Last month’s question: Why is the London Stock Exchange sometimes referred to as “Gorgonzola Hall”? Answer: In 1884 the London Stock Exchange was rebuilt as the great marble temple known as 'Gorgonzola Hall'. So dubbed for its resemblance to the cheese with its rich green veins running through the marble of the floor. (Once again, thanks to Susan Davis and Leanne Robinson from the Modesto Chapter. It seems I can’t find a question to stump them) This month’s question: On the show “Petticoat Junction”, who owned and drove the blue 1953 F-100?

John Walsh represented the Club at the Silicon Valley Run. He reports a great run, with the highlight being a stop at the “Great Highway”, a personal collection of muscle and super cars. He also enjoyed an authentic Mexican lunch at the winery.

On May 5th, the Modesto Shriners rented a bus to take our group on a private tour of the Shriner’s Hospital in Sacramento. The hospital specializes in injuries to children, specifically orthopedic and burn injuries. There were 14 of us on the trip: Bill and Ieko Click, John and Judy Snyder, Bob Hansen, Carl Piercefield, Mike and Leanne Robinson, John and Linda Walsh, Mike Keller, Tom and Cheryl Day, and Chris Souza. Our personal tour included classrooms, play areas, the workshops where each child’s needs are handled on a one-on-one basis. The Hospital is free to children, regardless of economic or social status, and supported 100% by donations. It was fulfilling to know that the Modesto F-100 Elite’s donations are utilized for such a good cause.

On May 19th, the Turlock Alchemist Shrine Clowns did their 2nd annual car show at the Fairgrounds in Turlock. Bob and Susan Hansen, John Walsh, and Chris Souza attended the show. The show was complete with lunch and large raffle. Shady parking, and the clowns were fun for all. All proceeds were donated to the Shriner’s work. Next year, we’ll make sure we get the word out sooner to other chapters, so we can make a good showing.

Who’s Working on What

We continue working on Back to Graffiti coming up in June – T-shirts are done, dash plaques and trophies are ordered. The Fruit Yard will have live music with dinner on Friday night with Eric Scudder and the Beer 30 Band. Don’t miss out on any of these great activities – thanks for your past support. Call John and Linda to sign up! Check out last year’s trophy cars! Mike Wikka is working on another fantastic year in the truck pull circuit. He took 1st in points in the first pull of the year with his ’76 Chevy pickup, 550ci, 1130 hp, L & L Production motor with a turbo 350. We’ll be working to get Mike to put a Ford oval somewhere on that Chevy truck!

It was a great day for the Easter Run (4-6-12). Lots of vehicles showed up even before the scheduled check in time. We decided to go early ourselves to help Delta Chapter out just in case, as we are the closest chapter to the park. If there had been club participation we would have won it hands down as all of us made it to our first Easter run as the new Port City Chapter. Art won an award for Under Construction; he thinks it is because of his neat under construction sign. But the judges must have seen something in the Suede Renegade. Some of the group went home with some raffle prizes and that was great too. The Easter Bunny showed up like he usually does and delighted the kids. They had plenty of eggs out in the grass to scoop up into their baskets. They also had a great chance to win one of the many baskets that Livermore helped to put together. We had a chance to join in on the fun on that rainy and windy day, the last Saturday in March. Sydney made some great soup, salad and French bread to eat after we finished our tasks. April is the month for Taxes but it is also the month that most of the Friday night car shows start in our area. The

first and third Friday is at Royce Farms and the first Friday we joined in on the fun. It was a small group but as the weather gets warmer. So will the participation. We had planned on going to the car show at Bagel’s Express (which will be the second and fourth Friday). But Mother Nature had to have her way and it was canceled due to the bad weather. But there will be plenty more where that is concerned. The weekend after Easter (4-15-12) was another opportunity to check on some parts for our vehicles. Stockton had their annual spring swap meet at the Fairgrounds. Art put his truck in the car show and low and behold he got another award for under construction. If he keeps getting awards he may never finish the construction of the Suede Renegade. They saw a few people they knew including Royce Farms guys passing out flyers for their Friday Cruise Nights.

We were all in force (Art, Howard, Jim and his Dad James) at A & W Thursday’s (4-19-12) cruise night. It was kind of special as the Discovery Channel had been there most of the day filming for special drive-ins of America. If you do not know Lodi’s A & W is the first A & W of the USA. Pete the owner by the end of the day was getting frazzled as it took over 25 different hamburgers and numerous glasses and glasses of root beer floats to get that special one that would look good for the camera. This A & W is one of the remaining franchise’s that still makes their root beer syrup from scratch EVERY day. To top it off there were over 50 cars in attendance that night. Pete the owner wanted our president Art to say a few words for the camera. But our guy was camera shy. You never know Art you could have been discovered. Now, I do not know for what but you never know. As soon as we find out when the documentary special will be on we will give everyone a heads up to watch.

