Prairie Hills Howl June 2014 Dear Families, It is hard to believe that the 20142014 school year is coming to an end. What a great year it has been! Thank you for being a part of the Prairie Hills family and sharing your children with us. Seeing them grow and succeed is such a joy for us! The last day of school will be June 3 rd . This is also the date of our 5 th grade culminaƟon ceremony. We are sad to see our 5 th graders go, but know they are ready to ourish in middle school. This year all of our teachers went to classrooms to introduce themselves to their incoming students for next year. A leƩer was also sent home from the grade level team your child will be entering. This leƩer was to let you and your child know what to expect in the next grade, and what they can do over the summer to prepare for the next school year. It is important that students have Ɵme to relax and enjoy their summer, but we want them to retain the informaƟon they learned this year. Just 1015 minutes a day pracƟcing skills they have learned this year, will help them be ready for next year. It is also important for them to read and be read to. The Pikes Peak library district has a wonderful, free reading program where students can earn some great prizes for reading. Don’t forget to check our lost and found before you leave for the summer. We will be donaƟng any leŌ items, aŌer school is nished. Also, if your child has medicine in the clinic, make sure you pick it up on the last day of school, any medicaƟons leŌ will be disposed of. Whatever you’re doing this summer, we wish you the best. Have a fun, resƞul and safe break, and we will see you back at school in August! Sincerely, Vicki Axford and Beth Dowdy

WATCH D.O.G.S. Program Goal

To help Prairie Hills Elementary School be positively influenced by the committed involvement of fathers and father figures in lives of their children

and students.

How WATCH D.O.G.S.® Works

WATCH D.O.G.S.® invites fathers, grandfathers, uncles, or other father fig-ures to volunteer at least one day all day at their child’s/student's school during the school year. A Watch DOG volunteer performs a variety of tasks during their volunteer day including monitoring the school entrance, assist-ing with unloading and loading kids in car line, monitoring the lunch room, or helping in the classroom with a teacher's guidance by working with small groups of students on homework, flashcards, or spelling.

Background

WATCH D.O.G.S.® is the father involvement initiative of the National Cen-ter for Fathering that was founded by Jim Moore, a concerned father who chose to take action in response to a 1998 middle-school shooting in Jonesboro, AR. Moore wanted to help prevent violence from occurring at his children’s school or at any school. The first program was launched at George Elementary in Springdale, AR, the school of Moore’s oldest child. Today, more than 4600 programs in 46 states that participate in WATCH D.O.G.S.®
