Porsche of North America opens its First U.S.

Porsche Experience Center in Atlanta.

Los Angeles can’t be far behind !!

It’s a big day for Porsche Cars North America (PCNA) with the official opening of its Porsche Experi-ence Center (PEC) and headquarters in Atlanta today, which can be found off of One Porsche Drive.

The significance is clear: Porsche invested $100 million into the development of the property, making it the single largest investment the automaker has made in North America.

“Today we celebrate a significant milestone in the history of Porsche as we expand our footprint in the

United States and reaffirm our commitment to the state of Georgia and the city of Atlanta,” said Mat-

thias Müller, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche. “We are investing more than ever before,

heightening visibility for the Porsche brand in the U.S. and worldwide.”

The headquarters provides office space for PCNA, Porsche Financial Services, Porsche Business Ser-vices, Porsche Consulting, and Mieschke Hofmann & Partners. In addition, the 27-acre complex also houses a 1.6-mile driver development track, classic Porsche gallery, restoration center, human perfor-mance center, driving simulator lab, and a fine-dining restaurant named 356, all of which are the main draws for PCAers, Porsche customers, and the general public. It is estimated that 30,000 guests will vis-it the PEC and headquarters.

“Our vision for our new home was to create a bold, energizing environment here in Atlanta to demon-

strate the unique capabilities of our sports cars,” said Detlev von Platen, President and CEO of Porsche

Cars North America. “The experience center coupled with our headquarters is truly the first of its kind

in the automotive industry where we welcome employees, partners, customers and enthusiasts alike.”

Porsche Opens New $100 Million Experience Center and Headquarters in Atlanta

Atlanta. Porsche Cars North America today officially opened its new $100 million Porsche Experience Center (PEC) and

headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia. The 27-acre complex located at the Northeast corner of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta

International Airport is the largest investment outside Germany for the sports car manufacturer. The industry-first facility

is complete with a driver development track, classic car gallery, restoration center, human performance center, driving

simulator lab and a fine dining restaurant. A state-of-the-art business center features 13,000 square feet of conference and

event space. The experience center has been specifically designed as a destination for the public, including automotive

enthusiasts and Porsche customers.

“Today we celebrate a significant milestone in the history of Porsche as we expand our footprint in the United States and

reaffirm our commitment to the state of Georgia and the city of Atlanta,” said Matthias Mueller, Chairman of the

Executive Board of Porsche. “We are investing more than ever before, heightening visibility for the Porsche brand in the

U.S. and worldwide.”

An estimated 30,000 guests are expected to visit the uniquely designed Porsche Experience Center each year. Visitors and

corporate groups can hone their driving skills, reserve meeting space in the fully-equipped business center, view classic

Porsche automobiles or dine at Restaurant 356, aptly named after the first production Porsche model.

“Our vision for our new home was to create a bold, energizing environment here in Atlanta to demonstrate the unique

capabilities of our sports cars,” said Detlev von Platen, President and CEO of Porsche Cars North America. “The

experience center coupled with our headquarters is truly the first of its kind in the automotive industry where we

welcome employees, partners, customers and enthusiasts alike.”

The 1.6-mile Driver Development Track runs through the courtyard of the facility and includes six instructor-led driving

modules. The Handling Circuit, Off-Road Course, Dynamics Area, Low Friction Handling Circuit, Low Friction Circle

and the only Kick Plate in North America are designed to demonstrate the engineering and technological capabilities of

all Porsche models.

“Porsche’s investment in its new headquarters represents the confidence it has in the future success of our state, our

economy and our workforce,” said Georgia Governor Nathan Deal. “The facility at One Porsche Drive is as innovative,

forward-thinking and performance-driven as the company itself. From their windows on I-75, travelers have borne

witness to the progress being made here, and now, the day has come when these same visitors can truly experience all

that Porsche and Georgia, have to offer.”

More than 70 alternative locations in a number of states were considered during site selection. In the end, Atlanta’s

transportation infrastructure, skilled workforce and strong support from the city and the state were key reasons for the

decision to expand in Atlanta. The proximity to the world’s busiest airport allows approximately 80 percent of the U.S.

population to reach the Porsche Experience Center within two and a half hours of flying time.

“I am delighted to extend a warm welcome to Porsche Cars North America and congratulate them on their grand

opening,” said Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed. “Porsche discovered why Atlanta has the third-highest concentration of

Fortune 500 companies: a low cost of doing business, a high quality of life, access to the world’s busiest and most effi-

cient passenger airport and the fastest-growing container port in the country. Businesses are voting with their feet and

choosing Atlanta as the place to build and grow. We are proud to have Porsche, an iconic, best-in-class company, make

their new home here.”

Porsche Cars North America (PCNA) has called the Atlanta area home since 1998. PCNA is now joined by Porsche

Financial Services, Porsche Business Services, Porsche Consulting and Mieschke Hofmann & Partners, with all five

entities housed under the same roof. Ultimately, 450 employees will be based at the new headquarters, over 100 of

whom fill positions that are new to Georgia.

Interesting story on Gizmag this morning about how Porsche has patented a new type of variable compression ration engine technology.

Partnering Porsche in this venture is Hilite International, already a long-standing client at Porsche Consulting.

Variable Compression Ratio (VCR) is a prime candidate for the next big step in internal combustion engine efficiency. It is particularly suitable for

turbocharged engines, and we know that all 911s will adopt turbocharged engines over the next few years, alongside the many turbocharged

model variants in the Macan, Cayenne and Panamera ranges already produced by Porsche.