What a great night to be outside and see some great cars (4-20-12). Plus it did not hurt that we were at Royce Farm Restaurant. We listened to a great band that consisted of guys that work at different Auto Dealerships. We did not win anything in the raffle but we did get together and chatted with a couple of our new prospective members, Mario and Jim. The weather was so nice it seemed like a July night it was so warm. It was hard to believe that we were basking in April nights. The first month of Royce’s has come to an end. But we have many more to enjoy. Come out and enjoy a great meal, great cars and great company. You know where we will be the first and third Friday anyway.

Page 6: June 2012

April sure has been a busy month for us (4-22-12). Here we are going to our second swap meet of the month. Howard and Art must be getting tired of each other. They have probably seen more each other this month than they did while they were going to school. It is great that they have more to talk about than just cars and trucks. OH, wait isn’t that the only thing that counts. Art was able to find some wide fenders out of fiberglass for a great price and Howard was able to find some stainless tips for his exhaust at a great price. He is just not sure which vehicle he is going to put them on yet. They tried to find a frame for our other member Jim but there was none to be found. This swap meet seemed to have way more Ford parts than the swap meet earlier in the month. So the guys came home happy and just before the heat really set in. The weather finally cooperated for the Bagel Express Cruise Night (4-27-12) put on by CVC (Central Valley Cruisers). They had a turnout of 28 cars. Art brought his El Camino, as the Suede Renegade was under the weather at this time. But he is hoping to bring it to the next Friday night. He even had a little girl want to have her picture taken with him in front of the Camino. Hopefully she will like old cars when she gets older as we need new blood.

And now for this month’s Port City Chit Chat……..

Silicon Run was a blast (4-28-12). Art was the only one that was able to make this annual event. He hitched a ride with Nancy from Livermore. His back paid for all that riding though the event but the raffle made it all worthwhile. In fact most of the people sitting at one table altogether during lunch/raffle seemed to clean up in the raffle. They had had a pretty good turn out with all sorts of vehicles. We hope that our event will be just as eventful.

Our chapter has been keeping busy all Month either going out to runs or getting ready for our run next month. We try to make the weekly Friday night functions or A & W Thursday nights. Fridays it is either at our meeting place (Royce Farms) or Bagel Express. Plus it is a great excuse for not having to cook on on those nights. Art and Howard have been busy passing out flyers for our run (plus work the show) and that was no exception May 5th. They traveled to Copperopolis for the Hot Copper Car Show. It was a gold mine of a show as they had over 300 cars. The weather was not too hot and the wind seemed to stay away till they almost left the show. On another note we met a father who happened to be listening to Art and Howard talking up our show. He let us know that he had a son in our neck of the woods that was looking for a club to join. More to come on this.

Page 7: June 2012

7

We have been trying to hit all the car shows in the area either to pass out flyers or to join in on the fun. May 19th was one of them. Howard’s Son Kenneth had a friend that was putting on their first car show. And it was just around the street

Page 8: June 2012

from us at Calvary 1st Assembly of God Church. The Wanted Souls Motorcycle Club put it on in memory of their founder Glenn Cosens. They had a small turn out but it was their first time. We had a great time and both Art and Howard each won a raffle prize. They were able to get the largest motorcycle to be put on display. With your entry you received a lunch consisting of a hot dog, chips and drink. Not bad of a show for them putting it together in just a short time- - - - - - - 4 months.

The next day we headed out to the Stockton swap meet at the Stockton fairgrounds to do our flyer thing then headed out to Micke’s Grove for the All Ford Picnic. It was a small turn out compared to past years. But we did not mind as we met our first prospective Members Ron and Cindy Cortiz. He is the son who’s father we talked to at the Hot Copper Copperopolis Car Show. We gave him the ups and downs and wonders of the club. The truck he has used to be his Dad’s then his brother’s but after awhile it was given to him as he seemed to be more interested in restoring it than anybody else. He is attempting slowly to get it back to its special glory. We will let you know more about him in the coming months.

Art hit the road on the May 26th to attend the Foothill Classics Car Club Car Show in Valley Springs that is always the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend. This will be their 9th year and always brings out lots of vehicles. The weather cooperated for the show but as the flyer says rain or shine as in other years Mother Nature wants to rain just around Memorial Day and this year she had the day before the event. But at least it was not over 100 as it has also been that kind of weather too.

We had to hit one more car show before the end of the month. This time in the town of Manteca called the Marine Cpl. Charles O. Palmer II Classic Car Show. We were amazed of all the cars at this show. We thought it was just a show but it was a SHOW. It had over 300 cars including a couple of our former club members (San Joaquin) Jesse Aguilar and his Dad Joe Aguilar. It also had some great old armed forces vehicles and they had a great fly by done by a plane. It was great to see this kind of show on Memorial Day Weekend. We hope to see everyone at our car show event on June 10th. We have scoped out the park and have been collecting raffle gifts galore. There will be a jumping house for the kids and great food prepared by Royce Farm Restaurant.

