The reality is that I missed the action, drama and camaraderie of a Four Winds meeting. I was required by a profes- sional commitment to be out of town for the April meeting but for the May meeting I had time off from work and I did what any re- spectable BMW motorcyclist would do. I left town for the open road on an extended four- day weekend to ride my F650, really an 800 confused moniker BMW. I know the club would expect no less of their wayward presi- dent. This club would not tolerate a poser for a president. As a result of my absence I have asked the board to postpone the board meeting un- til I returned. At he next board meeting we will revisit the quorum requirement since some members have asked us to reconsider the issue. I have also heard from members concerning the club’s support of charitable organizations. The board will also discuss this issue. Suggestions from members are that the club takes an organized approach to decid- ing which charity or charities that will be supported by the club and how the charities will be supported. A good start would be the Ride for Kids on the eighth of August. I will be riding and I would invite any member who would like to join me to meet at Kings Res- taurant in Cranberry at 8:30am for breakfast. The Ride for Kids recently donated five mil- lion dollars to Duke University for pediatric brain tumor research. Motorcyclists raised this money by similar rides across the coun- try. We can discuss the details at the June meeting. As everyone is aware the June meeting will be at the Laurel Highlands BMW Rally on June 19. I hope that as many members as possible will attend the meeting and spend the weekend. I hope we can discuss the sug- gestions that the board will have as a result PLEASE NOTE: THE JUNE MEETING TIME WILL BE 2:00PM AT THE LAUREL HIGH- LANDS CAMPOUT, INSTEAD OF 12 NOON!

WELCOME NEW CLUB MEMBERSBy Joann Barr, Corresponding Secretary

We welcome 4 new members to our club.

Jerry Hirschfeld is a Pittsburgh firefighter and was introducedto the club by Walt Halaja. He has been riding for 10 years andhas taken the motorcycle safety course. He gets rides in when hecan on his R1150R.

Calvin Wilson heard about us at the European Motorcycles ofPgh. when he ran into Walt. He has been riding for 45 years andowns a 2006 R1200RT.

Marge and John Humphrey found 4winds on the web.(Where was Walt?). They also have been on motorcycles for along time (45 years). Their BMW now is a R1150RT.

These new members like most of us said they joined the club tomeet other riders and ride. None of them have been to our rallybut we hope that changes and they join us this August.

THE GEAR RINGSent in by Don Poremski

Who thought this to be a kind of neat invention.

CALL SERVICE EARLYI recall seeing a cartoon in Guns and Ammo magazine years ago inwhich a hunter brought a gunsmith his shotgun for repair with thestock broken off just behind the trigger guard. On the wall was acalendar indicating that the date was the day before small game sea-son, and the caption had the hunter saying to the gunsmith, “But Ineed it tomorrow! If I’d have needed it 2 weeks ago, I’d have broughtit in then!” Shop work takes time, and although BMW shops likeour fine European Motorcycles of Pittsburgh will indeed pitch in and‘have it fixed by tomorrow’ if you’re a rider on the road on the waythrough and something goes wrong. But for all us ‘locals’ with Bikesthat may need an N-thousand mile service, or some other service weknow is coming up, it’s a real help all the way around, to us and tothe shop to call the folks in Service to arrange an appointment wellin advance of the date you think you’ll need it. Things get crazyaround there (meaning they get booked solid this time of year andduring the summer, so make it easy on yourself and them, and callfor your appointment well ahead of when you’ll need it.

FIREFIGHTER MEMORIAL RIDEAs those of you who were at the club meeting at Rochester Inn know, a Boy Scout of Beaver County has taken it as his Eagle Scout projectto have a memorial to the county’s fallen firefighters set up. To help fund the memorial, a ride was set up for Sunday the 16th of May--theday aftr our club meeting. The cost was $20 per rider and $10 per passenger. Leaving from the Center Twp. Municipal Center, a 90 mileride was planned to end at a park where all riders would enjoy a nice repast. After Lady Di had e-mailed a number of us about this ride, several folks then e-mailed back and forth about going, disccussed it at the club meeting and 4 of our riders, new member, Capt. JerryHirshfeld, Old member, Capt. Walt Halaja (both firefighters), Director Jack Bramkamp, and Paul “PW” White participated. Here are somepictures taken from the ride. Note the happy enjoyment of the comestibles at the end of the ride. It was a beautiful day for it.

