FIESTA FILIPINA RECAP by Edward Tumanut A thoroughly exhausting, exciting, satisfying, successful, and outstanding weekend! Our 2014 edition of Fiesta Filipina went off with nary a hitch. I'm biased of course, but I believe we put on perhaps our best production ever. It would be too long to list all the people and the positives involved, but the fruits of great ideas and hard work couldn't have been sweeter. I got to meet so many wonderful faces over that weekend, and I am so thankful and proud for the army of volunteers that made this all possible. It truly was "A Celebration of Culture and Community."

A thoroughly exhausting, exciting, satisfying, successful, and outstanding weekend! Our 2014 edition of Fiesta Filipina went off with nary a hitch. I'm biased of course, but I believe we put on perhaps our best production ever. It would be too long to list all the people and the positives involved, but the fruits of great ideas and hard work couldn't have been sweeter. Clink & Clique: Networking Happy Hour Wednesday, July 16 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM, Pierpont’s at Union Station Young (and young-at-heart) professionals in our community are invited to a monthly networking happy hour. Our next event will be at Pierpont’s at Union Station. Come hang out with old friends, meet new ones, and discover new connections and opportunities within the community. Movie Night on the Terrace Friday, July 25 7:30 PM, Filipino Cultural Center Bring your family and friends to the Filipino Cultural Center to enjoy a relaxing summer evening. We'll screen a movie outdoors at the beautiful Francisco Family Terrace. Our Movie Nights will be double-feature. One will be culturally and/or educationally relevant (Filipino/Asian films, documentaries); the other will be family-friendly fun. Filipino Association Day at the K Sunday, July 27 1:00 PM, Kauffman Stadium Join us at Kauffman Stadium on July 27 as our hometown Royals take on the Cleveland Indians. We have a limited number of group tickets available for $18 each. Seats are in the Hy-Vee Box. Payment must be received by July 20 to reserve your tickets. SINAG-TALA DAZZLES AT FUTURE STAGES FESTIVAL
PULITZER PRIZE-WINNING JOURNALIST VISITS KC
Congratulations to our Sinag-Tala Dance Troupe and their families on a riveting performance during the Future Stages Festival - at the world-class Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts! What a breathtaking way to share our culture and gifts with the city of Kansas City. The Filipino Association stands proud.
University of Oregon professor and Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Alex Tizon hosted a talk for the general public at the Filipino Cultural Center. Tizon has contributed to Newsweek and 60 Minutes, worked in Seattle as bureau chief for The Los Angeles Times, and was a longtime writer for The Seattle Times. While reporting for The Seattle Times, Tizon won the Pulitzer for his story on corruption and inequities in a federally-sponsored housing program for Native Americans.
His chat coincided with the release of his latest book, Big Little Man: In Search of My Asian Self, a personal exploration on growing up as a first-generation Filipino American in the 1970s, and the discovery of the meanings of race, culture, and self-confidence. The crowd was enlightened by the engaging discussion.
