sign an autograph or two. We were visited by Cub Scout Pack #492 of Renton, WA who were each given a 2009 PRO3 Calendar and met the drivers and got an up-close look into a PRO3 car. The Den mothers were treated to a ride in the PRO3 pace car driven by BMW CCA member Steve Adams, and word has it that at least one of them is now looking to become more involved in local club racing. About the time this issue arrives in the mailbox, we will only be a few days away from the third Championship Points Race in Portland. This next event proves to be a big one with at least seven guest drivers from around the country, including James Clay, owner of Bimmerworld and Speed World Challenge competitor. Make the short trip down south to Portland to be a part of this historic event! I’ll see you at the finish line.
