T.J., a boy with developmental delays, is featured in “Chicken Soup for the

Soul: Children with Special Needs.” T.J. and his father, who’d long yearned

for a son, settled into a routine of daily outings.

Stacey, one of T.J.’s sisters, was moved when she realized how much their

father loved that together time. One day, as their dad made T.J. laugh, “T.J.

stopped and reached up to softly touch our father’s face,” Stacey writes. “My

dad looked down at him and said … ‘Well, kiddo, it looks like it’s you and me

for the rest of my life.’ There wasn’t a sense of sadness or burden in my

father’s voice, only acceptance and unconditional love.”

Our Father God says the same to each of us: “Well, kiddo, it’s you and me forever!” No matter our

weaknesses, our differences or even our tendencies to avoid time with him, God speaks with

complete acceptance and love. He loves being with us — just as we are — and rejoices to be ou

Father forever.

and love toward me. I givethanks to God for hisprovidence over JarrettownChurch. It is only throughChrist that in brokennessthere is healing; in conflict, peace; in divisions, new friendships emerge; and inthe betrayal of trust andwhat seems like a death, seeds of hope andresurrection again: OnlyGod can do that! We can live through tragic

experiences in life bothpersonally and as churcheswhen we know that bottomline, we belong to Christ.God has a vision and planfor Jarrettown Church tobecome more and more likeJesus. God’s plan has notchanged! The signs of a

church moving in the rightdirection are these:

1. You will see memberswho trust one anotherand trust God.

2. Members who are ‘real’people knowing they areflawed and in need of forgiveness.

3. Members who arecommitted to worship,

not because a malepastor is in the pulpit, but because Jesus Christreigns in the heart of thepastor.

4. You will hear testimoniesof God’s work in people’slives,

5. Feel the presence of theHoly Spirit,

6. Be surprised by graceexpressed in times of difficulty and failure

7. Be encouraged in yourlife; and

8. See people coming toChrist!

It is my prayer and hopethat Jarrettown Churchwould learn from this

difficult experience andhear God’s call again forthe church, which is “towelcome flawed andimperfect people and leadthem to faith in Christ.”That’s what growschurches.

The healthiest, growingand alive churches areplaces where those in

leadership and oncommittees, Sunday schoolteachers, worship leadersand team members, choirs, and everyone involved inministry exemplify evidencethat they are, “walking inthe Spirit.” What is thatevidence? “the fruit of theSpirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness,

goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against suchthings there is nolaw.”(Gal. 5:22; Eph. 5:9)  What would happen at

Jarrettown Church if themembers were known far

and wide by the “fruit of theSpirit” in all interactions?

Where all members livedintentionally to model theway of Christ, to inspire ashared vision, to challengethe practices that divide andhurt people, to discipleothers to action, in wordsencourage the heart of every person they meet!

What would happen?REVIVAL. When ministry gets tough

and circumstances work against your congregation, remember, God is faithful!Tell stories of God’s work

and healing, support and pray for one another, trustin the providence and promises of God. People findGod in church when faithful members show themwhat God is like; and they know themselves as peoplein need of forgiveness and grace. This is a churcheveryone wants to attend. This is the hope of theworld.

This is my prayer,Pastor Sharon

A little spiritual self-awareness quiz. Answer yourself honestlyon the fruits of the Spirit inyour own life on a scale of 1 to10. 10 means this is the way Iact today, 1 means I have a longway to go on this item.

c LOVE. Love is pre-eminentin my life. I see all people

through the eyes of Christ. Ihave a deep compassi6n forthe lost, the lonely, theweak and the poor. I ammagnanimous towardsthose who "get in my hair." Ikeep no record of wrongs. Igive selflessly, sometimestill it hurts. I go the extramile. I would rather forgive20 injuries than avengeone. God always comes

first.

c JOY. People know me formy joyful disposition evenwhen there is a cause togrieve. There is acontagious radiance aboutme because "the joy of theLord is my strength." Iremain strong and positive

when things gowrong because I trustin God. I am quick tosee the brighter sideof things. I know thatfor my shatteredplans, God has betterplans. My contentmentsprings from the knowledgethat God is sovereign andJesus is coming, again.

c PEACE. The peace of Godrules my heart and mind. Istay calm in disturbingsituations because my eyesare fixed on Jesus. With few exceptions (and I'mworking on these) I enjoywholesome and beautifulrelationships all round.

Whenever relationships arestrained or fractured I take

the initiative in movingtoward healing andrestoration. I can see thedark spots in my own lifeand am quick to confessthem. I am willing always topay the price of being apeace-maker in a world of bruised relationships.

c PATIENCE. I never makehasty judgements or speak hasty words. I am not quick at jumping to conclusions. I

am patient with peoplewhen they fail or fall. I faceopposition anddiscouragement withcomposure. I never give up.I keep cool while others arehot. I am not irritable oreasily angered. My"tolerance level" isextremely high. I can putup with a lot. I acceptpeople for who they are and

not for how they perform. When I confront others, they feel I do so because Icare!

c KINDNESS. People feel"love's touch" when they'rearound me. I am blessedwith a M-I-L-D disposition

(though, occasionally, I do

turn that "M" upside down).I let God deal with thebitterness, anger and malicein my heart. A deep respectand consideration forothers, coupled with aforgiving spirit, makesrelating to people such apleasure! The kindness of Jesus is seen in me.

c GOODNESS. Thegoodness of God touches

my life and then overflowsinto the lives of others. I ama caring person, a friendand neighbor to many. A genuine benevolencecharacterizes my life. WhenI see a need, I respond to itin the compassion of Christ.I am sensitive to the eviland suffering around, andseek to be an instrument of God's liberating touch.Uplifting the quality of people's lives is a majorconcern to me.

c FAITHFULNESS. I make

promises and keep them. Iam a man of my word.People can count on me.There is no gap in what Isay and what I do. Fidelityis the hallmark of mymarriage and othercommitments. I do not flirtwith the world or withanyone. I am true to theLord, to my spouse, topeople, and to causes that

God entrusts to me. Theyare all sacred to me!

c  MEEKNESS. I am willing"to go under" any yoke thatGod wants me to to beSUBMISSIVE to God and toone another out of ourmutual reverence forChrist. I freely and willinglyaccept all that God, in Hisprovidence, gives or

withholds from me. I amwilling to step "under theyoke" with Christ and myco-workers in kingdom

service. I am willing to step

aside when it is time to doso. I bring myself under theauthority of Christ and HisChurch. I can "glory in myinfirmities so that the powerof God may be mademanifest in me." I bearprovocation without beinginflamed by it. I give a softanswer when angry wordsare spoken. I respect myown rights and the rights of

others, willing to give upmine if the Lord so guidesme. I am a pro-actor not areactor. I relate to others asone among sinners neverarrogantly.

c SELF-CONTROL. The keyto my life is self-mastery. Iam temperate in mythoughts, words, andactions. I live a disciplinedlife-in private and in public.I have complete mastery of my body, my mind, myemotions and will, my time,my possessions, my desiresand appetites. I never losecontrol. I don't eat toomuch, drink too much, work too much, play toomuch, or sleep too much:no excesses whatever! Jesusis Lord over every area of

my life!