POST MTG. RIDE

-NORTH-by Diane Pears

We had a good turnout at the Rochester Inn's outdoor patio Saturday. Finally the weather cooperated for our first chance to reap the ben-efits of the new earlier meeting start time with a chance to actuallyRIDE together! After watching a short MSF video on "Group Rides",people announced intentions to head in 3 or 4 different general di-rections.

Ed Syphan handed out copies of route directions for our north-ward bound group. We enjoyed the sunshine, scents of spring, andsome great roads we had never been on. The route was altered toaccommodate Reddy K's hankering for his favorite ice cream atYoung’s Ice Cream and Custard Stand on Rte 68 just outsideZelienople. Jack Bramkamp, John & Marge Humphrey, and theLatkovics split off (after Ron got his fix), leaving Ed, John Rollin, and Tim and Diane Pears to end up north of Beaver Falls on Rt. 18by the turnpike exchange exploring the Buttermilk Falls Nature Areanear the tiny, historic town of Homewood, PA. This is a 35 footurban waterfall with a railroad above the falls. You can see evidenceof the holes they drilled to remove blocks of what was named"Homewood Sandstone" from the gorge below that used to be a quarry.

Both the waterfalls and town are one of those little gems hidingbehind the main road a person can travel by a thousand times andnever know they're there. If you're looking for a ride destination upthat way sometime, like many small communities, they host a Heri-tage Days Festival the first weekend of October:

WEST BREAKFAST/RIDE

MAY 8, 2010by Walt Halaja

Three members, Ralph Meyer, Paul White and I, Walt Halaja, at-tended Bob Evans. Just enough with plenty of elbow room around asix chair table. Where were you? Ha! that’s OK, I understand. Iknow it was a bit chilly and windy, but the rain was East of the‘Burgh and that’s all I needed to know.

Paul filled us in on his health: he had a short hospital stay alongwith a few days in Manor care for wound care. He needs a couple ofweeks to get back in the saddle again and we were glad to see that hewas up and about to have breakfast even if he had to bring the cage.

So that just left Ralph and me to ride and ride we did. I hadthought the night before of a possible route to take back roads to-wards Bakerstown if it was just going to be Ralph and me, and Ralphagreed. I wanted Ralph to see the Historical marker from the “GreatRepublic”—The last 1727 ton steam boat that was launched fromthe “Shousetown Boatyard” on Rt. 51 in Glenwillard, Pa. InstantlyI knew Ralph liked it because his eyes opened wide when he walkedup to the Marker. I think it is very worth while to check it out oneday if you have never been there before. (Editor: I’ve always main-tained that Walt’s the club historian, and I think I’m right—here’sjust one more of many examples. He KNOWS these places that areneat as all get-out!)

Next we stopped at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Ambridge —once part of “Old Economy” to view the Linde or “Luther Lindetree” that was planted on April 17, 1917 by the Harmony society forthe 400th year anniversary of Martin Luther’s reformation. I toldRalph that in Mathilde’s home town there are also many of thesetrees planted and that they live to be hundreds of years old.

We then followed the “Red Belt” to Bakerstown being protectedfrom the wind mostly by the trees and just by being on a 2 lane road.We parted as usual on the Red belt and Heckert rd. just several hun-dred yards from my Son Wayne’s home with a good hand shake. Ihad a good visit with Wayne and made my way home still using backroads till the Neville Island bridge where I hit a wall of wind push-ing Traveler and me all over my lane.

