Rose Delgado is a little mom with big boys. Rose has achondroplasia, a disorder of bone growth that causes

the most common type of dwarfism. When she became pregnant with her first son, Miguel, now aged six, she looked for a Vancouver obstetrician with the right kind of expertise.

Joy Wiens, MD an OB/GYN physician at PeaceHealth Medical Group, has experience with achondroplasia. “Dr Wiens had this experience — that’s why I chose her, and boy was that the right decision,” said Rose.

Dr. Wiens meticulously planned Miguel’s birth. However, baby had his own plans and Rose went into premature labor, causing complications for little Miquel. Fortunately, he was cared for by neonatology providers at PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center’s NICU, who are on site 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Today, Miguel is happy and healthy. And, so is little brother, Mateo, also delivered by Dr. Wiens.

Men Do MatterI just finished reading the book I had always wanted to write. (Big load off my shoulders.) “Save the Males: Why Men Matter, Why Women Should Care” by Kathleen Parker (2008) gives a voice to what I’ve slowly been discovering ever since I got married and started sharing my life with a real man—that today’s women have been duped into believing that men are obsolete. While

I’m the first to admit that understanding Martians will probably always elude me, I can proudly say that I love the men in my life, and value their contribution to the marketplace, education, and most importantly, to families.

It’s a long and deliberate process for women to unlearn the resentment toward men that was taught us for so long, but the time to embrace all that men can and do bring to the table was yesterday—when men started eschewing community and family involvement for fear of being wrongly accused, betrayed, or simply misunderstood. And when our sons started paying the price. Now that we live in a world where most male characters on TV are jerks or dolts, how can we expect our little guys to grow up to be great husbands, fathers, and men of integrity? (See Preparing Boys to Be Fathers, pg. 20.)

We all know real creeps are out there, but guys have a way of living up to the expectations we place on them. So let’s set the bar high, and delight in our fathers’, brothers’, boyfriends’, husbands’, uncles’, and sons’ efforts. The quality of our families and communities depends on it.

Insightful answers to tough questions.

DEAR DANA

D E A R D A N A

continued on page 10

Dear Dana,

The first time my wife got pregnant, she kicked the smoking habit. Six months after our baby boy was born, she started smoking again. Pregnant with baby two, she’s quit again, but she’s admitted since she heard smokers deliver smaller babies, smoking during pregnancy tempts her, as our baby boy was a big ‘un. Her mom and sister both smoke, delivered small babies and still smoke. That’s not helping. Nor are her family’s claims that smoking helps them keep their weight down. Still, while my wife spared our son and me the suffering from her second-hand smoke by doing the dirty deed outside, I still want her to quit for good this time. She says she wants to, but what will make it happen this time? – No Ifs Ands Or Butts

Dear NIAOB,Congratulations on your wife’s pregnancy and on her quitting smoking!

Mother Nature seems to lend a helping hand; studies show cigarettes simply don’t taste as good to most smokers during pregnancy. That, coupled with social support and the strong desire to deliver a healthy baby, makes quitting smoking easier for pregnant women. Staying quit, however, is more than half the battle. Research shows over 60 percent of moms who quit smoking during pregnancy return to smoking 6 months to a year later. The American Lung Association notes about 46 million people (21 percent of the U.S. population) smoke cigarettes even though 74 percent of adult smokers in the U.S. report that they want to quit.

Yet, “It takes several ‘practice quits’ before most smokers are able to quit for good,” explains Bev Stewart, Mountain Pacific Regional Director of Health Initiatives for the American Lung Association. “Anti-

smoking medications [often not an option during pregnancy] help reduce the urge for nicotine. However, it takes a change in behavior to move past withdrawal and into recovery.”

When it comes to the odds of a smoker delivering a healthy baby, Clint Eastwood’s famous “Do you feel lucky?” line applies. Maybe these facts from the U.S. Center of Disease Control and www.PubMed.gov about the impact of smoking on families will help counter some of your wife’s family’s “advice.”

1. Smoking is the number one cause for poor pregnancy outcomes, including neonatal mortality and stillbirth, preterm delivery, and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).

2. Infants born to mothers who smoke weigh less than other infants, and low birth weight is a key predictor for infant mortality.

3. Secondhand smoke is the number one cause of asthma and other breathing problems and middle ear infections among children.

4. Children exposed to secondhand smoke become “prewired” to feel good if they smoke, and are twice as likely to become addicted to smoking than children from nonsmoking families.