Page 10: June 2012

They have lots of picnic tables so there will lots of room for everyone. June is almost here and North South is just around the corner. This year is going so fast.

I am doing much better with each passing day. I owe a lot of this to the support that I have received from all the great friends that I have made over the years as a member of F-100 Elite. I don't know what I would do without all of you. THANK YOU ALL! Mike Guerreiro Silicon Valley Chapter

************************************************************************************* Last night my friend and I were sitting in the living room and I said to her, “I never want to live in a vegetative state, dependent on some maching and fluids from a bottle. If that ever happens, just pull the plug.” She got up, unplugged the computer, and threw out my wine. She’s such a witch!! Stolen from a past issue of “The Fat Ford Times”

FIGHT SPEEDING TICKETS WITH THE NEWLY RELEASED IPHONE APP, ‘TICKETDEFENDER’! TicketDefender tracks and reports vehicle’s speeds to protect drivers from undeserved speeding tickets. TicketDefender is a newly released iPhone App that enables drivers to protect themselves from undeserved speeding tickets by providing a printed report that shows their vehicle’s GPS speed and location prior to the issuance of a ticket. Police radar makes mistakes, lots of them. In America more than 100,000 people per day receive speeding tickets. Some experts estimate that 10-20% of all radar-backed speeding tickets are issued in error and in the case of radar operated from a moving police vehicle the number of inaccurate tickets may be as high as 30%! Yet, the use of Radar is widely accepted and we naturally assume the technology is reliable1. But good news is just an Apple App away. After a truck driver received one these erroneous speeding tickets, he decided that something had to be done. He presented his idea to a friend who is an engineer, and

TicketDefender was born. As a user drives their vehicle TicketDefender automatically records the speed, time of day, and GPS location. If the driver is pulled over for speeding, he simply clicks “Press When Ticketed” to capture the last hour of data and generate the free Speed Report and free Map Report. Instructions for how to print these non-editable, encrypted and watermarked Speed and Map Reports are sent to the driver’s email address. These two reports can be used in court as evidence against wrongfully issued tickets to protect drivers from “the officer’s word against mine” situations. The TicketDefender Speed and Map Reports include the vehicle’s make and model, license number, time and date, the vehicle’s speed recorded every 3-5 seconds and a map showing the vehicle’s location and corresponding speed. If the speed on the TicketDefender report is different from the speed indicated on the ticket, the driver has a valid "not guilty" argument. This report can then be presented in court or with employers in defense of inaccurate speeding tickets. Radar can often clock incorrect vehicle speeds causing an unwarranted ticket, but until the release of TicketDefender there has been no way for drivers to prove that they were driving at a speed that was different from the speed stated on the ticket. TicketDefender can be a valuable tool, both for fighting speeding tickets and for proof of speed at the time of a car accident. TicketDefender is certainly a benefit for any driver or commuter and particularly beneficial for individuals whose livelihood depends on a positive driving record such as truckers, bus and taxi drivers. TicketDefender will track any vehicle in which the phone is located, once the vehicle’s data has been entered. One TicketDefender download can be used for multiple vehicles including company and family member’s vehicles. TicketDefender will also multitask; it continues to track speed and locations while you use the phone and other applications. The one time download of TicketDefender can be used repeatedly to give a lifetime of protection from undeserved or inaccurate speeding tickets. 1 Source: Blind Trust published by RADAR (Radio Association Defending Airwave Rights, Inc.)

HOW TO KILL AN ASSOCIATION Don’t participate beyond paying your dues – let “them” handle things. Then complain that members have no voice in management Decline all offices and committee appointments – your to busy. Then offer vociferous advice on how things should be done If appointed to a committee, don’t work – it’s a courtesy appointment. Then complain because the organization has stagnated If you do attend management meetings, don’t initiate new ideas. Then you can play “devil’s advocate” to those submitted by others Don’t rush to pay your dues – they’re too high anyways. Then complain about poor financial management Don’t encourage others to become members – that’s selling. Then complain that membership is not growing Don’t read the mail from headquarters – it’s not important. Then complain that you’re not informed Don’t volunteer your talents – that’s ego fulfillment. Then complain that your never asked, never appreciated And if by chance, the organization grows in spite of your contributions, grasp every opportunity to tell the youngsters how tough it was, how hard you worked in the old days to bring the organization to its present level of success (Reprinted from the Journal of the Virginia Academy of Family Practice) (Submitted by Mike Guerriero, Silicon Valley Chapter)
