As the high school season winds

down, it is quite a shift for us looking back

to the previous year, taking a bit of a break

on the broadcast side, and start looking

ahead to next year. It is also a time when

pro sports begin to take the forefront as the

NBA and NHL playoffs continue and base-

ball season is in full swing.

This issue contains some of that theme

looking back on the softball tournament, at

the start of the RailCats season and the

growth of Twitter as a medium to promote

high school sports.

We hope you enjoy this issue and will

continue to spread the word about MAB

and what we are doing. Also, don’t forget,

it’s never too early to begin thinking about

advertising for next season. Any advertisers

can contact us for some early bird specials

for the fall football season.

As a child and into my adulthood, I would be awaiting the Saturday

Paper to read about your favorite HS Sports team. Or maybe listening to a

scoreboard show locally or even statewide, as we have seen with Bob

Lovell. But now the rules of the game have changed with Twitter and

Facebook making communication with ease and with lightning speed. To-

day, I may know most of the area’s football scores by around 10pm, with-

out ever turning on a radio or staying up for a scoreboard show. Advertis-

ers too have went away from print media. With internet radio and video

soaring higher and higher. Hey by the way, around 12 years ago groups

started doing internet radio and it has changed the landscape forever for

HS Sports.

The top down effect of all of this has

been a deluge of information from media,

schools, athletes, fans, and coaches going out

on Twitter and Facebook. Is this a good thing?

Yes and No. Accuracy and the always who ca-

res argument, of who broke the story first to

feed my ego is out there for sure. But the posi-

tive is the instant communication to everyone

who is interested in the topic or score that you

are tweeting.

Website development for local HS

Sports is another offshoot of this instant com-

munication phase. Different websites bring

different milieus of information and of course

it is an advertising venue as well. Schools are

developing there own brand of broadcasting

and student groups that are becoming more

predominant every year in HS Sports. An ex-

ample of this is Pow Wow Radio at Portage

HS with Brandon Vickrey and Collin Czilli.

The NFL Draft has now developed into

other major sports having draft shows and

combines that are now being telecasted. In the

same vein, College Recruiting is now being

mainstreamed into athletes having Twitter Ac-

counts, telling everyone where and when they

are going to visit a college and what AAU

tournament they are playing with and against

whom. This would have been unthinkable a

decade ago. The story of Damon Bailey being

recruited as an 8th grader was big with Bobby

Knight, but the technological changes have in

reality changed the lives of HS Athletes more,

with not only phone calls but tweets on re-

cruiting as well, to the point it is hard for a 15-

17 yr old star athlete to just be a regular stu-

dent-athlete in my view today.

Finally, individuals lives have changed

significantly in my view, as the information

highway continues to churn out information

for all stakeholders to the point that there are

some sites that you can follow a HS Baseball

game pitch for pitch. That is remarkable and

I was discussing this with a HS Fan and par-

ent and he agreed at a recent track meet at

Michigan City HS.

ana HS Sports Teams and some known

Hey, an errant throw can de-

cide the ball game. Usually, it's pretty easy to improve a

player's throwing accuracy. Sometimes baseball fielding

tips get overlooked and I never

could quite figure out why. Doesn't a poor throw that al-

lows an important run to score count just as much on the

scoreboard as a hit in a key

situation to knock in an impor-tant run? Let's look at some

common throwing problems and how you usually, they can

easily be fixed.

Throws Are Overthrown and Sailing High:

There is a very good chance that you are not raising your throwing elbow to shoul-

der height. I've witnessed this hundreds of times over the years. I was watching a

high school varsity game a couple of

years ago. The first baseman was throw-ing grounders to his infielders in between

innings. He threw them a total of eight grounders. Out of the eight throws back

to him, four of them sailed high. Guess

what? When making all four of those high throws, every one of them was because

the infielder did not raise his throwing el-bow high enough. Four throws were high

and four elbows were not raised to

shoulder height. Watch closely to replays on TV when infielders overthrow their

first baseman because the throw sailed high. In many cases, you will see the in-

fielder did not raise his elbow high

enough when making the throw. Just re-member, "Elbow too low, ball high." In

essence, the ball is being "pushed" and not actually thrown.

Another possibility for overthrowing your target is you may be releasing the ball

before your landing foot hits the ground. This will cause your release point to be

too early thus causing a high throw.

Baseball Fielding Tips: How To Fix Throw-

ing Problems!

Page 15 MAB MONTHLY

Under Throwing the Ball:

The problem is usually at your release point. If you release the ball too late,

your throw will almost definitely be too

low.

Another strong possibility is that your front shoulder is dipping down below

your throwing shoulder. If your front

shoulder dips, there is a good chance your throw will be low and short of your

target.

Whenever possible, make sure that your

shoulders stay level throughout the throwing motion.