I have a thing with my mileage (you all know how I feel aboutkeeping a mileage log) and that is I try to keep a record of where I amevery time my odometer turns over to the next thousand miles. Well,Traveler turned 11,000 on the Red Belt’s “Big Sewickley Creek Rd”at Hitzel Hill Rd. @ 11:43 hrs. Then I will log it in about that ridewhere I was going and who I was with! Do you do that?

One more thing that I did that is worth a chuckle or two. Onshort and slower rides I usually don’t use ear plugs, but today I thoughtit best because of the wind, so in they went at Bob Evans. So, whenwe got to the Shousetown Boatyard, I couldn’t get the ear plug out ofmy right ear. Ha, ...for a moment Ralph looked like he was going totryand help me with that problem, (Editor: I was, too... I was justtrying to think of what could be used to do that) then instantly Ithought that’s not a good idea. What would you think if you just thendrove by and had seen Ralph fiddling around my ear? Ha! Well Iwound up using a the smallest key I had to get the right plug out, andit worked! Did that ever happen to you? I guess the moral is, letthose plugs stick out a bit.

RIDING THE WIRESBy Don Poremski

It was a complete stranger who told me of the fun to be had in theHocking Hills doing the “Canopy Tour”. That he gushed about thefun to be had would be an understatement so there was research tobe done.

Yes, there was a thing called the Hocking Hills Canopy Tourwith web site, contact information and a fetching young blonde onthe home page. Okay, it was a bit distant for the club members of theMOC, Four Winds and the Canton Motorcycle Club, but as is said,“nothing ventured”. The call went out and five willing adventurersbraved cold, wind and threats of rain to do the tour. Our “Ziprincess”was Judy Gau, the “Lone Winder” Sean Barrett, Paul (I can fit a 44harness) Mitchell, the “Lad Hungarian” Laszlo Repay and the au-thor.

It was 93 down to Logan and 33 to Rockbridge. Route 93 is oftenreferred to as “The Harley Mother Road” and in keeping with thatminatory moniker, our group of four had its own “chase vehicle”, aMazda Miata for Judy and Laszlo, the latter who does not own anelectric vest and the former who just hates riding in high winds. Inretrospect, the riding wasn’t too bad for all the chill and wind gusts. There are just enough turns to keep it interesting if you ignore thoseconservative speed suggestions. The Harley dudes can take them atthe signage speeds without threat of grounding those triple chromeplated Screaming Eagle mufflers.

You arrive, sign in, take a load off before your time group iscalled. Then you suit up in a body harness, trolley, and safety linesbefore receiving instruction at the ground school. Let the guides hookyou up, sit down and zip the line. Look for the signal from the otherguide to slow down if need be by placing a gloved palm on the cableBEHIND the trolley and your kiester has landed. Then it’s an ATVride to the starting point with ten zips and several rope bridges be-fore a sort of rappel to the ground. None of the group had a problemwith heights and that’s a good thing.

At the start of each zip, Jeremiah would go first; then all weneeded was Love (ruh-ta-da-da-da) to hook you up, sit down, andzip. What a ride—gliding through the forest canopy, over caves andthe Hocking (not a river because it’s not 100 miles long). Afterarrival, your safety lines are switched from zip lines to security lineson the tree platforms. You are then asked to step around the tree toawait the arrival of the next zipper, which could be viewed throughthe crotch of the tree.

Yeah, there was screaming, but then that’s how Judy took hermind off the flowing waters nearby. There was styling, too: ball upfor speed or lie back to look at the overhead leafy roof. For those whodeclined, we understand. It was a bit of a hardship getting there andback, but we had great fun in the process. Judy, Paul, and Laszlo gotto look at the Canton M/C clubhouse and we four from Ohio hadbreakfast at The Station restaurant also in Brewster: good food andcheap. Sean had the longest ride home which gets him further kudos. All arrived home safe and mostly dry. Those who haven’t had thechance should try route 78 between Nelsonville and Caldwell. Wastempted to do a side trip on the triple nickel, but the barn beckoned.Had to pass only two vehicles eastbound the whole way.

So, if you hear a club member tell you to, “Zip it!”, he or she issuggesting you do the canopy tour,…..I think.
