at the Northern Tikes location
(kids and grandkids welcome!)
210 Main Street East
At the June board meeting,
Steve McArthur and Mallory
Chaput invited the board and
its’ membership to a walking
tour of North Bay’s Downtown,
showcasing vacant space.
The goal of the tour is to allow
retailers, entrepreneurs, profes-
sionals, tenants, etc to visualize
themselves in the space, and
hopefully fill some of the
vacancies with new businesses
and tenants.
Denise Sherritt, Manager of the
Business Centre provided a
presentation on the current pro-
grams available for Nipissing
and Parry Sound businesses and
entrepreneurs. Outside of the
general services they offer, such
as: business license registration,
business plan development,
market research, funding appli-
cation assistance, mentorship
and coaching; the Business
Centre also has programs for
Youth Entrepreneurship, Starter
Company, Microlending for
Women, Summer Company,
and High School Entrepreneur-
ship Outreach. The Business
Centre is located on the 6th
floor City Hall.
The Chamber’s Investment
Attraction Intern, Ben Brisson
provided an overview of the
Corporate Referral program that
will be rolling out to front line
staff to gain leads for business
investment and attraction. Any
potential leads for retention,
expansion and attraction will be
provided to the Chamber, with
qualified leads going to the
City’s Economic Development
Department. Thank you to our
partners: City of North Bay,
Canadore College, the Labour
Market Group, NOHFC and
FedNor for assisting with this
program.
President Shogren was pleased
to sit down with the Vice-
President of RBC Ontario, Ann
Bowman. Ann is also Vice-
Chair with the Ontario Chamber
of Commerce. A great discus-
sion regarding RBC’s interest in
community involvement, as
well as an update regarding
OCC.
President Shogren left immedi-
ately following the board meet-
ing to attend as a panel member
at Cogeco, as the provincial
election unfolded that same eve-
ning. Congratulations to MPP
Vic Fedeli on his re-election.
President Shogren also offered
thanks to Chris Minor, Scott
Clark, Kyle Selle, Irene Smit
and Jake Lacourse for bringing
together the Meet the Candi-
dates Night. To all the candi-
dates, President Shogren noted
that it takes a lot of “dedication
and commitment to put your
name forward in any election”.
For that he thanked all the
candidates as well.
Congratulations went to
Deegan’s Shoe Store celebrating
125 years in business. Krystal
Kaufmann of Bio Ped was con-
gratulated for her win as Young
Entrepreneur at the Northern
Ontario Business’ Influential
Women Awards recently. Also
to Tambeau Construction for
taking over the old vacant
school board location on Front
Street and moving operations
there. This location will also
house the Day Care that had
troubles with the Greenwood
Church location last year.
Vested Interest was also
congratulated on their grand
reopening in Callander.

Health and Safety Awareness Training
A new regulation will require health and safety awareness
training for every worker and supervisor under Ontario’s
Occupational Heath and Safety Act. This regulation
comes into force July 1, 2014.
Training can be done online and requires about 45 minutes
to 1 hour of each employee’s time. At the end of the
training a certificate can be printed. Employers are
required to have a copy of the certificate for each
employee on file (you do not have to send them in to
the government, however if asked for them, you need to
provide proof of completion).