General Erratic Throwing:

There is no substitute for spending time practicing your throwing. If you throw a

baseball every day, your throwing will improve. Just remember, every time you

throw a baseball you should aim for a

target. It's one of the simplest yet most important baseball fielding tips for im-

proving throwing. If having a catch with someone, aim for their left shoulder, then

their right shoulder, left hip, right hip,

etc. Every time you throw a baseball, aim

for something! How can this possibly

not help? It has to help and it will help.

If throwing erratically, the problem could very well be in your footwork. Not

getting their feet set up properly is a

very common problem, especially with youngsters. Their feet are not set when

they throw the ball because of their im-patience to want to throw the ball too

soon. They have no balance or founda-

tion when they throw.

Like we mentioned above, keep your shoulders level and keep them square

to your target. Make sure your front

foot is pointing to your target and your back foot lined up like you are using the

pitching rubber.

Once again, every time you throw a

baseball, aim for a target. This one very simple thing will help you out tremen-

dously!

“Hey batter, batter…swing!” The cheers

rang from the dugout during the sectional

games for the Munster Mustangs. Con-

cluding with a 24-8 season, the Varsity

Softball team was more than excited to

capture a sectional title after overcoming

some difficult games this season. Each

player accepted a role in making this team

who they had become by the end of their

season for the year.

For the first game of the sectional

tournament, the Stangs won their game

against Lake Central with a final score of

4-0. This was a big win for the Mustangs,

since these two schools are nearly always

going head-to-head in seemingly every

sport, so all of the girls were over-

whelmed with this first vic-

tory. Advancing to their sec-

ond game, Munster crushed

Morton with a final score of

12-2, advancing the Mustangs

to the sectional championship

game. Further on, Munster

claimed their title from winning their

game against Lowell with a final score of

9-4.

“We played a pretty tough schedule

right before sectionals, so we had to prac-

tice really hard,” stated Carly Murphy,

star pitcher for the Mustangs. “We also

did a spirit week [before sectionals]

where we all wore our uniforms or some-

thing kind of fun to school.” While advanc-

ing to sectionals, keeping up their spirits was

almost as important as training. “We prac-

ticed everything that we needed to work on,

such as hitting and bunting,” recalled Briana

Zunica, one of three seniors on

the Munster team this year.

While playing a tough

game, Munster lost to Portage in

their regional game with a final

score of 2-1. “I think maybe we

could have been a little less nerv-

ous,” cried Murphy. “I think we just kind of

let our nerves get to us a little bit because it

was such a big game.”

“We could have worked on hitting for

key situations because there were a couple of

times we left runners on base and could not

get them in,” Zunica stated.

After a significant end to their season,

Page 18: June 2013 FREE - Mid America Broadcasting, LLC.Instant Communications Changing the HS Sports Landscape 8 Baseball Fielding Tips: How to Fix Throwing Problems! 14 Munster Softball Takes

the three seniors, Carly Murphy,

Briana Zunica, and Emma

Hodges, will be greatly missed

during the following season.

“I’ll miss all of the team bond-

ing and memories I have made

with all of the girls,” proclaimed

Zunica. “I’ve played ball with

them for such a long time.” The

seniors will miss not only their

teammates, but their fans as

well. “I think I’m going to miss

having my parents at all of my games,”

stated Murphy. “I will also miss the

friendships you make; you get so close

with almost all of the girls because you

spend so much time together.”

Munster Softball will remember

this season as setting an example for their

future years as well. After overcoming

many difficult teams this year, the tight-

knit squad was able to come out with a

great record, high standards, and much

positivity. Their hard work and team con-

RailCats off to a

Strong Start

Of course, this article is not about

me and my admitted affinity for a team

that I also cover for MAB. It is about the

team and their start this season. That start

has been very positive. This young season

is a welcome change to last year when the

RailCats went .500, but missed the play-

offs for the second year in a row. At

presstime the team sported a 10-5 record

and has clinched it’s 4th series win in a

row. In fact, other than the 2-2 spilt in the

opening series again the Lincoln Saltdogs,

the ‘Cats have won 2 of 3 games in home

series the the Wichita Wingnuts and Sioux

City Explorers and a road series win

against the Kansas City T Bones. Like-

wise, they won the first two games of the

El Paso Diablos series with the third game

still to be decided.

The hot start is is due, as it often is,

to the bats of long time RailCats Mike

Massaro who leads the team with a .306

batting average and Adam Klein with 13

P Alain Quijano (Left), and OFs Mike Massaro, Cristian Guerrero and Adam Klein have been key to the hot start for the Gary SouthShore RailCats

As big of a Cubs fan as I am, it never quite seems like baseball

season until the RailCats take to the diamond in May. Obviously,

this is a newer phenomenon since the team has not been around

for the entirety of my baseball fandom, but the team has become

something that I have looked forward to for the past several sea-

sons. As one of the only long-term successful minor-league fran-

chises to take hold in the Region, the RailCats seem to have be-

come ingrained in the community and in this nearly 40 year old

baseball fan.