5. Nearly 450,000 people in the United States die prematurely from cigarette smoking or exposure to secondhand smoke annually.

By the way, smoking outside isn’t as baby-safe as it seems. Smoking toxins are sticky stuff, and cling to smoker’s skin and clothing. When a Mom who’s smoked picks up her baby after smoking, unless she scrubs up after smoking and changes into smoke-free clothes, those smoking toxins will be passed on to her baby.

You can play a positive role in supporting your wife’s desire to permanently quit, by working with her to find out what works for her, from her perspective. That means not nagging, though you can offer some support ideas to get the ball rolling.

“Ongoing support makes a big difference. Don’t wait to praise and reward success, especially in those first few days,” advises Stewart. “Take walks, offer calls of support, help out however you can and let them know how much you appreciate them and the effort they’re making. ‘Slips’ [‘quitters’ picking up and smoking a cigarette] are notunusual in the first three months.”

Mother Nature seems to lend a helping hand; studies show cigarettes simply don’t taste as good to most smokers during pregnancy. That, coupled with social support and the strong desire to deliver a healthy baby, makes quitting smoking easier for pregnant women.

RESOURCES

Dear Dana (contined)

Smoking cessation expert and former smoker Ken Wassum, the Associate Director, Clinical Development and Support for Alere Wellbeing, suggests:

Using loving “I-statements” when broaching the subject, like, “How can I best support your desire to quit smoking?” Or, “I’m concerned about having a healthy baby.” Asking if checking in on how she’s doing will help her stay on track, or, if she’d consider it an annoyance and would prefer if you say or ask nothing about her progress. Offering to make her life easier by taking the kids out, doing the dishes, changing the diapers. Changing routines normally related to smoking, like taking a walk together after breakfast, if that’s when she’d normally light up. Celebrating success by going on a date in a non-smoking restaurant and out to a movie.

While quitting is not easy, studies show that tobacco users are two to three times more likely to quit successfully if they receive help, especially skills training, counseling, and medication, such as nicotine replacement patches and gum. The American Lung Association’s 800-LUNGUSA (800-586-4872) provides free assistance from registered nurses and free booklets on the effects of smoking, smoking triggers, dealing with stress and weight gain from smoking and references to local programs. Call, or better yet, encourage your wife to call either The American Lung Association, or the Tobacco Quitline at 1-800-QUIT-NOW, a great resource for finding out what smoking cessation programs are available from Washington State and employer health insurance programs.

Dana Greyson enjoyed her brief stint as a smoking cessation “Quit Coach” for Alere Wellbeing. She’s proud of her mother’s ability to permanently quit smoking after Dana’s brother picked up a cigarette and Mom said she “Couldn’t tell him not to smoke if I had a cigarette in my mouth.”

When a Mom who’s smoked picks up her baby after smoking, unless she scrubs up after smoking and changes into smoke-free clothes, those smoking toxins will be passed on to her baby.

What’s sweeter than summer? A summer packed with free activities guaranteed to please kids of all ages. For those who like to map out their fun ahead of time, here’s a sneak peek at some of the favorite freebies to be found around Vancouver from June through August.

The Summer Reading Program is Fort Vancouver Regional Library District’s biggest, most popular program of the year. This year, babies through sixth-graders are encouraged to “Dream Big, Read,” and seventh- to 12th-graders are encouraged to “Own the Night.” Three separate programs have been specially designed to entice different age levels (0-5 years old, 6-11 years old, and 12-19 years old) to participate. Each participant has the opportunity to enter the grand prize drawing after they complete the designated reading or fun activity. There will be one winner per branch per age group. The grand prizes include a membership to Portland Children’s Museum, OMSI, or Oregon Zoo, $300 gift card for an overnight stay at Great Wolf Lodge Indoor Waterpark Resort, Kindle Fire, Nook Tablet, $200 Amazon or $200 Barnes & Noble gift cards. For more information, visit your local branch or the regional website at www.fvrl.org, or call Telephone Info Services at 360-906-5106.

To support the summer reading program, library branches host a huge

array of entertainment throughout the summer, from tie dye parties for teens to magic shows, clowns and ice cream socials for the whole family. And don’t forget their science and reptile shows, book buddies and story times—FVRL has something for every member of the family. Contact your local branch, visit www.fvrl.org, or check out Vancouver Family Magazine’s calendar of events each month for details on upcoming events and locations.