Compression ratio is critical to performance, and is of particular importance on turbocharged engines. Turbos work by compressing the intake

charge of air and fuel before ramming it into the combustion chamber under pressure. Because a turbocharger is powered by exhaust gas, and

therefore is not always running at peak boost, the amount of fuel/air mix entering the cylinder varies from low volume when the turbo is not

spinning to maximum volume when the turbo is running at peak revs. Turbocharged engines must therefore run lower compression ratios, to

allow that higher volume at peak boost. This costs them power.

Why use Variable Compression Ratio technology?

One way to increase the efficiency of a turbocharged engine would be to constantly adjust the compression ratio, giving higher compression off-

boost, and reducing the compression as boost pressure rises, to prevent detonation. The Porsche system (top) is clever, planting the piston on

an eccentric mount that is automatically adjusted by control rods, which swivel the piston up or down on the crankshaft connecting rod depend-

ing on oil pressure, thus controlling the compression ratio.

Compare this solution to the nicely engineered but complex solution developed

by MCE over the last decade (above), and it is perhaps easy to imagine how this

new patent might better suit volume manufacturing, delivering less risk to

reliability. It is also highly licensable technology: something which Porsche has

done very well from over its history. So, even if the technology never makes it

into a Porsche, it could be shared commercially with a wide range of other end

users.

Bravo Porsche engineering! We look forward to seeing a fully developed version

of this system come to production, and to experiencing the benefits on the

road.

A 1961 Porsche RS-61 currently owned by Sir Stirling Moss OBE will be offered for sale at the Bonhams Goodwood Festival of Speed 2015 sale, to be held June 26th at Goodwood House in Chichester, UK.

Sir Stirling Moss OBE famously bought this Porsche RS-61 (chassis 718-070) for $1,705,000 USD at the 2010 Gooding Amelia Island auction, less than one week after breaking both his ankles after falling three stories down an open elevator shaft. He subsequently campaigned it at historic level in the Le Mans Classic on the 24-Hour race circuit in France, and in the USA at the Monterey Motorsports Reunion, his last competitive motor race.

The Porsche company’s agile RennSport (‘RS’) cars, with powerful 4-cylinder air-cooled, four cam engine mounted behind the open two-seat cockpit, won the Targa Florio in 1956, 1959 and 1960. In 1961, Sir Stirling shared a 2-liter Porsche RS-60 there with Graham Hill.

Sir Stirling recalled, “Our racing car was just perfect for the course, we could hardly have wished for nicer, and

I led for the first four 44-mile laps, by 1 1/2 minutes before handing over to Graham for his two laps. He hand-

ed the car back to me 76 seconds behind a Ferrari, and I managed to change that into a 65-second lead with

one lap to go. We looked on course for a lap record last time round and a great win until – only 8 kms from the

finish – the transmission failed, put us out, and the Ferrari won instead. We have since been described as

moral winners of that race, which is unfortunate, because moral first places don’t pay first-place prize money”

Moss and Hill then drove the latest, almost identical, Porsche RS-61, fitted with a 1605cc engine, four cam in the subsequent Nurburgring 1,000 Kilometers race in Germany’s Eifel Mountains. On a track slick with drizzle, Sir Stirling took the lead on the second lap but, as the course dried, he was overwhelmed by far larger and more powerful factory Ferraris.

Sir Stirling continued, “After 12 laps I handed over to Graham who rejoined fifth. Then it began to snow! Gra-ham handed back to me and I found the little Porsche ideal for the Nurburgring in such conditions. We climbed into third, then second. I was set to take the lead when the little car broke – but it had been exciting while it lasted.”

The Porsche RS-61 (chassis 718-070) offered for sale at Bonhams’ 2015 Goodwood Festival of Speed sale was originally delivered to first owner Bob Holbert of Pennsylvania early in 1961. He was the leading Ameri-can Porsche specialist of his era, and he competed in the car in his busy program of Sports Car Club of Amer-ica East Coast events, including the Daytona National. He then sold the car to gentleman driver Tom Payne, who always raced wearing an impeccably valeted business suit and tie.

Tom Payne and Porsche RS-61 ‘070’ featured in such further East Coast races as the Cumberland Nationals, Wisconsin Grand Prix, Thompson Nationals and the Atlanta ‘500’ Sprints. Third owner Millard Ripley subse-quently won in the car at the Watkins Glen circuit in New York. Overall, 718-070 is credited with having achieved 13 victories and 20 podium placings in SCCA National competitions.

The car was finally retired from active competition in 1963, but survived complete and unmolested before be-

ing restored for vintage racing as early as 1969. More recently top historic Porsche specialist Andy Prill com-

pleted a thorough rebuild which saw the car re-finished both mechanically and aesthetically to its current race-

ready form.

Bonhams Motor Car Department head James Knight said, “We are hugely honored to have been commis-sioned to sell Sir Stirling’s cherished Porsche RS61 following his retirement from competitive motor sport. It is particularly appropriate that we should offer the car at the forthcoming Goodwood Festival of Speed – where Sir Stirling is the founder patron and where he achieved so much throughout his unmatchable career.”

This 1961 Porsche RS-61 ‘070’ will be offered at the Bonhams Festival of Speed Auction on June 26th, 2015,

to be held at Goodwood House in Chichester, UK (Estimate £1,700,000 to £2,000,000; $2,500,000 –

$3,000,000). For more information, visit Bonhams Festival of Speed.