RBI on the young season. Cris-

tian Guerrero, a fan favorite who

returned after a year away from

the team, has made an impact as

well with his 9 RBI and is the

only RailCats with a round trip-

per so far despite a batting aver-

age below the Mendoza line.

The fourth outfield Drew Marti-

nez has been solid as well with

a .304 batting average.

The fact that the outfield

has been strong is no surprise.

Those positions have led the

team for awhile, both offensively

and defensively. What has been a

very pleasant surprise has been the Rail-

Cats pitching this season. Pitching had

been a struggle for Northwest Indiana’s

team for the past couple of seasons, but it

has become a strength, harkening back to

the days of championship squads of ‘05

and ‘07. Leading the resurgence on the

mound is Alain Quijano who is top on

US SteelYard where the RailCats are 6-4 this season.

The team is 4-1 on the road

Page 23: June 2013 FREE - Mid America Broadcasting, LLC.Instant Communications Changing the HS Sports Landscape 8 Baseball Fielding Tips: How to Fix Throwing Problems! 14 Munster Softball Takes

the team with 3 wins and 16 strikeouts

with no losses and one no decision in his

first season with the RailCats. The win to-

tal already matches his total wins from

last season as a member of the Sioux City

Explorers. Rookie Ari Ronick has been

tremendous in the early going as well

with a 2-1 record, 3.00 ERA and 9

punchouts. He has not lost a decision

since the second game of the season

against Lincoln. The bullpen has also

held on to leads, led by rookie Taylor

Sewitt who has yet to give up a run

in 10.1 innings of work and second

year man Marco Gonzalez who has

2 saves on the season. Gonzalez is

one of 4 RailCats with a save on

the season in Manager Greg

Tagert’s closer by committee ap-

proach. The other pitchers with a

ham, and Sewitt.

Since the season started, the

RailCats statistically, have been

stronger on the road than at home

with a 4-1 record in road games

and a 6-4 record at the US Steel

Yard. That said the team has been

solid overall, is sitting in first

place in the Central Division and

is hoping for their first sweep of

the season at press time. If the

pitching can stay strong and some

of the veteran bats can pick up,

this could be the season when the

RailCats can make their inaugural

trip to the American Association

post-season, a goal that has al-

luded them since the left the

Northern League for the American

Association two seasons ago.

Everyone seems to have their favorite base-

ball movie. Whether it is an inspirational film like

The Rookie, a historical movie like 42, a comedy

like Mr. 3000, or one of many, many classics. It

seems that baseball is not only America’s favorite

pastime, but also one of America’s favorite movie

backdrops as well. The following is a list complied

by Baseball Almanac, of every movie that had a

baseball plot, subplot or setting since 1915’s silent

film Right Off the Bat to some recent 30 for 30 spe-

cials on ESPN. Enjoy as you reminisce your favor-

ites or perhaps discover a new one along the way.

It’s probably fair to

say that there has never

been a hockey article in

MAB Monthly, but for the

life of us, we can’t figure

out why. As the Black-

hawks make a run for an-

other Stanley

Cup, we thought

it may be fun to

take a look back

at some signifi-

cant moments in

Hawks history.

The Blackhawks were in-

troduced to the NHL in

1926. They won their first

ever game against the To-

ronto St Patricks 4-1.

To date, the team has won

4 Stanley Cups: 1934,

1938, 1961, and 2010.

No baseball team has

ever hit more than 2

home runs in an IHSAA

state championship

game. Penn hit 2 in

1998 and Andrean hit 2

in 2009.

No home runs have ever

been hit in a 1A softball

state championship

game.

California has produced

more MLB players than

any other state. Pennsyl-

vania is number 2.

The Cardinals are actu-

ally the oldest franchise

in the NFL having been

formed in 1899 as the

Morgan Athletic Club in

Chicago.

Mary, Queen of Scots ac-

tually wa sthe first golfer

to coin the term “caddy.”

Martin Luther is cred-

ited with standardizing

the rules for bowling.

The familiar red in the

Blackhawks sweaters did

not enter the picture until

1934. Prior to that, it was

black and white.

Stan Mikita was the first

player to have his

number retired

by the franchise

when his #21 was

retired in 1980.

Bob Pulford has

been the Black-

hawks head coach 4 times:

in 1977-1979, 1982, 1985-

1987, and 1999-2000.

Head Coach Joel Quenne-

ville previously coached in

Colorado and St. Louis.