Home Grown Heroes Puppet Show, June 29, 11 a.m. You don’t have to have super powers to be a hero! That’s the theme of the show presented by Dragon Theater Puppets at Kazoodles, 13503 SE Mill Plain, Vancouver. Watch as a band of super heroes team up to fight “The Bad Idea,” a villain with plans to stop the world from having creative minds.

Where’s Waldo? Treasure Hunt, July 1-July 31 In celebration of the 25th anniversary of Martin Handford’s “Where’s Waldo?” Vintage Books in Cascade Park (6613 East Mill Plain Blvd, Vancouver) is hosting a month-long treasure

hunt inside 20 small, local businesses. The object of the search is to collect a card for each Waldo found. After accumulating a certain number of cards, winners can cash in for a “Where’s Waldo?” birthday button. Additional cards allow hunters to enter a drawing for various door prizes. The grand prize winner will receive an entire set of “Waldo” books. For more details, keep an eye out for Waldo at local businesses or contact Vintage Books at 360-694-9519, or www.vintage-books.com.

Feature Article: Men's Health: Regular Exams Necessary to Keeping Men's Bodies Healthy

While it is an often spoken stereotype that men don’t go to the doctor, for many men there is a lot of truth to the statement. However, taking the time to develop a good doctor-patient relationship with your family physician when you are healthy is a good investment in your future. Your doc can talk to you about simple health screenings, necessary blood work, weight control, and any other male-related concerns. Yes, many of the following health tests are inconvenient and uncomfortable. However, these tests have the potential to save your life. PSA Screening The PSA test, which detects the level of prostate-specific antigen, a substance produced by the prostate gland in the blood, is recommended for men at the age of 50, because an elevated level of PSA in the blood can indicate a possible benign (not cancerous) prostate condition or prostate cancer. Doctors can use the PSA test along with a digital rectal exam to detect cancer in men who have no symptoms. It is also recommended for men in their 40s to have a PSA screening if they have either past male-related problems or if they have a family history of prostate cancer. So are men off the hook if they’re not yet 50? David David MD, family practitioner at PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center suggests that men in their 30s and 40s should check

in with their doctor to build that trusted relationship in order to ask their doctor various health questions and establish baselines for their health history. Cholesterol “The two biggest killers of middle-aged men are heart attack/strokes and cancer,” said Dr. David. High blood cholesterol levels are a major risk factor for both heart disease and stroke. An unhealthy diet results in high cholesterol as well as if you have a family history of high cholesterol. “It’s important for men to not only know their total cholesterol number but also the breakdown of their ‘good’ cholesterol (HDL), ‘bad’ (LDL), and triglycerides,” said David. High cholesterol can be reduced by a low saturated fat diet, weight loss and physical exercise. Medication can also be prescribed by your doc, but can’t replace a healthy diet. If your cholesterol numbers are in the normal range, your cholesterol can be checked every three years. So What’s Your BMI? Body Mass Index is the estimate of body fat and is calculated by your height and weight. You can easily determine your BMI by going online to sites such as Center for Disease Control and plug in your weight and height. A healthy BMI range is between 20-24.

According to the National Institute of Health, a 5-10 percent reduction in weight can significantly reduce health risk factors. Weight loss reduces your risk for coronary heart disease and high blood pressure, Type 2 Diabetes, and certain cancers. Diet modification and increased exercise will lower your BMI. Depression Again, the doctor-patient relationship is important for men to develop so they can talk with their doctor about any concerns of depressive thoughts. Counseling and/or medication may be recommended. Depression is a treatable condition, and one that effects both the mind and body. Low Testosterone A common overlooked condition that affects 10 percent of middle-aged men is low testosterone levels. Men are often reluctant to talk to their doctor about non-specific symptoms like low sex drive, slow metabolism, low energy and irritability/moodiness. Dr. David said that oftentimes the wife is the one who drags her husband in to talk to the doc. A physician can order blood tests and discuss with his patient the various options available. Other Cancers Men have a higher rate of skin cancer according to the National Council of Skin Care Prevention. Your health care provider will have recommendations for skin cancer screening. However, if you have a family history of skin cancer, get in to see a dermatologist sooner than the recommendation. Skin cancer is treatable if caught in the early stages. The American Cancer Society reports colon cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer. Depending on your health care provider, men over the age of 50 are recommended to have a sigmoidoscopy or a colonoscopy. A fecal occult blood test may be your first step in determining when you will require a colonoscopy.

Staying informed about your health and making your health a priority takes effort, but your body will thank you later. Jan Udlock is a Pacific Northwest freelance writer and mother of five.

