THE FIRST CONTRACT
The first contract was awarded to Dust-A-Side for Dust Control Management for their haul roads. Dust-A-Side is currently treating 320 000m2 of permanent haul roads in Benga. The road that is currently maintained and managed by Dust-A-Side is the main haul road from the run off mine to the rail siding. This road is used by 18 wheeler trucks over a 15km stretch. The company employs 9 personnel who manage the contract on a full time basis.
THE SECOND CONTRACT
The second contract was awarded to Dust-A-Side for the dust management services for the material handling side of our Dust Control Management. The material handling side of the Dust Control Management at Benga utilises the high pressure mist system as well as the chemical dosing low pressure system, which controls the dust issues on their primary tip and crusher, secondary crusher, transfer points, surge bin and stock yard areas. Dust-A-Side has seven high pressure systems and two low pressure systems installed at Benga Coal Mine. The DAS systems are being maintained by Minopex, contracted by Rio Tinto to run the mining operations at Benga Coal Mine. Dust-A-Side supplies Minopex with critical spares and assists their maintenance teams with intellectual and technical support. Since the installation of the Dust-A-Side’s Dust Suppression system, Benga Coal Mine has passed its monthly environmental audits with flying colours.

Dust-A-Side expansion into Mozambique - East Africa
Dust-A-Side’s relationship with Mozambique began in 2013 when two big mining houses demonstrated their confidence in our capabilities and awarded Dust-A-Side contracts for Dust Control Management in their surface mining coal operations.
RIO TINTO - BENGA COAL MINE
Dust-A-Side was involved in early discussions and negotiations with Rio Tinto’s Benga Coal Mine on the services Dust-A-Side can offer to the mine for their Dust Management needs.
Dust-A-Side was subsequently awarded two separate contracts by the mine.

VALE - MOATIZE COAL PROJECT
After going through a vigorous tendering process and having meetings with key decision makers within Vale, Vale demonstrated their confidence and awarded the contract to Dust-A-Side. This contract is mainly for a Dust Control Management programme for their permanent haul roads of 300 000m2 on their surface mining operation. This is on their main mining haul road. The company employs 9 personnel who manage the contract on a full time basis for the company.
Key benefits for the customer in using our Dust Control Management systems are:

Dust-A-Side is pleased to be present in Mozambique and to be associated with these two important projects. The company looks forward to using our expertise, technical experience and our unique total offering in assisting the mines with their future developments.
We also look forward to partnering with the local communities and various stakeholders to assist in the creation of local employment and sharing of our skills to further develop the local skills base. We take pride on our company’s safety record and performance, and are confident that this will be continued throughout our operations in Mozambique.

New state-of-the-art laboratory plantThe Colas Research and Development department recently took possession of a Denimo Tech laboratory emulsion manufacturing unit from Denmark. This unit is a state-of-the-art laboratory plant capable of producing bitumen emulsions that are representative of the emulsions that we produce in our factories. It is an excellent research tool that enables us to produce emulsions in the laboratory that we were not capable of producing before. Although our emulsion factories are capable of producing highly specialised emulsions, we could previously not reproduce these emulsions in the laboratory. With the new plant, we can accurately simulate the manufacturing conditions that we have in our factory units.
The plant is equipped with a touch screen, which simplifies the operation considerably. All operations of the unit are controlled by a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC), which makes the proportioning of the emulsion components very accurate. A technician from the supplier of the equipment in Denmark recently visited Colas in Cape Town to train all the Research and Development personnel in the operation of the equipment. The Research and Development department is very excited about the new acquisition and is confident that the equipment will play a major role in the development of new generation emulsions that are currently not available on the South African market.
