A NOTE FROM JENNIFERIf you were ever lucky enough to

experience summer time in Michigan as a

child, you know it comes with lots of sunshine

and adventures. However, for too many

children in Kalamazoo County, those carefree

  • COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT: FEED THE WORLD CAFE

LETTER CARRIERS FOOD DRIVEIn Kalamazoo, the grand total for the

Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive was 70,135

pounds of food! Thank you to our partners:

    The Salvation Army, Portage Community

Center, United Way of the Battle Creek and

Kalamazoo Region, and our local Letter

Carriers of the 246 Branch! We are especially

grateful to our generous local community.

By providing a generous donation of $35,000 towards the Food is Fuel Campaign, United Healthcare demonstrated its commitment to feeding children and their families this summer. Shown above are KLFs Greta Faworski and Jennifer Johnson, United Healthcare Community

Plans CEO, Dennis Mouras, Representative Jon Hoadley, and Senator Margaret OBrien.

In 2005, KLF created a new summer directive focused on hungry children in our community called the Food is Fuel Campaign. This fundraising initiative was deliberately scheduled for the summer months when we see the number of children served skyrocket because free and reduced-price school meals are not available. In order to truly promote a hunger-free community, one of our goals is to provide the fuel necessary for our future business leaders, community leaders, change agents, and budding athletes to reach their full potential. But we cant do it without your support. Your contributions to our Food is Fuel Campaign this summer can help make a difference for thousands of local children. You can donate online at www.kzoolf.org or contact Greta Faworski, our Resource Development Director, at 269-488-2617 x208 or [email protected] for more information.

    FOOD IS FUEL CAMPAIGN

Founded in 2012 by Patrick Mixis, Feed The World Cafe has a strong mission and a team dedicated to changing the culinary scene in Kalamazoo while changing the lives of those struggling with hunger. The concept came to Patrick while he was studying at WMU, and he learned startling statistics about how many people struggle with hunger everyday. He envisioned combining restaurant and food service with promoting a hunger-free community. He shared his dream with friends David Kobreek, John Ihling, Shawn Jones, Alex Heckaman and Scott Parker, and it quickly became a passion of these local young entrepreneurs to bring this company to life. Each meal served provides funds to local nonprofits for one or more meals for people struggling with hunger. The impact on hunger will be made through partnerships with Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes, Ministry with Community, and the Food Bank of South Central Michigan. Additionally, all proceeds from purchased totes will directly benefit Loaves & Fishes. Feed The World Cafe has opened its first restaurant at 7000 Stadium Drive, Kalamazoo, MI, formerly the Blackeye Espresso Cafe. The fair trade, organic coffees and teas will continue along with a full service restaurant specializing in worldly cuisines. Feed The World Cafe has begun to count the number of meals provided for people struggling with hunger. They will have a tally board inside the restaurant and on their website at www.feedtheworldcafe.com.

  • ALEXANDRAS TIME OF NEED WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS?Planning is something we all do or at least know we

should be doing. We make plans for our careers, families, vacations, home improvement projects, and retirement. But what about our charitable giving plans?

Feeding hungry people is important to you. And you can be confident that your charitable dollars make a difference at Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes. Make a plan to continue your impact in our community for years to come and explore your planned giving options today.

So whats a planned gift? These donations typically involve ones estate and require more planning than the average gift. Some planned gifts can start working today while others provide benefits after your lifetime. A very common example is a bequest - naming Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes in your will to receive a portion of your estate. Many of our long-time supporters have left us bequests. We honor their memory by keeping nutritional food on the table of children and their families.

Bequests, charitable trusts, life insurance policies there are so many different ways to make a planned gift and further solidify your role in feeding our community. The members of our Harvest Society have committed to making a lasting impact to fight hunger. Please consider joining them. Contact Greta Faworski, our Resource Development Director, at 269-488-2617 x208 or [email protected] to further discuss your options.

In 2013, Alexandra* moved to Kalamazoo with her 13-year old

son and two younger school-aged children. Alexandras oldest

son suffers from multiple chronic illnesses. During her first year in

Kalamazoo, she struggled to find a job. She currently works part-

time at a daycare, but it hasnt been enough to make ends meet

with her sons rising healthcare costs.

She does her best taking care of her children while trying to

find a steady job, but her sons condition requires her full-time

attention. She said, My case worker thinks I need to go see

someone for myself because of all I have to deal with. Life has

been hard, but I am grateful to Loaves & Fishes for helping us

get enough food on the table. Over the summer months, she

shared it is more difficult to stretch her food budget because her

three children are not receiving 2 meals a day in Kalamazoo Public

Schools. She finds herself relying more on food assistance during

the summer time. She is thankful to Loaves & Fishes for helping her

in her greatest time of need.

Through a targeted two-week campaign in February called Give From the Heart, Bronson employees generously gave $13,203 to support Loaves & Fishes network of food pantries. Helping feed our community is not new for Bronson between employee campaigns and Foundation gifts, Bronson has given KLF nearly $50,000 and 7,000 pounds of food in the past five years. But this year, they decided to try a new twist. Instead of holding their campaign in fall, they moved it to February to support KLF during a time when need is high, but donations are quite low. To help make giving even easier, Bronson Food Service provided the option for employees to add a donation to their purchase in the cafeterias and gift shop. Maggie Bullard-Marshall from Corporate Communications who spearheaded the campaign was very pleased with the results. We are so

proud that, as a team, Bronson was able to provide enough dollars for over 39,000 meals!

MILK VOUCHER PROGRAM In 2002, a client survey indicated that fresh

milk is the second most needed item in clients households.

As part of the Grocery Pantry Program, clients are given milk vouchers to redeem for a gallon of milk at any Hardings, Park Street Market, and Town & Country Supermarket store in Kalamazoo.

Forty percent of the families served by the Grocery Pantry Program have children in their household; fresh milk provides them with another nutritious option for their children.