Many of us have grown up with the examples of Al Bundy, Homer Simpson, Peter Griffin, Ray Barone, and a cast of other TV dads who have made us laugh, groan, roll our eyes, and wonder how a husband and father could be so lovable yet so inept. While these characters can be funny on a sitcom, in real life they would be annoying, frustrating, and in some cases referred to Child Protective Services. Unfortunately, these portrayals of men are what our boys are seeing and being entertained by, causing them to wonder just what it means to be a good husband and father and how one goes about becoming one.

When asked about the challenges that boys and fathers today face regarding having a distorted view of marriage, family, and fatherhood, Brandon Farrell, Battle Ground father of two replied, “One of the biggest threats to a young man’s view of family, women, and relationships is modern media. Really listen to the music your kids and maybe even you are listening to. Pay attention to how the husband in the evening sitcom relates to his wife and kids. What is that teaching your boy about sex and relationships? If that is behavior that you wouldn’t allow in your house, why allow your kids to watch it?” In today’s society, with media having such a profound impact on our children, how do we help our boys learn how to be the kind of husbands and fathers we can be proud of?

Howard Hiton is a Portland-area counselor, father of two boys, and co-author of “BAM! Boys Advocacy and Mentoring: Helping Boys Connect Through Physical Challenge and Strategic Storytelling, a Guidebook for Leading Boys Groups.” Regarding challenges that boys and fathers today face, he notes, “The expectations for dads and boys are changing. More than ever, men are expected to share parenting responsibilities, which is a positive change. However, since this is a relatively new trend, men tend not to have many examples of engaged fathers. In addition, men often undervalue what they have to offer when it comes to raising children and are not as likely as women to seek support or assistance in parenting. Moreover, as a culture, we tend to highlight the trouble males get into and forget to support them for the good things they bring us. Dads can learn to treat their jobs as fathers as the most important role in their lives.”

He goes on to advise, “Regarding our sons, we must realize that part of the problem boys have in meeting the world has to do with the way the world meets them. We have to change the way we look at boys by focusing on their strengths and viewing their preferences simply as preferences not as problems.”

Oftentimes, boys’ behavior is seen as problematic when they are actually doing what comes naturally. In order to help our

boys, we need to understand them better. This means looking beyond misbehavior at what underlying need is not being met. Are our boys being physically challenged enough? Are they being emotionally challenged enough? How can we as parents, teachers, coaches, counselors, and mentors help them? In his book, “Childhood and Society,” renowned human development theorist Erik Erikson suggests that fathers and sons can benefit greatly from knowing how to build upon seven developmental foundation stones:

Security. Our boys need to feel safe and know they are protected. As fathers, we need to be stable, reliable, and consistent. We also need to show them physical and emotional affection as a way to add to our son’s sense of security.

Trust. If we add to security by being reliable with our time, keeping our promises, and being consistent in meeting our son’s physical needs, then trust will more naturally occur.

Love. Unconditional, genuine love that helps him see himself as a person of worth. A son who is loved by his father will see himself as lovable.

Acceptance. This must also be unconditional. A son who is accepted believes he belongs in his family and is an important part of it.

Self-esteem. Your son’s self-esteem will be largely dependent upon the recognition, attention, and appreciation he receives from his father. A son who holds himself in high regard is better able to accept the worth and potential of others.

Freedom. Your son will need your okay to explore, be independent, and make decisions on his own, even wrong ones. Give your son space to be himself.

Limits. Your son will not always be the best judge of his own interests, so some limitations and direction will be imperative. Establish boundaries early on and renegotiate the rules as your son matures.

Despite a barrage of poor examples in the media, our boys are being raised by men who are participating in more of the hands-on parenting duties than any preceding generation of men. If this trend continues, our sons and grandsons have a wonderful opportunity to redefine what it means to be a husband and father in a very positive way. With our continued understanding, support, and patience, they will get there, one eye roll at a time.

Feature Story: Set Sail, Family Style

“Sailing is unplugged. It’s very in-the-moment. It’s about focus. It’s about tuning in. In a few hours, even a five year old can learn to make a boat go where they want it to go,” declares LauraLee Symes, Willamette Sailing Club Manager.

For the uninitiated, sailing seems dangerous, difficult and expensive. With the right approach, it can be safe, simple, and affordable. In a time when many families find themselves adrift, a shared love of sailing can serve as the tie to form strong family bonds and provide a sense of direction, on and off the water.

The Pacific Northwest is an international Mecca for summer sailing: strong, steady winds, warm fresh water, and excellent youth training programs. For those desiring a simple start, Vancouver Lake and the Willamette River offer easy places to learn to sail. For those curious or serious about world-class competitive high wind sailing, the nearby Columbia Gorge beckons.

A Family AffairLocal sailing instructors walk the talk, and speak passionately about sailing’s impact on their lives.

The Brady Bunch of Sailing“I met my husband by walking into Willamette Sailing Club because I never sailed before and wanted to learn how,” confesses Symes. The Symeses later formed a Brady Bunch,

with three girls and three boys. “Our kids joke, ‘It’s sail or move out! ’ They all sail; they grew up helping out at competitions.” Nicole Carman, Symes’ oldest daughter, just graduated with honors in April from the California Maritime Academy. LauraLee is the Secretary of the Laser Class Association of North America (the Laser is an Olympic class sailboat sailed competitively around the world). Her husband Bill is the President of the Columbia Gorge Racing Association and won the Laser World Championship in his class last year.

Early Start A 44-year-old with 35 years of sailing experience, Lake Vancouver Sailing

School Director Ray McCormack admits he strapped his son into their sailboat while he was still in a car seat. Of course, McCormack carefully secured the car seat and made sure his son wore a life vest. His son, now seven, loves sailing whenever he can with his dad. His teenage daughter, a less avid sailor, still enjoys taking the helm when their family sails the Columbia River. McCormack is currently preparing for the

“Race to Remember,” sailing a 27-foot sailboat over 2,000 miles from San Francisco to Hawaii this summer as a fund-raising effort to keep young girls out of the sex trade.

Our Sailboat was Home“When my wife came home from the hospital with our first child, ‘home’ was our sailboat,” reminisces Dave Cannard. Cannard, who runs Columbia Gorge Racing Association’s (CRGA) Youth Sailing Program, grew up in Vancouver and currently straddles the line between Washougal and Skamania county.

Sailing Opened New Options “Not a lot of people develop the skills to sail a boat. It makes you feel like you’ve really accomplished something,” proudly shares Dennis “DJ” McCord, a Vancouver Heritage Senior and Cascade Pacific Council Sea Scout Junior Officer. “Sailing is fun and Sea Scouts is very hands on. You really get to learn a lot about the water, how to navigate it, even finding out firsthand what happens when you flip a sailboat. It’s still safer than driving. My sailing connections opened up a whole new range of exciting options I wouldn’t have discovered otherwise.” Cascade Pacific Council Sea Scouts ship, “City of Roses” won the 2012 Region Council trophy. McCord bought his own sailboat, and is actively involved in mentoring Sea Scout students and instructors.

Getting a Great Start

While simply starting sailing Vancouver Lake may be the most your family tackles, our local sailing instructors offer these Dos and Don’ts to get off to a great start.

1. Do Start early. Teach your kids to get comfortable with the water and become good swimmers before they sail.

2. Don’t Push your kids past their comfort zone. Take baby steps.

3. Do Get involved as family, supporting sailing activities and sail together.

4. Don’t Yell at your kids. 5. Do Put safety first – always wear a life vest sailing,

put on sunscreen and dress appropriately for the weather and conditions.

6. Do Leave the initial lessons to the pros: competent sailors who know how to teach sailing.

7. Don’t Worry about what you don’t know. The sailing community is full of mentors eager to get you started.

What would build more self-esteem for your sailing-savvy child than having them take you out on a sail and teach you how to do it? What are you waiting for?

Dana Greyson moved to the Pacific NW to indulge her windsurfing habit in the Columbia Gorge. She’s now preparing for a multi-year international sailing journey, beginning in St. Lucia this September. You can follow her travels on www.GalleyWenchTales.com.

Why Car Seat Outreach? A properly used car seat reduces the risk of death by 71 percent for infants and 54 percent for toddlers. Yet studies show as much as 73 percent of car seats are incorrectly installed or do not fit the child properly.

Together with Kohl’s and ACTS Oregon, the Tom Sargent Safety Center at OHSU Doernbecher is launching a yearlong car seat outreach program to help reduce the number of children exposed to improper car seat use. Each month, certified child passenger safety technicians will check car seats for cor-rect installation, damage, recalls, and size/age appropriateness.

Car seats are available due to a generous donation from Kohl’s. These events are free to the general public.

What: Bring your car seats in your family vehicle for inspection to ensure they are being used correctly and properly installed. Replacement car seats may be available to families, when deemed necessary. Proof of financial assistance, i.e. WIC, Oregon Health Plan etc. and valid Oregon ID are required.
